Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports RHP Kyle Lohse has agreed to a one-year contract with the Cardinals.Lohse was 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA in 34 games with the Reds and Phillies last season.

…i had interest in the Mets signing lohse to provide some depth to the starting rotation, but not for the $4.25 million he reportedly received from the Cardinals

…thanks to Peter Wade for the link…

who cares …. althought i guess if he had a solid season, it will be nice to not see philly as the team benefitting from it

It’s relevance to us is as another loss for the Phillies. I still don’t see how anyone could say that team improved.

f*ck the cards!

Gilch March 13, 2008 at 5:39 pm

agreed
the team to beat? lol
someone needs to remind them they didnt even win 90 games..
and it took an utter disaster for a NLE title ….
jroll, chase and ryan, meet Mr Johan

As mediocre as he is, he made the Phillies staff “just good enough” last year and he’ll probably make the Cards a better team this year; I’m glad the Phils lost him.

Thank GOD!–What happen to 4 years- 40 Million?

the clap March 13, 2008 at 5:57 pm

This is what Lohse should be asking Scott Boras (as he fires him).

metsdude13 March 13, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Man, is this not proof that Scott Boras is the worst agent ever?

10%!!!! He got 10% of what he was offered in December!

Hire me, Kyle! i would have taken the first deal!

ndk5 March 13, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Wait, you were not interested in Lohse for 4.25 million for one year. I’m shocked we didn’t sign him to this deal. I’ll bet he didn’t want to come here and not be guaranteed a starting spot. Pelfrey is no sure thing and El Duque may or may not be able to pitch. This could come back to haunt us when we’re starting Sosa for 5 innings or rushing Neise.

Gilch March 13, 2008 at 6:30 pm

when our front 4 starters are all on pace to win 15+ games … if pelf/ duque/niese arent pitching well, or are hurt ….. im not going to cry about missing out on Lohse lol

ndk5 March 13, 2008 at 6:34 pm

well i think you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think we’re dangerously shallow at SP. If Martinez is healthy all year i’ll be shocked. If El Duque pitches more than 120 innings i’ll be shocked. I have no doubt that we’ll be trying out pitchers at some point this summer. And fighting for our life against the braves and phillies all year, you may be crying when we haul out our poo poo platter of SP reserves

Gilch March 13, 2008 at 6:32 pm

in a perfect world duque is health… or he isnt, but pelf is pitching well …. even in a non perfect world ….im sure that some combination thru 2008 of pelf, duque, sosa, etc. can provide 10 wins… no?
who really needs more than that from the 5 spot

ndk5 March 13, 2008 at 6:37 pm

1) you can never have enough starting pitching
2) Pelfrey may not be the ansewr
3) Even young healthy players get hurt
4) El Duque WILL get hurt
5) Pedro probably will get hurt

I think those are all very fair comments. We have very little wiggle room with our starting pitching. And we may need 94+ wins to make the playoffs this year.

Gilch March 13, 2008 at 6:41 pm

all those comments are well thought out …. but lets face it.. we arent playing MLB 2k8 or fantasy baseball…. we cant just sign 8 starters and let the best 5 have spots …. pitchers like Lohse want a guaranteed starting spot … ane we both know this team cant guarantee him that

Gilch March 13, 2008 at 6:42 pm

whose the braves 4 and 5?
and the phils?
to call our rotation shallow compared to both of those teams is just totaly incorrect

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 14, 2008 at 8:21 pm

When you consider the fact that– due to injuries and other unforeseen events– most MLB teams are forced to use at least 7-8 pitchers for multiple (read: 5+) starts per season, and that we don’t have that many serviceable options (IOW– a significant dropoff from the quality of our front 4 to the 2 potential 5ths, and a SEVERE dropoff from there to the rest) beneath…

… we are a VERY shallow team, SP-wise. You CAN argue that the Phils and Braves might be worse off, SP-wise. If you’re talking about quality/durability of top-4 starters, you’d be right. If you’re talking about depth, you’d be wrong– with a number of young, potentially-frisky SPs in the upper minors, the Braves are better off than the Phils and our Mets here.

Gilch March 13, 2008 at 6:44 pm

i duno… i mean i agree for under 5mill he was worth a flyer.. just cant guarantee the guy a starting spot

reyesrules March 13, 2008 at 6:48 pm

i would have signed him, overpaid simply because IT IS A ONE YEAR DEAL. one year, then you are done if it is a mistake.

this couldve allowed pelfrey to move to the Pen and been DOMINATING 7th / 8th inning guy. could you imagine having pelfrey and heilman, feliciano and maybe sanchez to get to Wagner?

and if Loshe stunk, just one year no worries!

i am fine though, either way LETS GO METS

Slob March 13, 2008 at 6:57 pm

So much for that 4 year, $40M deal, eh Kyle?

jlazar2 March 13, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Hell, i would have upped it to 1 year, 5 million
This would have been a good signing for the Mets, especially for one year, because not only can he be a capable starter, he can also pitch in relief

Gilch March 13, 2008 at 8:20 pm

pelfrey a dominating 7th , 8th inning pitcher? lol

piazzadabm March 13, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Gotta disagree with Nichols here. I would be very interested in Lohse for a 1 year 4.25 million deal. That’s about as cheap as you’re gonna get him. We pay El Duque more than that.

Nate W. March 13, 2008 at 9:27 pm

yea, I would have given him this deal, but the fact of the matter is that the Cardinals need him more and would likely up the price just enough to outbid the Mets. (assuming both bid within the realm of sanity) They have multiple rotation spots open while the Mets may have one, but might not… Seems like he and the Cardinals are a good match for both sides.

s-mets March 13, 2008 at 10:20 pm

thank god he is not coming here..even for a year

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger March 14, 2008 at 8:26 pm

We could have had Lohse and Clements here– with room for, say, another minor-league contract or two– for about the same guaranteed money/time commitment that we’re giving El Duque for the same.

Someone put my eyes out.
