Well crap if he can do it without injury then why would he not keep doing it………….I think we all know El Duque can produce it’s just a matter of health

he will hit the DL several times this yr so options are needed

Anyone hear anything on Vargas going anywhere?……..or if Register and Gotay have been picked up elsewhere?

    • Nate W. says:

Register cleared waivers and it looks like the Rockies intend to take him back and option him to AAA.

      • Jova1931 says:

I heard the Rockies and Mets are trying to work a trade because the Rockies don’t intend on keeping Register.

        • adropofvenom says:

Technically, the Rockies would have to accept Register back in order to trade Register in that scenario anyways.

        • Nate W. says:

I dont think anyone has said the Rockies dont intend on keeping him, just that the Mets would like to trade for him.

        • Jova1931 says:

I did hear that the Rockies accepted Register and that is why they are trying to work out a deal.

        • Nate W. says:

The Mets have given up trying to hold onto Steven Register. He’s headed back to the Rockies, and will pitch for Triple-A Colorado Springs. – Adam Rubin

    • Mister Koo says:

Vargas had surgery on his hip and is out for 3 months.

      • CaseStreet says:

        That is bs.

      • KFS says:

What can I say, some people just have a knack for picking talent between Tatis and Gotay.

        • darkstar73 says:

i don’t think anyone can really argue Gotay doesn’t have a bigger upside down the road then Tatis, and if you think that’s what this was about, then you sorely misunderstood the move.

        • Nate W. says:

Gotay also has more present use on the bench than Pagan. And Pagan has options… its baffling.

Tatis/Marlon Anderson/Endy sharing LF while Alou is out would work fine, and Gotay and Easley backup the IF.

It seems so obvious… doesnt it?

        • KFS says:

I think I’d prefer Gotay over Tatis. If anything, Gotay was never really given a chance. Even as he was red hot last year, we went out and acquired Castillo. Clearly the Mets front office sees nothing more than a occasional fill-in in Gotay and every other option is a better alternative to Gotay such as a healthy 33 year-old that’s only amassed 56 ABs since 2003.

Versatility has nothing to do with Tatis being on the roster (only position where he’s played 50 innings is 3B). His RH bat has nothing to do with him being on the roster (he’s still a career .260 hitter and the last time he hit .260 we where in a difference millenium). This is a “anyone but Gotay” move by Omar and Willie. You can’t deny this.

I’m not saying Gotay will be a star. Far from it actually. What really gets me is the habitual practice of singling certain guys out and never giving them a fair shot at playing time and doing everything possible to run them off.

      • darkstar73 says:

this will effectively ruin Gotay’s career, where does he fit on the Braves roster? He’ll be sitting on the bench the whole year. Move makes no sense, except for spite. Oh well, nice to know you Gotay.

  2. Joe Bacci says:

    this changes EVERYTHING!!!

    • TheIcon says:

It could. I mean he’s used the high leg kick his whole career and then to suddenly change, it is going to throw you off. If he comes out of today’s game looking good, he’ll most likely be pitching next Saturday.

  3. followmelevi says:

I’m so glad he’s returned to his normal windup. You don’t just suddenly change your windup after building your entire career on it and expect success in a month… especially when he mostly throws junk and relies on people getting tricked by weird arm angles, _high leg kicks_, slow pitches, etc.

    • Nate W. says:

What if he is only doing it today to make the team?

      • NYMase says:

Well, if he’s only doing it to make the team then it’s because he’s uncomfortable with the new motion…It doesn’t make sense to try and change his delivery at 42…If he needs more time to heal, so be it…Let Pelfrey get some starts in April and May until El Duque is ready…The last thing they need to do is change his delivery so that he can rush and make the team…Hopefully he’s fine now and has no problems with his usual high leg kick…Because he has been very successful with the high leg kick and was the Mets best pitcher at times last year…If he needs more time, then let him have more time…Don’t change his delivery, though…That’s like trying to make Jose Reyes learn a whole new way to run…

Thank God the high leg kick is back!

        • metsdude13 says:

Yea, but if they had him change it, there was probably a reason. Like they don’t think his body can take pitching like that every five days. If that’s the case, does it really help us that he pitches well today if he can’t repeat it using the high leg kick? The guy makes me real nervous.

        • Mister Koo says:

The question is, would you rather have Duque make 30 starts but be horrible, or would you rather have an effective Duque make 15-20 starts with someone else filling in the rest?

        • Tidewater says:

What a ridiculous thing to worry about.

  4. CaseStreet says:

Does he now get his bunion numbed before the game?

  5. JohnMilner says:

Yeah, and why don’t we make Reyes run more upright, so that he doesn’t hurt his hammy anymore…

  6. vitto79 says:

haha something tells me he won’t be doing it just today to make the team…………….and I have no idea if this is going to work for a entire season…………..thank god he’s the 5th starter now eh?

Just think about Santana, Pedro, Perez, Maine ………..now smile and realize the 5th starter doesnt need to be unbelievable…….just go 5 and then turn it over to Sosa, Wise , Scho and have then anchor a few innings………

as for Vargas , Jason I knew was out which is too bad for him cause he was a option but I was talking about FA Claudio Vargas from Miluakee

  7. Another Matt says:

If Duque’s the 5th starter, screw Pedro, we need to rest Duque when off days come up.

Besides, most starters don’t like working off an extra day’s rest, so is it worth making everyone else less effective to accomodate Pedro? We can have spot starters take up occasional starts if he’s feeling gassed.

  8. adropofvenom says:

Is it just me, and I really don’t do much complaining about SNY, but this game should be televised. It’s a heads-up matchup between El Duque and Mike Pelfrey for the 5th starters role. I know as a fan I’m killing to watch this game. Very bad job on SNY’s part for not showing it.

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

I think the better case should be made to air this game since it’s the “final” spring game technically with the Civil Rights game tomorrow. I’m sure it’s hard for SNY to schedule something on the fly based on pitching match-ups. There’s a lot of red-tape to cut through when running a network and I’m sure decisions cant be made with 48 hours notice. But bottom line is this is probably the last look at a lot of these players. We knew that when the ST schedule was first announced so it should have been on TV regardless of Duque-Pelfrey.

    • zigner says:

SNY only broadcasts home spring training games.

  9. acraane says:

Ahhh, the return of Orlando “El Bunion” Hernandez!

  10. sylvan says:

Good to see him notch an actual strikeout, I guess. I wonder what velocity he’s at? (And is there anything more infuriating than trying to follow a game through the “live” boxscore?)

  11. stickguy says:

I think this is good. Also fits into my theory of using Duque hard until he breaks, and then putting him on the scrap heap.

Kind of like when you have an old car, that has been good to you, but is starting to wear out, the tranny is slipping, it burns some oil, etc. But still runs good, usually.

Not worth fixing, so you just drive it until something major fails, then junk it!

Maybe they get a season out of Duque, maybe they get 10 starts before he falls apart. Just have Pelfrey pitching in AAA for when (not if) it happens.

  12. Elbuniondelduque says:

guess what? Gotay was claimed by the Braves!! Figures!!
    I read it on newsday

    • NYMetz6986 says:

i just read that too…its really amazing…why wouldnt they claim him…i wonder if he’ll be on the mlb roster to start the season…what a waste…and for the awful tatis.

    • dykstraw says:

so what does this mean? do they really want him or are they just crapping up our attempt to be able to send him down? i don’t think they’ll trade with us.

      • Nate W. says:

yea, I’m curious if the Mets can still retract the waiver and instead send Pagan to AAA. Obiously they can only trade him to the Braves now.

        • KFS says:

You can’t retract as he was put on irrevocable waivers. He is a Brave, just gotta deal with it.

        • Nate W. says:

          got a link for that?

        • KFS says:

It’s on mets.com in the news section. And it’s standard process to use irrevocable waivers for dropping players to the minors after they’re out of options.

  13. vitto79 says:

Ohhhhhhh great Gotay is on the Braves……..so we get to see him all the time too……….hope he does’nt haunt us but hey good for him he deserves to be on a Major League Roster

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

I don’t think Gotay was going to be a difference maker on this team, but I do concur with those that say it’s shame to lose him at the expense of stiff like Tatis, regardless of what side of the plate Tatis hits from.

    • KFS says:

At least not this season…and probably won’t be with the Braves.

They got a kid name Lillibridge destined to take over at 2B. Gotay won’t start unless something goes very wrong down in ATL…hmmm, I hope Gotay starts.

  14. zen says:

when el duque is your #5 starter you are in very, very good shape. 9-4 3.72era (#12 in era in the nl last year)

  15. Mets Fan In Philly says:

Ugh. I can’t believe we lost Gotay to the Braves of all people. Should have never chanced putting him on waivers :(

    • Hi Met fan in Philly… I’m around Philly so I can relate, haha.

Gotay to the Braves? Blah. Well maybe he’ll take the Julio Franco approach and never play.

  16. diehard says:

    GOTAY=KAZMIR!!!

  17. gem779 says:

wtf, Gotay to the Braves, wtf…he is BETTER than Tatis!!!………….

  18. runnin rebel says:

Who cares what kind of leg kick El ” I have had a lousy, drama-filled spring breako” is doing.” He needs to really just needs to piss or get off the pot because its “go time”. None wants to hear his problems during the full season.

El needs to stop thinking so selfishly as well. Who cares what he thinks. He should be doing what the Mets tell him without any lip service. They have been more patient with him than anyone else on that team this winter.

If the Mets start losing this year because of his self serving ways, they are going to be losing some fan base. You can take that to Vegas.
