Blog: Bubble gum, Clean-Up, College, Etc.
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 13, 2008 7:40 am

At MLB.com, Marty Noble breaks down yesterday’s ‘Bubblegate,’ in which Luis Castillo unknowingly spent most of the game with a crown of pink bubble gum on his hat.

…by the way, Bubblegate should be credited to a group of readers from this site’s comments section, who were using it all day yesterdaygood stuff

In a post to Shea Nation, Don Kachuba argues that David Wright should bat clean-up, behind Carlos Beltran.

John at Metstradamus provides a fill-in-the-blank trade rumor template, thanks to yesterday’s Coco Crisp incident.

According to their website, Edgewood College will take on the Mets in St. Lucie during a split-squad game on March 21.

…lastly, a few weeks ago, i purchased the Rotoworld Draft Kit, which recently won an award from the Fantasy Sports Trade Association…i just finished my fantasy draft, but, if you are still preparing, i highly recommend it…

This post brought to you by the folks at Rotoworld. Rotoworld: where stats come alive…

Seriously Matt, do you get a cut of Rotoworld Draft Kit sales? You’re pitching this thing pretty hard…

  3. VCarver says:

Nearly 400 posts yesterday on a trade that turned out to be bogus. LOL. Nice going Eddie Coleman.

I hate when people can’t take a simple joke.

  5. unbelcaffe says:

Wright is our best hitter and should be batting third.

    • Wright Stuff says:

Completely agree. Can’t we all agree that we are done batting wright anywhere other than third? What else does the guy have to do to prove he’s the best hitter on our team? Next someone’ll suggest we bat him 5th after Delgado to “give him protection”. Please.

      • Don says:

wright being the best hitter is precisely why he should protect another guy in beltran who can get more pithes to hit and punish the ball. beltran suffered with delgado behind him last year, much like he benfited from a stronger delgado backing him up the first year.

what rule says best hitter automatically has to be 3rd?

        • Another Matt says:

Uh… the rule that says he should get more at-bats?

Lineup protection can be statistically proven to be a false concept.

i gotta say, i don’t think i’ve ever read shea nation….and i can’t see any reason to support his argument about Wright batting 4th

  7. Ametfan says:

It looks like we REALLY need the season to get started. Folks are running out of things to write about. A totally fake trade rumor? Bubblegum? Plugs for Rotoworld? What’s next, Willie Randolph’s favorite recipies?

  8. CaseStreet says:

Yup. Wright batting third is best. Top of the lineup is sweet. Why mess with it?

I hope Castro isn’t impeached because of bubblegate.

  9. ohboy says:

    matt…

what kind of league and who’d you get?

  10. hotcorner5 says:

is it that time of the year where every Met fan tries to mess with the line up like they know something? damn… seems like January was just yesterday…

    • Don says:

ahaha. i guess i don’t “know something”. what else is a met blogger to do but suggest his outlook for the team lineup, whether unpopular or not?

i wasn’t aware that lineup protection was invalid. i just feel that people getting into laws and rules limits thought. i appreciate counterpoints and criticism; that’s what fan BSing is all about.

But how many more AB’s per game will Wright get batting 4th as opposed to third? I don’t imagine much. I just see the best hitter on the team with all the speed n front of him, making for the max RBI potential. Guys will pitch around Wright to get to Beltran, who is going to be about .030 points, or more, less likely to come through with a hit.

  11. WozzyBearRU says:

Seriosuly Matt, how many times will you shamelessly plug Rotoworld? how much are they paying you?

  12. Cousinjoey says:

David Wright is our best hitter and the best hitter should always bat third. Not to mention, that DW isn’t ideally suited for the clean-up spot. The 4 hole is better suited for a flyball/homerun hitter (like Beltran). DW has home run power, but is more of an oppositte field (singles, doubles and occasional homeruns) hitter. That’s why he is better served in the 3 spot. I think Beltan finally settled into his spot when he was moved to the 4 spot. He didn’t hit for much average, but his power numbers were really good. Beltran will never be a high average guy anyway. Another reason he should bat cleanup.

    That’s my opinion anyway.

    • Don says:

oh and regarding power. i say wright hits 33 HR this year and Beltran, if healthy enough to get out there for 150+ games, hits 37. I don’t see such a close homerun deferential as enough of a factor to overwhelm my perspective regarding average.

With Reyes, Castillo, and Beltran ahead of him. You have your best chance of getting your best hitter to the plate with a runner on.
