News: Pedro looks good in Sim-Game
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 11, 2008 2:58 pm

Facing Carlos Beltran and three minor leaguers, including Mike Carp, Pedro Martinez successfully tossed a 59–pitch simulated game earlier today at Tradition Field.

Beltran was 1–for-5 against Martinez.

…i would have enjoyed watching pedro pitch to beltran…that’s unique…even if it is just a simulated game

For more on Martinez’s afternoon, during which he had an 87–mph fastball and a 67–mph change-up, check out the Journal News, Daily News, New York Post and the Star-Ledger.

As expected, Martinez is still on pace to start Sunday in St. Lucie against the Detroit Tigers.

I think Beltran is an ENORMOUS part of this team. Matt I know this doesn’t directly relate to Pedro vs Beltran faceoff (woulda loved to see that too) but I think Beltran really needs to stay consistent this season. We know what he accomplishes during his hot streaks but with all his constant nagging injuries he can get ice cold too. A little more consistency and focus from Beltran and he could go back to 40 homers and a legit #4 hitter

I think it’s more protection than focus and consistency. He thrived in 2006 with the protection of a feared Delgado behind him If Delgado doesn’t rebound, Beltran will not get as many pitches to hit and he will get himself out.

i agree with that, i think beltran needs protection. unfortunately i doubt he’ll get much of that this year between delgado sucking and alou not being on the field.

Yeah but I would expect that Wright will be hitting behind him most of the year (Beltran 3rd, Wright 4th) so he should get all of the protection he needs.

Wright is the best hitter on the team….he will be hitting 3rd. He thrived as a 3 hitter last year and I think it should be Wright 3 and Beltran 4 without a doubt.

Yeah, you’re right. For some reason I thought Wright did better last year hitting 4th but that didn’t sound right to me so I checked and he was much better hitting 3rd. Not sure why I thought that.

Yea, I can’t see Willie moving Wright out of the three. The question is with Delgado , Church/Chavez batting after Beltran he’s not getting much to hit. It again just shows how much we need Delgado to be the Delgado that LaRussa refused to pitch to and just kept walking him over and over.

Alou will probably hit 5th when he plays, at least against lefties, depending on how Delgado’s hitting. I would guess/hope that Castro starts pretty much every game a lefty is pitching. This way we can have Alou 5th and Delgado 6th without having 3 lefties hitting 6,7,8.

Alou who? You cannot count on him being in the lineup regularly enough to be of help.

When he’s healthy, I’d rather see Alou as the 5 and Delgado 6 or even 7 when Church has a good matchup. Delgado has to prove himself worthy of being in the middle of the order again.

I like that . Delgado needs to be dropped if the middle of May comes and he can’t make it happen.

Hopefully Alou isn’t out past the All Star Break but I gotta feeling …..

another simulated game? there are articles all over the news about pedro being 100%, cy young candidate, ready for a three-year contract after the season. it sounds like they are being very careful for a guy who is feeling so great.

i support taking it easy for sure, but it makes you wonder considering pedro did pitch at the end of last year. without a healthy pedro, it’s going to be tough to win the division

While I wouldn’t dismiss it - Pedro and the Mets said from the get-go that he wasn’t making the road trip today mainly because of the travel and also because he would have been facing the Sox, who seem to turn Pedro from the swaggered ace into a girly man. Keep in mind he was going to pitch a game last week except it got washed out and he is slated to pitch a game in a few days against Detroit. It’s not like they’re playing will he or won’t he like they are with El Duque or Duaner.

Pedro’s gonna be fine..

He’s earned the right not to have to sit on a three hour bus ride.. even if it is a luxury liner you dont want to lug him around..

I dont think he left PSL during his whole rehab stint last year..

fair enough. though it’s a bit troubling that he’ll make his first real start on sunday only two weeks before his start on opening day or day 2. i guess we’re likely to see a 5 inning performance for his regular season start.

it’s a marathon not a sprint so it works for me. besides we don’t want to knock mr. martinez’s tiara wout of place. he is the best pitcher in the history if baseball (statistically)

There may be a tiara to contend with indeed. All I’m saying is nothing “unusual” in terms of something against what the Mets were projecting would happen has happened with Pedro. It’s not like how Duaner was supposedly months ahead of anyone else in camp three weeks ago and now is likely to start the season on the 15-day DL.

zen, you should also be reminded of the fact he hardly pitched in spring training at all in ‘06 and came out and dominated, and really didn’t do much in ‘05 spring training wise either, and dominated then too.

in 2005, pedro pitched 11 innings about the same as every other starter.

in 2006, pedro pitched 7 innings just a few inning less than the other starters.

in 2008, pedro has pitched 0 innings

doesn’t mean he won’t be great, but the mets are known for being uncleat about medical info like sanchez

i know you want to make something of this, but like my response below says, Pedro would be pitching in games if was going to be traveling, and if he really was injured, why would he be on a schedule right now? Sure, they’re simulated games, but he’s still on a schedule. If he was injured, i’m guessing he wouldn’t be pitching at all.

pedro WOULD be pitching in real spring training games right now, but he doesn’t want to travel, so no opportunities have come up. The fact that he’s only pitching in simulated games means nothing. IT’s just how the schedule has worked out.

what the hell is a simulated game? Is it kind of like when we were kids and used ghost runners? And If you hit it over the car it’s a home run?

Exactly what I was thinking. And, if the release points are the same (just like with Johan), oooooohh boy is this going to be a good year!

How is Pedro facing Beltran unique? They both played in the AL together for years…Beltran is 4-13 career vs Pedro with no extra base hits and 3 K’s.
