Buzz: No Contact Yet Between Fonzi and Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 3, 2008 3:21 pm

from what i can gather, while he’d love to re-join his old organization, more realistically in Triple-A, there have been no discussions between Edgardo Alfonzo’s representatives and the Mets

…which is good and bad i, i guess…i mean, emotionally speaking, i’d love to see fonzi in a Mets uniform one more time…on other the hand, there is a reason he has just 11 major-league hits since leaving the Giants in 2005

I loved Fonzie but the Mets don’t need any more middle-aged players with injury problems (back).

    • Jaded1983 says:

speaking of which, anyone know how Valentin is doing?

      • thrilledge 4 prez says:

screw valentin……thrilledge is 3-5 today though against the phils

        • stickguy says:

have to give it time. Everyones numbers get inflated hitting in the CBP bandox, against the lousy Philly pitching.

Although I agree that he is going to have a big year. I am on record saying it after the season ended, before he got traded.

I do like what I have seen of Church so far. Too bad they don’t have both of them!

      • Ametfan says:

Thrilledge. I love that. That dude is a future All Star. It should have been with the Mets. We sure could use that righthanded bat about now.

        • diehard says:

I agree Thriledge will probably be great and the trade will probably end up being a bad move but at least today the day after church homered (off a lefty!!) could we not discuss Thriledge!?!?!?!

        • MudvilleNine says:

Why cant the trade be beneficial to both teams? If Milledge does well then its good for the Nats and him. If Schneider and Church help the Mets to the World Series this year and beyond then it was good for the Mets. It was known at the end of last season that the Mets needed a LH bat in RF and a defensive catcher. They got both for one potentially good player. The only reason they are LH heavy right now is because Schneider bats lefty, but thats good in a way because it gives Castro the opportunity to play more. So again, why cant this trade be a winner for both sides?

        • stickguy says:

because that won’t make a lot of the posters here happy!

    • plummetdown says:

too bad beltran and wright will split the mvp votes this year.

THERE BOTH GOING TO PUT UP MONSTER NUMBERS.

      BELIEVE IT

I heard there a guy at a retirment home by my house that can brush his teeth right handed….Lets sign him up…

Alou, Pedro, El Duque, Delgado…and now Fonzi?

What happened to avoiding old constantly injured players?

  3. Xavier22 says:

Didn’t they already try this move last season and it didn’t work out? Sign Fonzi up as a minor league manager and call it a day.

  4. QnsNative718 says:

While we’re at it, how bout giving Olerud a call about first base??? (For those of you with a dim light in your head Im being sarcastic)

  5. Agee's Catch says:

In light of valentin being on the verge of retirement, I’d offer Fonzie a job in AAA as a player/mentor. Let him back up 1B/3B, maybe even 2B. If we have a spot open in July or August due to injury, maybe he can be the guy.

Of course he has to earn it.

In my eyes, he’s earned the chance to try & work it out in AAA. It’s great PR, and could be a great story.

  6. QnsNative718 says:

BTW I love the Willie bobblehead doll in the top left corner. I got a FREE one back at a game in 2005. Arent I the lucky one…

  7. lonman1129 says:

Better for Fonzie to go to the Ducks and commute from home. if he is killing the ball there then the Mets will see him and bring him in, especially if someone gets hurt at Triple A.

    • rustysribs says:

It’s funny, I went to a Ducks game last year and Fonzi looked very impressive to me. He had a couple hits, played nice defense. I wondered why the Mets didn’t give him a shot last year when we had our injury issues.

  8. dave27 says:

What’s funny is that everyone is ripping on this notion of giving Fonzie a shot, but if it was announced that he signed a minor-league deal with hte Braves or Phillies everyone would freak out.

Any idea what he did this spring for Texas?

    • saltzy007 says:

No one would freak out. Not a single person on this site. Can I get a few ‘Amens’ on this?

Huh…anyone out there willing to state that if the Phils or Braves signed Alfonzo they would ‘freak out’…

      Buhler?….Buhler???

      • dave27 says:

Maybe you missed the full-scale panic that broke out when Gotay was claimed by Atlanta. If Gotay could generate literally 300 comments I’m sure at least a few people would get a little concerned that the Phillies or Braves were on to something and we’d have to watch him torture us this September.

Frankly I’ve yet to see something NOT cause a freakout on this site!

        • saltzy007 says:

Gotay is a young guy that put up decent offensive numbers last year for us. I can see why people didnt wanna see him go…

Fonzi is OOOOld, washed up, done, finished. over, finito, synara, peace out, used up, washed up….who cares WHO hes with, as long as its not the Mets. As a matter of fact, good. It means we didnt sign him….

        • mikey_FF says:

          Yet you keep coming back.

        • Nate W. says:

I dont think anyone freaked out when the Red Sox signed Colon to a minor league deal…

No one freaked out when Livan Hernandez signed with the Twins… hell half of us didnt even notice.

  9. MudvilleNine says:

MAybe just make him the hitting coach with his brother in Brooklyn.

  10. Agee's Catch says:

I have Milledge, Gomez and Bannister on my fantasy team - by choice- and I’m in 1st baby!

  11. jpnym15 says:

im just scared..like, i know the mets have a great team this year..but milledge and gomez were awesome and they’re getting off to great starts..i’m jealous..seriously

  12. koosman3669 says:

With the subtraction of Glavin, Franco, and Valentin I would have thought the roster would have gotten younger, but they said the Mets are the second oldest club in the majors.

    • Nate W. says:

      Everyone is one year older…

If you replace those three with three guys each 8 years younger all it does is offset everyone else adding 1 year.

The Mets only have 36 players on thier 40 man roster, where those last four guys would likely be 21-25 if they hadnt all been traded for Santana…

  13. lbg713 says:

Just for the record, Alfonzo is 34 years old.

  14. stickguy says:

Wait, you mean this wasn’t another april fools joke? Wow.
