Carlos Delgado left the game after being cut on the elbow with the barrel-end of a broken bat, which hit him as he was taking a lead from third base. Delgado received four stitches in his right forearm, according to the team.
Delgado told reporters that he expects to be sidelined for at least a few days.
Ramon Castro left yesterday’s game after tweaking the same right hamstring that had kept him out of action the previous week.
Castro told reporters that he didn’t pull ‘nothing,’ and that the hamstring stopped hurting as soon as he stopped running.
He is scheduled to have an MRI today.
Over the weekend, Willie Randolph told reporters that Brian Schneider might not play until Wednesday. Schneider has also been bothered by a tight hamstring.
Randolph also suggested to reporters that Jose Valentin could start the season on the disabled list or in Triple-A.

Delgado can’t catch a break these days
Get used to it.
Actually, he did catch a break….From a bat unfortunately.
(Sorry guys, could not resist)
too easy
His other break was that the Mets don’t have a game until Wednesday, so he isn’t missing as many games as he otherwise would have
Hopefully Valentin doesnt become a sore spot, they did a good job of moving out the selfish guys last year.
He has an opt out on May 1st if he isnt on the ML roster, and its probably just as well… Gotay is more versitile and more valuable.
Gotay should have time to get back if he gets into games in the next couple days. Hopefully they dont take them both to Miami, because they wont know anything more about them both by April 12th when they will have to removed a bench player for a 5th starter.
Ok I have some problems with this:
“Hopefully Valentin doesnt become a sore spot, they did a good job of moving out the selfish guys last year.”
Since when did Valentin become a selfish player? It seems as though Valentin has actually been a good role model and is respected.
“Gotay is more versitile and more valuable. ” Other than youth, exactly how is Gotay more versitile. Can Gotay play LF, RF and 1B along with 3B and 2B? Not even looking at the fact that Valentin was a SS by trade. I know he’s old but he is more versitile. As for value, you are talking about 2 bits and a quarter.
“As for value, you are talking about 2 bits and a quarter.”
well I’ll agree with that part of it…
Valentin’s recent comments about not going to AAA are what lead to the selfish comment. The Mets have no need for Valentin or Gotay in the OF with Marlon Anderson and Endy on the team. And I have confidence that Gotay could play 1B if needed, which he isnt.
Valentin is better than Gotay in areas where the Mets would have either one of them at 4th or 5th on the depth chart. Why are you debating those points where there are relivent ones to discuss?
hey…question…when nwas last time you cut yourself…needed 4 stitches…and then was able to tell your boss you couldnt work for a few days?
its a CUT !!!…not a broken bone…not a torn hammy…a cut !
shilling pitched with a ketchupy-sock…
robt redford batted with an open wound at his appendix
delgado cant play first base cause he cut his arm??
can we just start a covert fan action now, and convince texiera he HAS to play for mets next yr?
i knew there would be people like you…
Listen, I don’t talk about any injuries, especially if it hasn’t happened to me…
Yes, its a cut, but …how many times has a bat thats broken hit you in the arm? It could be bruised pretty bad…and hes playing it safe…and as someone mentioned, they have an away game today and a night game on Wednesday
And lets remember, maybe you haven’t been able to work a few days at your job..but I gotta say…most of us could probably work our jobs with a broken finger, or with a bum knee..hell I did a few years ago….
Stop acting like you know….talk about him if he isn’t hitting…or whatever..but you have no idea how hes feeling and I for one, would rather him be healthy
Its probably the best way to let the wound heal. Then again Delgado doesnt swing the bat fast enough for it to really be an issue…
When was the last time you suffered an injury to the part of your body most critical to your job, and worked through it despite the fact that doing so came with a very strong chance of reinjuring yourself?
Did you not hear Ralph Kiner talking about how forearm strength was the most important strength for hitting during the game? If Delgado plays before the gash is healed, he’ll probably rip out the stitches.
it IS a cut, but when you get stitches it has to heal before you can do anything to avoid it re-opening. im not a doctor but im sure you dont want to risk infection either by getting the cut dirty. ive only gotten stiches once, in HS, and i remember my doctor telling me i couldnt play the next day bc i would risk infection. i played anyway but it was a very big game (playoffs) im sure delgado would be out there if this were september but its not.
This is a fragile, fragile team. It’s a poorly constructed roster and we may never see them at full strength or anything close to it all year long.
It’s a poorly constructed team. Blast Omar for signing Ryan Church to go into a collision with Marlon Anderson and blast Delgado for getting hit with a splintered bat, how dare Omar sign these players!
We might as well blame Omar for Matt Wise’s injuries as well!
matt Wise is hurt? Must have missed that one…
I personally though am looking forward to seeing the Robinson Cancel era at catcher begin. he just might end up being the opening day catcher!
The preponderance of comments on this blog look as if they were written by Woody Allen’s movie characters.
Chicken Littles…
The poster above said about a poorly constructed team. It must mean that he didn’t want Beltran, he’d rather have Victor Diaz in centerfield, he’d certainly track those balls down in center!
No one ever critiqued Omar (only sang his praises) until the Mets began losing (to the Cardinals in ‘06 and in September of ‘07). Before that he was a genius.
How fickle we are.
interesting development…

“It was only a week ago that the Mets’ senior utility man appeared to be a lock for the Opening Day roster. Now, Jose Valentin’s career could be over. Valentin said this morning that he’s suffering from a pinched nerve, which is the result of two discs in his upper back/neck causing the discomfort. Valentin plans to return to New York this week for an anti-inflammatory injection, but if that fails to solve the problem, he’s unsure of what his next move will be. At this point, Valentin sounds reluctant to have surgery, and if he chooses not to, that decision could prematurely end his career at age 38.”
Crazy, although I really didn’t expect him to make the team. But that’s too bad.
same list as above.
“Jason Vargas will have surgery today in Vail, Colo., to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. I always thought a labrum was only shoulder-related, but I guess that’s why I’m a reporter and not an orthopedist.” – David Lennon
Could make Willie’s decision for him… at least it makes the team a little younger if the ’stache is done. Also removes us having to find out the hard way if he has any range left at this point.
Also, looking at his quote from that article really makes it hard to cast him as selfish:
“Just give a chance to a young kid, give him a chance to earn some money,” Valentin said. “My career has been good enough. I’ll go to Plan B — coach, be with my family. Live ‘La Vida Loca.’ Have fun.”
Sounds more like self-aware than selfish to me.
its a completely different situation than his other quotes.
I didnt copy that quote because it sounds like Valentin has conceded he is retiring, which isnt the case… yet.
Wouldn’t mind seeing him back as a coach. He could even take over for Willie if the need arises! He does have actual managerial experience (in the winter leagues).
That’s a really nice thing to say. Seems like he’s really a nice guy.
