First, at Pick Me Up Some Mets, Zoe provides a few photos and video from Luis Castillo’s Bubblegate.
According to this MySpace page, “Joe Smith is God.”
…hat tip to Steve Popper’s Amazin Stories for the link…
Next, in a lengthy – but outstanding – column for the New York Post, Kevin Kernan catches up with Dwight
Gooden and his son, Dwight Jr., who is working to start a rap career with the help of his father.
Kernan writes of Gooden: “Life consists of helping Dwight Jr. with his music career, going to his daughter’s high school softball games, his sons’ Little League, AAU baseball and basketball games, helping the teams out, and his grandson’s T-ball games and staying straight…He begins each day with meditation to stay calm.”
Also in the New York Post, Bart Hubbach provides a profile of Angel Pagan, who entered the day batting .400 this spring.
In the Journal News, John Delcos writes about Jose Reyes, and the shortstop’s new, more professional approach to baseball, while talking with David Wright, Willie Randolph, Tony Bernazard and Jerry Manuel, who is quoted as saying:
“Last year was a painful time for him, but growth can sometimes be painful. He’s going to be better for it. You can see it with him now. He seems to have a renewed focus.”
Lastly, in a post to MLB.com, Marty Noble catches up with 1B Mike Carp, who is currently in minor league camp.

I just have this feeling that Jose is going to rake this season. The maturity is palpable. I like to hear that he’s more business this year, but I hope flashes of that Reyes excitement come through at times…
i’m expecting big things from her atop of that order
Nice about Carp. I didn’t realize he was recovering from that kind of injury. And if he really has “rebuilt” his swing, he could be a candiate for a bust-out year in AA. He is also still just 21, according to Noble.
Who knows, by September, he could be getting his cup o’ Joe, and be in the mix to replace Delgado next year. Maybe in a platoon?
Wasn’t there an article last week about Strawberry which talks about how Gooden isn’t staying clean? Which to believe?
Well with Dwight and Daryl it’s tough to believe either one. It’s a great story and I wish nothing but the best for the Gooden’s but it seems like every even year we read the Dwight getting his life back in track story and every odd year we read Dwight back in jail story.
This guy was my favorite Met and favorite athlete when that stuff was the most important thing in a pre-teen’s life. I could rattle off his stats and game logs like it was the alphabet so I am really rooting for the guy but if he is not the cautionary and stereotypical story about a poor kid getting a ton of money and little oversight…
But man those 84 and 85 seasons were once in a lifetime.
I dont care what anyone says or that he played for mine enemy…i will ALWAYS have a soft spot for the Doc
I can’t believe that the Post has a caption of Doc saying “Good Ol Days” with him in a Yankee uni….thats just wrong
Dwight needs to remember he’s a Met and will always be one. We saw him when he was clean & great and we think of him as one of ours.
In 12 step, aren’t you supposed to drop any bad influences in your life? He needs to drop his short term memory and realize Yankee fans don’t’ care about him.
By attaching himself to the enemy, he’s hurting his baseball family. He was a Met for 10 years and had all his great moments (sans the Met No hitter curse at work) in our uniform, in our building and in front of us.
I also hate the media always bringing up the Yankee thing like a decade of greatness on the Mets never happened…
(same with Cone.. but that’s another story)
Ok, i thought your first post was bad (both times you posted it), but “we saw him when he was CLEAN”???
First time around these parts?
Doc missed the effing PARADE because he was too yayed up. I mean, i love Doc (as i said in my previous post), but he was blowin back then too.
If you knew the correct history, Mets wanted nothing to do with the guy until George Steinbrenner gave him a job both during and after his career and NEVER turned his back on him. Say what you will about the d*ck, but this was one of the only things i always liked about George, his ever-ending kindness towards a man when he was down.
I disagree… If George was such a holy man… why wasn’t Dale Berra and the bunch of Yankee drug addicts under his wing. It was all to stain the Mets brand and make himself look good…
The Mets wanted nothing to do with him because the Wilpons wouldn’t know good PR if it were wrapped around Jessica Alba.
The fans never left until they saw him in pinstripes.
Also, if you had read my “bad” post correctly, I drew a line between Dwight and Doc. He came back after 86 as “Doc” and was never the same.
Young and Clean was 84-85.
Two problems with the Dwight article…
“Doc” Gooden was a Yankee… but Dwight Gooden, THE Dwight Gooden never played in Yankee stadium. He was my favorite player on the Mets back in the day and I remember him being replaced by some guy named “Doc” who’s curveball wasn’t as good.
Next, Rap isn’t music. It’s talking OVER music. Kind of like if you’re listening to a nice groove, but suddenly find yourself in 6th grade and some loud mouth wants attention and starts saying stupid things until all you hear his him.
Translation:
Word dawg why I be trippin? I ain’t down with that aight?
You ain’t down with yourself tripping? Well I wouldn’t think anyone is to be honest with you. And one idea for ya… tell that to a rap artist’s face. What was classic rock? But songs about drugs and alcohol and sex. Exactly what is the difference here?
“tell that to a rap artist’s face”… exactly. If it was about music and art alone… I’d be able to without getting shot.
Gooden not only had his best years with the Mets but spent the majority of his career in a Met uniform and I’m amazed at how utterly clueless some writers are towards this fact. Baffling!
slightly off topic, but I was watching the phoenix suns and Daryls son, D.J Strawberry was playing. The announcers went on to show clips of his dad playing baseball, all in Yankee gear. Never once mentioned the Mets – So pathetic.
