as was reported last night, Pedro Martinez has been put on the 15–day disabled list with a mild strain to his left hamstring.
He is expected to be out four to six weeks.
Following last night’s win, Willie Randolph told reporters that he
feels mostly bad for Martinez, more than he feels bad for the team, adding:
“We don’t trip on stuff like that, ya know. We’ve been a solid team, a together-team, ever since I’ve been here. These guys believe in each other. We love to play and get after it. If you’re here with us and join the party, that’s great. We’ll invite you, you’re there…That’s why I love this group. They don’t make excuses, they just play.”
…what in god’s name is he talking about…seriously…who is invited to the party…and what party…is it me…should i wear a tux…man, i hope not…and i love that he still uses the word, ‘trip,’ like it’s 1992…he makes me laugh, probably because i am not a beat writer…i would probably have a different opinion if i had to extract quotes from him myself, but, from here it’s hilarious…
Prior to the game, Randolph told reporters that he may choose to pitch Oliver Perez on Tuesday, in the home opener, with Nelson Figueroa getting a start later in the week against the Brewers.
Following the game he appeared no closer to a final decision.

Please go with Ollie on Tuesday. We should skip the #5 for at least a couple of turns while we can. Even the Marlins are going to skip their #5.
Not to be Debbie Downer, but I’ll be shocked if Pedro is back at Shea before June 1. I mean, I hope he is, but I doubt it.
Yeah, I feel the same way, and I don’t see the upside only b/c I had such high expectations for Pedro this season. I’ll just hope that when he returns he pitches brilliantly.
ok if he’s out 4 to 6 weeks why is he on a 15 day DL?
ok i thought a little more about it… the next stop is the 60 day DL and if hes good before then the mets are sitting on their hands…
im going to go make another drink
Ollie really should pitch Tuesday. It is, after all, a Platinum level ticket day, and if I have to pay $117 to sit in a loge box, I deserve to see better than Figgy getting pounded by the Phils lefties!
seriously, it makes way too much sense to just keep everyone on normal rest, and use the fifth guy on the 12th (or whatever day the turn finally comes up in the normal rotation). Figgys role rigth now is to be the extra long man in case someone has to get pulled early (OK, Plefrey gets pulled early!).
you never know… it might rain a day in atlanta and johan gets the start in shea!
I don’t think they’d push johan back, unless sunday’s game is rained out…it’ll already be 6 days, and he doesn’t get bumped unless his day’s gone.
I actually watched the post game show and saw that interview with Willie. I’m a huge Willie fan, but I remember wondering where he was going with that ‘invited to the party’ bit. I think he had a couple escalators in his head that all lead to nowhere on that one.
I know that’s the least significant part of this post, but it made me laugh.
haha on the money
Not only did he go with the “party” metaphor, but he said this about Perez:
“All of his pitches were crisp, and he stayed in his rhythm. That’s the key for him, not freelancing like he tends to do.”
For some reason, I laughed when I read “freelancing.” Perez isn’t a full-time salaried employee with health benefits; he’s a freelance.
I think he meant freestyling. Maybe he didn’t know that’s what he meant, but I think it’s what he meant.
Reading those quotes I’m almost wondering if Willie’s been free-basing, whatever about people freelancing.
Willie, willie, willie.
What happened with the recalled homerun of Beltran’s? Willie should’ve gotten himself booted arguing that BS call. Da Mets were already up six runs at that point; the team didn’t need his presence on the bench, but they did need to see their leader getting fired up and fighting for what is rightfully theirs.
The manager is largely a figurehead and, as such, Willie sucks. Willie likes to give the appearance of effortlessness at all times–cool hand, Will–and that’s fine for him. But Willie was a Yankee and effortlessness is the Yankees style. The style of the Mets, no matter how large the payroll has gotten (and it’s big), is fighting for everything they get: the underdog mentality, even when they are not actually the underdog. The Mets need to play as though every team in the league, even the Marlins, owes them something–even if it’s the Mets who, with revenue sharing, are helping to pad the coffers of smaller market teams.
You mean like continuing to pound on the Marlins last night?
Come on, I can’t believe that anyone would want Willie to get ejected in that spot. Save it for when it matters.
Willie never worries.
Personally, I think he’s high on ludes.
‘…and i love that he still uses the word, ‘trip,’ like it’s 1992…’
lol. matthew, you are showing us old timer readers just how young you are. try like 1972….
willie has some weird word spasms….
My favorite Willie interview moment came after a game in which Mike Piazza hit a LONG, LONG home run. Afterwards, Willie said…
“Well, you know, Mike is prone to hitting those long, jamestic home runs.”
I swear to you he said “jamestic.”
I love Willie.
