We could have had Lohse and Clements here– with room for, say, another minor-league contract or two– for about the same guaranteed money/time commitment that we’re giving El Duque for the same.

When you consider the fact that– due to injuries and other unforeseen events– most MLB teams are forced to use at least 7-8 pitchers for multiple (read: 5+) starts per season, and that we don’t have that many serviceable options (IOW– a significant dropoff from the quality of our front 4 to the 2 potential 5ths, and a SEVERE dropoff from there to the rest) beneath…

… we are a VERY shallow team, SP-wise. You CAN argue that the Phils and Braves might be worse off, SP-wise. If you’re talking about quality/durability of top-4 starters, you’d be right. If you’re talking about depth, you’d be wrong– with a number of young, potentially-frisky SPs in the upper minors, the Braves are better off than the Phils and our Mets here.

yea, I would have given him this deal, but the fact of the matter is that the Cardinals need him more and would likely up the price just enough to outbid the Mets. (assuming both bid within the realm of sanity) They have multiple rotation spots open while the Mets may have one, but might not… Seems like he and the Cardinals are a good match for both sides.

Gotta disagree with Nichols here. I would be very interested in Lohse for a 1 year 4.25 million deal. That’s about as cheap as you’re gonna get him. We pay El Duque more than that.

Hell, i would have upped it to 1 year, 5 million
This would have been a good signing for the Mets, especially for one year, because not only can he be a capable starter, he can also pitch in relief

i would have signed him, overpaid simply because IT IS A ONE YEAR DEAL. one year, then you are done if it is a mistake.

this couldve allowed pelfrey to move to the Pen and been DOMINATING 7th / 8th inning guy. could you imagine having pelfrey and heilman, feliciano and maybe sanchez to get to Wagner?

and if Loshe stunk, just one year no worries!
