Note: Thank You for Yesterday
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 1, 2008 11:16 am

…so, a lot of people showed up to Butterfield 8 yesterday for the MetsBlog Opening Day Happy Hour…seriously, it was a zoo…i would guess there were at least 150 fans inside…it was body to body…but such a great enviornment…lots of Mets gear, lots of noise, lots of chanting…it was very exciting…

…writing this site can be an odd experience, in that i tend to forget people actually read it…i mean, i see the statistics…but, at the end of a normal day, i just sat here and banged away at a keybaord for several hours…it’s not like i see thousands of readers sitting outside of my office window…so, when i get to actually see a large group of fans in person, most all of whom read the site, get together, unite and cheer the team on, it’s special to me…

…i’d like to thank you for reading, and for coming down to the Happy Hour…i expect to do more of these events during the year, no doubt…

…also, thank you, Butterfield 8, for hosting…it was a bit crowded, but i bet that’s a good thing

I’m not sure how much effort goes into organizing these events, but you should do them more often, if possible…yesterday was a blast, and the perfect was to bring in the new season.

*perfect way to bring in the new season

        • The Flesh says:

        • kowalski69 says:

  2. dykstraw says:

actually, you might be able to see me outside your office window.

awesome time, thanks for holding it, and thank you johan for making it a happy occasion!

  3. DjDeF says:

I am shocked that cerrone actually has an office. If it was me I would be on the couch with some cheese doodles on my shirt and a laptop on my…well lap.

  4. Volume11 says:

Did everyone complain about every single little thing every single Met from player to staff to the Big WIllie did yesterday?

    • Joe Bacci says:

Not at all… the mood was totally optimistic and full of Rally Cries and Chants and Cheers. It was an event that made me proud to be a Met fan.

  5. toomanyuniforms says:

Would love to have a similar event in DC. Anybody organizing that? I guess it wouldn’t necessarily need “organization”, but if there’s a Met-friendly establishment out there that anyone knows about. . . .

  6. Joe Bacci says:

Awesome time last night, i can’t wait to do it again… but i think we need a bigger venue.

  7. DjDeF says:

I am surprised matt even has an office. I would imagine myself sitting on the couch the laptop on a snack table watching tv.

    • dykstraw says:

he is big time now. i often see him tossing packs of sourpatch kids to the mets throngs huddled below.

  8. cousinrk says:

It was a lot of fun, thanks Matt. Seriously it was like being at the game. When the lineup was announced you got cheers as each player was presented, you got the Jose Jose Jose chants, and when a Yankee fan walked in, you got the Yankees S..k among other chants I can’t write on a family blog. It was great. So much fun, can’t wait for the next event.

  9. ghobot says:

did any of the footage sny get at butterfield on tv last night?

    • johanbelievable says:

i thought a saw a bunch of you guys when they showed a crowd of fat dudes wearing marlins jerseys dancing around lol

  10. Jova1931 says:

So does anyone else get as upset as I do when Reyes gets called out when he’s obviously safe? I wonder if anyone reacted negatively at the bar to this.

    • Metslvr says:

Wasn’t at bar, but hubby and I were plenty pissed when Reyes got robbed of his stolen base.

On way home yesterday from work…get out at 4 and made mad dash home to make it for the first pitch….I did it too!! anyway…on 980 am I had the pre-game on…not sure who the announcer was but he said, and I think I’m getting the quote right, “There is something definitly strange here at Dolphin Stadium. ……….People!! Granted, most are Mets fans, but there they are!!!” Thankfully I was on one of the back streets and was in no risk of hitting anyone or anything cuz had I been in traffic, there most definitely would have been a wreck. I was laughing way too hard….

      • Jova1931 says:

lol That’s pretty funny. I ran home from work too and of course my train had plenty of delays but I made it just in time for the Mets batting order.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Eh, it’s usually pretty arbitrary. Reyes PCT has been pretty low since last August, I think. He seemed to get caught a lot in ST, too, unless I’m imagining things. Maybe he needs Rickey back.

  11. MrMcD says:

Great event! Cerrone should set these up for all significant away games for the whole season.

  12. robmenna says:

No props for the bartender?? My face was as red as Joe Smith’s.

    • saltzy007 says:

      Props on ALL the bartenders…

The one in the back and the one in the Wright jersey were SPECTACULAR….

Nice bar…I plan on attending alot during the season. Its ridiculous that Mets bars are so few and far between in NYC…$3 beers dont hurt either….

  13. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

I got caught up at work and had to watch the game from a bar closer to my office.

I second the idea that this should be a more regular get together (just do it for night games more often, and not on Tues/Fri home games b/c that’s the ticket package I have).

Anyone know of anything for Opening Day? I live in the upper east but a Mets fan bartender near where I live told me that Woodside is a good option.

  14. kowalski69 says:

    Wall St. Mets Fan,

The Dugout is one bar that is more pro-Mets than Yankees and it is right off the 7 train in Woodside 61st. I’ll be there before the game.

There are 7 bars in walking distance also (2 blocks). Cukoo’s Nest, Donovans, Sean Ogs…

  15. Seaver41 says:

I’m a New York-born, diehard Mets fan who just moved to Savannah, Ga. from San Diego. I’m looking for other Mets fans in Savannah and to see if any meetups are planned this weekend in Atlanta. My wife and I are driving up there for Saturday’s and Sunday’s games.

  16. ericbop says:

Absolutely awesome game, and really great meet-up event, Matt! I was the one crazy enough to bring my 3 year old, but even he had a great time! (I don’t think he’s given out that many high-fives in his life).

I’d also like to second the question raised above (since they filmed my kid, too) – any idea when the Butterfield8 footage airs?

    thanks again,
    Eric

  17. MinayaOmar says:

Sounds like everyone had a blast. I will definitely make it to the next gathering. And bring some pro-Mets friends…

  18. thegloaming says:

as someone who has lived in woodside, there is no need to travel to any bar in that neighborhood to see a Mets game, unless you live on the 7 line. Woodside is a pretty much a dump by the time you get to 61 St.

    • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

I was thinking of a place to pre-game on the way to the game. I don’t know why there isn’t a better of selection of places to go around the stadium.

      • Jova1931 says:

I was going to suggest a Poland Springs bottle filled with cognac. It works well when on the train and it’s cost effective!

        • saltzy007 says:

          Cognac? Sheesh…

Sounds like a Championship Level Yankees fan….

        • Jova1931 says:

Hey now, no need for the low blow.
I’ve done this a few times on the way to Merengue Night.

  19. kowalski69 says:

hmm you really dont know? Perhaps one of the junkyards has a bottle of E&J in their cabinet, but other than that.. dude =\
