The Mets defeated the visiting Nationals 8-2 this afternoon at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
- Pedro Martinez allowed two runs on five hits over five innings, striking out four and walking none. He allowed one home run, to Austin Kearns with the bases empty and one out in the fourth.
- David Wright had three hits, including his first home run, a no-doubt shot to left with two out in the fifth. That tied the game at 2. Wright could have had four hits, but was ruled to have reached base on an error in his last at-bat.
- Jose Reyes had two doubles, but was thrown out at third base twice: once on a steal attempt, once when he tried to stretch a double into a triple.
- Ricardo Rincon, Pedro Feliciano, Scott Schoeneweis and Matt Wise combined to allow just one hit and one walk in relief of Martinez.
- Carlos Beltran and Angel Pagan both added two hits.
- Carlos Delgado went 0-for-3, throwing his bat in frustration at one point. He’s batting .179.
- Ryan Church showed off his arm from right field by throwing out Ryan Zimmerman, who was trying to stretch a single, at second base.
Paul Lo Duca went 1-for-3. His hit came off Martinez in the first inning on a grounder into the hole that Reyes couldn’t come up with cleanly.

The Box Score on mlb.com for this games recap has Feliciano pitching one inning. There’s an ” H” next to his name. What does that stand for?
HOLD
thanks
An explanation of holds is at http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/1999/0908/46410.html
was Paulie tested before the game????
Also says Pedro pitched 5.
He did pitch 5
With the way they have looked against lefties all Spring, Delgado and Church officially have me concerned. They have looked poor in general, but nearly clueless against the southpaws.
Beltran is just not going to see good pitches this year. Why should a lefty even pitch to him, when there are 2 human automatic DP’s hitting after him?
I hear you. I see Church as having issues right now in general righty or lefty pitching. I expect he will get better as he starts to find his sleep pattern again. Concussions followed by 2 am feedings with a baby can be tough Id assume. Delgado will be able to cut down some Ks by hitting into the shift and topping balls so they are slow grouders to the infielders. So we have that to look forward to.
He has fallen so fast I think he set a new land speed record along the way
hard to believe people are putting this much stock in ST abs. I mean, I see the concern of lefty matchups in general, but to project the season based on ST is overreacting, don’t you think?
Carlos Delgado went 0-for-3, throwing his bat in frustration at one point.
Apparently Delgado doesn’t share your point of view.
lol…ok, I bet he’s giving up on himself for the season, too.
That bat throw was pretty funny. It was almost Delmon Youngesque.
lol, No one said he was giving up on the season so please don’t put words in my mouth. But obviously he is concerned enough to be frustrated at what should be “it’s only ST.” But, perhaps he’s just practicing twirling a bat for future half time participation in the coming College Football season. :)
Right, it was a joke, as I thought you were joking; wasn’t putting words in anyone’s mouth, that’s what the above two posts implied: that he’s done…and I thought you were surely making fun of that. But obviously if I have to explain it, it’s not funny. So I’ll quit while I’m behind.
I’m sorry if I was a little caustic there but around these parts it’s hard to tell if someone is joking or not (even with lol or :) ). Actually when he flipped the bat I was thinking how we could have used him in the 2000 Series with “Roids” Clemens on the mound.
One thing to remember is that Church has been a slow starter - his worst month on his career splits is April.
Delgado had sucky spring training stats in ‘03 and ‘05, but went on to put up great numbers in the regular season both times.
What concerns me about Delgado is a loss of bat speed due to age or lack of conditioning due to injuries forcing him to commit himself earlier to catch-up with the fastball thereby making him vulnerable to off-speed stuff or forcing him to become more of a “guess” hitter.
I missed the end of the game and David’s homer but I am glad they came back.
BTW, where is Matt Cerrone? I am just curious because Evan Drellich has had all of the posts today
Prolly arguing Joba vs. Big Pelf with his wife
Sometimes Matt needs to go to the pen.
Can’t win a World Series without good relief pitching, right?
We will have a dominant pitching staff…I mean completely dominant. I actually think it is possible to have an entire starting staff (with Duque as the 5) with era’s under 3.5 and possible to have 3 of them (Santana, Pedro and Maine) under 3.
We will also have a very solid pen.
This is the best rotation and overall pitching staff we have had since 1986 bar none. Darling, Doc, Sid, Bobby Ojeda and Rick Aguilera plus Mcdowell and orosco in the pen 3 starters had under a 3 era and the other 2 had under a 4.
These guys will pitch and keep all the games within reach.
Wright Reyes Castillo and Beltran are all still very good and offensively productive. The bench can also hit a ton for a bench in Easly, Castro and Marlon Anderson plus Gotay and Chavez are both productive from the bench.
It comes down to how much time will Alou miss (since he can still flat out hit when healthy) and how bad will Church and Delgado and Schneider actually be.
If all 3 gives us their production from last year…we are going to win a ton of games and lock up this division in early Sept.
If all 3 are god awful…we will struggle to make the playoffs.
Look for a deal midseason for either next years first basemen or a potential stud for the outfield as reinforcement.
I can see Willie and Omar shutting down Delgado if we acquire a big hitting 1b guy near the trading deadline. There is too much at stake here for both guys for them to go down with the ship with Delgado.
Fmart is not coming this year to help the team. He starts next season along with Pelfrey and possibly Neise depending on how he does this year
I agree with most of this. I think we may well see Fmart. As for mid year trades, I’m verrrrrry curious to see the moves.
To me the interesting aspect of the year will be Pelfrey’s development or lack thereof. They need him in 2009 to be part of the rotation. But if he is scuffling in AAA, they will have to prepare moves with the expectation needing help next year at 1b and starting pitching. I see Fmart locking down a corner of position next year regardless.
Depending on how well Church and Pelfrey do….I can see both being dealt along with O Perez to get back some youthful pitching help and a right fielder of the future to go with Fmart in left and an offseason need to get a 1b
I can see, pending all starters being healthy and doing well, Perez being moved for a bat with a similar contract status.
Don’t need 4 starters in the playoffs. Santana, Pedro and Maine, then pray for rain?…nah..that sucks.
Move Perez for an outfielder on his walk year.
Did anyone see Paul Lo Duca right before his first at-bat and the smile he made aiming toward either Pedro Martinez or Jose Reyes? That was funny. What was even more funny was Gary Cohen trying to determine who he pointed to.
I think Reed Johnson would be a grrreat pickup……….we would love him as a extra OF
he can platoon with Chavez to start the yr in LF for Alou and play for Church vs Lefties in RF
Easley would then become the main backup everything in the IF…….1B for Delgado………..Gotay would have to go with taht though and Anderson may have to play more IF in a pinch
but Mets fans would love Johnsons D and hustle
For $180, it would be nice if the MLB Extra Innings package actually showed ST Games. Maybe that will be an option next year for an additional $100.
How about all the games in HD
Lazy SNY never travels to away spring training games.
OR has made closed captioning available
Oh, well. I’ve only e-mailed them a trillion times but it goes in and out of their head.
Did anyone see the Jose commercial where the guy with the bat smashes his boombox, which was playing a Jose chant? Jose then started laughing.
I loved that but I want to find it online and I haven’t yet. Could anyone me know when they find it?
Thanks!
i know, i loved that commercial and ive been looking for it online for a while. who would have thought in this day and age it would be so hard to find
you must not have looked hard enough took me two seconds

Rincon was impressive today…
Also, off-topic, Interesting article on ESPN.com re: young players who’ve impressed this spring. Looks like Cincy’s got some pretty good arms coming along…
I feel bad for the young Cinci pitchers. One year with Dusty ” Never met a pitcher I couldn’t blow out his arm” Baker and they will be done.
I just read that the Nats released John Patterson. If he’s interested, he’d be a decent candidate for a minor league contract. I know that he’s been injured the last couple of years, but… Then again, this *is* the Nats releasing a starting pitcher.
i totally agree, if he’d take it…he was filthy when healthy
Cant hurt to sign him for depth. He was their opening day #1 SP a year ago.
Does anyone know if the regular season games will be transmitted in full HD on SNY? The YES channel transmitts in full HD. Looks awesome.
