In a report for the Star-Tribune, Joe Christensen profiles Twins RHP Phil Humber, who will make his first Grapefruit League start today following five relief appearances, during which he did not allow a run in nine innings.

according to Joe Christensen…the Twins…in the Star-Tribune…ah, good times, good times

In Newsday, the happy-go-lucky Wallace Matthews takes a closer look at the businesses behind Shea Stadium – and what the future holds for them in the wake of Citi Field.

MetsBlog reader Jack S attended yesterday’s game in Viera between the Mets and Nationals, and he has posted a terrific photo album from his day, which you can access by clicking here.

…lastly, as i have mentioned before, a few weeks ago, i purchased the Rotoworld Draft Kit…i already finished my fantasy draft, but, if you are still preparing, i highly recommend it…

To purchase the Rotoworld Draft Kit, click here.

i was able to keep Ryan Church from last season…i drafted Luis Castillo as a back-up second baseman…meaning i have two Mets…which i try to avoid…that said, go church and castillo

i havent decided on an opinion as far as the chopshops go. i used to go there for spare parts when i was younger. it would be nice, however, to have a bar or restaurant to go to before/after the game and not have to walk over the bridge to northern…

  2. Gland says:

Out of curiosity, Matt, do you get some sort of kickback from RotoWorld? That’s like the third or fourth time you’ve plugged their draft kit.

    • DaveyS says:

My guess is yes… If you look at the link there is a “referby” in the URL.

      • Gland says:

Oh look at that. Good pick up.

      • theperfectgame says:

Hey, back off, he’s just going through the same natural cycle that many baseball players go through.

Step 1: Work extremely hard giving yourself the best possible chance to succeed.

Step 2: Get a little lucky.

Step 3: Sign with an agent (i.e. SNY).

Step 4: Whore yourself out to anyone who will throw money at you (this step combines free agency and endorsements). –

Step 5: Have a long and prosperous career.

Step 6: Fade away as a newer, better prospect gradually takes your place.

(I know I left out a few steps like “accidentally” stick a needle in your pooper, DUI, testify before Congress, etc, but not everything is analogous to the baseball player’s career cycle)

The product placement bugs me too, but when I weigh the pros and cons, I still find myself coming here first for my Mets info. And in fairness, if I were in Matt’s blue and orange shoes, I can’t say I’d be doing it any differently. After all, the only thing better than doing what you love is doing what you love and making as much money as possible while doing it, right? Hooray Capitalism!

        • ohboy says:

let the kid make a little money. a pop-up here…a referral link there…does it really impact you? At all? You people amaze me

        • kowalski69 says:

the plugs i dont mind. the sny popup window? different story.

        • ravi3 says:

Ok, well consider the fact that the blog is Matt’s livelihood….If you were in his shoes, you would do what ever you could to take care of you and your wife as well…Get a pop-up blocker, and get a life

        • kowalski69 says:

jeez i apologize for pissing you off. i’ll take your advice and try to get a life

        • Saltzy23 says:

          2 thoughs if I may…

First, on the redevelopment of the Iron Triangle. Its called progress. I have had it UP TO HERE with the bottom half of this country b*tching cause the world is passing them by and ‘taking advantage of them’….boo hoo. I say lets wait for them to catch up. Lets let the city fall apart cause they cant figure it out. That seems logical. Which is it? The city lets the neighborhood fall apart and they b*tch cause they are neglected. The city decides to invest money and they are being pushed out. Either way…SOMEBODY elses fault….ALWAYS somebody elses fault….

On the ‘commercialization’ of this site. Im torn. Like someone said, Im sure if I was in his position I’d be doing the same thing. Its just when the ‘Opening Day bar room meet up’ post gets taken down you start to wonder who are the powers that be. It seems to me that originally SNY told him to make it ‘family friendly’, but everyone started screaming that their posts were getting screened. That made the site suck. Matt knew it was ruining the essence of what this was(is) I think(guessing) SNY basically said ‘Fine, YOU have to present the site in a certain way(pop-ups, logos, references to programming, etc)…..but outside of a few choice words and phrases let the comments section go….I havent had a post screened in months. Its a fair trade off IMO…

        • Cerrone says:

The Opening Day Happy Hour post was pulled, because 400 people responded yes, and that was all I needed to know.

The post was for me to learn of interest. End of story.

Since then, I’ve been working to put the party together.

        • Saltzy23 says:

Wow….I got a response from the ‘Godfather’ himself, my day has been made!….

Thanks. Thats all I wanted to know. Faith has been restored….Long live Metsblog!!!

        • gipper913 says:

Cerrone would not let SNY have editorial control – he knows that would be the dealth knell of Metsblog and, frankly, he has way too much integrity to go down that road.

  3. gottabelieve07 says:

In his usual fashion Matthews paints any negative spin possible on the Mets. He basically wrote the exact same article on the topic right about the same time last year.

The boo hoo cries from the chop shops don’t earn much sympathy from local residents and Queens natives. Why? Because it’s fairly well understood what sort of business is done there. For far too long they have dominated prime real estate that could go a long way in improving not only the area around Citi Field, but the areas of access to Flushing Meadow Park, Flushing Bay, and alot of College Point / Willets Point in general.

Chicago has Wrigleyville. Baltimore has the area surrounding Camden. They only do good for the cities they exist in. Citi Field should have it’s equivalent, as should the residents of Queens.

    • ravi3 says:

Matthews also wrote the same exact article about a year ago

    • Roach2 says:

As someone who grew up in one of the areas you listed, I agree 150%

A lot of bleeding hearts on here have sympathy for these people because they see them as such “hard working” individuals. They work very hard when they’re dismantling your stolen car….

Tear ‘em down…give them their settlements and add some life into that area

  4. Felix the Cat says:

The area needs to be cleaned up. The business owners will get more than fair compensation. The public wants this and not just the developers who stand to make a fortune.

My 20 year old roto league is made up of mostly Mets fans so mets players tend to go overvalued in our auction.

BTW, anyone get their Mets season tickets yet????

    • Saltzy23 says:

NO….WTF….late March?….Sox tickets get sent out as soon as the schedule gets released…..My Yanks fans have theirs…..we have to wait until essentially the week of the season…..

      • Giaco says:

i’m still waiting for my citi field brick AND my season tickets!!

        • Saltzy23 says:

I got my brick already. They actually are really nice……I wanted to hear some other people inscriptions. We are a pretty inventive fan base. There are gonna be some good ones….I bought the big one, so it’s 15 characters per line….after 2 weeks I came up with…

          Orange and Blue
          Amazin’ Since 62
          My Name.

        • Giaco says:

I bought the smaller brick… very limited options

  5. RomanWarHelmet says:

I hope that one day someone does an investigative report on what the Wilpon family did to Wallace Matthews. They may have killed a parent…maybe just run over his dog…I don’t know but his personal vendetta against the Mets is borderline insane. I am all for criticism but this man obviously learned from the Phil Mushnick another guy who never finds anything nice to say about anyone. As for the chop shops…I am not about running people out of business and what the city has done over there is ridiculous…you can even drive a car over 15 mph on those roads and god forbid it rains its like a flood…with that said if these guys can be given the same type of property some place else (lots of run down unused property in the Bronx.)..I may not feel as bad

  6. Steal Home Jose! says:

Luis castillo as a backup 2B? There better be 20 teams in your league. If not, the Rotoworld draft kit sucks…

  7. VCarver says:

I don’t read Matthews because I know I won’t be getting an objective story. So I just ignore his agenda-driven stories. What surprises me is that Newsday continues to give him a platform from which to spew his invective.

Now on to pleasant things … Good for Humber for getting a start and I hope he succeeds. He deserves a spot with the Twins, and if I were a Twins fan I’d be upset they signed LIvan who is having a bad spring. At least Humber has upside and the Twins should view 2008 as a building year for him as well as their other kids. Why waste $5 million on an older starter who even in the NL couldn’t produce a respectable ERA, and whose innings pitched are declining?

  8. pyrexia says:

Don’t bother linking this guy’s articles anymore, unless Mets fans beg for a reason to be dour. Mathews has proven time and again to hate everything Mets and will never find a positive word to say about them. In Mathew’s Feb. 28th column, he made this disturbing analogy in relation to Pedro and a contract extension:

Chutzpah is having the audacity to murder your parents and then begging for leniency because you are an orphan. Right now, Pedro Martinez is Chutzpah.

    Patricide. Contract. Patricide. Contract.

2+ weeks later and I’m still at a loss for words…

  9. ndk5 says:

Wait…you KEPT Church and drafted Castillo. That’s like saying, hey guys i got this great stock tip. I bought up a bunch of bear stearns stock at $60 last week.

    • boozermetsfan says:

      great pics.

yeah there is no good reason castillo should be drafted on any fantasy baseball team. even as a backup. i’de take kaz matsui over castillo.

    • djbutler says:

Church and Castillo as your backups, that’s not so good, what is this an NL Only 12 team auction league, otherwise I want to be in Matt’s fantasy league, so I can take his money.

  10. anthony.velli says:

i don’t mind the man gettin paid, but the way he’s going about it with the rotoworld draft kit is upsetting. he betrays our trust by hiding it within his genuine opinions. if he wants to be a journalist then this type of crap will not get him any respect and makes him seem bush league. pretend you heard bob costas reporting on something and then digressing about how much he loves taco bell. also, if you’re gonna have two mets on your team…. castillo and church? i can think of two more valuable fantasy players on the royals.

    • Cerrone says:

When did I ever say I wanted to be a journalist?

    • m00kie says:

have you heard Keith Hernandez and his just for men schtick? He pulls that out all the time..it’s a product he uses and pushes, and gets paid for it…pushing products you don’t believe in seems like a problem though.

  11. cver says:

I thought Wallace Mathews article was pretty decent – for him – except for one apparent factual error:

Last time we checked, they had plumbing at Shea;)

  12. swedgin says:

Well, shoot, guys….I think we all log on everyday to get the latest, accurate info and links about our favorite baseball team….and um, that’s what we get.
I don’t know that we should become Bob Raissman. Metsblog has been superstrong this spring and I haven’t ever perceived Matt to be anything other than an ardent fan who loves putting together this blog and loves rooting for the Mets….and he did such a good job that the Mets have noticed and guardedly endorse his work.
Everybody kind of sounds like pinhead Dylan or Dave Matthews fans who attend the concerts, but sit down during those darned “electrified” songs.

  13. Slob says:

Even when Wallace Matthews attempts to make a valid point he comes off as an incompetent hack.

  14. Jaded1983 says:

I’ve got no problem with the small advertisements and plugs here and there. it allows matt to keep on doing what he’s doing, bringing us great and up to the minute mets information!!!

i for one have a pop up blocker, and have been coming here for months. i have the thing set not to alert me when it blocks something. for that reason, i didnt even know there was an SNY pop up until last week when i went here from a friends comp!!

    keep rockin out matt!

  15. CaseStreet says:

Humber. Good for him. What’s up with Mulvey? From the comments section, sounds like Gomez may be a starter. Would be nice if two of them made the team now.

Junkyard. Grew up in the area and have gone there many times to fix a window, etc. The area should be nicer but the city should find them an area like College Point where they can all move to. Especially considering Eminent Domain is allowed for public good, while it seems that here, the city will be giving the property to a few businesses.

Roto. Matt you endorse away and get yours. No harm done. I think readers know Matt is paid for endorsing Roto.
