Expectations: World Series or Bust
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 28, 2008 1:45 pm

In 2005, Willie Randolph’s first season, the Mets finished over .500 for the first time since 2001.

In 2006, they won their division, but lost to the cardinals in Game 7 of the NLCS.

Last season, after being in first place for much of the year, they fell short of playoffs and lost the division by one game to the Phillies.

Would you sign Rios to a five-year, $60 million deal?

The playoffs are a crapshoot…I’d like to see the Mets at least advance on 2006, but given the unpredictability of October, I don’t think I could get too worked up if they didn’t win the NL, unless it was because of some boneheaded move.

    • darkstar73 says:

agreed, hard to expect a lot in the postseason, it is such a crapshoot. People look at Boston, but both times they’ve won the Series they’ve been a game away from elimination (and mere outs in one series) only to stage improbable comebacks. That’s why I put my expectation on winning the NL East, from there, we’ll have to see how things shake out.

    • Nate W. says:

thirded. We can expect them to make the playoffs over a 160 game season. Expecting anything to happen according to plan in a short series is unrealistic.

  2. Ceetar says:

Seriously, who picked ‘compete for the NL East’? Roving Philly fans?

    • TobeRinkler says:

I picked it, bee-yotch. It’s the only non-spoiled-brat answer out there. And I grew up outside Philly & would NEVER root for that land of whatever it is, so stuff it in your sitar, ceetar.

  3. sylvan says:

It all depends on what you mean by “satisfied”. Obviously, I’m not going to be happy about it if the Mets lose in the playoffs! But I’m not going to call for Willie and Omar to be fired or something. The playoffs are basically luck. The Yankees didn’t have any magical mojo in 1996-2000, and they aren’t “cursed” or “chokers” now. It’s all about sample size.

What if the Mets miss the playoffs? Again, it depends on whether the Mets underperform or if they are simply beaten. The Braves and Phillies could both field great teams if it all comes together for them. Nothing is granted to us. If the Mets play hard but narrowly lose out in a classic pennant race, I wouldn’t want anyone to take the fall for it. But if the team plays like crap down the stretch and there’s backbiting in the clubhouse and people complaining to the media? It might be time for Willie to go.

    • Ceetar says:

Actually, The Yankees ARE cursed. (and the more it’s talked about, the more effect it will have)

Coincidence that this is the 86th season since Yankee Stadium opened? I think not.

  4. Nate W. says:

    in my opinion…
“At minimum, what level of success do you expect from the Mets in 2008, that is to say: if they meet X level, you will be satisfied?”

is two different questions with two different answers.

I expect them to make the playoffs, I will only be satisfied when they win it all.

  5. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i dont care what the fashion of losing is if this team stays healthy (relatively speaking of course figuring alou and duke will be up and down) and doesnt make the playoffs it will be a disaster.

  6. mackey_sassers_arm says:

I feel like this offseason/spring training has dragged on FOREVER… I can only imagine how long next year is going to feel like when we are waiting to cut the ribbon on Citi field.

  7. Tidewater says:

Why can’t we just enjoy watching baseball and pulling for our team? I want them to win ‘em all, but the glory of baseball is the grace and the story that unfolds over a season. And if they fail to go all the way, God has invented spring that we may dream again.

When did we become Yankee fans?

    • darkstar73 says:

i believe it happened sometime during the ‘06 season, i’ve been fighting against it ever since, but to no avail.

      • Tidewater says:

I have a co-worker who is a big Mets fan who has been agonizing over this and over that, and finally a couple of days ago I told him to shut up and enjoy the season.

I like baseball. I like the Mets. I want to enjoy it, not suffer angst over it.

        • darkstar73 says:

i’m with you man, i understand having angst, but to a certain degree. It’s still baseball, if all I ever did was worry about it and agonize over it, I don’t think i’d follow it anymore. I have enough stress in my life. Baseball is my release, not the be all end all.

    • TobeRinkler says:

Amen to all of that except the God part which I can’t endorse & the Yankme line whose “we” includes no part of my understanding of how the universe functions.

      • Tidewater says:

        Funny you used “amen!”

I don’t really endorse it either, it just felt more poetic.

I really dislike polls like this. Confidence ratings are one thing. But once you start setting benchmarks as to where you as a fan expect a team to finish the season, you’re setting yourself up to be disappointed. Also, the results of these kinda of polls are so spurious. The people who vote are the people who check this site most regularly, who are probably the most avid fans- which will give you a biased sample. I know I’m being overly critical, but these polls just kind of annoy me as a fan.

I am absolutely no fan of Willie Randolph as our “manager”, and I will admit Omar’s full autonomy star has fallen in my opinion as well. 2008 is absolutely a must win season for either of them to keep their jobs. As far as Randolph goes, we finished the season poorly every year since he arrived. 2005 we were exhausted, 2006 we were completely outmanaged in the NLCS, 2007 Willie was a deer in headlights to everyone but himself and Omar. I don’t want to hear about his rings anymore, he was not Reggie Jackson on those 77 & 78 Yankee teams, he was a young role player. Which is why I can not understand how he can clearly despise having young and hungry players on our team. With the exception of Wright and Reyes he has thrown every other young player under the bus. It is beginning to make me sick. I also believe this should be Omar’s last stand, win or get lost. Why is our roster full of ancient players closer to collecting social security than being 30yo? Put up or shut up Omar. Yes I love the fact the Santana is here, but I can not stand hearing how Moses and Old Duque are our key players! When I was a kid I loved imagining our younger player developing and wanting to root for them. I still want our team to win every year, which is not realistic I know. But if we blow 2008, I never want to see or hear from Omar, Willie, Moses, Old Duque, Bored Delgado, Luis Castillo and the likes again. Send them all out to pasture and give our younger players a shot to learn and hustle from David, Jose, Beltran and Santana! Lets Go Mets!!

This is something we have to work on as fans. “Expect” and “satisfied” are not terms I like to see when it comes to projecting into a baseball season.

For me, I’m happy to just sit back, and enjoy the ride with this team. I’m excited for Johann, and the rotation should be much improved. We are as good as anybody. Let’s just sit back, cheer our team through good and bad, and hope for the best. Whether we are personally “satisfied” with the outcome of this season is not something to worry about.

At this point, we have as good a chance as anybody to win it all. That’s all you can ask for at this point in the season.

  12. batsinthepelfrey says:

anyone see that antonio pierce and his girlfriend/wife jessica maldonado (aka jocelyn pierce), host of mets weekly, pleaded guilty to neglect of their pit bulls in monroe township, NJ. both had to pay $1300 and give up their pit bulls as part of the plea agreement. lovely. perhaps after she is done bowling and golfing she can do a story on the pit bulls.

  13. likeitoughttabe29 says:

I don’t beleive any fan is ready to sit back and enjoy the ride with this team after last year. We all sat back and enjoyed the ride last year and look where it got us.

It makes me anxious about all the sports teams i root for. almost cringed at the ranger game last night when Micheletti kept talking about playoff positioning instead of making sure they clinch a spot first.

  14. jerseymetsfan says:

didn’t even make the palyoffs last year, and ourlineup is this thin. pitching looks great, but i am hoping the team can show some balls and just win the east.

  15. LImetfan08 says:

Random wonder: Why does it seem like every other team except the Mets can hit homeruns? It just seems that their power is diminishing, and although they should be putting up at least 6-7 runs a game, they haven’t really done that in the past few seasons. I can’t wait to see a game where they click on all cylinders with Santana striking out 14 and the Mets scoring 8 runs. Is it just me, or do other fans notice the decline in power from the Mets’ power?

  16. gan6317 says:

The question is actually two parts and should have two different sets of answers. What I expect my team to do, and what I would be satisfied if they really did are two different things. Honestly, the success is going to depend on divisional play, and the Phillies right now are younger, faster, and more confidant. But what would I be satisfied with? Hell, if undefeated season was an option I would have picked it.
