amLinks: SNY, Facial Hair and Bullpens
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 24, 2008 7:46 am

Mets Weekly returned for its third season this past Saturday, and Mets Grrl was not impressed.

Speaking on SNY, the Brooklyn Met Fan begs the network to abandon any future efforts to take live phone calls from fans during the broadcast – as they did over the weekend.

when i heard that SNY would be doing this, i was excited and nervous, for much of the reasons that BMF is being critical…that said, i think the network has earned the right to give it a few more chances, so they can work out the kinks to try and get it right, because it’s an intriguing and unique idea if done right…

At Pick Me Up Some Mets, Zoe provides a team grooming report.

In a post to Mets Today, Joe points out a weekend comment by Gary Cohen about Jose Reyes when up 2-0 in the count.

Lastly, at Mets Refugees, Jason E continues his explanation of what it takes to build a bullpen.

…here’s my explanation: numbers and luck…then roll the dice

The Mets Today link looks like it’s about being up 2-0 in the count, not down 0-2…

“In 2007, Barry Bonds led the NL in 2-0 counts with 146. Albert Pujols was second. In sixth place, surprisingly enough, was Jose Reyes — a testament to his increased patience and improved strike zone judgment.”

I have to agree with BMF about the phone call segment during the game. While I respect SNY for trying to do something different, it’s just doesn’t work while a game is going on. Just broadcast a baseball game, don’t make things too complicated SNY. It was just way too distracting and as noted by BMF Gary and Ron looked lost and disinterested. If anything take some email questions from fans during the game or something like that. It’s a lot easier, has no chance of technical problems and plays much better for TV.

I agree completely. Even if they fix the technical issues, I can’t stand the gimmicky call-in segment. The email questions would be better, but I’d be for removing it entirely.

Also, while I think Gary Cohen is a top notch play-by-play guy and the entire broadcast team is great to listen to–I’d like to see two changes:

Eliminate a lot of the corny, jokey chatter. Some broadcasters can pull it off, and Keith is probably the best at it, but usually the jokes are pretty flat and awkward.

While I don’t think the broadcast team are complete homers, they often come across as soft on the players. I’d like them to tell it like it is.
