I agree. I would like to move sosa but we need the depth and sosa did not do that bad as a long man/starter.

That doesn’t help though, since the Rockies could take him back an put him in the minors. They don’t have to make room on their 25-man to take him back, just pay the $25k.

The tough part is Register must be on the 25 man roster all year or CO can grab him back. If Mets do keep him they’ll need to deal someone else away for a chip that we can use elsewhere. With Omar meeting with Indians yesterday he may be working the phones for a decent deal. Good problem to have with everyone looking for bullpen help.

I would look to move Sosa, Schoeneweis, and maybe Gotay to get that one bench player. This opens up roster spots for Register and Rincon who can be just as effective a LOOGY as Schoe would be.

They would be downgrading the pen, but with Wise and Sanchez its not like Sosa would be getting those key spots anyway.

i dont see how trading sosa makes sense. starting pitching depth is something this team lacks, and i think sosa needs to be kept. If Duque shows he can not get healthy, and there is another injury or Pelfrey just stinks, sosa would become very important.

If anything, give Register the long-man role and let sosa stay sharp in AAA as a starter just in case he is needed. That wont happen but it would make some sense.

As much as anything, I think part of the reasoning in keeping Register on the opening day roster is that it will be easier to slip him to AAA sometime later when the Rockies already have their full roster determined. Doing it at the end of ST gives the Rockies a better chance to make room for him.

of note in last nights broadcast was Keith saying that Omar told him that the club is taking 5 starters with them on opening day. If it isnt Duque, then Pelfrey will be with the team, even if they only use four starters early in the year.

So that certainly helps figure out one of the last spots on the team.

Seems to me its basically down to Pagan or Clark, and Valentin or Gotay, and Dauner or Register.

With Rincon and Joe Smith in AAA I wouldnt mind moving Sosa and Schoeneweis along with Gotay for a player who can fill that ‘Nady like’ description.

Thinking Register actually does make it for Sanchez to start the yr……….they like this guy but have no room

I still think dealing Schoenweiss for another expensive backup option could happen……….their has to be a overpaid Righty bat that can play 1B/RF………….Scho makes about 3 million a yr for the next 2

Also Gotay is out of options so if they add a body they would likely have to move him…….Easley would then be the backup iF with Hernandez in AAA

With a guy like Register (like Joe Smith), it’s very hard to make a determination because every week can be a completely different story. He could start the season like Smith ’07/Sanchez ’06, force us to make a difficult decision, then turn into Mota ’07. Or, he could get off to a bad start, force us to cut him, then settle down and have a Heilman second half. Bullpens are baseball’s biggest headache, for GM, managers and analysts.
