Read: Citi Field Going Green

by Chris Mazzone on March 13th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

In a special for MLB.com, Howard Kussoy writes about the Mets efforts to make Citi Field environmentally friendly.

“The $800 million structure is being built from approximately 95 percent recycled steel to reduce energy consumption and at least 2 million pounds of recycled coal combustion products that will save more than 800 tons of carbon dioxide. The team’s administration building will feature a 15,000-square-foot “green roof,” which will reduce energy needs by retaining cool air in the summer and heat in the winter.”

While we’re on the topic of ballparks, SI.com is conducting a survey to rank all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums, with the results to come out in April.

ESPN: Source says Citi All-Star in 2013

by Matthew Cerrone on March 13th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

In a report on ESPN Radio, Andrew Marchand quotes Jeff Wilpon as saying he will soon hear from MLB regarding when Citi Field will host the All-Star Game.

Marchand cites a baseball official as saying the Mets will likely play host in 2013.

For more, check out Marchand’s full report on ESPN.com.

…the Yankees will host the All-Star Game this season, in their old building…so, naturally, my first instinct is to wonder why the Mets are not hosting the game immediately…but, practically speaking, i suspect MLB would rather space out, and not have back-to-back games in New York City…this way, four other cities can profit from the game in between the Mets and Yankees…which is understable…i’m just impatient

Blog: The Big Pelf T-Shirt

by Matthew Cerrone on March 13th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

this is great…as my friend glenn would say, it’s out of standing

If you read Brooklyn Met Fan, like I do, you know the site’s author refers to Mike Pelfrey as ‘Big Pelf.’

By way of the Mets trainers, and BMF’s friends, Billy Wagner and Joe Smith were spotted during the team’s pre-game drills yesterday wearing t-shirts that read Go Big Pelf.

For more on the story, check out the Brooklyn Met Fan.

…i know this will bring in a variety of e-mails asking me what happened to the MetsBlog T-Shirts…all i can say is, i’m working on it…i expect new designs and a new point of sale to be ready by opening day…in the meantime, hat’s off to BMF…great work, man

Quote: Willie on Fernando Martinez

by Matthew Cerrone on March 13th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

In 34 at-bats this spring, Fernando Martinez is batting .294.

In a report on Martinez in the Journal News, John Delcos talks with David Wright, Tony Bernazard, Omar Minaya, Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez about the young outfielder’s future, work ethic and personality.

Willie Randolph, on Martinez, talking to reporters yesterday…

“Well, I’m just enjoying watching him. I mean, I’m not looking for him to show me anything. He’s a young player with a long way to go. It’s just nice to be able to see him play consistently…Every one knows he has the potential to be a good hitter, he has a nice approach for a young player, and he’s learning how to play defense, among other things. But, he’s really too young, I don’t look to evaluate him really because you have to see what he has first. When I’m looking at him now, I’m just trying to see what he’s all about. The potential is there, like I said.”

In a post to Dugout Central, Jesse Santos lists Martinez, along with Lastings Milledge, among others, as the top prospects in the National League East.

Opinion: When to Worry about Delgado

by Matthew Cerrone on March 13th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Carlos Delgado has struck out in all five at-bats since returning to action on Monday.

He has one hit in 11 at-bats during four games this spring.

…i have no idea how to evaluate him…again, like most of last year, he still looks over-matched on inside fastballs…for all the talk from him and the team about self-realization, evolving, adjusting his swing, etc, he still looks like the same delgado who hit .258 last season

Willie Randolph told reporters after yesterday’s game that it is still too early to be concerned with Delgado, “There’s a lot of guys who aren’t real good spring-training players, and he’s one of those guys.”

…this is true…to his credit, he is still working his way back from the hip situation that sidelined him a bit last year, and for several games this spring…but, is that the problem…

…is he too brittle to allow himself time to get in a groove…if he’s always returning from injury, will he ever allow himself the chance to adjust…that’s my fear, at this point…i’m comfortable with the idea of delgado batting fifth, hitting around .270 and knocking 25 home runs or so…i actually think that stat line will be more than fine, assuming every one else is doing their job…

…however, if he’s in a perpetual state of recovery, i worry he’ll be unable to hit even that well

In an effort to acquire a temporary replacement for Moises Alou, and a back-up first baseman to Delgado, Jeff Moore at Dugout Central suggests the Mets trade RHP Ambiorix Burgos, 2B Ruben Gotay and RHP Robert Parnell to the Orioles for 1B-OF Kevin Millar and OF Jay Payton.

Quote: Willie on Pagan

by Matthew Cerrone on March 13th, 2008 at 10:19 am

Angel Pagan hit a two-run home run yesterday.  He is batting .419 with 10 RBI in 15 games this spring.

Willie Randolph, on Pagan’s early, spring-training success, while speaking to reporters after yesterday’s game:

“I’ve seen this happen a lot in spring training.  The guys in a good rhythm, in a good groove, and determined to make the team.  I’ve seen that before, where guys go crazy in spring training.  Like I said, he’s in great shape, he’s matured a lot since the last time I saw him and he’s having a real good spring so far.  Still got a ways to go, though, so keep it going…

“A lot of kids have talent.  But a lot of time they do things on the bases or in the outfield that are not always instinctive. It doesn’t make it bad, but to be on a winning team – and to be a winner - you have to do a lot of things instinctively…You know, the first time I saw him he didn’t make good choices on the base paths, now he’s looking better at that.  That’s what I mean by maturing.  He had some really weird routes in the outfield, it seems to me that he’s learning how to get a better jump and take better routes.  I remember when I first saw him he was very raw…But hopefully with a couple years under his belt he’s learned some things, and it’s good to have him.  And, again, we’ll see how this all plays out.  I told the guys when spring training started, you’re not necessarily going to make this team just on batting average and stats.  I mean, we’re trying to put together a team that’s gonna help us win games.  So, it’s nice to go out and impress, but, when you get down to the end of the day, you have to do certain things to help us win a game.”

In a report for , despite having a personal stake in Pagan’s success, Ted Berg wonders why we are all getting so excited about Pagan, reminding of us of past, out-of-nowhere spring success stories, such as Butch Huskey.

Lastly, speaking of outfielders, in a column for Newsday, Anthony Rieber reminds us of Endy Chavez.
