During last night’s win over the Indians, John Maine struck out seven batters through five innings, while allowing just
one run.
Maine, talking to reporters after last night’s game:
“They’re a good hitting team, they foul a lot of balls off, they made me work, and it’s great to face a team like that to get ready for the season…I’m ready to go, I’m bored of St. Lucie (laughing).”

For more on Maine, read Bart Hubbach in the New York Post.

I’m kind of bored with it too. Thankfully March Madness will tide me over a couple more weeks.
Is it just me, or does it seem that Maine has picked up a little bit of velocity on his fastball? He was consistently hitting 93 and occasionally 94 last night. That’s a few mph faster than last season.
OK….I Love John, and I know it was said in jest, with little to no thought behind it…..but can this team PLEAAASE stop using the word ‘bored’….just completely eliminate it from their lexicon.
Besides, he does realize we actually have to work all day, while he gets to lounge out and play baseball in Florida, right?. I know what he was getting at, and I know he was joking and he just wants the season to start already, but it just bothers me when professional athletes(and specifically the Mets) say they’re ‘bored’….I would kill to be so bored right now….
I agree with you to some extent, however, I disagree with you about the fact that he is just “lounging out and playing baseball in Florida.” While I don’t have any sympathy for men who get paid to play baseball while I sit in this law office slaving, I do respect the work ethic of some. John Maine does not make millions and millions of dollars and from what I have observed and heard, he works as hard as anyone. He is a professional and has done everything in his power to get better and better.
John Maine is one of the few guys who never looked bored as evidenced by his last start of the 2007 season.
He was joking, why make a mountain of a mole hill?
I know, I know…I agree. Its just when I see that word I’m reminded od Delcrapo’s “Sometimes we get bored.” Its unfair to Maine, but I just hate it…
Anyway, my buddy just told me about the coolest website ever. You can buy ‘futures’ for tickets to big sports games. Say you think the Mets will play the Yankees in the WS, you can take a ‘futures’ position for like $120/per ticket….really cool, and an incredibly well done website…check it out…
yoonew/com/market
I dont know how to post links on this site without having the post flagged. Just remove the ‘/’ and make it a ‘.’ in front of the com.
Kandiman, not making a mountain out of a mole hill. Just responding to a comment. You are the one trying to build mountains obviously. No big deal.
Thanks for the link…you are sneaky saltzy. That is a pretty cool idea…purchase options on baseball tickets. I love the business of baseball.
I think its honestly the coolest idea ever. They give an example on the site of right now you can ‘buy’ 2 seats to see the Giants in the SB next year for $200/seat. If they dont make it you lose $400, if they do yo have like $3,600. They are short selling the tickets though, so they BETTER be able to land the seats, or the whole market collapses, but what a badass idea huh? Its such a great website too, they really did it the right way….
saltzy, you’re posting on mets blog and surfing baseball ticket futures…not exactly working in a coal mine all day. i agree with your point generally when talking about guys showing up out of shape or taking a game off but not when it comes to maine, and especially not when its some innocuous comment made while laughing at the end of an interview. maybe you should go after Allen Iverson for not wanting to practice. As an added bonus I heard AI wears a 59/50 hat with a flat bill so it should be right in your wheelhouse. just kidding. gotta get back to filling out my pool brackets.
“Well that hurts my feelings”-Hillary Clinton
lmao “shame on you”
yeah saltzy, you really got it rough at work, soooo busy that you can post on metsblog about 200 times a day.
Damn, Im hated. Oh well. Doesn’t bother me.
I’m capable of doing this little thing called ‘mulit-tasking’. 50-55 mins of work an hour…..10 mins to write my oh so well received postings on this site…I promise I do just as much or more in a day than 90% of you guys….
Does anyone even realize I said ‘I know I’m overreacting, yadda yadda’., or do I just get slammed for my initial reaction after reading the post?
I’m starting to warm up to your posts actually
;)
you are sounding very wally matthews-ish…
agreed
im pretty excited about john maine this year. i like that hes under the radar w the media thanks to johan and pedro. im really looking forward to watching him work this year. he could definitely win 17 games this year if he stays focused and builds on last year.
I am upset i didnt grab maine in my fantasy draft the other night. I debated with him and liriano, and chose Liriano, only to watch Maine make it all the way back around, and get picked right ahead of my next pick.
*sigh*
you did right. Liriano is a stud.
i know… but i wanted maine as well.
Maine could easily and should have a better season than Liriano…Liriano has been struggling in spring training and will most lkely end up back on the DL soon…shoulda took Maine
Well, Johnny was the ONE guy who decided to show up to PSL a MONTH early because he “didn’t have anything else to do” back home. Poor decision-making, Johnny.
haha, good point! On SNY he talked about needed to work on his slider, being able to throw it in all counts… how appropriate of him to say that on TV and be honest with the reporters.
Sounds like he needs some more intesting hobbies. Or he needs to start living up the night life a little more…
well i mean “his” night life involves asking girls to wear their dresses…I think he is living it up just fine
I was going to suggest that as a hobby, but I took the high road for a change… so much for that.
isn’t he from the sticks in virginia or something? I mean, I know that PSL IS boring, but it’s not like he grew up in some big city or something.
What was nice about last night was that he didnt lose anything going into the 6th and hitting the 100 pitch mark. This is the only time of year when a pitch count really matters and the fact that he maintained velocity and command at that mark is huge. hes ready to go.
I’m still a little concerned by his tendancy to always hit the 100 pitch count in the 6th inning. Unless they are going to let him be Roy Halliday and throw 125-140 pitches I dont see him getting much over 200 IP. But we beat that horse dead in the game thread last night, so I’ll digress…
Thats Peterson though. Peterson has a tendency to have guys constantly work counts and go for strikeouts on every batter. He seems to shy away from just attacking the batter and forcing them to put it in play.
That’s like the opposite of what I have heard about Peterson. Look at what they are trying to do to Pelfrey.
yea, its more the nature of Maine and Perez to be strikeout pitchers, and not have a put away pitch in any other way but by strikeout.
It was the same story last year. Great start. in march and April. He had a bad 2nd half. Hopefully this year he throws like this for a whole season,
I agree, put up similar numbers for the beginning of last year. Last year was his first full season though, so hopefully he can maintain it all year long.
He will be a big key to this year. I think he could get 17-18 wins. I hope he does well, and he is a really likable player.
yes, he hit a wall in the second half last year. I would hope they dont over use him (and the other top 3) due to the lack of a 5th starter, but I expect him to be stronger later into the year.
I hope so to, I’m just pointing out that he strugggled down the stretch last year. He is really underrated though, by those who aren’t mets fans
Oh yeah I agree. He is definitely underrated, especially by opposing teams and fans. In MLB 2K8 he has a low rating even after having a good year last year. Go figure. I am kind of glad he is under the radar, hopefully he will turn a lot of heads of other teams and fans when he wins 18 games this year.
Excellent point Altru…I also do all my pre-season scouting based on MLB 2k ratings. I’m not kidding either…I take it seriously.
He is underrated because the scouts focus on his stuff and don’t see a 97MPH fastball and devastating changeup. Yet all he does is simply get people out and rack up a lot of K’s in the process.
Maine has stuff that is almost impossible to decipher when watching him pitch. He reminds me a bit of Mariano Rivera in that it looks like everything he throws is straight, but he has just a little cut, fade, and slide to everything he throws. I can rarely tell what pitch he’s just thrown when watching it live. That might have something to do with the preceived lack of stuff by outsiders.
His fast ball is very sneaky, it somehow rises or looks like it rises, gets the hitters to swing thats what counts. He’s not the first one in mets history to have that pitch, I believe N. Ryan also had it.
Gooden did it big time.
I saw him at his first ST season and I could not believe his movement going upward on his fast ball.
I think by bored he means he’s ready to start the season. This is a good thing. I doubt ElDuque can say he’s bored.
I always thought that the best pitcher was Johan followed by Padro and then John, now I wouldn’t be surprised if John is better than Padro. To Saltzy: true with your reputation, you again managed to find something bad to say on his comments. Teach me how you always manage to do that.
Hmm, you said “now I wouldn’t be surprised if John is better than Padro”.
How about it will take all season long to find out which of the fours is the best of the best???
And then again, who really knows about the the five guy. Maybe a Pelfrey one.
OMIGOD HE SAID BORED LETS KILL HIM! HOW DARE HE BE BORED!
Does your username indicate what type of a person you are?!? just kidding
Maine = 18 wins in 08, take it to the bank
I’m curious to see how teams attempt to match up with the Mets starters. If they throw thier best at Santana and Pedro then Maine could win 17+ If opponents try to match thier best against Perez and Maine they could be great and end up at 15-10 again. meanwhile Santana might win 27… :)
interesting thought. They will definitely try against Sanatana and Padro. But most of the time it’s whoever is in line to pitch, no matter who’s the opposing starter.
What odds would there be if the bet was that they will have 4 18 game winners.
Or 72 wins from the four.
You know the Spring is Winding down and baseball takes a backburner until opening day when even the papers only have 2 pages of articles for a team and there is a slew of comments because John Maine is bored and ready to start the season.
Xavier and Georgia tip off in 20 minutes then i can forget about spring training until monday
yes i agree. I hope maine can learn from last year and not have his pitch count at 90 by the 5th inning. I think he has great stuff and will be a really good pitcher. We are expecting alot from him. Remember he had hip issues and that was the reason for decline last year. This year he has no pain so hopefully that will translate into a monster season.
