I think walking strikeouts are the best kind. :)

  2. 1DoggLJ says:

One more game for Delgado like this and its realistically time to worry.

  3. bonatom says:

    Los Carlos’ El Stinko

  4. Mister Koo says:

I know it’s only spring training, but for Delgado to look as bad as he did when he was at his worst last year is not a good sign. It’s getting harder and harder to believe that he is going to bounce back.

    • aye says:

he prolly wont since hes on the wrong age, however no one expects him to carry this team, still 25 hr an 90 Rbis are well accepted, dont you think?

I mean. what is the solution? Jacobs? who we traded to the marlins…he woulve put worst numbers

sure delgado is terribly overpaid for those numbers, but they’ll do. Im sure the mets arent looking at him long-term

  5. Blue_n_Orange says:

Does anyone know how hard Sanchez was throwing?

    • m00kie says:

from the comments on delcos’ site:

“His velocity is only 88-90 and he had no command of his fastball which I hope improves before opening day.”

    • metsin080910 says:

Radar gun topped at 91. I heard the SNY gun is a little slow too. Probly 93.

      • mza4eva says:

do you think maybe we should break camp with smith and give sanchez an extra week or two to stretch him out a little more, Willie likes to use his relievers for two innings

  6. Delgado is going to be a thorn in this team’s side till he hangs up the cleats and vanishes. Even when he was “good” in ‘06 and ‘07 (yes, I know he was “good” only very, very briefly last year) he wasn’t THAT good. He’s going to be a problem for this team, and sadly, we don’t have anyone behind him that is a steady, long-term solution.

    Delgado R.I.P.

    • Gina says:

His contract is up this year. And we have 2 decent 1B prospects in lower ball, as well as Mike Carp. Hopefully one of them will step up and be able to take over the spot full-time eventually.

  7. gipper913i says:

A contract year will make people other than A. Jones dance.

  8. The Milledge Idiot says:

    OLLIE!!

  9. CaseStreet says:

    No walks. That’s really good.

  10. Kevin Elster says:

One thing I said at the end of last year was that Omar needed to move Delgado for fresh blood. Most of us could see he had reached the end of the line.

Counting on Alou and Delgado can hurt them alot, its early but we will see.

    • m00kie says:

how could you “move” delgado after the season he has last year, with that contract?

      • m00kie says:

he “had” .. serious problems with my tenses today

      • Kevin Elster says:

Right, probably very hard if not impossible to do. But with that said if you could not move him then signing Alou was a bad decision since he is prone to injury. Bottom line is we , at the minimum, need one of them to contribute.

We all collectively breathed a sigh of relief when we signed Johan, but the road will not be easy thats for sure.

        • m00kie says:

agreed, but I don’t really see a lot of options that would have made it easier .. it’s not supposed to be easy anyway!

  11. Massey says:

As we all saw, Delgado has lost a ton of bat speed. In order to compensate, he swings earlier, leading to swinging at bad pitches and check-swing strikes.

I’ve never watched ST and have only really become a real baseball fan recently. Is there any precedent for a guy like that to be able to make adjustments and find his game again? Any reason at all to have some optimism?

  12. nevets72 says:

Has anyone had CDog go for an eye exam? Perhaps he need some spectacles.

  13. hot stove chef says:

Ichiro is like 0 for 21 this spring.

Let’s all take a deep breath and let Carlos adjust. Give the guy at least a couple of weeks to work out the kinks.

  14. tical1334 says:

I’m in no means bashing Omar, but I’m dumbfounded that he didnt bring in any decent backup 1st base options in the offseason after what we saw from Delgado last season. You had to have figured that at some point this season he would be on the DL or would need a backup for an extended period.

  15. alpitt says:

Man, why did we not sign Sean Casey?

  16. hot stove chef says:

By the way, I’m going to start an HGH pool for Carlos. Anyone want to donate?

  17. buenosdiazfive says:

Guys…chill on the Delgado bashing. Do you realize that he recovered from a broken wrist? You all sound like you were expecting Babe Ruth to be hitting. That takes time to be comfortable with his swing, timing, and rythm. There are two weeks left in ST, and alot of guys don’t pick up the momentum until late April. If he’s consistently going 0 for with tons of K’s by mid April, then we need to hit the panic button, bcuz by that time it probably means that his confidence will never recover. OUT!

    • Massey says:

You have to admit, it’s one thing to be a little off and quite another to look as bad as he has at the plate. Have you seen his AB’s? Getting beat on anything middle in, barely fouling off pitches, check swing strikes at balls in the dirt.

Hopefully he can turn it around, but I think it’s fair that we are concerned.

    • rd says:

Umm… How are you related to Delgado??

  18. mdemaio says:

Lost in the shuffle a bit was how good Heilman looked today…his change-up was fabulous…

Sanchez looked like he was trying to force it a little today…he got behind and grooved a fastball that was ripped for an RBI single. Couldn’t locate the fastball, but from my perspective it looked that way because he was overthrowing to try to get the velocity up. He looked frustrated.

I think it’s looking more and more like they’re inclined to go north with Wise, Register and Heilman with Feliciano and another lefty, with Sanchez building up arm strength in AAA for a while.

    • Massey says:

Yeah, the pitching has overall looked really good. Sanchez’s changeup was great, but he had trouble controlling the fastball.

All indications are that the Mets will carry 7 in the bullpen:
      Wagner, Heilman, Feliciano, Sosa, Show

If Wise keeps it up he’s in. I like Register, but he needs to do better to lock up the last spot. He could easily lose his spot to someone like Rincon or Figueroa. Hope the last two are Sanchez and Wise. We need a trade…

      • mdemaio says:

Given the uncertainty of Sanchez’’s health, I think it would be short-sighted to cut Register, who has to be on the ML roster on opening day if they want to keep him.

Wise has to be in as well…

    • stickguy says:

I think they should. That way, they get a real look at guys that they would otherwise lose, since they won’t be going to AAA>

Even worse, say the let Register go, then Sanchez gets hurt, and they got noone.

  19. helicopter ben johnson says:

Church made a nice play in the 3rd – showing excellent speed and flashing the leather on a ball in the gap. It was nice to see after the last year plus

  20. shamsky says:

Let’s face the facts folks. Hip injuries do not bode well for those who play baseball. The swing of the bat is a violent movement. I hope I’m wrong, but Mr. Delgado’s days as a big time and possibly even as a mid-level producer are likely over. As he’s a C- fielder, I suggest that Omar finds someone fast. Carlos D. may challenge Mr. Alou’s DL record in 2008.

  21. Chris in Japan says:

I’m sure that Omar has his eye on Delgado right now. If he still looks bad at the plate a couple of weeks from now, I would expect him to seriously consider bringing in somebody from outside. I think it’s too early to tell at this point.

Who would you say is the most competent backup option on the team right now? Valentin? Anderson?

I liked what I saw from Carp last spring, but he’s not healthy, is he?
