Read: Fatherhood Has Changed Beltran
By Chris Mazzone - Mar 14, 2008 1:44 am

Marty Noble at MLB.com writes about the impact fatherhood has had on Carlos Beltran.

“Beltran’s expression changes when he speaks of his new level of happiness and the daughter responsible for it. A soft glow develops and sincerity takes over. Smiles last longer and are more plentiful. He appears younger and gentler and far less circumspect. In clubhouse parlance, he is looser.”

...i love articles like this…i feel like way too often people look at players as money grubbing, moving statistics and forget they are human beings with lives outside of baseball that could certainly influence their performance on the field…regardless of if this has any impact on beltran’s play i’m extremely happy for carlos and his family and wish them the best of luck…

I guarantee you those haters still don’t give a damn.

well im sure beltran wont be getting too much sleep for a bit…just hope he doesnt go thru the delgado new born swooon of last year…
regardless tho, congrats to carlos (and his wife!)…..gotta be amazing!

well, he did have the kid last oct, so you would hope by four and half months the kid is sleeping through the night and carlos is back to his normal routine. for any baseball player, late oct/early nov is the best time to have a kid from a sleep perspective.

i would know about the sleep…i’m up right now at 4:30am because we have a 7 day old keeping us up.

Congrats, Charlie! My daughter was born in October (17th), so I can identify with the lack of sleep. But, I can also identify with the “new level of happiness.” She’s got her “Little NY Mets Fan” bib and her Opening Day shirt (”My First NY Mets Tee”) already. And, she sleeps through the night . . .

Getting back to the purpose of the thread, maybe it was that new “looseness” that caused him to realize, “Hey–they’re paying me for a reason here. I need to prove them right.” And, we have the comment to Rollins.

He’ll be there when the bell rings. He’ll answer it.

        • Charlie says:

thanks! and, i agree. i think carlos b is going to have a huge season.

before all this health stuff came up i was also expecting a big year out of beltran. im still a little worried about his knees but hopefully he’ll be able to get through that.

as it turns out, ryan church left the team yesterday because his wife is going to give birth (she’s getting induced) today. so, let’s see if he falls asleep in RF in the coming weeks.

I can attest that fatherhood changes you. It did to me. It made me a better person.

As far as the sleep, I was very lucky. My son slept through the night at 3 weeks old.

  4. VCarver says:

It’s nice to see how fatherhood has brought a new sense of purpose and peace and calm to Beltran’s life. I think it’ll help him on the field.

The NYT’s also did a real nice story today about Beltran’s new status as a father. It reveals that his wife had a second miscarriage during the 2006 playoffs:

“The promise of parenthood lifted the Beltráns’ spirits twice before, and twice before they had been disappointed. Jessica could not carry to term either time. Her second miscarriage was in October 2006, while the Mets were in the playoffs. Beltrán said he did not talk publicly about it; he did not want it to be perceived as an excuse or a distraction.”

So next time anyone wants to bring up the third called strike that ended the NLCS, think of what Beltran had gone through during that time.

If Beltran’s knees allow him to play in the field for most of the season,, I predict another MVP-type season from him. Maybe this is the year he or Wright get the award, along with a WS ring!

I knew about the first one, but I had not heard about the 2nd. Thanks for the info.

I know fatherhood can really change you, so I hope he enjoys all his moments with his new daughter. Congrats Carlos!

“He appears younger and gentler and far less circumspect. In clubhouse parlance, he is looser”

In fact, Carlos said himself that he is feeling 86.62% looser

you think when she was born, they had his entrance music blaring in the hospital?

    Maybe change the lyrics to:
    “Ella esta acqui…..ella esta acqui”
