News: Brewers Release Claudio Vargas
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 25, 2008 3:28 pm

The Brewers have released RHP Claudio Vargas, according to Tom Haudricourt at his blog for the Journal Sentinel.

Vargas has already cleared waivers, reports Haudricourt, who believes the Brewers may save money on Vargas’s contract be releasing him today.

Vargas, 29, was 11-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 29 games for the Brewers last season, during which he started 23 games.

His ERA has gone up in each of his last three seasons.

…the Brewers fans are freaking out in the comment’s section of haudricourt’s post…they understand moving him, but they cannot understand why he was simply released and not traded…my answer would be: because no team wanted to trade for him, otherwise i am sure he would have been traded…this would suggest vargas may not have as much value as people think

i am certain a slew of Mets fans will announce that vargas will make for a better fifth starter than what the Mets have…i’m not sure he will…he might…but i don’t know that he will…again, he may be better than Nelson Figeuroa, he might not…who knows…he’s far from a sure thing, which will likely be the case with any potential number five starter, including Mike Pelfrey or Orlando Hernandezlike with the rest of these players we keep reading about, i’d welcome vargas to the Mets assuming he is not guarenteed a roster spot…otherwise, i’d pass

ok so basically this guy is better than what we had at the 5th spot last year and if he does exactly the same thing this year would probably be better than whatever option we have currently at 5

  2. NoPepperGames says:

I don’t think a 5+ ERA will work out too well on this team.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

tell that to 15 game winner steve trachsel

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Although his ERA was high, defense makes a lot of difference. Vargas could benefit highly from a better defense like that of the Mets, which would bring the hits down, and Shea could knock off some of those homers. If he were a Mets starter, I’d predict that his ERA would head to the low 4s.

While Pelfrey is perfectly fine, I don’t think it’s a horrible idea to send him down to AAA to make sure he doesn’t tip his pitches and give Claudio a shot.

  3. wease1013 says:

Yes i think he would be a good fit as our #5 no reason not to get him in my opinion. It seems like pelfrey just doest have what it takes, i hope i eat those words

  4. davey_and_themets says:

i’ go for it, gives us some depth..maybe he will have a dip in era at shea

  5. Jayperez says:

id say if he doesnt cost too much yea sure lets pick him up. We could definatly use the depth. Hopefully rick can fix em up and lower that era a bit and that would be acceptable for our #5 starter.

  6. sincekindergarten says:

I’d be up for it, too. Only for the starter depth. Thing is, El Deadguy will pitch better his next start in ST.

    • Jayperez says:

I hope sooooo he by default is getting that job until he goes on the DL. We need another season like last season from him when at one point he was our best pitcher. I dont know if the new delivery will do the trick though, but YA GOTTA BELIEVE right!?

      • sincekindergarten says:

I think he’ll hit 86-87 mph next start, myself. If he’s got command of that slurve, watch out. We could have five gems (the SPs) to start the season with.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

          Was that a joke?
          I hope it was.

Hernandez would be the biggest waste of a rotation spot I’ve ever seen. I thought he was above average last year, but COME ON!!! El Duque is terrible!!

        • metsftw says:

115 ERA+ and a 1.17 WHIP are very much above average. of course, he only gave up 109 hits in 150 IP, so luck was certainly on his side last year.

        • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Well yes, this is what I meant commenting about last year, but he’s ANOTHER year older, suffered from a MAJOR injury, just changed his ENTIRE delivery and lost quite a few on his fastball. It doesn’t add up any more.

Hernandez and Delgado are lost causes. The Mets should just move on from them ASAP.

  7. sylvan says:

If he’ll take a minor league assignment? Absolutely. If not, he’s of little use to us unless we’re sure that El Duque is well and truly toast. A reasonably healthy El Duque can be a top-notch major league pitcher, and Claudio Vargas….can’t.

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I wouldn’t say that. Considering how much defense and park dimensions matter, if something goes right for Vargas he could be a top of the rotation starter. He has just as much potential as Maine or Perez and he didn’t exactly get a break last year pitching in Milwaukee. With Shea being a pitchers’ park and a the Mets having a solid defense, Vargas could do fine here. He was very good for the first for months of the 2007 season as well.

  8. vitto79 says:

Omar is the type to fine tune the roster

Sooo Matt Murton would be nice…………for Gotay makes sense………oh and if Gotay is on waivers why is he playing today?????

Al Reyes is not a bad options as the 5th starter either

Duque hits the DL and Pelfrey hits AAA and more importantly it gives depth to the pitching which is what they need in the minors

    • kandiman says:

I am assuming you mean Anthony Reyes from STL. And no he is not a good option, the guy may be the worst starter in the NL. either him or Rick Van Den Hurk.

The guy went 2-14 with a 6+ era. I think he started out 0-12 too. We would be better off having Fred Wilpon start every 5th day

  9. Gland says:

Can anyone point me to an article that says Gotay was put on waivers? Both of the links that were posted only referred to Register.

  10. zen says:

any signing that doesn’t involve trading kids from the system is fine.

  11. vitto79 says:

Yea Gotay sure looks like he is on the team to me……..he is playing 2B right now……………..I am fine with him on the team too……………..but if they can get Murton I am good with that too

  12. oleosmirf says:

if Vargas wants to go to AAA and wants to earn a spot on the team thats great but i’m sure someone will give him a shot right away

  13. CitizenSnips says:

Vargas was on the Expos/Nationals at one point. Minaya’s gonna probably pick this guy up.

    • Metsie says:

      Ding. Ding. DIng.

You hit it right on the head.
      He’s and former Expo/National and he’s Latino.

2 for the price of 1…right in Omar’s wheelhouse. If Vargas was over 35, he’d be the ultimate Minaya pickup.

  14. dykstraw says:

i think peterson could fix vargas right up. i like him. pelfrey needs more seasoning and duque looks shot as a starter.

what are the preseason waiver priority rules?

    • dykstraw says:

      nevermind, says he CLEARED waivers.

i don’t see how you don’t roll the dice on a guy like this.

  15. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i really think getting matt murton would be a fantastic move, though i dont see how he would ONLY cost gotay. i know alot of people like gotay but really what value does the guy have? hell if we could trade for matt murton using gotay and possibly a very low single a prospect id be thrilled i just dont see how gotay pulls that much weight in a deal.

  16. CaseStreet says:

    Pass.

  17. dave27 says:

How many awful pitchers named Vargas are we looking to get?

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Not awful, but pretty good for 2/3 of the season and just had a horrible month.

The Mets defense drops a whole lot of those ERA points for Vargas. He could be this year’s Jorge Sosa.

  18. likeitoughttabe29 says:

Any depth at pitching is a good thing. especially if all it costs us is a minor league deal.

However, I am not done with El Duque just yet. People are making too much of the speed of his pitches, duque has never thrown the ball that hard. Maybe revving it up to mid 80’s sometimes but his average fastball is always in the low 80’s. Especially on the two seamer.

If he finds the location and break on his off speed stuff then he is gonna be fine.

I even read someone who was complaining that ankiel hit that bomb off a 60 mph curve ball SO WHAT, the speed of a curve, especially in the majors, means nothing, its break and location. a curve ball can be in the 80’s in the majors if its fat its going to be hit. The man throws an Ephus pitch for Gods sake, yet now people are sayign he is done because he doesnt throw hard.

    • oleosmirf says:

he’s done b/c he can’t stay healthy and he has to change his wind up. He was able to hide the ball so well which was one of the main reasons why he was so succesful in the first place.

When he was at his best he was unhittable but IMHO those days are over

      • likeitoughttabe29 says:

He Pitched a nasty game for me in 2K8 Last night so i think he’s still got something left.

  19. Bench5urvivor says:

another vargas on a minor league deal… worth a shot
i always thought he was better than the one already on the roster with a bad hip

is anthony reyes really available??? was a huge pitching prospect just over 2 years ago

    • CitizenSnips says:

Have you even looked at his stats?

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Yes. His 4.48 EqERA wasn’t bad last year, and it should improve with a better park and defense. His 8.6 VORP wasn’t horrible either. He allowed a lot of hits with a low GB%, so I’m assuming that his field wasn’t good.

As for Reyes, his numbers were mainly caused by crappy management skills and HORRIBLE luck, and you’d notice that if you look closely. PECOTA projects a 13.3 VORP and a 4.69 EqERA. In your language, they project a .277 BABIP, a 4.32 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.

  20. easymethod says:

Honestly, who wants this clown Vargas in Flushing?

Granted we have had some shakeyness in Hernandez and Pelfrey, but give me a break.

On top of it, whats with Jorge Sosa getting no love? The guy stepped in last year and was a solid #5 for a few months. Admittedly, there were times he was dissapointing after coming out of the bulpen. But that is par for the course for the bullpen last year.

    Sosa is my #5

  21. CleonJones says:

I’ll take Claudio Vargas or the rumored Anthony Reyes any day for our 5th spot in the rotation, because both are fairly young pitchers, and both have upside that Rick Peterson can work with and make them better.

Heck, John Maine was a “throw-in” in the Benson trade with Baltimore, now look at how he is pitching under the guidance of Perterson. Either Vargas or Reyes would be fine here, I think. Reyes is especially intriguing despite his awful 2007 because he used to dominate in Double & Triple A. And if I recall correctly, he’s only 27 (maybe less), so he’d be great insurance for the team if Perez decides to leave via free agency.

Besides, I’d rather have Vargas or Reyes than Tony Armas, who can never manage to stay healthy.

    • Kalihan42 says:

Dito. You ca’t go wrong wioth another pitcher in the mix if he is healthy. Will he accept a minor league contract?

If not that should create some pause unless we plan to release El Duque. I think we are going to have plenty of injuries to give Pelfrey another shot later in the season but I would like to see what type of numbers Vargas or Reyes can give in Shea as a pitchers park. I think of Trachsel as a player who vitalized his career by moving to Shea and becoming one of the most steady 5th starters in the league for a couple of years.

  22. viktor06 says:

    “Mota is better than Wise”

from a Brewers fan. Now if their front office is as witty as that person, I can understand the move

  23. dykstraw says:

vargas is an old montreal guy so i think there is a good shot omar will offer a minor league deal and if he takes it, that’s good news for us. this guy is a much better option that the limas of the world.

  24. MetsFanInVegas says:

Reyes pitched good today against the Nationals: 6 innings, 3 hits. I saw in an article today on stltoday.com he was pitching in front of teams interested in him and then they said referring to Reyes, “Deals today, could he be dealt tomorrow?”

  25. sundaysection15 says:

i keep trying to read this article but u get stuck at the point where it says “the brewers fans are..” since when do the brewers have fans!? hahah.. on a minor league contract why not sign vargas? there is no risk, and we all know there will be injuries to the starting roation. the more arms we have, the better. better chance of finding a hot hand for the short term when a starter goes down.

  26. krumbledkookie says:

Wouldn’t Kyle Lohse be nice right about now?

    • KinersKornerman says:

      Kyle Lohse? You keed, right?
The lifetime 63-74, 4.83 ERA Kyle Lohse?
I’d rather go with Charlie from Metsblog.

  27. RunReyesRun says:

I’m still a big fan of signing Freddy Garcia. Yes I know he can’t help us the first 2 months but we can get by with some combination of Sosa/Pelfrey/Duque/Figeuroa until he is ready. How much could he possibly want? I imagine he can’t be asking for more than Prior got from the Padres. This is a low risk/high reward situation. He was already in camp with his agent earlier in Spring Training so why doesn’t this get done already?
