In five innings against the O’s today, Orlando Hernandez allowed one run, four hits, one walk and struck out two.
Mike Pelfrey is now on the mound.
According to Dovie, who is at the game, “El Duque was pretty impressive…Besides for the third, when he ran into a little trouble, he looked pretty impressive in the fourth and fifth, retiring the O’s in order – even striking out Kevin Millar and Adam Jones on a nasty change-up”
By the way, Dovie will be getting married on Sunday, according to his friend, David, so congratulations Dovie.

I guess El Duque is the fifth starter until he gets hurt. I set the under over on 6 starts. What do you think?
over.
he’ll be strong out of the gate giving 5 2/3 or 6 innings per game. ill predict 2 wins and 1 no decision through the first 6 though
I guess they shouldn’t have bothered messing with him.
High leg kick = effective Duque = eventually injured Duque.
Very, very true. That’s where having a Pelfrey, Figueroa, Armas or a Sosa help. I’m not worried about El Duque. When he is healthy he is productive. Righties hit below .200 against him last year. Anybody that can do that, still has something left in the tank. I say he makes 24 or 25 starts this year, similar to last year, with his occasional vacations in between.
as much as i was hoping Pelf would step up, and as bad as the orioles are, this is GREAT news.
Yeah, but will he be able to walk tomorrow?
6 games sounds about right. That will get him into early May before he breaks down.
Wonder how Pelf is doing?
3 BB, 1 SO, 0H, 0ER so far in 2 innings.
many of you are seriously underestimating El Duque. The dude is a bulldog. He is too proud to just let this go and not step up.
I think El Duque is a brilliant pitcher when he is healthy. He is a bulldog when he is one the mound. The problem is that he is rarely healthy enough to pitch. Everyone always talks about how good he is inthe post-season, but as a met he is always hurt at the end of the season.
Hello, Mr. Hernandez. Welcome to the rotation.
Encouraging news…Can someone tell me why the second to last game of the spring, in which we get a real mlb roster and a battle for the five spot is not broadcast anywhere on tv or radio in this day and age??
Lets pick up where we left off on Sep 30 last year, broken hearted and blue (and orange) and win this thing already
shenanigans
SNY doesn’t broadcast road ST games. I would be willing to venture I could have gotten it on the orioles station on my directv if I was home….
well, it has to be el duque at this point. big pelf isn’t ready.
pelfrey just gave up two runs to, essentially, kill his chances of making the club. he is not ready (mentally, physically, whatever).
by the way, big pelf is getting hit by non-starters. AGAIN.
Pelfrey gives up 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth. Mets lose, Mets lose. :-(
el duque is best 5th starter in baseball
the mets will need great starting pitching b/c the bottom of their line-up is mediocre at best
Pelfrey needs to mentally get it together. all the quotes i saw from him this spring sounds like he already knew he wasnt going to make it. and just wanted to get to AAA already.
He should have been out there saying I am not going to let them send me down. Im going to make them keep me on this team.
He reminds me of ELI before this season, then ELI finally stepped up, grew confidence, became a leader.
Too bad, that’s it for Pelfrey–just punched his ticket for NO. That said, no biggie given Hernandez looked good enough to go. Ride El Duque until he breaks, and hope that’s long enough for Pelfrey to get himself together in AAA.
Key is that one guy proved he was ready, and, frankly, when it comes to a guy you can trust with the ball, this was the better option of the two to start the season.
I’ll take it. Hopefully Pelf can find himself while still in the Mets organization–he’s young so there’s plenty of hope. In the meantime Santana, Martinez, Maine, Perez, and Hernandez look just dandy to me.
THis is probably the best thing that could have happened for the mets today. Now Pelfrey goes back down where he should be and Duque will start the season in the rotation instead of us losing him.
El Duke was our BEST PITCHER ALL SUMMER. He will be a perfect #5 Starter.
PELFREY is not good. His pitches DO NOT MOVE AT ALL. HE Doesnt throw 95-97. HE NEVER THREW THAT HARD and EVEN IF HE DID- IT’s TOO STRAIGHT.
HE IS A BUST.
I DONT WANT TO HEAR HIS NAME AGAIN.
HE STARTED LAST YEAR 0-7, HE WOULD DO THE SAME TO US THIS YEAR.
ALL WE NEED IS OUR #5 IS TO GO 5 INNINGS AND TO GO .500 FOR THE YEAR
-BRING ON THE DUKE!!!!!!
i still want to sign vargas
Had real hopes for Pelf, but he just sucks so far. He needs a lot of what he doesn’t have yet–the mental and the physical.
Best of Luck to ED, but I doubt he’ll be around long.
