According to the Daily News, Newsday, the
Star-Ledger, the Bergen Record, and the New York Times, Nationals C Paul Lo Duca still has an axe to grind with the Mets.
In the reports, Lo Duca insists he was never contacted by the Mets during this past off-season – and at no point did he demand a contract worth three years, as the Mets suggested, because contract talks never, ever began.
…the news here is, did the Mets use a bit of inaccurate, but effective spin to frame lo duca as greedy and unreasonable, so that when he was not retained, it would be an easier sell to a fan base who was clearly in his favor…or, has lo duca spun it as such, so that he can remain a sympathetic figure…
…at any rate, i liked lo duca, but it’s 2008…so, enjoy dc, paulie…eat at CityZen or Capital Grille, do well, but not that well, and now let’s all move on…

Who cares. Move on. But at the tiem, the media was reporting the demands, which were never refuted (best as I know). So I expect it is probably true that they at least floated the demand, even if they didn’t sit down with the Mets and asked for it point blank.
SO the Mets are maybe using it for him to save face? If he wants to be a dope, let Omar make a statement that they didn’t want him because he was breaking down, a Roid cheter, and he pretty much sucked last year. In other words, the truth!
At lest when the season starts, we might be able to focus more on the games, and get away from this type of nonsense.
oh I’m sorry…are we not talking about the fact that his name was plastered all over the Mitchell report, as some sort of steroid version of Timothy Leary?
I don’t know how Paul (or other players) can live in this vacuum. It’s one thing to be shamed and procede with your tail between your legs, not muttering a single word. But to actually stand up and criticize others as if there’s nothing else going on is embarassing. He should shut the hell up and get back to playing unjuiced mediocre baseball.
And I thought we the fans and media had already spun this that perhaps the Mets KNEW he was going to be exposed in the Mitchell report and cut their losses. I was a huge Loduca fan. I did not want to see him go. But the minute that report came out, I wanted nothing to do with the guy. He lost his credibility to be tough NY guy and say crap like this when he became a lousy cheater like the rest.
Remember this:
“Paul thinks you’re cute”
Yeah, the Mets spun it in their favor. But Paulie is such a chronic whiner with a perpetual chip on his shoulder, and he’s spinning things himself now with the contract situation.
His constant complaints — even now that he’s no longer a Met — are unseemly and unprofessional. I can’t see Piazza ever doing anything like that. He’s too classy. Apart from the fact that Paulie’s baseball skills had eroded, he was revealed to be a PEDS cheater and there was that big chip on his shoulder.
It’s too bad because he brought a lot of other things to the table — like a competitive nature, but his constant whining was grating and I’m sure that’s one reason they didn’t want him back.
It was the right move to pass on him, though if they had signed Posada, I would think differently. Another year of LoDuca would have been preferable than grossly overpaying Posada with a 4-year contract the way the Yankees did. The Mets dodged a bullet with that one.
Do they not have Capital Grille in NYC? I thought it was a chain.
Paulie was a solid Met, great in ‘06, but I’ve never seen an athlete whine to the NY media more than LoDuca. Enough Paulie.
I’m still wondering what Paul LoDuca did here that makes him think he deserved to be treated specially? He’s not exactly a franchise icon.
he looks like matt cerrone
Speaking for myself (and I assume some other Mets fans) when I say that this comment by Cerrone: “…a fan base who was clearly in his favor…” is a bit inaccurate. Personally, I was happy to see us cut ties with LoDuca.
I once was quite upset with the Mets not retaining Lo Duca. Since I found out that he is a cheater, as I’ve stated before, not only good riddance, but he should not be ever invited to functions that normally would be open to former Mets. I am curious, because I don’t remember him doing this – has he apologized to baseball for his actions?
I think he said something yesterday amidst all of the questioning he received from the media; however, I don’t think that he said anything prior to that.
yeah, he did apologize a little earlier. it wasn’t in the first couple of months as i recall but he did address the issue
I only wish him luck, the guy was a true professional, always battled for the team…with that said I’m happy he’s gone, he’s old, poor defensively and his offense is declining as well and he’s expensive. Schnieder and Castro are both better and younger and cheaper
why would the mets need to spin anything? nobody wanted that good for northing bum around for another year. i hope he chokes on a half-smoke at ben’s chili bowl.
OMG I’m so sick of people calling Paul LoDuca a great Met.
d. wright was quick to tell lastings to shut up and move on, so let’s see him do the same with lo duca. otherwise as much as i love tha kid, he’s a bit of a phony for only getting at lastings…if i’m not mistaken paulie has had much more to say than milledge has
Well, there is a difference. Lastings was running his mouth about how his teammates in NY didn’t treat him like a man. Paulie’s gripe isn’t withh ex-mates… it’s with the front office.
Paulie was a good Met…not a great Met, but a good Met. Fun guy to watch, but in the end, a cheat. Someone’s lying, and we can’t tell who, but since Paul’s a cheat it doesn’t matter to me. Good riddance.
