OP had a rough outing but he’s looked good in the last two. He’s still one of the better #4 starters in the league and has no-hitter stuff when he’s really on. He needs to learn how to stop the bleeding once it starts and not let his emotions run away with him.
Apparently, he kept telling Indians’ hitters, “Ok, I dare you to hit this one over the fence.”
Perez will have these outings every two starts or so..It’s what he does…
Which is why I’m surprised that he and Boras are electing to wait for free agency. OP is such a wild card you really can’t put your stake on him to come through. If he does great but don’t bet the farm on it.
I know..I think Boras is harping on the fact that he is on a really good team and is the fourth starter…which in turn should lead to another great year from Perez…Obviously, we all hope Boras is right because then there would be no better #4 starter in the game…
But lets be honest..Boras has not been doing such a great job with his free agents the last few years in terms of what he thinks they should get…Jones, Lohse…have to wait and see
Personally, I see 11-14 wins from Perez…of course I’ll take the latter..but he should give us an adequate year
That sounds about right, based on last year. But don’t we want him to improve from that and now continue to be inconsistent?
At the end of the year, we just never knew which OP we’d see. I want to see some improvement from him in that category.
The reason OP will wait for free agency is because he is young, left-handed and has great stuff. That alone will make him very rich next year, no matter if he is inconsistent or not. And the Mets will not be willing to give him an outrageous amount of money bc they know he can not be depended on day in and day out.
He will not be a Met next year. So lets just hope he gives us a great 2008!
Agreed. and if Pelf gets his act together, he could step into the #4 role, which would open up #5 spot for Niese/Parnell/Bostick or a FA.
Of course, this means Pedro would sign up for 2009.
i think you all are losing sight of the best thing to come out of today…
Delgado got a hit!
And Church. That’s exactly what I was thinking.
Nice to see Beltran send one far away
Perez?
Hope everyone who celebrates enjoys their Easter holiday!
I’ll see ya all back in my native Queens on April 13. I’ll be sporting my orange hard hat; please say hello!
LET’S GO METS !!!!
First, Happy Easter, Mets Fans!
Second, I think there’s a little resentment toward Perez for the one-yr deal he got. Seemed a little over the top to me, too.
I don’t know what kind of attitude he has towards Mets, fans, etc., but I’m hoping he a real team person who brings a very positive attitude and intensity to the clubhouse.
Whether he goes or stays in 09 obviously depends on his ability to pitch at a level that makes at least for a good season. This has got to be the year that he shows us whether or not he has a future as a Met. I think if it’s a good season, we’ll likely see him back, and if he’s proves good but crassly greedy, then it’s definitely good bye and good riddance.
I am really looking to see who has the winning attitude and the team mentality on this ballclub in ‘08. Those factors will help us win crucial games in difficult times.
Let’s Go Mets!
According to the radio broadcast, they thought he was only throwing in upper 80s or so (no radar gun, and nothing posted on the scoreboard). It could be a dead arm period for him.
What I’ve been happy about (with him and the whole staff) is that they have not been walking people.
That’s key with him. And, not getting behind in the counts. If he’s pounding the strike zone, the we’re usually in good shape.
The idiot Indians announcers on XM also were saying he never throws very hard and relies on offspeed stuff mostly, so they didn’t have a clue………..
I hope OP does well too. But I’m familiar with him from his years in the ‘Burgh. He’s not all there mentally on the mound at times. That combined with an inconsistent ability to locate the ball, aka meatballs over the middle, results in this guy being a 12-16 GW on a good team and a 6-10 GW on a bad team.
He’s a lefty, with velocity and he’ll have a decent record this year. He’ll go to some other team as a FA and get paid loads.
If it’s a good team looking for a 3-4 starter, he’ll do fine. If he signs with a team looking for a 1-2 starter, the local broadsheets will be screaming about paying huge $’s to an inconsistent starter. See Pittsburgh papers from 2006.
In all seriousness I would be shocked if OP gets 15 wins again this year. He pitched real well last year, but his career has been one of inconsistency. I believe in Rick Peterson more than any other pitching coach, and if OP wins another 15 I would chalk it all up to Peterson. I too believe that this is OP’s last year with the Mets. Even if he has a mediocre year this year he will be asking for too much money. If he is smart though he would stay with Peterson because he won’t be as good with any other pitching coach.
can’t take anything related to pittsburgh baseball seriously. their track record is enough to show that they have no idea what they are doing. case in point: oliver perez.
he seems more worried about his beard lookin good then his slider looking good
that’s ice dude…..
i just googled matt cerrone….hehe lots of stuff
Any team would be crazy to take Oliver Perez without Rick Peterson. But I also see no reason why OP could not continue to improve on his game, he is young and learning from the best. I’m saying OP gets to 15 again this year and that he will be great in the big spot, especially since he is in the 4th spot. I’m saying 16 wins because these starters will push each other.
Actually, I’m going waaay out here . . . He’ll win 18 this year. Why? If you don’t think Bora$ isn’t going to be in touch with him at least once a week, telling him to listen to The Jacket because that’s how he’s going to be able to get the mega-contract next year, then I’ve got some waterfront real estate to sell you in the Mojave Desert. The fact that he’s in the #4 slot means that he’ll be pitching against lesser opposition pitchers, so he’ll get a couple of wins off of that. Plus, he’ll have Pedro and Johan there for the full year, grabbing his ear and helping him here and there. It’ll all add up.
completely unreated to this strory, but…
…is there anyway we can get Mets.com to take down the 2007 NL East standings?
Jays cut Reed Johnson. . . . Wasn’t there some chatter about the Mets taking a look at him?
They should grab him if they can…he’d be a nice RH platoon w/Church / fill in for Alou / insurance for Beltran, without costing them a player.
he could cost them a player if they lose someone else from the roster. Unless he replaces someone that can go to AAA. But, with back issues, is h really likely to be better than Pagan?
Reed Johnson had a very good year in 2006. Batted .319! Close to 90 runs score as well. He is a leadoff type hitter so he doesnt have the pop we need but even still I wouldnt mind having him. He is an Endy Chavez type though which we have. Great defense as well.
Mets really owe it to themselves to look at reed johnson…at the very min. just sign him to a deal and have him duke it out with pagan for an OF spot…the fact that he hit .320 with good defense and speed. He can add another element to the offense…
have him, beltran, and endy in the OF after the 8th inning and our defense is pretty set..
I like Pagan but his defense scares me…
oliver perez errrrr where do i start…… point blank and period this guys inconsistency’s is what drops him from a GRAD A- pitcher to a C+ overall pitcher .. its sad to .. so much talent and it only shows not even half maybe a quarter of the time he performs …tisk tisk…
i know that this comment dosnt belong here but the blue jays cut reed johnson today as shannon stewart won the starting job…my question is…does anyone think that the mets will make a play at johnson…hes a lifetime .280 righty hitter that plays all 3 OF positions and would be more than valuable off of the bench, he would also come at a cheap price
