Opinion: The Bullpen and Bench

by Matthew Cerrone on March 24th, 2008 at 8:19 am

On Saturday, Duaner Sanchez threw a bullpen session, then pitched an inning during a minor-league game on Sunday.

Over the weekend, Omar Minaya told reporters that the team is not willing to push Sanchez, instead, like with all players, they will be ‘conservative.’

fair enoughas expected, it’s looking more and more likely that sanchez will stay back in St. Lucie in extended spring-training when the team breaks camp for Opening Day…

as i have been saying for weeks, this is probably the best course of action, a) because it allows duaner more time to get healthy, but b) lets the team keep Steven Register, who they can continue to evaluate through much of April, while duaner keeps working his way back

As such, the Mets opening day bullpen is shaping up to be: Register, Pedro Feliciano, Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis, Jorge Sosa, Matt Wise and Billy Wagner.

for what it’s worth, there is reason to believe that the team will break camp with it’s full five-man rotation, despite not needing a fifth starter during the first week or so of camp…therefore, i’m anticipating seven relievers, five starters, eight position players and five men on the bench made up of Ramon Castro, Damion Easley, Marlon Anderson, Endy Chavez and Angel Pagan, with Ruben Gotay hopefully still back in St. Lucie…

For more on Register, read Adam Rubin’s outstanding post at his blog for the Daily News, where he tells you everything you need to know about Rule-V reliever.

right, with pagan slated to start in the field, making him part of the positional eight, in place of Moises Alou, that leaves one spot open on the bench, which i have to think will be either gotay or Brady Clark

Health: Schneider, Valentin, Gotay, Etc.

by Matthew Cerrone on March 24th, 2008 at 8:02 am

Brian Schneider was hitless in two at bats on Saturday against the Indians.

…the news here is not that he was hitless, it’s that he started in a game for the first time since March 10…welcome back, brian…

from what i can gather, the team is fairly confident that schneider will be more than ready for opening day…which is what i anticipated all along…

In an effort to avoid retirement, Jose Valentin will get a cortisone shot today to help relieve the pain in his neck.

During yesterday’s game, Ruben Gotay was 0 for 1, and made an error in the field.

the Mets like gotay’s bat, but continue to be concerned about his fielding, as they should be…the problem is that he’s out of options, but also not 100 percent healthy…

…hopefully, the Mets can find a creative way to keep gotay back at camp for opening day without exposing him to waivers…

Lastly, over the weekend, Moises Alou, Jason Vargas and Ambiorix Burgos were placed on the 15–day disabled list retroactive to March 21.

amLinks: SNY, Facial Hair and Bullpens

by Matthew Cerrone on March 24th, 2008 at 7:46 am

Mets Weekly returned for its third season this past Saturday, and Mets Grrl was not impressed.

Speaking on SNY, the Brooklyn Met Fan begs the network to abandon any future efforts to take live phone calls from fans during the broadcast – as they did over the weekend.

when i heard that SNY would be doing this, i was excited and nervous, for much of the reasons that BMF is being critical…that said, i think the network has earned the right to give it a few more chances, so they can work out the kinks to try and get it right, because it’s an intriguing and unique idea if done right…
