Damn you Delcrapo….just when I think MAYBE you kinda figured it out a little…

    DAMN YOU DELGADO!!!

    • davey_and_themets says:

on a random note…i just met mo vaughn, he had a meeting with my boss, hes some kind of real estate developer now…maybe we can get him back, another former left handed slugger, lol. hes drivin a nice m65 benz too, with all that money he stole from the mets

      • Lightweis says:

I’m a commercial real estate developer as well, down her in Atlanta….what do you do? I’d love to meet the guy if he does business down here.

    • darkstar73 says:

is this how it’s going to be all season? One game to the next, calling Delgado either done or on the way up? I can see it happening, and it frightens me.

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I expected a .270/30/100 season for 2008 until he hurt his wrist. Now I’m thinking .250/15/60 if he plays all year. Minaya has to let him go no matter what.

that sure is one complete box score isnt it? Just when it seemed like the season was getting close we get a game out of the first week of ST. What a mess! At least there are only 4 days left instead of 4 weeks left.

  3. mackey_sassers_arm says:

I wonder when the last time the mets have gone the entire spring training without once rolling out the opening day lineup.

  4. metzelaar says:

Delgado doesn’t look like he has any control over his body when he’s hitting. He’s constantly uppercutting pitches and missing them by a mile, or flailing at balls on the outside that he has not chance of hitting. What a mess.

I know it’s REALLY unrealistic, but what about Saltalamacchia? I heard the Rangers are going to keep him in the minors, since there isn’t any room for him on the roster right now. What are the chances of a Niese/Gotay/Sosa trade working out?

    • wolverine193 says:

Who could the Mets possibly offer for the guy? I agree, I’d love to get him, but I think the Mets would be better served to just live with the pile of crap for this year and then maybe look at Teixiera in the offseason.

      • Saltzy23 says:

Wolverine is now my new favorite poster on MetsBlog…

I LOVE how you simply refer to him as ‘the pile of crap’…

No nicknames, no references…..simply ‘the pile of crap’…..perfect.

  5. wolverine193 says:

Okay, I think we’re good. Starting staff is pitching pretty well, relief pitching is decent enough, Wright, Beltran, and Reyes look comfortable, and Delgado couldn’t hit a beach ball with a cricket mallet. Let’s start the season!

    • Saltzy23 says:

Funniest post of the day….Thanks for the chuckle….

    • ravi3 says:

Its actually a cricket bat. Mallets are used in croquet….I’m assuming you were thinking of cricket here, becuase it would probably be a lot harder to hit a baseball with a croquet mallet

    • The Glider says:

. . . or the broad side of a barn with a banjo?

  6. Jayperez says:

beltran stole a base… Thats a good sign. Guess the knees are feeling better

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

apparently he made it 73% of the way there before he felt a 5% decrease in his speed most likely resulting in him feeling about 86% tomorrow.

    • m00kie says:

he looked great running the bases today (the sb was as the trailing runner on a double steal w/ wright) and came very close to a great diving catch in center. Both of his runs scored were on good slides on close plays at the plate… I’d say he’s at least 92.7% ;)

      • Number41 says:

        DOUBLE STEAL???
Did “Sweet Champagne” put a play on?
Don’t toy with me…this is unheard of!

  7. Nate W. says:

Two things you dont often see in ST…

The Blue Jays only used 8 position players for the whole game today.

Roy Halladay gave up 10 runs (!) all in the same inning(!!) 6 were unearned.

  8. metzelaar says:

    Oh, nevermind

  9. paumanok says:

How quickly we forget how Delgado stabilized this lineup in 2006 and made that offense so potent. Remember he hit 38 homeruns and had 114 rbi’s? Not to mention the effect his presence had on Beltran.

And last year, admittedly, he had a down year. He only hit 24 homeruns (which was 3rd on the team anyway, 9 ahead of 4th place Alou), but he did have 30 doubles, the same amount as in 2006, and his average only dropped 7 points.

I understand there is cause for concern, especially in light of a heavy lefty lineup, but let’s at least give him through June before we throw him and his $16 million contract to the scrap heap. Or keep bashing him, and then change the tune from Delcrapo to Delgotit! when he starts smashing bombs at Citzens Bank.

    • M.DonaldGrant says:

stabilized? .265 ? How about ‘left a stable-full of guys on base’? Of course his avg only dropped 7 points last year- he was halfway to the Mendoza line already!

In ‘06 he was mediocre; last year he was bad (and bored!)- this year is shaping up to be catastrophic. That we are paying him the same salary as Vlad is a disgrace.

      • Volume11 says:

In 06′ he was mediocre? News to me…I always thought 38 home runs and 114 RBIs was all-star caliber. Not to mention 10 straight years of 30+ HRs and an awesome playoff run where he was the scariest bat (anyone remember the bombs he hit off of the Dodgers and Cardinals?).

I realize he declined greatly last season and it looks like its permanent, but show the guy some respect… he had an outstanding 06′ and for me its painful to watch because he was rock solid for 10 straight years…

mediocre in 07′ I’ll give you, but in 06′ he was amazing.

  10. stickguy says:

I think Delgado can do OK (at least as good as last year), if, and it is a big if, he can stay healthy and play reguarly. Say, at least 130 games? Without multiple trips to the DL that disrupt his timing.

He is a bit streaky anyway, so it is a killer for him to go down right when he is getting onto a hot streak, so he comes back from the DL cold as ice again.

If he is feeling good to start the season, and can stay on the field and healthy, he has a chance of getting going early, which can hopefully carry forward.

Or he could just be done!

    • darkstar73 says:

I think you’re on to something here, it is all about health. Delgado started last year our horribly, but he ended up getting better, then got injured, came back, was bad, got better, and got injured again, and then ended the season quite nicely. If he can stay healthy, I think we’ll all be ok with what he gives us. He’s not going to hit .300, and he’ll probably hit under his career avg. of 280, but I do think he can still be an RBI guy (around 90-100) and give us close to 30 HRs.

    • Number41 says:

      read my lips;
he needs a contract in the AL next season as a DH
      he will be fine….

  11. zen says:

“Billy Wagner will be a weekly guest expert on ESPN radio 1050 AM. He’ll appear on The Michael Kay Show throughout the season.”

    that’s all we need.

  12. gregf1106 says:

looks just like us leaving 12 men on base……I hat e watching them leave so many guys on base it really gets to me

    • m00kie says:

better than having no one on base!

      • kendychavez says:

yes, thank you. i hate that matt is even including these runners left on base numbers like it’s a bad thing. i love how many runners are being stranded this spring, everyone is doing a great job getting on base and as long as that keeps up we’re going to score plenty of runs.

  13. PhillyMet says:

Forget about Spring Training numbers…a lot of the regulars are still working on getting their timing down. Delgado has missed so much time, and its been one thing after another for him. I still think he has something left…he better or this offense will be Del-worthless and 8-10 LOB every game.

What worries me more than anything are playing games in cold weather in April/May. You have a lot of fragile guys on this team, and if they will need to avoid pulled muscles and other cold-weather type of injuries. I’m anxious as hall for Opening Day, but it sure sucks sitting in a cold stadium in April.

At least they open in FLA this year!

  14. DannyPhantom says:

An available player that Cerrone doesn’t want?

    Go figure.

  15. CaseStreet says:

Just curious, is there a goal for baserunners left on base? I mean, is there a max number of baserunners that a team wants to leave on base? I’d have to think anything over 4-6 is too much.

    • jbinva says:

      Zero.

    • metsftw says:

as few as possible? then again, if a pitcher pitches a perfect game against you, you’d have 0 LOB. soo…

    • jbinva says:

Yeah, not a very useful number. If you score 18 runs and leave 12 on base, who cares. Might be more useful to look at ratios, baserunners vs LOB, runs vs LOB. As an absolute measure, pretty meaningless.

      • kendychavez says:

at a macro level, the teams with the most runners left on base are going to be the teams with the highest OBPs and the teams with the highest OBPs are going to be the teams that score the most runs. when you’re stranding guys several innings a game it can get frustrating, but in the end it’s way better to strand guys than not be able to reach base.

saying ‘zero’ somehow implies that you shouldn’t bother getting on base if your’e not going to score, as though it were useless to reach base. baseball doesn’t work like that.

bottom line is, the mets have done a good job getting on base all spring and our runs scored and record reflects that. all those runners stranded bodes well for the future and the overall offensive output.

        • jbinva says:

“Zero” was a facetious answer to a pretty dumb question. In a perfect world, you drive in all your runners and don’t leave anything on the table. Then again, in a perfect world, you never make any outs. Baseball doesn’t work like that, :-)

That said, I agree completely with your first and third paragraphs.

  16. nmigliore says:

Sosa should be given that 5th spot.. he had a rotation spot last year.. i still have no clue why it was taken away he was doing fairly well..

    • Charlie says:

      looking at his splits:

      as a starter:
      14 starts, 80.1 innings, 7 wins, 6 losses, 4.59 era, 77 hits, 46 Ks, 22 BBs

      plus: wins half his games
minus: doesn’t last long; basically 5 2/3 innings on average.

      as a reliever:
      28 appearances, 32.1 innings, 2 wins, 2 losses, 4.18 era, 32 hits, 23 Ks, 12 BBs

      plus: walks few
minus: gave up an ER on average every other appearance

he as good as many other fifth starters…and, he a decent reliever, too.

    26. carlos beltran

a lot to look forward to…

  18. vitto79 says:

Sosa should get the spot for now………Send Pelfrey down to work on his game and Duque needs time to get better

Sanchez likely also needs time so looks like that opens 2 pen spots for Stokes and Smith…………….so why did we release Register right now?…………….ahhh wells

    Also is Gotay staying?
