You kinda need to know the backstory on the Anderson Joes' logo (and name) for it to actually be zany. Anderson, SC is just a few miles where Joe Jackson grew up. While playing the Anderson semi-pro team (Jackson played for Greenville's semi-pro team), well, I'll let Jackson recount it...

"As I pulled into third [he smoked a triple], some big guy [playing for Anderson] stood up and hollered: 'You shoeless sonofagun, you!' They picked it up and started calling me Shoeless Joe all around the league, and it stuck. I never played the outfield barefoot, but it just stuck with me."
-Joe Jackson

Basically, an unknown member of the Anderson ballclub coined Shoeless Joe Jackson's nickname by Joe's own admission. Doesn't sound too zany? Well, what I find zany is your team wanting to be remembered for intentionally dogging it in the field (to be fair, Shoeless Joe did hit in the '19 WS...he couldn't bring himself not to)...

Anyone have any idea when voting for the Sand Gnats opens in round 2? The first round voting moved pretty quickly. The Wichita Wingnuts look tougher than a 12 seed. Maybe Matt can let us know so we can do our part.

as this seems like as good a place as any for some minor league news...

The Binghamton Mets collected five hits and scored their first two runs of the spring, finishing in a 2-2 tie Saturday against the Springfield Cardinals, the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Mets plated both runs in the third inning. Daniel Murphy scored Jose Coronado on an RBI triple, one of his two hits in the game. Mike Carp, who went 1-for-4, drove Murphy home.

Starting pitcher Salvador Aguilar pitched two scoreless innings, adding a strikeout. Kevin Tomasiewicz also went two innings, giving up one earned run. Edward Kunz, the New York Mets' top pick in last year's draft, tossed two scoreless innings and racked up two strikeouts for the B-Mets.

The B-Mets, which will take today off before hosting Springfield again Monday, open their season against the Trenton Thunder at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at NYSEG Stadium.
