According to David O’Brien, at his blog for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Braves RHP John Smoltz will likely begin the season on the disabled list due to soreness in his shoulder.

However, Smoltz will likely return in time to pitch against the Mets and Johan Santana in Atlanta on April 6.

Going to this game, Definitely looking forward to watching Smoltz tear his shoulder to shreads

I live in Atlanta and have tickets to all three games, can’t wait! But isn’t Santana pitching on Sunday contingent on the Mets having a five man rotation set? I was reading earlier that we may go with a four man rotation until the Brewers series?

If the later is the case, then Santana will pitch on Saturday, yea?

That’s what I was thinking… Can’t wait to bust out them Jose chants (obviously in good taste, when something actually worthwhile happens), and maybe a lil’ Johan yelp here and there!

whats a Johan yelp?

FBones24 March 24, 2008 at 2:59 pm

A Johan yelp is the sound batters make when they realize that they have started to swing too soon and it’s not a fastball.

pastry puff move for Atlanta to carry an extra roster player for six days

I am not one to be glad anyone is injured but I am hoping that Smotlz isn’t 100% and the Mets knock him around. Although I don’t mind a classic pitching matchup either, I’d be happy either way as long as the Mets win it.

Hey, hey… Karma is a you know what…

End of the line for Smoltz and possibly Glavine?

I respect these guys a lot, more for Smoltz after Glavine’s suckfest last year and comments after, but it would be nice to see two pitchers Atlanta is leaning on seemingly fade together considering that they came up together.

We have concerns about our #5 but the Bravos have to sit their #2, I’ll take that trade every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Hampton has more injury question marks than Pedro and Alou combined and hopefully we have enough of a book on Glavine.

On average we shouldn’t be overmatched by their pitching throughout any 3 game series, even if it’s our 3-4-5 versus their 1-2-3.

I want a couple of series sweeps and domination of the season series this year. Getting baffled by the back-end of their rotation last year was downright frustrating.

Boy that seems like wishful thinking to me. I hope you’re right, but Smoltz is a heck of a pitcher, old or not. Glavine could easily give our team fits. I don’t have a lot of faith in Hampton after all those years of injuries, but Hudson is a stud.

I would be careful about saying that we won’t be over matched by their pitching.

hope he’s back soon.

Isn’t there a minimum of 15 days on the DL?

mrmet it is March 24, 2008 at 3:01 pm

yeah but hes retroactive from his last start in spring training.

Braves pitching staff looks real good on paper but you ahve to wonder if these guys are all over the hill and injured. eg. Hampton, Glavine. Hopefully they are done.

gomets6091 March 24, 2008 at 3:47 pm

I’m assuming Hudson is gonna be their opening day starter, but is that a definite? Is there any chance Glavine will be the opening day starter, b/c I’m most likely going to that game (in DC against the Nats), and I would LOVE to be the amongst the first Met fans to get to boo Glavine this season.

On a slightly related note: I work on Capitol Hill and my office just got a tour of the Nats new ballpark….it is really nice. Definitely looks like it’s gonna be a bit of a hitter’s park, so if you’re in fantasy leagues that haven’t drafted yet, look into guys like Zimmerman, whose numbers I expect to skyrocket. Being there today makes me SO excited for next season. New ballparks are the best.

According to Dave O’Brien’s blog at the AJC, Glavine will start the home opener:

“Bobby Cox confirmed this morning that Tom Glavine would slip into the home-opener start March 31 if sore-shouldered John Smoltz is on the DL, which seems like a certainty at this point.”

Number41 March 24, 2008 at 4:20 pm

wonder if he can get thru the first inning now that he’s got that tommyhawk back on his chest….

Fregosi March 24, 2008 at 4:43 pm

The Braves pitching is just OLD. I can’t see them any better than .500 this season.
