before all this health stuff came up i was also expecting a big year out of beltran. im still a little worried about his knees but hopefully he’ll be able to get through that.

as it turns out, ryan church left the team yesterday because his wife is going to give birth (she’s getting induced) today. so, let’s see if he falls asleep in RF in the coming weeks.

It’s nice to see how fatherhood has brought a new sense of purpose and peace and calm to Beltran’s life. I think it’ll help him on the field.

The NYT’s also did a real nice story today about Beltran’s new status as a father. It reveals that his wife had a second miscarriage during the 2006 playoffs:

“The promise of parenthood lifted the Beltráns’ spirits twice before, and twice before they had been disappointed. Jessica could not carry to term either time. Her second miscarriage was in October 2006, while the Mets were in the playoffs. Beltrán said he did not talk publicly about it; he did not want it to be perceived as an excuse or a distraction.”

So next time anyone wants to bring up the third called strike that ended the NLCS, think of what Beltran had gone through during that time.

If Beltran’s knees allow him to play in the field for most of the season,, I predict another MVP-type season from him. Maybe this is the year he or Wright get the award, along with a WS ring!

I can attest that fatherhood changes you. It did to me. It made me a better person.

As far as the sleep, I was very lucky. My son slept through the night at 3 weeks old.

Congrats, Charlie! My daughter was born in October (17th), so I can identify with the lack of sleep. But, I can also identify with the “new level of happiness.” She’s got her “Little NY Mets Fan” bib and her Opening Day shirt (“My First NY Mets Tee”) already. And, she sleeps through the night . . .

Getting back to the purpose of the thread, maybe it was that new “looseness” that caused him to realize, “Hey–they’re paying me for a reason here. I need to prove them right.” And, we have the comment to Rollins.

He’ll be there when the bell rings. He’ll answer it.
