…not since Dwight Gooden do i recall the feeling of confidence i had yesterday when Johan Santana stood on the mound…yes, i’m confident when Pedro Martinez is on the mound, but i am also holding my breath the entire time because i fear he will soon fall
apart…with johan, though, who is in tremendous shape, and who is in such command of what is happening in the game, i feel very relaxed and in control as a fan…and i like it…it borders on cocky, which i need to be mindful of…
…what’s more, with santana, pedro, John Maine and Oliver Perez, i am quite confident the Mets will be able to avoid the type of long, painful losing streaks that hit hard in June and September of last season…do you remember the slide in June, dear god it was awful…it felt like it would never end…also, go back and look at the match ups…it seemed like the Mets were forced to face the opposing team’s ace in every series, while throwing Orlando Hernandez and Jorge Sosa in response…it was relentless…this season, though, they can combat such a run with johan, pedro, perez and maine, who i feel is going to have a huge season for this team…
…the point is, if a losing streak gets started, it will most certainly be stopped sooner than later…with johan, pedro, maine and perez, the Mets have a pretty reliable firewall, which is something i am just not used to as a Mets fan…and i like it…

It’s been about, oh, 22 years since the Mets had a rotation that I have this much confidence in.
I feel we have the best starting pitching staff in the NL if not all of baseball.
rival NL rotation:
Arizona – Webb, Haren, Doug Davis, Micah Owings… big dropoff after the 1-2 punch
rival AL rotation:
Red Sox – as good as lester and bucholz are they are still very unproven at the major league level
Red Sox – Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Wakefield, Bucholz
How could you leave out Wang and Pett… aww i can’t even finish I’m laughing too hard!
Spot on, man…it was an entirely alien feeling to truly believe our guy was going to dominate from the first pitch.
Lovin it.
cerrone you just made this so much sweeter. great point raised, i dont see us losing more than 5 in a row this year.
Santana’s a bulldog, a gamer.
Matt –
You were nervous each time pedro came to the mound 2.5 years ago when he was 15-8 with a 2.82 ERA and 208 Ks?
We look good on paper but let’s relax…we beat the worst team in the division and it one game…would this post be the same if the offense did nothing yesterday or if Johan got shelled?
Pedro is still a wild card and Perez is still wild….
true and true, and also I am biased, but when I try to be objective and look at all 30 rotations in baseball, I can’t find one that I don’t think has bigger question marks 1-5 than the Mets.
jtcuse,
Its ok to be happy after opening day. The ifs you bring up are moot they didn’t happen. He didn’t get shelled.
Don’t go pissing in our collective Cheerios.
Thank you
Agreed. They did not happen. Believe me I am very happy but let’s not order the World Series rings just yet…Pedro and Perez are still question marks not to mention the five hole…Again, we beat a AAA team….
how is pedro a question mark?
And the Phillthies coudn’t beat the Nats, arguably an AAAA team, and the Braves couldn’t beat either the Nats or the NL Central’s AAA squad, the Pirates.
Yes, it’s early, but I kinda like these trends.
One thing that really caught my eye with Johan, was that he is a really good athlete. He was running around on defense very quick for a pitcher. Even beating out Delgado to one ball. I did get nervous everytime I saw him sprinting around though, real afraid of something going wrong and really no reason to do so.
That rotation is why the Mets should be expected to make the world series. Nothing is more stable on a baseball team than a starting rotation. We just gotta hope we have no severe injuries to it and Perez doesn’t crack under the pressure of a contract year
Is this metsblog???????….i dont think i have heard one negative reaction to Matt yet….optimism is nice but we still have 161 regular season games to go—–
thats the power of johan my friend
Those were the days with Dr. K! He would just shut people down in the mid 80’s. I have to admit, i felt confident with Frank Viola for awhile, boy did he change that in a hurry. I feel confident with Johan like Dr K now after watching that first start.
yeah these guys are nice but im really going to miss brian lawrence.
APRIL FOOLS!
LOL!
Worst. Joke. Everrrrrr…..
This is the most excited I have ever been for the second game of the season.
ESPN just put up a stat, Pedro’s career numbers in April, 35-8, 2.58 ERA-DAMN!!!!!!! Just stay healthy Petey baby- I know its not ‘98 but I can only imagine a healthy Johan, Pedro, & Maine all year.
And, the Post had another set of stats: Pedro is 6-6 lifetime against the Marlins, but 5-2 against them in Miami. Must be the added humidity.
Someone at Butterfield8 yesterday was trying to make the argument that Santana is the best Mets pitcher since either Cone or Viola. No way.
Definitely Doc.
Are we discussing career or active while with the Mets?
It is terrific, but I wouldn’t compare them to ‘86/’88 just yet. Give it month or two to shake out. No reason to set unrealistic expectations.
On Matt’s point, in terms of fan confidence, yeah, things sure feel better now than they did when we were wondering how it was that Rick Reed could continue to be a serviceable starter.
I think it is ok to both share the enthusiasm for what will be a great starting rotation when healthy and the optimism for a truly successful season without having to hear guys downgrade it. No one above said we are a lock for the division title and that we are certain to head to the world series.
But certainly the feeling after yesterday is that with an ace like Santana followed by an ace like Pedro coupled with 2 addl starts out of very solid Maine and often solid Perez … losing streaks should be hard to come by.
We may be able to win 90 games…even 95 – 100 if things break right and health stays on our side.
This team is better than last years which took a huge unprecedented collapse to lose the divisiion and still won 88 games. It is not a stretch to say we should exceed the 88 wins we had last year if the starting rotation stays healthy for most of their required starts.
I’m a 33y/o Met fan and the best Met pitcher iv’e seen in his prime was Coney. I wasn’t following baseball closely in ‘85 so I can’t ever say I saw Doc at his best. Unfortunately he was never as good after that. He was very good don’t get me wrong, but IMO the best guy I ever saw in his prime w/ the filthiest stuff was Coney. He was something else. All his pitches were A+ pitches. I mean when he was on he could dominate with a mid 90s FB, great curve, great slider, great Splitter. Man I loved Coney.
Twinkies fan here……… I’m excited to see Johan had a decent outing last night and he will only get better. Good point above about long loosing streaks in that you now have a legit stopper of them. Got to watch Johan do it over and over with the Twins – It’s like he’s on a mission and slams the door. Most entertaining to watch hitters look silly on his changeup. On the flip side, Go Go Gomez had a breakout game last night – very exciting player to say the least. Hope the trade works out for both sides and so far, so good.
You called it Matt. Pedro just fell apart.
You JINXED US!!! No Pedro will be out with a pilled left ham string. You called it, only 4 innings into 2008 and he is allready hurt :{
