…so, because i am confused, i talked with some one who would know, and it appears that Ruben Gotay has yet to be put on waivers, which is not to say he won’t be…it’s just that, as of right now, he has not been put on waivers…
By the way, yesterday I wrote that WFAN’s Ed Coleman had said Gotay was on waivers.
In review, it instead sounds like Coleman said: “I still put a question mark on Gotay, though he’s out of waivers.”
…like others, i thought i heard coleman say gotay is on waivers, but instead he said he is out of waivers…whatever that means…i assume he meant to say that gotay is out of options…of course, ii was not alone in my confusion, since the two hosts who coleman had been talking to, Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts, spent the next 10 minutes talking about gotay being on waivers, and what a huge mistake it would be to let him go…
…at any rate, as of now, gotay’s fate has yet to be determined…
…the thing is, it sounds like he’ll hit the wire at some point, and likely clear it, thus coming back to the Mets and making this whole miscommunication irrelevant…
For instance, as noted earlier, today at MLB.com, Marty Noble writes: “The Mets might give Gotay his outright release, though the club is fully aware they could lose him through waivers.”

You know who would be nice to have now? Jeff Keppinger. Take a look at what he did against lefties last season.
I always liked Keppinger and he literally plays everywhere. Willie didn’t seem to like him though, giving Anderson Hernandez (who sucks royally) every chance to win the second base job a few years back while just giving a cursory look to Keppinger. I’m glad to see he’s doing well for the Reds. Talk about a guy who’s tough to strike out, his K/AB ratio is off the charts.
Willie doesn’t seem like Gotay much either. I don’t understand what this organization has against this kid … I really don’t get it.
Keppinger and Gotay are both sub-par defensive second baseman. Willie and Omar place a way too high premium on defense at second base. They act like it’s as important of a defensive position as shortstop (it’s not).
Give me some offense there please.
I agree … and it’s not like they give the kid any kind of shot to develop his defense. How can you get better when you sit on the bench? Look at how Cano developed defensively, since he came up.
Chase Utley was also an absolute butcher defensively when he first came up. He has developed into one of the best defensive second baseman in the National League.
I completely agree with you.
Great point.
keppinger is an older, paler version of gotay. that’s why the trade happened. the same complaints about gotay were the same ones levied against keppinger except kepp has less range.
it stinks that gotay got hurt because he never got a chance to show any improved defense or right-handed hitting. there’s not enough time for him to gain ground and the team has to move on. it’s unfortunate for gotay but not a crisis-inducing issue.
Well obviously he wasn’t on waivers yesterday when it was reported considering he played in the game against the Braves.
Aren’t waivers revokable at this point? Can the Mets test is Gotay gets claimed, and then retract the waiver if someone does?
The first time a player is placed on waivers in a season, it’s revokable. After that, it isn’t.
I’ve been an Omar defender, but as others have noted, Omar traded Jeff Keppinger for Ruben when it seemed unncessary to do so. Keppinger was a great all-around player and got hurt badly covering second base by hanging in there to get the out, in a minor league game. He was/ is tough and capable. He showed great promise as a hitter, and he was a good defensive second baseman. His teammates loved him, despite the fact that he was quiet. So why make that trade? It seems that Omar made some trades just to make trades, though it seems now he’s more careful about moving personnel. I’d love to have Keppinger back; I always thought he was the type of gritty, quiet, good teammate player in the mold of Jeff Kent.
But you forget that we were in the situtation with Kepp that we are in with Gotay right now. It was keep him on the 25 or lose him and the Royals were in the same place wiht Gotay. The trade was to exchange players that the teams though would peak as utility IF for each other to control them a couple more years. To be fair, it seems like the career projection for Kepp (and probably Gotay) was correct.
actually the two players both had one option year remaining when they were swapped.
They were nearly identical except for (their nationality) the idea that Gotay was a SS while Kepp clearly wasnt. Turns out that neither is a SS.
Wait wait wait. Gritty yes thats a good adjective for Jeff Kent but quiet and good teammate? very questionable. The guy is a well known douche bag who is not quiet when someone rubs him the wrong way. Also i have never read or seen anything that makes kent a good teammate.
Probably should of just kept the comparisons at gritty maybe hard working.
Can we stop listening to what Ed Coleman has to say?
Ok, I agree with much of what is said, but Jeff Keppinger was a “great all around player” is more than a little bit of a stretch. The Royals who dont’ exactly have the luxury of getting rid of talent, dropped him. Guys like Keppinger, its hard to know if they’re good Triple A players or legit major leaguers.
And I don’t believe the Mets are putting too much stock in defense, its not sexy and there isn’t a great stat that stands out showing its importance but you can’t lower its importance. There are so many times in a game where a great defensive player does something that you will never notice from positioning to relay throws etc…that affect a game. Castillo made a huge diffence when they got him last year at second base and if we had Eckstein there this year, you would see what a difference defense makes.
I think the Mets are putting a lot of stock into defense. I can’t think of a team that is more solid “up the middle” with Schneider, Castillo/Reyes, and Beltran in center. That being said, I have always been very skeptical of the idea that second base is a defensively important position, and I was a second baseman for a while. An outfielder with soft enough hands can play the position adequately, and usually his bat can more than make up for any sporadic spectacular plays that only the best defensive second basemen can make. This is all pretty untrue for shortstops. I really like Gotay’s bat, and I am sure he’ll get picked up somewhere on the wire.
Its probably because Willie played 2nd. Thats how dumb he is. You would think Gotay couldnt even throw a ball with the way they talk about him.
Tell me as a strategy, why on earth would you sign an aging 2nd baseman to a four year contract?
As we have all said, the best is how Anderson Hernandez gets all the chances in the world hitting .150 yet Keppinger and Gotay get shipped off for being better then average.
The more you think of it the more all signs point to Willie liking defensive 2nd baseman since he himself couldnt hit for power.
And as another person noted. Defense usually comes with age. It is much harder to get better at hitting, and impossible to develop more power. So in my eyes, I go with guys that can hit and develop their defense as opposed to guys that cant hit.
I just wrote this and it didnt post but long story short Kent may be gritty and a hard worker but quiet and a good teammate he is not.
i think its pretty well known that jeff kent is a douche bag. a great player but a douche bag.
well, i guess your two arguments would make sense if anyone was talking about jeff kent…
Actually, euchreking in a post above referenced Jeff Kent.
I questioned the Kep-Rubie trade at the time. I felt Jeff was looked at as a decent glove with limited bat potential. Unless I am mistaken, he was hitting around 340 late in the season last year, albeit (although) it was in limited AB’s. anyone know if he reached 200 AB’s or was it more like 150 ?
Ruben definitely deserves a shot …. The Luis Love Affair can not possibly go on for the full four years of the outrageous contract …. He was a great table setter in Miami, but once the knees, ankle or legs in general go, it’s pretty much over for the spark plug type of guys.
Anderson Hernandez sucks! Why is he still around? He can’t hit and should not be on this team….
