I’m still a big fan of signing Freddy Garcia. Yes I know he can’t help us the first 2 months but we can get by with some combination of Sosa/Pelfrey/Duque/Figeuroa until he is ready. How much could he possibly want? I imagine he can’t be asking for more than Prior got from the Padres. This is a low risk/high reward situation. He was already in camp with his agent earlier in Spring Training so why doesn’t this get done already?

Yes. His 4.48 EqERA wasn’t bad last year, and it should improve with a better park and defense. His 8.6 VORP wasn’t horrible either. He allowed a lot of hits with a low GB%, so I’m assuming that his field wasn’t good.

As for Reyes, his numbers were mainly caused by crappy management skills and HORRIBLE luck, and you’d notice that if you look closely. PECOTA projects a 13.3 VORP and a 4.69 EqERA. In your language, they project a .277 BABIP, a 4.32 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.

Not awful, but pretty good for 2/3 of the season and just had a horrible month.

The Mets defense drops a whole lot of those ERA points for Vargas. He could be this year’s Jorge Sosa.

Well yes, this is what I meant commenting about last year, but he’s ANOTHER year older, suffered from a MAJOR injury, just changed his ENTIRE delivery and lost quite a few on his fastball. It doesn’t add up any more.

Hernandez and Delgado are lost causes. The Mets should just move on from them ASAP.

I wouldn’t say that. Considering how much defense and park dimensions matter, if something goes right for Vargas he could be a top of the rotation starter. He has just as much potential as Maine or Perez and he didn’t exactly get a break last year pitching in Milwaukee. With Shea being a pitchers’ park and a the Mets having a solid defense, Vargas could do fine here. He was very good for the first for months of the 2007 season as well.

115 ERA+ and a 1.17 WHIP are very much above average. of course, he only gave up 109 hits in 150 IP, so luck was certainly on his side last year.

Hernandez would be the biggest waste of a rotation spot I’ve ever seen. I thought he was above average last year, but COME ON!!! El Duque is terrible!!
