Orlando Hernandez will make his first rehab start for Single-A St. Lucie Mets tonight at Tradition Field.
Before last night’s game, Orlando Hernandez told reporters he intends to make three minor-league rehab starts before rejoining the major-league club.
…so, as i said last night, this suggests he will be unavailable until at least the middle of April, which means the Mets will only need to start Nelson Figueroa once, on April 12, assuming a) the Mets push up their rotation, to start Oliver Perez next Tuesday in the home opener, and b) el duque does not suffer a set back…

Good luck on Assumption B!
Wasn’t sure where to post this, so sorry for the double post.
Orlando Hernandez made his first rehab start tonight, and top prospect Jon Niese took the ball in Binghamton’s season opener.
I followed each game until Niese and Hernandez were taken out. http://www.metsprospectus.blogspot.com
FINAL LINE:
Orlando Hernandez: 5 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, 6 k’s
Jon Niese (stands to get the win): 5 IP, H, 0 ER, BB, 5 k’s
St. Lucie:
8:45: El Duque is done for the night after 5 innings pitched.
8:38: Another solid inning by El Duque. He didn’t give up a hit, and allowed just one base runner on a HBP. Not sure if he’s done, but I’ll keep you updated. Meanwhile the St. Lucie Mets have tied up the game at 2, thanks to doubles by Lucas Duda and Wabick.
8:15: Nice bounce back inning for Orlando Hernandez, who retired Vero Beach 1-2-3. His line so far: 4 IP 3 hits 2 ER 5 k’s.
7:55: Ruff third inning for El Duque.. He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, including a solo homerun to Matt field. He also walked a batter and had a wild pitch in the inning.
7:30: Hernandez’s second inning, much like his first, no hits, no runs, and a strike out. 2 IP 0 hits 3 k’s so far.
7:20: Orlando Hernandez threw a 1-2-3 first inning, while striking out two batters.
Binghamton:
7:50: After another scoreless inning, Jon Niese may be done. If he is, he’ll end with a final line of 5 IP, H, 0 ER, BB, 5 k’s.
7:30: RBI ground out from SS prospect Emmanuel Garcia to give the Binghamton Mets a 2-0 lead. Niese continues to roll, as he just finished pitching a scoreless 4th.
7:20: Jon Niese has thrown 3 scoreless innings, and has struck out three batters. Meanwhile, 1B prospect Mike Carp has hit a homerun in his first at bat off of lefty Chase Wright.
I’m kinda excited to see how Figgy does.
Me Too. This club is sorely lacking a nice Brooklyn born Italian-American.
excuse my ignorance i’m not even sure Figueroa is an Italian name… just wishful thinking i guess.
how long of a leash do you think they are going to give Big Pelf? If Figueroa pitches well and Pelf doesnt, who do you think gets sent back first? (assuming DL Duque stays healthy AND effective)
im not too up on options, and the ability to be sent up and down, so if anyone can enlighten me to the logistics, id appreciate it
What you said makes sense Jaded,
Both Pelf and Duque have to be good, cause if they do not then Figueroa gets a real chance to make it.
I’ve never been able to wrap my head around how the options work either, but I’m sure at 87 years old Duque is out of them.
Go get-em Figgy!!
If this guy pitches good then there will be a movement and following like you won’t believe.
BUT WAIT
You gotta BELIEVE.
If Nelson pitches well, can we get a chant of
Figaro, Figaro, Figueroa…….ok, its a stretch….
Acta is a moron for walking Howard to get the bases loaded with guys on 1st and 2nd. Especially with someone as slow as Howard.
1st and 3rd I meant
Wait….i thought Manny Acta shoulda been manager of the Mets!
(Not directed at you Wolv, just a general snarky comment)
his name is on the door at The Citi
Well the reasoning was that Howard has like a 87.4% better chance of driving in a run than Werth does….Of course when you walk Werth on 4 pitches, it kind of torpedos the plan.
I was talking to a phillies fan as this was happening and he changed my mind. I thought that they should have walked utley and gone after howard since he has alot of holes in his swing. He does hold the all time record for k’s in a season. But the more I thought of it, there really isn’t any need to pitch to a fly ball hitting former MVP if you have a base open and a fly ball wins the game. I think they did the right thing walking him and looking for the dp, it’s just a shame the pitcher sucks and kenny rogered the game.
AND he walks in the winning run of 4 pitches, of course, un-f’ing-believable. One of these days an intelligent person will manage a baseball team and will just dominate.
and (of course) mlb.tv was acting up and wouldn’t let me log on to watch the 10th inning.
How did Rollins get to 3rd on the Sac Bunt? Did Zimmerman throw the ball away to 2nd?
hustle
Well. Good for him I guess.
I wish there was a way to get Santana available to pitch opening day at Shea. Not sure if its possible but maybe pitch Nelson Figueroa on the 6th versus Atlanta and in doing so save Santana for tuesday at Shea. It would mean a long layoff between Santana’s starts. Anyone think thats possible?
IT’S NOT IMPORTANT! People are putting way too much of an emphasis on opening day. Who cares who pitches….its just another game. All we want is the W. Santana, Ollie, Maine….it doesn’t matter.
Perez is pitching. He looks real good. Willie isn’t going to go shuffling the rotation and throwing everything out of wack just so some fans can enjoy Santana pitching the last opening day at Shea. It’s not that big of a deal.
Why would you do that simply so Santana can get the opening day start? If that’s the case I think that is a pretty dumb idea as we did not give up 4 prospects and then pay him 137.5 mil to pitch one game. There will be a time (probably next year in fact) when we will open at home and Santana will pitch. Till then who cares who starts on opening day or day two three and four for that matter. Put Santana out there every fifth day and expect a victory…LETS GO METS
Seriously. He’s going to open CitiField next year…hopefully the same night we raise the ‘08 WS banner!
I think santana should pitch every game like they do in softball. those chicks are incredible.
If Pelfrey tanks it for his first few starts I think its offically time for the Mets to give up on the Mike Pelfrey experiment.
There is no reason for him to work out kinks in AAA ball anymore. He needs to face major league competition, and if he still can’t throw strikes, or gather his command….its time for Omar and the Mets to part ways with this utterly overhyped prospect. There was more hot air around Pelfrey than the Las Vegas strip in the middle of July.
If he tanks, we have to pick up a free agent pitcher. In other words….lets hope he pitches ok.
He’s getting paid too much. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Mets could draft a pitcher that panned out for once?
I could answer your question with the dreaded Kazm…..
But I won’t do that because it makes me want to break things, and that can have serious consequences when your still in the office.
Bottom line is, the Mets have a tendancy of overhyping prospects so their trade chip value goes up. It happened with Pelfrey, Milledge, and Gomez, and while 2 of the 3 are solid players…or could be, they certainly havnt shown that much yet.
Thats why when everyone talks about Fernando Martinez as the second coming, I don’t really listen. When he is up on this level, I’ll see what he does and judge from there. Being good at AAA level does not translate to the majors.
Aaron Heilman is no slouch
So does that mean that Santana will pitch Sunday against the Braves and then Friday night at Shea against the Brew Crew?
Friday or Saturday vs the Brewers…not sure which day, but one of those 2 games. And a W vs the Brewers, counts just the same as if he beat the Phils on opening day.
All I care about is the number in the W column climbing. I don’t care what team they do it against…
unless your the Braves, who I hate with a passion. I hope they lose every single game the rest of the way.
I just hope they bang good ole Tommy Glavine around on Sunday lets see how “disappointed” he is then. I would love nothing more than a repeat of his first game with us.
yeah, I agree with you about opening day. just trying to figure out Johan’s first home start so I can buy tix for that game.
It should be Friday night vs Brewers as he will pitch Sunday the 6th then 5 days rest puts him Fri night…..I did the same thing when they announced he would start opening day in Miami and rather than risk it bought tics to the whole weekend series. LOL
If he starts Sunday vs the braves, five days later is Friday vs the Brewers. How could it be anything else?
4/4-Maine
4/5-Pelfrey
4/6-Santana
4/7-OFF
4/8-Perez
4/9-Maine
4/10-Pelfrey
4/11-Santana
They pitch Figueroa on opening day then perez, maine, pelf. Santana would pitch on Saturday. Well its seems unlikely that would happen it has not been dismissed.
So what’s the rotation/matchup after Maine/Hudson?
big pelf vs Old man Galvine
Johan vs Smoltz
Thanks Wright stuff, I hope they rip the cover off of the ball against Glavine, and Smoltz of course.
I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the triumphant return of El Duque.
I believe it’s Pelf/Glavine and Santana/Smoltz.
Your beard is weird.
I’m not particularly crazy about Mike Pelfrey the pitcher, but damn, do I love the name “Big Pelf.”
How long do we have John Maine locked up for??
I am concerned that after he out-pitches the entire Mets pitching staff (including Johan) this year he is not going to be happy with the donk amount of money he is making.
Willie better pitch Johan on Saturday. It is his regular day and would set him up to pitch in both Philly series and the other series against Atlanta later in the month. If he waits until Sunday Johan will miss both Philly series,
and that ain’t happening!
