postGame: Mets 13 Marlins 0
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 2, 2008 10:06 pm

The Mets (2–1) defeated the Marlins (1–2) by the score of 13 to 0 in Miami tonight.

For a boxscore, and recap, go to Yahoo!.

Oliver Perez looked outstanding…he pitched six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out eight…his slider was terrific, changing speeds, and all around the zone…again, the bullpen stepped in, looked great and protected perez’s shutout…

…hey, Ryan Church, you have a nice arm…as shown in the first inning when he pegged Hanley Ramirez trying to stretch a single in to a double that he bounced off the wall in right…of course, had hanley initially been running hard he would have been safe, but he lollygagged a bit…and church gunned him down…which is good, because hanley would have scored on the ball that skipped by Carlos Beltran a few batters later with two outs…

….the Marlins can complain about payroll all they want, but until their best young players stop kicking the ball around and running the bases like a Little League team, it’s sort of hard to take that argument seriously

…oh, and church hit a home run off a left-handed pitcher…i thought he couldn’t hit lefties, though…odd…

…speaking of beltran, he was robbed of a home run…the ball, which clearly bounced off the railing in center field, was initially called a home run…however, with beltran back on the bench, after having rounded the bases, all four umps gathered on the infield and reversed the call…look, even without instant replay, logic should dictate that any ball bouncing directly 20 feet up in the air had to have done so by ricocheting off metal, not the padded wall…unreal…come on, blue…

…early in the game, SNY’s Keith Hernandez said, “Every time we play the Marlins,” after which he corrected himself and said, “I mean, when the Mets play the Marlins.”…of course, later in the game, when asked by a caller if he would wear a Mets hat if accepted in to the Hall of Fame, he hesitated, gave pause while considering the Cardinals equal to the Mets, after which he said, ‘The Mets,’ because blue is his favorite color…dude, you’re calling Mets games, just say Mets

…by the way, i am not sure how i feel about this in-game phone call idea…i want to like it, because it gets us, the fans, more involved in the game…but it just feels so awkward, even during a blow-out game like tonight…again, it’s going to work great during a rain delay…but during the game, something just seems off…i’m speculating here, but i sense a bit of displeasure in Gary Cohen’s voice while answering the calls as well, though i could be wrong…

…it was nice to see Carlos Delgado rip an opposite-field, RBI single off a left-handed pitcher, who was trying to bust him inside…he stayed in the box, steady, and went the other way…

…once again, Angel Pagan drove in a run…he has driven in a run in all three games this season…this time, driving in Carlos Beltran from third with a double down the left-field line…

…welcome to the Mets, Nelson Figueroa, who pitched a perfect eighth inning…nicely done…

….Jose Reyes essentially put the game away with a quick-hands, two-RBI double in the sixth, but David Wright really put it away with a bomb, and i mean bomb, of a home run later in the inning…willie even smiled as wright jogged around the bases

the name of the game is: win the series…that’s what counts…nice rebound, Mets…

    161-1 or bust!

this joke has been used way to much!

    • MaCkTiC. says:

logic should dictate that any ball bouncing directly 20 feet up in the air had to have done so by ricocheting off metal, not the padded wall…unreal…come on, blue…

      I WAS SCREAMING SAME THING!

  2. Mookie 1986 says:

David is lookin rather sugary lately.

Lovin the early MVP chants by Mets fans in the Marlins house.

It don’t get no betta den dat.

    • gomets6091 says:

Wright woulda had 2 HRs in any other park tonight (and 1 last night in many parks)….I’m feeling this is the year he makes “the leap” and hits close to 40 HRs

  3. Deaner says:

Beltran and Wright look pretty freakin motivated
    Church looks ready to rock
Reyes looks better, esp. after that 2 rbi double
    Pagan looks sharp
    Even Delgado is looking better.
Schneider looks patient at the plate and makes productive outs.

Pitching is looking great, sans one pitch from Wise

    • m00kie says:

another great team win.. these guys look determined, they look ready. Losing Pedro only enhanced that determination from the looks of last night

  4. Steal Home Jose! says:

The Nationals are undefeated! When do we start rooting against them when they play the Phillies and Braves!?!?!?

    • metzelaar says:

I’d say now. I’d hate for them to go something like 10-4 at the expense of beating up the Phils and Braves, which I think we’re capable of doing ourselves.

      • stickguy says:

let them go. If the Mets and Nats both go 10-4 against the Braves and Phils, I can live with it!

    • gomets6091 says:

I like the Nats and think they’re building a solid foundation, but they’re still a year or two at least from really competing. They’ve gotten some nice pitching so far, but there’s no way it holds up. Their offense is very underrated though: I made it a point to target Nats in my fantasy league, b/c a bunch of them are gonna have breakout years going from cavernous RFK to the new more hitter friendly park.

      • Nate W. says:

yup, and there is no way their pitching staff lasts the whole year. There just isnt enough depth in quality arms, so let them get as many wins as they can against the Braves and Phils.

    • Steal Home Jose! says:

They should create a “Sarcasm” font button right next to the italics, bold and underline.

I’m not worried about the Nationals. But unlike the kids in Minnesota, I really want to see Milledge and LoDuca do badly. I wouldn’t have thought that a couple of months ago, but now…screw em…

      • gomets6091 says:

sorry, I meant to reply to the guy below you who said he actually would be worried about the Nats going 10-4…I knew you were being sarcastic.

      • metzelaar says:

I’m pulling for Milledge, but not Lo Duca.

Didn’t know you were being sarcastic, but I don’t think it’s too crazy to worry a bit about the Nationals. They have a good line-up and a good bullpen, the former of which will perform much better in the new park. If they get some surprises in their rotation, they could be a real pain.

  5. washtiger says:

Nice to have a laugher this early in the year. Don’t recall too many of those last season. Way to go Ollie, and some nice hitting from Wright and Beltran, plus the newcomers — Church, Schneider, and Pagan.

    • metzelaar says:

Pagan deserves MAD props for what he’s done this series. Keep it up, man.

Just imagine if this kid turns into the real deal this season.

    • gomets6091 says:

we DID have a laugher against this same team the 2nd to last game of the season. Hopefully the Mets come out a little better in the next game than they did last time.

  6. Jayperez says:

    sooo…no power huh…..
The mets put out a hit clinic today. Total smackdown. Glad to see the killer instinct guys keep it up. Good job to OP for showing he can handle the 3rd spot…today. Lets bring that momentum to the braves who are starting off a little slow.

    Lets get em METS

  7. Wheelhouse19 says:

Solid effort all around tonight. Lets all keep in check, that it IS the Marlins, but more than anything….Perez looked great. Command was there too.

I’d love to see Delagdo hit a few more to the warning track, I’m worried about his power, but he is taking a few more pitches….so thats good.

Rest up and save the bats boys…..gets much harder Friday night.

  8. pedros rooster says:

    Get well soon, Pedro.

  9. metzelaar says:

GREAT win. And I mean great. Especially after that loss last night.

What makes this even better is that Perez was pitching, and we get to throw our under-the-radar ace Maine out there for the Braves series. Can’t wait.

  10. mdemaio says:

Wright also crushed the ball he hit for a double – he’s locked in. I know it’s early, but there’s definitely seems to be a different vibe to this team so far…it seems to have a chip on its shoulder, in a good way. They look like they’re not out to just beat teams, but to beat them up. Nice to see…

    • Deaner says:

      Agreed

and that will be amplified when alou comes back as he was pretty vocal about being pissed and saying they had unfinished business.

      • metzelaar says:

        Alou’s only unfinished business is:

        - a pulled hammy
        - a strained quad
        - a bunion

        • Deaner says:

yeah, and a 32 game hitting streak, or did you forget about that?

        • metzelaar says:

I’m talking about this season, pal. I hope you don’t seriously think Alou is going to play healthy the rest of the season after he comes back. He has a few more injuries waiting in the wings.

Alou is great, but it’s almost comical how often and easily he gets injured.

  11. wolverine193 says:

I know we’re all concerned about Pedro, but really, every pitcher has looked fantastic BUT him.

  12. retire17 says:

Mets would have won 15-0 if they still had Gotay.

  13. RIPmurph says:

…by the way, i am not sure how i feel about this in-game phone call idea…i want to like it, because it gets us, the fans, more involved in the game…but it just feels so awkward, even during a blow-out game like tonight…again, it’s going to work great during a rain delay…but during the game, something just seems off…i’m speculating here, but i sense a bit of displeasure in Gary Cohen’s voice while answering the calls as well, though i could be wrong…

I couldn’t agree more. There’s no place for that during the game. I guess during a blowout it’s not so bad, and obviously to kill time in a rain delay, but if it’s a close game and I have to hear a bunch of morons call in and ask idiotic questions that neither Keith nor Ron could really give two sh*ts about…well, let’s just say I won’t be too happy.

    • Mookie 1986 says:

Phone calls to the booth during games… always a bad idea.

But hey, “Turn Ahead the Clock Night” was a total winner! Bring back the Future Mets!

      Loved those unis.

    • itsmetsforme says:

while we’re at it get rid of all idiotic in-game interviews across the board.

      • BlueTrane says:

I love Ollie, but he is the WORST interview ever….

        • Necciai27 says:

The anti-Juan Padilla. Ollie is wworst interview, but I think Juan Padilla, if he makes his way back, is EASILY the best. Remember during ST 2007 when Kevin Burkhardt interviewed him on the sidelines and he said…

“You know Kevin, it’s just so depressing when you’re injured; on the DL. You have to watch a game you know you could be participating in when healthy and yet you have the knowledge that you’re just not capable of participating. I’d really like to get out there and play.”

I was floored. And not one “you know” throughout.

If Padilla scraps his career as a pitcher, he should consider either becoming a broadcaster or a TV or radio baseball analyst. Or a speechwriter for a CEO or politician.

        • gomets6091 says:

          ummm…he led off with a “you know”……just saying ;)

        • Necciai27 says:

Ugh…I saw that as soon as I posted the comment and knew someone would bust my behind for it. Still…point stands, dude is and was extremely literate. And he used the words “you know” in just about their only correct context. ;)

        • metzelaar says:

I tried cutting “you know” and ‘like” out of my vocabulary recently, and it’s next to impossible. If that’s really how the interview went, it’s really impressive.

    • gomets6091 says:

as awful as the Marlins broadcasters are, I kinda like the “e-mail the booth” thing they do. It gets the fans involved without the awkwardness of, well, actually getting the fans involved. Plus they can just sorta pull out an e-mail anytime there’s a slow point in the game.

  14. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Can’t wait to see Johnny on Friday!!! Like I’ve been saying, in my opinion, Ollie’s got more upside than Johnny…

    LGM.

  15. marvelousmarv says:

Great game but watch us come up with a goose egg on Friday after this blow out. But lets stop with the Wright MVP chants. We are all Met fans here, we know that Mets do not win MVPs. Almost 50 yrs and no MVPs. Just like we dont have a no-hitter. It wasnt meant to be.

But baseball tonight just did a lil story on B.Bannister. How I would love to have him back!!! And where in the world is BURGOS.

    • MaCkTiC. says:

Great game tonight by the Mets!!!!!

      Nice recap Matt.

    • Mookie 1986 says:

Burgos is at home counting his money.

And let’s not get all pessimistic 3 games into the season. Cmon, man.

Talkin bout droppin zeros and Bannister… totally dragging me down.

      • RIPmurph says:

Wait till Milledge has a 20/20 season and Humber wins 10-15 games with an ERA under 4 for the Twins.

        • gomets6091 says:

wait until Carlos Zambrano injures himself reaching for a ring ding. Wait until Kris Benson gives up 13 runs in his Phillies debut. Wait until Jorge Julio gives up a walk-off homerun. Wait until Xavier Nady….actually, I’m gonna leave that one alone. But you get the point: you win some, you lose some. We just won 13-0 behind performances from guys like Perez and Church, Minaya acquisitions.

  16. metsin080910 says:

Time for all the Church, Schneider haters to shut-up. Church is seeing the ball well as is Schneider. Delgado looks to be more patient up at the plate which is a good sign. Beltran and Wright are going to have monster years. Reyes is the catalyst of this team and he will excel.

Pitching is looking great, I feel bad that Pedro can’t be a part of it right now but he will be back. Bullpen is looking strong. Other than the Pedro injury, every Met fan should be happy about how this team looks.

Remember last year we didn’t have a game like this until the second to last game when Maine pitched the game of his life. Good to see the Mets putting up so many runs this early in the year. I honestly think that they are going to shut up all the people that criticize the offense.

Now we need Maine to look good followed by Pelf and we are ready to cruise hit cruise control.

Oh damn, I forgot, the Nats are in first.

    • m00kie says:

it was funny last night during the call-ins when the guy tried to bash the milledge trade .. after watching (or not?) church have a great game, and schneider’s defense/pitcher handling the last 3 nights, the guys in the booth put him in his place on that one. I have been really impressed with Schneider’s pitch calling and ability to keep his pitchers focused. Last night there was a point early in the game where Ollie had to run to first, the runner was safe, and he still had to get another out…Schneider backed him off a few times and made him focus before he let him throw a pitch, and Ollie came back and eventually struckout Hanley to keep the shutout…that’s the kind of catcher we needed..He’s awake, aware, and very focused back there. Nice to see him get into the offensive action out there too. Church has looked great in RF, and was killing the ball last night. He put a hurting on that hanging slider!

  17. Mingo says:

The key part about tonight was three things.

First the Mets simply didn’t have a game this good last year. Everyone contributed and in every way as well.

Second, the Mets are showing that they learned some lessons from last year. None of them are giving away at bats or taking anything for granted. If they keep this up all year, they will get past 100 wins as a minimum.

Third, the Mets last year would have gotten down after the Pedro news. But they had to prove to themselves and to us that adversity will only make them stronger. This victory was needed tonight for them to believe in themselves. This is an early test whether they were going to be down after last year’s collapse or whether they would recover in the right way.

    • RIPmurph says:

Calm down a bit man. Over 100 wins minimum? They didn’t win 100 two years ago when they had that phenomenal season, and the Braves and Phillies weren’t nearly as good then as they are now. Let’s see how things play out here. Just win series. And don’t get too excited about wins over teams like the Marlins, who have a payroll lower than Alex Rodriguez’ salary.

    • ravi3 says:

whoa..thats a bit lofty…you should at least temper that expectation to 95 win minimum, but even then……

  18. farb09 says:

the best thing that i took away from this series is that church can really hit. the guy has a beautiful swing and a pretty solid approach, and his bomb tonight was against a lefty curveball, which is obviously a great sign. everybody talks about the bottom of the lineup as a liability, and it still might be, because schneider and pagan aren’t exactly offensive studs. but church has the ability to put up some real numbers.

    • RIPmurph says:

Agreed. Church hit 15 HR and hit about .275 in about 450 AB last year, IIRC. If he gets 650 AB this year, maybe he puts up 20 HR, hits .270-.280, and drives in around 80. I’ll take that out of the 7-hole any day.

      • gomets6091 says:

not to mention 43 doubles: that’s an incredible number. He was 7 doubles behind the league leader playing basically 3/4 of a season. And that came playing his home games at cavernous RFK: I expect his doubles to go down a bit but his homers to go up over 20 this year.

…by the way, I can’t ever remember acquiring players who had decent offensive numbers and expecting Shea to actually give them a BOOST. Even Dodger Stadium wasn’t as bad a hitters park as RFK. I will not miss that place.

      • hyperion4 says:

I hope he doesn’t get 650 ABs this year. That would mean he never takes a walk.

        • RIPmurph says:

650 AB is a reasonable estimate for a guy who plays everyday for an entire season, and he’ll still have 50-70 walks I’d say. The number may be a little high since he hits down in the order, but it’s not too far off.

  19. Wheelhouse19 says:

I am impressed with Church so far. He has a real good swing, and is a power threat. Also has a cannon I wasn’t aware of.

Pagan is a nice surprise, but we all know when Alou gets back, Pagan takes a seat. Speaking of which….any word on Alou’s return? If he can stay healthy and in the lineup….I really like how it looks, especially if Church is batting 7. Thats a real nice look.

If Pelfrey can be OK, I’m fine with the starting rotation. Beltran and Wright need to continue raking. Pen looks good also….guys are throwing hard

    • RIPmurph says:

Well, Pelfrey won’t be OK, because he sucks, but we’ll still be alright regardless. We’ll piece it together with a 4-man, Sosa, El Duque, and whatever else needs to be done until Pedro gets back, and even then we may have to bring in another arm. But don’t count on Pelfrey. We’ve been down that road before, and he just isn’t that good.

    • irish_eagle says:

I’ve seen this word “raking” used a couple of times. I’m not sure of its meaning in this context. The first time I saw it I thought it had to do with defense, but now I think it’s hitting.

      Can you help?

  20. dykstraw says:

    it should have been 14-0!

  21. Wheelhouse19 says:

By the way….if anyone wants to get really fired up and pissed take a trip over to ajc.com What a bunch of losers on that site.

Theres comments everywhere with “Mutts” and how we now have a 1 man rotation, Santana and pray for a monsoon, etc.

Did they forget about Perez who onws them, and Maine also?
What idiots down there in Georgia.

I really hope the Mets crush them this weekend. I’m starting to hate the Braves more than the Yankees….and its because of their fans.

    • Deaner says:

      Smoltz–DL
      Hampton–Relevant in 2000
      Glavine–See Hampton
      Jo Jo Reyes –Uhhhh
      Chuck James–See Jo Jo Reyes

    • RIPmurph says:

You should always hate the Braves, or any in-league rival, more than the Yankees. Don’t give the Yankeefans the pleasure of hating them. Indifference stings even more than hatred.

      • gomets6091 says:

the Yankees are like a permanent searing hatred for me, my hatred of NL East teams fluctuates based on how good they are and how good the Mets are. I never really cared about the Phillies, but now they’re far and away my most hated team. I always hated the Braves a lot, but it subsided a bit the last 2 years. That said, I rooted for the Braves against the Yankees in ‘99 b/c I’m an NL fan, and because I always respected their big 3 pitchers (well, until game 162 last year, anyway). In ‘96 I didnt know well enough to hate the Yankees yet and actually rooted for them because I thought it was good for NY.

        • RIPmurph says:

LOL. I rooted for that ‘96 Yankee team too. Little did I know it would turn out to be the beginning of a dynasty. I’ll never make that mistake again.

        • irish_eagle says:

You guys must be young. Clearly you don’t remember how much the Yankees and, especially their fans, deserved hating during late 70s and early 80s.

        • m00kie says:

I was taught at an early age that rooting against the Yankees is of prime importance…My family rooted against the yankees (and for the dodgers) long before there were any Mets. That’s bled into a bit of a Red Sox affinity for me..anytime they win I feel like that’s a blow to the Yanks.

    • metsin080910 says:

I hear enough from Philly fans over at sport-boards.net

There are some boneheads over there.

  22. KinersKornerman says:

Hey, that’s good. Let the ATL think that. We all know how overconfidence can trip you up. Let them think anything they want.

Let’s keep hiding in the bushes, and pounce when we get the chance.

    • astoriametsfan72 says:

exactly. let Braves crow on about Glavine and his 80mph fastball, a shallow and VERY questionable bullpen.

But at the end of the day, there are three areas the Mets are better than the Braves:

      1) Defense. Mets have the best up the middle defense in the NL, perhaps in baseball. They are a VERY good defensive team. With the Braves, Escobar is unproven at this point and has some issues with his throwing. I’ll take Castillo’s defense over Johnson’s every day of the week. And don’t even talk about the centerfielders….please.

2)Pitching. Enough said. Starting pitching and bullpen. Best in the NL. Even with Pedro out.

      3) Speed on the bases. Mets can manufacture runs much easier than the Braves. The Braves offense is a stand around and hope for the three run homer offense. The Mets can do that, but what makes them really dangerous is the speed on the basepaths. Speed never goes into slumps, power hitters and line-ups do. Mets are aggressive in stealing a bases. The first 4 guys in the Mets line-up can steal 30 bases each with their eyes closed. This puts unrelenting pressure on the pitchers and the defense because there is a threat there is frequently going to be a player in scoring position. The box score doesn’t reflect the effect this has on the opposing team, but you can see it with your eyes when watching the game.

  23. metrokard says:

Hope Pedro gets well soon once he comes back and is ready to rock we will have an almost perfect team…right now after maine our pitching gets a little shaky Here is hoping he comes back fast

  24. icedrake523 says:

Don’t worry everyone, I’m eating a lot of crow tonight.

  25. metsdude13 says:

Is anyone else watching ESPN 2?

    • Wheelhouse19 says:

I am. Chad Johnson is pretty damn funny. That was like a drunk dial to an ex girlfriend…..hilarious.

      • metsdude13 says:

That was one of the most ridiculous interviews I’ve ever heard. Think he was wasted, or high?

        “That’s it?”

        LOL

        • Wheelhouse19 says:

          Probably…..or just being an idiot.

He sounded so sad when he said “thats it?”

Like he was breaking up with his girl…..flashy wide receivers, what do you expect.

        • metsfan05 says:

OMG i loved that interview idk y but even tho chad johnson is 1 of the most arrogant players in the NFL i still love the way he talks during interviews.

          thats it? ROFL

    • KinersKornerman says:

nah, gave up on Baseball tonite already. They’re still droning on about Pedro’s injury. Ugh.

  26. miker94 says:

Wow, great win. It’s true, we didn’t have a win like this at all last year so it’s nice to see. They really look like they ARE out to make a statement. Not just to win games but to dominate. And what a great bounce back game after last night’s loss. From top to bottom they looked great. I’m so happy!

    • metsin080910 says:

Can’t agree with you more. I’m very impressed with the way Church and Schneider are hitting. Who knows, maybe Ho-Jo fixed them and they now see the ball better against lefties. Whatever it is is working.

I’m so excited about this season.

      Come back soon Pedro.

    • Wheelhouse19 says:

Lets callllm down a bit. Im not here to play devils advocate but it was the Florida Marlins. The competition only gets better from here on out, and you know this Mets offense will sputter.

They key is…..sputter once in a while, not every other night like last season.

2 of 3 from Atlanta and I will be much happier.

      • metsin080910 says:

Nothing wrong with being excited about your favorite team.

      • m00kie says:

why do “you know this offense will sputter?” What are you basing that statement on? You know there’s another game tomorrow .. that’s about it.

  27. Wheelhouse19 says:

Not too concerned with Pedro coming back anytime soon. Honestly, whose to say it doesn’t happen again? Plus…he’s looked the worst out of any pitcher so far, like someone stated earlier.

The caveat now is Pelfrey. He has to step it up. This is the end of the road for him. He has the stage…..shutup and pitch already. No more excuses. No more AAA. Pitch and win now.

For the 5th spot, who cares…its the 5 spot. No team has a good one. We have Sosa, or Nelson (who looked pretty good tonight for that one inning). I’m not worried about the rotation.

if Pelfrey can get it together, that would be amazing, especially when Pedro came back, but it remains to be seen. Sometimes, its like Pelfrey gives hitters way too much respect, and hopefully he can get his change up working, or his slider, whichever, hitters sitting on his fastball all game is what leads to his usual results, especially when he doesn’t have his good fastball, which probably happens more then it should.

      • RIPmurph says:

Don’t expect anything out of Pelfrey. He sucks. If he gives us a decent start, consider it an unexpected bonus. We’ll piece it together regardless. Personally, I don’t count on anything from Pelfrey. Been down that road too many times. He just isn’t that good.

        • darkstar73 says:

I admit he hasn’t been that good in the past with the exception of a few games, but I’m not giving up on him, not now. What would be the point of that?

        • RIPmurph says:

I’m not advocating giving up on him, but I don’t think he should be anywhere near the big league team this year, unless it occurs at the end of the season when the Mets have already locked up the division and he’s done well enough in AAA to come up and get some big league experience in games the Mets don’t really need. Of course, that plan is already out the window, as it appears he’s going to get an opportunity early this season, and obviously as a fan I hope he does well, but I certainly don’t expect him to based on the body of work I’ve seen the past couple seasons, and I definitely don’t think he deserves it at all. I’ve seen enough of Pelfrey to know what he is: He’s a back end starter in this league, at best, and that’s still a few years away. That’s not giving up on him. That’s just being honest.

Unless the Brewers win by more than 10 runs in tomorrow’s game the Mets will finish the opening series of the year with the best run-differential in baseball: 24-7. The statheads all say run differential is the best predictor of future performance for a team.

I’d feel great about that stat right now if I could shake the knowledge that last year the Mets exited the opening series with the best run differential in baseball, and actually still had the best even after losing 2 of 3 to the Braves, and had the best in the NL until about August.

    • RIPmurph says:

It’s a nice predictor, but not until you’ve played a decent sample size. One series is insignificant. And, as you mention, the Mets had the best in the NL last year through July, and look what that got them. These are nice little stats to play around with, but in the end there’s just too many variables to the game to be able to predict anything with certainty. That’s what makes it such a great game.

      • Mingo says:

Last year the Mets were not able to put together any long winning streaks. They did just enough to get by.
And the reason they had the best run differential last year through the first half wasn’t because they dominated teams. It was because the NL didn’t have any other teams dominating. For example, those teams that pitched well, like the Padres had poor offenses, those teams that hit well had poor pitching, like the Philliies.
I sincerely believe the Mets pitching is the best in the league. Their bullpen I think is better than two years ago. Their starting pitching is solid even without Pedro. They do need a little more from the 5 spot but they are okay.
I don’t see this team falling into the “do enough to get by” trap. The focus they have is better. They are on a mission.

  29. C Dubb says:

I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but someone last night questioned whether we had any “tough losses” like last night in 2006. And tonight I just remembered Ryan Zimmerman’s home run against Billy Wagner in the first series of that season (2nd game, I believe). That was was a real kick in the gut, but it didn’t stop us from winning something like 10 of the first 11 games. I don’t see any reason why this team can’t do the same thing in ‘08. If the offense continues to produce runs, and the bullpen stays in lockdown mode, we could be looking at another sprint out of the gate like in ‘06.

Just stomp the Braves…..all I care about right now.

Their fans finally win a game vs the Pirates who are worse than the Marlins, and they are all talking like they won the division already. It’s seriously a joke.

      • RIPmurph says:

I didn’t know they had any fans. Atlanta is an awful sports town. Except for NASCAR, I guess.

      • irish_eagle says:

I think you’re wrong about PIttsburgh vs Florida. I think Florida and San Francisco are easily the worst two teams in the league. Pittsburgh has some decent pitchers and should be at least respectable.

Damn, Bannister looked good today. I can’t get over it.

  31. Cactus says:

Andrew Miller is a kid lefty who was all over the place and probably isn’t big league ready… lets see what Church does against major league lefties before we get too excited there.

  32. CornellMetsFan says:

we need more innings out of ollie. give us 7 every once in a while! and willie, do we really need to use wagner in the 9th? let someone play pitch

    • stickguy says:

he likely came out due to the double digit lead. NO need to push him in game 1.

Also, he wanted to get the guys that hadn’t poitched an inning, since they have an off day tomorrow, otherwise Wags and Feliciano wouldn’t have pitched for almost a full week.

  33. Two-By-Four says:

It was a nice and enjoyable blowout tonight. OP pitched well and he, Maine and Johan will have to carry the load for at least 2 months.

You have to be pleased with the overall play of Pagan, Church and Schneider. However, it’s much too early for me to get excited over a quick (or slow) start from any player; I believe that over a season players, like water, will seek their own true level .

  34. sincekindergarten says:

What impressed me the most about Ollie’s start was the fact that he was throwing the slider early in the count–on the first pitch most of the time–for strikes. One could tell that the Marlins lineup had probably been told, “He’ll throw a first-pitch fastball.”

Great performance by all concerned. Ollie does need to go a tad deeper into the games.

  35. terpz06 says:

good start to the season, they should be crushing these kinds of teams

  36. djbutler says:

I agree that taking calls is awkward, but because of the potential for fan interaction, it would be a nice addition to blowouts and rain delays, good call Matt. Now, you just have to get that idea up to the SNY gameday producers.
