Twinkies fan here......... I'm excited to see Johan had a decent outing last night and he will only get better. Good point above about long loosing streaks in that you now have a legit stopper of them. Got to watch Johan do it over and over with the Twins - It's like he's on a mission and slams the door. Most entertaining to watch hitters look silly on his changeup. On the flip side, Go Go Gomez had a breakout game last night - very exciting player to say the least. Hope the trade works out for both sides and so far, so good.

I'm a 33y/o Met fan and the best Met pitcher iv'e seen in his prime was Coney. I wasn't following baseball closely in '85 so I can't ever say I saw Doc at his best. Unfortunately he was never as good after that. He was very good don't get me wrong, but IMO the best guy I ever saw in his prime w/ the filthiest stuff was Coney. He was something else. All his pitches were A+ pitches. I mean when he was on he could dominate with a mid 90s FB, great curve, great slider, great Splitter. Man I loved Coney.

I think it is ok to both share the enthusiasm for what will be a great starting rotation when healthy and the optimism for a truly successful season without having to hear guys downgrade it. No one above said we are a lock for the division title and that we are certain to head to the world series.

But certainly the feeling after yesterday is that with an ace like Santana followed by an ace like Pedro coupled with 2 addl starts out of very solid Maine and often solid Perez ... losing streaks should be hard to come by.

We may be able to win 90 games...even 95 - 100 if things break right and health stays on our side.

This team is better than last years which took a huge unprecedented collapse to lose the divisiion and still won 88 games. It is not a stretch to say we should exceed the 88 wins we had last year if the starting rotation stays healthy for most of their required starts.

It is terrific, but I wouldn't compare them to '86/'88 just yet. Give it month or two to shake out. No reason to set unrealistic expectations.

On Matt's point, in terms of fan confidence, yeah, things sure feel better now than they did when we were wondering how it was that Rick Reed could continue to be a serviceable starter.

Someone at Butterfield8 yesterday was trying to make the argument that Santana is the best Mets pitcher since either Cone or Viola. No way.

Definitely Doc.

And, the Post had another set of stats: Pedro is 6-6 lifetime against the Marlins, but 5-2 against them in Miami. Must be the added humidity.
