pmLinks: Catchers, Adjustments and Spring
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 19, 2008 1:43 pm

In a post to NYFS, the entire staff writes about who will be the team’s back-up catcher, should Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro be unable to start the season on time.

as i said earlier today, i hope schneider does not play today…give it one more day, and play tomorrow at home at night against the Orioles

…i seem to be the only person who is not worried about castro and schneider…i don’t know why, but i expect them both to be ready when the season starts…12 days from now…

In a report for the Port St. Lucie News, Eric Phaler writes about David Wright and his ability to adjust to the big leagues without skipping a beat.

Wright, on Jose Reyes being his teammate, as quoted by Phaler:

“Both of us have kind of come up together; we’ve learned from each other.  We’ve both made plenty of mistakes, but we try not to make them again.  But having a player the same age - you know, kind of the same expectations - playing next to you definitely helps out.”

At the Eddie Kranepool Society, Steve describes this portion of the exhibition season as The Dog Days of Spring.

The fantasy solution to the Delgado/Church problem was Xavier Nady. Now we need to find a guy who can basically play every position on the diamond.

I don’t get it.

If our bench is Easly, Pagan, Endy, Anderson, and Castro, what are we missing? The bench has 2 RH, 2 LH and 1 switch and can play C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, and RF defensively.

Isn’t that how a bench should be built?

We shouldn’t give up anything to make sure we have backups for our backups. If Endy or Pagan start and we make Clark or Saenz the 25th man on the roster, so be it.

Spring training is a very slow time for news and people get hung up on certain stories like “the mets don’t have a RH hitting 1B/OF to sub for Church and Delgado” - who cares? What team has an adequate replacement if their 1B or RF falls apart?

If the 25th man on the roster is the teams only concern, this is going to be a great year.

It still wouldnt hurt to get a Rivera or Huber on the cheap to save as replacments for old man Alou or Delgado.

Is Rivera better than Endy? Is Huber better than Olmedo Saenz? I don’t know. Might be, might not be. Why give up anything for just another question mark?

I’m not talking subsitute, i am talking replacements. Rivera has shown to be more productive than Endy in the past. As far as Huber, time will tell. They just both seem like take a chance type of canidates that Omar is known for acquiring, that we might be able to get on the cheap. No, i wouldnt give away any good looking prospects for them. But, there might be a package there somewhere we can all live with. Dave

I agree…but its still a concern. Its definitly a ‘What can they do?’ thing. They have 2 catchers on the roster, and some kids in the minors that can step in. I just REALLY dont wanna see Robinson Cancel more than I should have to. Delgado, there are a few moves that could be made either now or later on. The catcher situation just seems like a ‘lets cross our fingers’ situation.

Is it that much of a concern though? Schneider will be fine. He has been healthy historically. Castro is injury prone and we knew that going into the season. Any of the other catchers we have would be adequate as once a week starters during castro’s absence. I really can’t wait for these games to start for real so we can start worrying about actual baseball games instead of the price of hot dogs and the backup catcher in New Orleans.

In comparison to the 1st base situation, iffy LF situation, and possible 2nd base issue…no its not that big of a deal. But its definitly on the radar of issues that may be season long “problems”….to the extent that anytime you have a completely unproven, no name minor leaguer playing significant time at any postion its somewhat of an issue.

We better hope that castillo isn’t a possible issue. Slappy McSingleton as Matt calls him will be ready when the bell rings. He’ll put the ball in play, hit .280-.290 and play 140 games.

I don’t think LF is as big of a problem as other people do. Isn’t Endy Chavez still on the team? “yeah, but he bats left-handed” say people (looking right at you Mike and the Mad Dog). Has anyone ever looked at Mr. Chavez’s splits? For his career, he is a much better hitter against left handed pitching-
.290/.325/.381 vs. LH
.266/.307/.373 vs. RH

1B is simple, hope that Delgado doesn’t get any worse than he was last year. If he does, perhaps we can replace him with a guy like Sean Casey or someone like that. Lets face it, we are stuck with him for the first 3 months of the season regardless, so it’s best not to worry about it.

I’m with Matt on this one. I’m not worried about the catchers. I heard Schneider say last week on the radio that if the season would have started he’d be playing but he feels no need to push it because it would be high risk/little reward. Castro should take his time because I think he’s going to be more valuable than people think.

I dont worry about Schnieder, he should be fine. The way they are both catching pitchers in bullpens and simulated games it suggests well. However way Castro ran the other day I would be concerned that his could pull at any time.

I’m worried about Catro, but not Schneider. He’s been catching every day without any trouble. I think they’re holding him back to be cautious and to work with pitchers and coaches more. He’s not expected to be a big hitter, so why push it?

Castro, on the other hand, is a concern. He was down last season without too many innings or a collision or anything. A tight back is directly connected to a tight hamstring. It’s one continuous cord.

It’ll be important to bat Castro as alternate to Schneider against left-handed pitchers, especially while Alou is out.

This is not the time for Hot Stove ‘09… There are a number of players that will be available. Some of them we know now (Teixeira, Dunn) and others probably aren’t known at this time.

‘08 hasn’t even started yet, lets just enjoy the season. there will be plenty of time to wory about ‘09 after shea closes in November.

I am a NY Giants fan. the day after the superbowl a co-worker of mine who is an eagles fan was giving me a hard time because the giants have no chance to repeat. I was laughing at him so hard because it really dawned on me that since he is a 25 year old philly fan, he actually has no idea what it feels like when your team wins it all. The moral of the story is, just let it be. Mets in ‘08, worry about ‘09 in ‘09.

This we can all agree on. Its worse than talking in December, cause most of that is just TOTAL speculation(Who are we gonna get to play X?)….Now its the countdown to knowing what we have, just having no idea what kinda team they will be or how they will fare. Its the worst week or 2 of the year. I can taste it.

Forgetting about the fact that I get a nice wad of cash when they get here, Ill tell what else would be nice(broken record time), and Mackey I think, is with me on this.Just having my season tickets already! Why do they wait so long? It looks like We get them the week of the season? Dont get it. Print and send already. It just makes it officially baseball season for me when I open my night stand and see a phat book of what I’m gonna be doing all summer long….ahhhhh….cant wait…

Makes zero sense to me. I know we get ‘goodies’ with the packages and all, but who cares. Just send the tickets, and get me that other stuff later on…

BTW, Does this count towards taking care of the avg guy over the ‘big timers’? Just Kidding…

don’t start now…lol. If you order a seven pack, do you get any priority for post season games or 09 games? (obviously after the season tickets holders). What about ‘goodies’,does it come with that?
