News: Register Clears Waivers
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 27, 2008 3:27 pm

Steve Register was cleared waivers, according to Adam Rubin and his blog for the Daily News.

For more on Register’s future, read Rubin.

as noted the other day, because he is a Rule V pick, register must now be offered back to the Rockies for $25,000…in all likelihood, colorado will welcome him home and then try to trade him back to the Mets…

    seriously, the graphics are priceless

  2. BringBackDykstra says:

The mets placed Reuben Gotay on waivers…ugh. I knew we should have kept Keppinger…what…?

  3. metties1 says:

I think these 2 moves should be grouped with the Henry Owens/Matt Lindstrom/Heath Bell/Brian Bannister variety rather than the Jose Valentin/John Maine/Ollie Perez/Marlon Anderson variety

At least the Gotay move.. Fernando Taties…please

    • Nate W. says:

lets wait until Gotay is actually lost for nothing before ripping it? He could end up in New Orleans playing everyday which wouldnt be the worst thing for Gotay or the Mets.

    • metinDC23 says:

Seriously- I can’t read all this crying over Gotay anymore. I liked him and I feel bad for him because of the situation but its the best move for the Mets right now. They need someone who can hit against lefties. Right now off the bench we have Easly aaaaand…

And do we really think Gotay has a huge role in this teams future? He’s a back-up second baseman- we’ll find another.

The best thing for him is probably to wind up on another team where he’ll have a chance to play more often. Hopefully someone shows interest and the Mets can work out a trade.

  4. Nate W. says:

The Rockies traded a player to the Royals for a player to be named layer. This clears room on the 40 man roster for them to take Register back and send him to the minors.

    • chicagometfan says:

The Mets and rockies can still work out a trade for Register. If Register is traded to the mets then he does not have to stay on the Major League roster all year.

      • metinDC23 says:

Yeah, I hope they can keep him. I’m kinda confused over why they would keep Smith or Stokes up and not him…

        • Tidewater says:

Probably because Register has no Major League experience. But of course if nobody gives him major league experience, he’ll never have major league experience.

It’s just tough to have to commit to him being on the active roster all season.

    • pedros rooster says:

Who cares? You’d think we were losing someone noteworthy. We’re returning a middling middle reliever, one that can be replaced by any number of carbon-based life forms we’ll stockpile in New Orleans. Juan Rincon, Tony Armas, Jr., etc., etc…..

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

yea who cares hes just a middle reliever, i mean would we have been any better last year if we had lindstrom bell and owens in our system…..oh wait

        • pedros rooster says:

Lindstrom, Bell, and Owens all had minor-league success. Steven Register has nothing to show for his minor league career except the illusion of 37 saves last year (with a 4.03 ERA).

Think before you type, smart guy.

        • MudvilleNine says:

Ooooooo 37 saves just an illusion. It only led all levels of the minors in saves. Seems to be a significant number to me, especially when he’s young and is projected to be a closer in the near future. Thats why most of us want to keep him, in hopes of him being our future closer. But of course you’re the expert. It’s more important to keep those carbon-based lifeforms with no future over a young pitcher with potential and a future. All I can say is you have a lot of nerve telling anyone to think before they type.

  5. rjgats says:

The Mets have to get this kid. Smith and Stokes are not for the bullpen. Smith needs more work in AAA and Stokes is still the Stokes of last year. Register offers insurance for the bullpen. I like his stuff.

  6. KHOFFLER says:

Has anyone else thought about the fact that he could go back to Colorado with some very valuble information? Or am i just paranoid? The later I think.

    • Gland says:

Really? You think he’s a spy?

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

this isnt football the guy doesnt have a playbook. whats he going to tell the rockies? “they have this guy named santana hes pretty good, we def will need to use more righties against him”.

    • Another Matt says:

You’re worried about what Register might say to a team in a different division after 1 spring?

How about what Glavine might tell the Braves?

But hey guess what… I don’t think that’s gonna make any difference either.

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

What’s he going to say? “psst… guys, come here… over in mets camp, they have some crazy yoda speaking, mullet wearing weirdo running around in a jacket telling people to throw strikes and not to put ketchup on their ice cream .”

    • Tidewater says:

What kind of info? Doesn’t anyone who gets traded have that info?

  7. icedrake523 says:

What is this with Darling going on TBS for Sundays? He’s the best of the trio. How dare they try to steal him.

  8. barrettn says:

damn whenever players go through a abd year most people just give up on them. Does anyone remember how good smith was last year, and he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings today.

    • Another Matt says:

The first 2/3 was a bit hairy… a hit, a walk and a HBP to force in OP’s last ER. So technically scoreless, but not the way to force one’s self onto the team.

I like the kid though, he still has the potential to be a very useful reliever.

    • Tidewater says:

Yeah, 12/3 “scoreless” Middle relievers have to be judged a bit on inherited runners scored, and in that regard, Smith does not hold up well to scrutiny.

  9. metsrbest says:

Hmmm…Register clears waivers, Rockies take him back. Gotay clears waivers. Mets trade Gotay for Register. That will be what’s done. Book it. ;-)

    • Another Matt says:

Hmm… they did just give the starting 2B job in Colorado to Jayson Nix, whose minor league numbers have not screamed ‘promote me now’.

I’m still hoping Gotay can be flipped as part of a deal for Murton.

    • KFS says:

If Rockies wanted Gotay, why can’t they just claim him? DUH!

      • SevenTrain says:

Because, unlike a Rule 5 pick, if a team claims a regular player off of waivers, the team that put him on waivers has to right to rescind. Specifically, if the Rockies attempt to take Gotay off of waivers, the Mets could claim him back.

Rescinding is actually quite common. From what I understand, teams will often attempt to guage a player’s trade value by putting him on waivers. If a team attempts to claim the player, the team that put him up will rescind and attempt to work a trade.

You might be wondering what keeps a team from continually rescinding? Well, if a team rescinds, then the player has not “cleared waivers.” In Gotay’s case, that means the Mets must either keep him on their 25-man roster or grant him an out-right release.

        • Tidewater says:

Not all waivers can be rescinded. Are you sure these are? And if the Mets rescind, they have to keep him on the big league roster because he’s out of options.

        • Tidewater says:

But then, you just said that. :)

        • KFS says:

NO! The Mets can’t rescind since Gotay was placed on irrevocable waivers. I suggest you check again.

Also, if Colorado claims Gotay, they’d have to pay $25,000. But since the Mets would have to pay them $25,000 and return Register, it makes no sense for the to work out a trade for Gotay since they can basically get Gotay AND Register for free. Of couse, that’s if they want Gotay.

NY Times says Mets and Rockies are trying to work out a trade

  11. oleosmirf says:

heath bell and Rick Peterson did not get along well. Bell had no future with the Mets.
