Earlier today, RHP Brian Stokes threw four innings and 65 pitches, following Pedro Martinez, during a minor-league game.
…interesting…i wonder if this makes him a darkhorse candidate for the fifth starter…or, if he can be the long-man from the bullpen, it could make Jorge Sosa available to be traded, or used as a fifth starter as well…
The Mets acquired Stokes from the Rays in exchange for cash in late November of last year.
The 28-year-old Stokes was 2-7 with a 7.07 ERA in 59 games for Tampa Bay last season, allowing 49 runs and 90 hits in 62 innings.

I thought I heard on Evan and Joe this morning that the word out of camp was that it was decided at the “meeting” that Big Pelf would be the fifth starter.
Anyone else here that?
they said that there will be a meeting and Heyman THINKS it will be Pelfrey…
hmm…i thought heyman said he’s hearing that it would be Big Pelf.
i guess we’ll see.
thanks for clearing that up.
i could be wrong too, just how i heard it.
Stokes has not gained my confidence this spring. I would not trust him in a regular season game, and he does not deserve a spot on the roster. Watching him, he seems like a meltdown waiting to happen.
Yeah, I really wouldn’t say Stokes has what you’d called a record of achievement. What do scouting reports say is his best stuff? Is he young enough that Jacket can make him into a good reclamation project?
the guy gave up 90 hits in 62 innings last year… clearly he lacks decent stuff and a live arm, making him (unlike OP or maine) pretty much impossible to salvage. even the jacket can’t make something out of absolutely nothing.
I am fine with Pelfrey as the 5th……….he got shelled once in Spring training people……..just let him go for it unless they sign Vargas
Stokes is the guy in for Sanchez………….Smith is real good but I think he still is the odd man out since he has options OR is turned into Matt Murton which makes alot of sense………..young players
I hate flip flopping on this so much. I guess just as much as anyone else I have no idea what the right decision is. Last week I was POSITIVE it should be Pelf, but MAAAAAN, that game on Sunday really changed my mind. He was beyond awful…..awful and flustered….not a good combo…
I’d really rather have him find his legs in AAA where losing the game only hurts him and his confidence, versus games in the bigs that may come back to bite us in the ass later on….
More importantly – how did Pedro do in the minor league start? Any soreness or anything that would be concerning?
last march we were worried about who the #1 starter was going to be…this year it’s the #5. sounds good
exactly, zen, exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last year resulted in the worst collapse in the history of the sport…you cannot blame people for still being leary. Maybe not you, but this “Will everyone please stop being so pessimistic!” theme is ridiculous. I’m over it, but last season will hurt FOREVER. I will not have faith until I have a championship. You cannot blame those who are still scared to pop their heads out of their holes yet.
“Hey, this failed on the Titanic which resulted in its sinking, but we’ve cleared issue that up this time. Now we just have to make sure there is enough gas, and were good to go!”….
Just not a comforting thought….
If they are winning, I promise…not one bad word outta me…
ah saltzy…
you can worry about last year while the rest of us will focus on the present.
What part of ‘I’m over it’ did you not understand? OVER IT. Learn and move on. Doesn’t mean it didnt happen. Learning from it is different from harping on it.
Divorcees move on. They get remarried. Doesnt mean they dont think back and wonder what happened and what they can learn from their mistakes. Getting Santana certainly was a nice step in the right direction.
I dont know about you, but the last game I saw them play was game 162 where I left after witnissing them give the season away. It hurt. A lot. Of couse ‘08 is totally different than ‘07. I have high hopes for this year . But if you cant even understand people being hesitant over this team, then I wonder if you are a fan. If in 5 years if fans are still harping on the collapse then I totally understand. It was the last game they played for Christs Sake!….can I even see Opening Day before I totally forgive and move on? Thanks…
Do we know results from these minor league starts. I know we say that results typically do not matter in spring training, but how else can we, as fans, measure the effectiveness of a pitch. I would guess – at least in Stokes’ case – that he wouldn’t be playing with new pitches or throwing one pitch over and over…
they didn’t even have umpires.
So Matt Murton is the odd man out and not on the Cubs 25 man…………..go get him………..I think he has options left but could be had
It may seem like a small thing, that last spot on the roster, but I think this team, while very good and in my opinion likely to win the NL East, would be much better with Murton. Not that he’s a huge difference-maker, but his bat would REALLY help off the bench. If there’s a way to get him without giving up the farm, you’ve got to at least talk to the Cubs about it.
God, no Brian Stokes, please. Why should he be in consideration for the 5th spot, because he pitched well in a minor league game? He’s terrible.
That’s what I’ve been saying. Stokes should be released, and Register should be making this team instead of him. Stokes is awful, plain and simple.
