pmLinks: Santana Q&A, Schneider, Glavine
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 28, 2008 11:10 am

In Newsday, David Lennon conducts an outstanding Q&A with Johan Santana, who talks about his days playing center field; his switch to pitching; baseball as a business and a job; living in New York City; and, of course, his change-up - among other things.

Also in Newsday, Anthony Rieber talks with Brian Schneider, who has worked hard to get to know his new pitching staff over the last 10 days.

In the Daily News and New York Times, Tom Glavine talks about his days with the Braves, then with the Mets and again with the Braves.

I hope the Mets pound Glavine the way the Braves used to.

    some notes from Adam Rubin:

The Mets team buses leave Port St. Lucie behind at 9:45 a.m., headed for Fort Lauderdale and a final Grapefruit League game against the Orioles, then the airport for tomorrow’s Civil Rights Game against the White Sox in Memphis.

    • In a slap-in-the-face moment, Brady Clark has yet to be told he hasn’t made the team, yet his bats are the only ones not loaded.

    • Billy Wagner, Jorge Sosa and Matt Wise will pitch in Jupiter in a Triple-A game today to give the Grapefruit League innings to Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey.

    • The Mets will leave behind Opening Day starter Johan Santana and Game 2 starter Pedro Martinez but will otherwise take their entire team to Memphis.

    • Steven Register was told to hang out at the hotel in Port St. Lucie, since the Mets were still trying to pursue a trade for him.

  3. Nate W. says:

The lack of Clark leaves a bench spot for someone, but if it isnt Gotay then who is left? I guess Pagan has made the team despite his .250 BA in the second half of the spring.

Casanova, M. Anderson, Easley, Tatis, and Endy/Pagan.

Rubins’ article should be called “Memories, like opposing batters, hit Tom Glavine hard”

Can the Mets even attempt to get younger? Can they just humor me and keep someone on the team who’s under 30?

  6. Nate W. says:

A run in the 8th inning brought the B-Mets closer but not close enough as they fell 4-1 to The Harrisburg Senators on Thursday. This loss brought the B-Mets record to 3-4-4 in Spring Training.

Shortstop Jose Coronado led off the 8th with a double and was quickly advanced to third on a wild pitch. He was brought home when Ignacio Medrano grounded out to the Harrisburg Shortstop. Medrano, the B-Mets Third Baseman, finished the game 2-3.

The B-Mets manage nine hits in the game despite only scoring the one run. First Baseman Mike Carp went 1-3 with a double. As the Designated Hitter, Daniel Murphy went 2-4. The B-Mets Center Fielder Ambiorix Concepcion and Right Fielder Raul Reyes both went 1-3. Salomon Manriquez went 1-4 in the Catcher’s role.

Jose Sanchez took the loss for the B-Mets last 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs and 3 walks with 6 hits. Nick Abel threw 1 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed one earned run on two hits, one walk and a strikeout. Brandon Nall and Eddie Kunz pitched the 8th and 9th innings respectively, both allowing two hits. Nall struck out one batter while Kunz recorded 2 K’s.

I’m suprised Concepcion was in center, he played rightfield for the Cyclones and he had a canon for an arm, and I’m not exaggerating. Reyes had played center for the Cyclones and didnt show that kind of arm to me.

It was an inter-league matchup on Thursday as the New Orleans Zephyrs took on the International League’s Columbus Clippers and won 8-4.

Zephyrs pitcher Ruddy Lugo got the win. Enrique Cruz had two hits and two RBI for the Zephyrs. First baseman Michel Abreu had one hit and two RBI as well. Infielder Argenis Reyes also recorded two hits for the Z’s.

I really liked the Santana article… he seems like an all around great guy. He’ll be very easy to root for. =)

    Mets Weekly:

This is really a reply to the next blog item, but for some reason the Comments section is closed (I hate when Matt does that!).

Well, I have to say I am disappointed with Joselyn Pierce. She is a pretty woman, but seems overwelmed. Julie Donaldson owned the position. She was a presence on the show. I am not talking about her beauty (she is a hottie (and Joselyn is attractive as well, that is not it), I am talking how she carried herself. Her confidence was apparent in her body language and the sound of her voice.

Jocelyn, at least so far, seems not so confident. She does not carry a segment, but rather gets swept along. She seems less polished, which makes the show more like a home movie rather than a professional SNY-NY Mets piece.

I am not meaning to bash her. Perhaps she will grow in to the position and role. I am just saying based on the initial show, she has a long way to go.

Sure I miss Julie, but I am open to Jocelyn. She just needs to step it up. Hope she does, and soon.
