Health: Gotay Returns, Church and BS Do Not
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 20, 2008 8:15 am

Ruben Gotay played last night for the first time since spraining his ankle roughly two weeks ago.

In one at-bat last night, Gotay struck out, but played three innings in the field.

as the saying goes, Lets GoTay…

Meanwhile, in the New York Post, Bart Hubbach explains how the frequent absence of Ryan Church and Brian Schneider is beginning to wear on them, plus it’s becoming a source of light-hearted humor for the rest of the team, according to David Lennon in Newsday.

Also in Newsday, Lennon talks quite extensively with Church, who is hitting just .171 this spring, and who struck out twice last night against the left-handed Mike O’Conner.

Lastly, in the Journal News, John Delcos writes, that despite the lack of playing time due to a hamstring injury, Schneider is catching on his with teammates.

i am not worried about schneider…he has remained at camp on travel days, and done a lot of work with the entire staff at one time, as opposed to traveling and working with just that day’s pitcher…which may actually be best in the long run.

Sign of being a Mets fan, I read the headline and just assumed that there was something wrong with Gotay’s back.

Somebody has to tell Church that the word patience doesn’t go over too well with the people from New York.

    • CaseStreet says:

In his defense, he did get a few solid swings. Unfortunately, the ball went straight to the outfielder.

    • MetsieFan84 says:

I’m sure he knew that as soon as he got traded. Now that the Mets are missing most of their power in the lineup and probably will never be the same, people will have unreal expectations for Church.

  3. Two-By-Four says:

With Alou out the Mets look quite venerable to left-handed pitching. I would expect to see them get a steady diet of left-handers from those teams that have decent left-handed pitching. If he is healthy (a huge if) I would love to see Castro get the lion’s share of catching when the Mets face left-handed pitching. His offense is sorely needed.

there are still 10 or so days left of Spring Training for church to get his stroke back..although Schneider has been MIA for the whole spring, he is still catching our pitchers during warmups, and bullpen sessions…not overly concerned about those two guys,…..yet

It amazes me that two professional newsmen hear the same simple one-line wisecrack from Billy Wagner about Brian Schneider, and at least one of them can’t even get the wording right:

Hubbach: “Why are you interviewing this guy again? He never plays!”

Lennon: “How many times are you going to interview this guy? He hasn’t played in 10 days.”

I know the spirit of the quotes are the same, but c’mon, it’s like a musician with a tin ear. Get the quote right — we don’t want your interpretation of what was said.

I see this all the time, and I can easily understand how a pro athlete might sometimes complain how his words are taken out of context.

    • dykstraw says:

quite possible that these were two different interviews and billy was independently busting balls during each of them.

that said, this milledge trade is really looking awesome. just saying.

      • gameball says:

Yeah, could be . . . but I do see different wording from different sources for the same quote all the time in the papers.

As for the Milledge trade, only time will tell.

      • thrilledge 4 prez says:

how the hell is it looking awesome…milledge is smoking the ball and these guys cant get on the field, and when they do, they cant hit a lick!!!!

Nice to see Gotay playing…especially since Matt had him dead and buried a few weeks ago…i think the line was “this may be the last we ever see Ruben Gotay”
