By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 4, 2008 8:00 am

Braves LHP Mike Hampton has been put back on disabled list after hurting himself in pregame warm-ups last night, which would have been his first major-league start in two years.

in other breaking news, the sun rose from the east today

According to Jeff Schultz in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “You name it, Hampton’s had it,” ranging from back pain to oblique muscles to calf injuries to vertigo.

to silly excuses about school systems in Colorado…

Carl Pavano and Mike Hampton can start their own competition of who can stay on the DL the longest while fooling teams into thinking they can actually help their teams.

Hate to say it but wouldn’t Pedro fit into that category as well?

      • theperfectgame says:

I wish Pedro were healthy, too, but even if he never throws another inning for the Mets, his was one of the most important signings in Mets history (at least recent Mets history). It gave a floundering franchise instant legitimacy. And it was proof to other free agents (e.g. Carlos Beltran) that the Mets were committed to winning. Plus, and sorry but it’s true, Pedro is a hero to Latin America. And talented young Latin players who want to follow in his footsteps all of a sudden see the Mets as a destination (and yeah, Omar helps too).

I also think that Pedro is one of the most intelligent baseball minds out there. And I’d love to see him stay with the Mets organization (future pitching coach, perhaps?) after he eventually retires.

        • therealsince86 says:

Did not say any of those things were not true, I will say the willingness to finally spend money helped bring in Beltran and Wagner (as well as Pedro).
However, fact is he has had the entire Mets nation on DL watch. When is he pitching, when will he throw from the mound, how quickly will he recover, he will be our August pickup…….

        • theperfectgame says:

In that sense (having the fans on DL-watch), I’d agree. I was just trying to point out the difference between Pedro and the others. I guess I get a little defensive of Pedro, because I think some people on this site (not necessarily you) lose sight of the big picture nature of the Pedro signing, and how much he has helped this franchise.

        • therealsince86 says:

I love Pedro and he brought us back into the media but I think we still would have had the core of our team with our without him.

        • theperfectgame says:

Yeah, maybe. I’m not so sure, but there is no way of knowing so it’s be a silly point to argue.

And one thing we’d both agree on despite what his signing meant or didn’t mean, is that we’d both rather have him healthy and pitching. Hear that, Pedro? Get well soon. As well and as soon as humanly possible!

        • Another Matt says:

Santana said in an interview that Pedro was a big part of him wanting to be a Met, and as Matt has written at length, Johan wanting to be a Met was a big part of the Twins’ hand being forced.

      • metsin080910 says:

At least Pedro can actually still be effective.

        • Another Matt says:

And at least Pedro managed to make it to the mound… that’s 10 more outs than Hampton managed :P

  2. theperfectgame says:

“…in other breaking news, the son rose from the east today…”

    A little deep, there, Matt…

    • therealsince86 says:

      The resurrection?

      • Cerrone says:

You know me, hooked on fonix, buddy.

        • therealsince86 says:

LOL, it actually could be deep considering that the son did rise in the East. But I am not sure comparing Hampton to Jesus is a good idea.

        • theperfectgame says:

Yup. If it’s any consolation, (as is the case with 99% of the typos on this site) the context of your comment was clear. (I was just teasing… I grew up with 2 younger brothers, it’s beyond my control.)

        • mhochman says:

Well i dunno, the comparason does kinda fit, i mean ever since he went to Colorado for the “Schools” we mets fans have been Crusifying him..

    • toropoet says:

Matt’s response made my morning. Love the NY style sarcasm.
And boy aren’t we glad we didn’t try to keep Hampton!

  3. sincekindergarten says:

Wasn’t his last decent season the 2000 season?

If I were an Atlanta fan, I’d have pulled my hair out of my head a long time ago over this guy.

Speaking of Atlanta, their bullpen coughed up another game last night . . . and Tyler Yates, now pitching for the Pirates, got the win–against the club that cut him a few weeks ago.

    • m00kie says:

bobby cox even had to use the move the pitcher to left field, bring in the lefty, and put the pitcher back in trick…Their bullpen has been stretched to the max. I hope our guys take advantage this weekend! Hudson usually gives them some innings, but Glavine tomorrow can be pushed out by the 5th or 6th, and Smoltz will be watched closely in his first start back after the shoulder thing. Our pen meanwhile is rested but tuned. I’m looking for a big game from Maine tonight, a high scoring shoot out tomorrow, and a tight pitchers duel sunday..should be a fun weekend!

  4. Lloyd Bonafide says:

    The “son” rose?

And you criticize the way professional reporters write?

    sincerely,
    Lloyd Bonafide

  5. Kalihan42 says:

Wow…for those on this blog who like to bash Minaya for a couple of moves that didn’t work out, should we praise Steve Phillips for having the forsight to let Hampton go? I jest….I know Hampton seemed like he wanted to leave anyway….

Although i never like to see anyone hurt, it is nice to see the braves saddled with one of these players instead of us.

    • therealsince86 says:

Phillips was no where near as bad as everyone makes him out to be.

      • theperfectgame says:

Agreed. He’s obnoxious and self-absorbed. But he was a much better GM than he gets credit for.

        • helicopter ben johnson says:

          agreed

        • Kalihan42 says:

Mo vaugn anyone? Jeoromy Burnitz?…ok Alomar wasn’t his fault…but I agree he’s not AS bad as he was made out, but I would not call him GOOD

  6. Man, Hampton just steals money. They should charge him with grand larceny.

  7. miker94 says:

That’s so funny, I know I shouldn’t laugh at the fact that someone got hurt, but….HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Just the beginning for the Braves pitching staff where everyone thought they were so scary, yeah whatever!

  8. dave27 says:

I believe I responded to a post about the Braves rotation the other day with the note “you think Hampton is going to last much more than 57 pitches either?”

    Bingo.

  9. thegloaming says:

Pedro is being paid for four years, he has given us one. Maybe some free agents did sign with the Mets because of him–more likely they came to New York for a) money, b) location (which can lead to more money) and, c) the chance to compete for a world championship.

  10. QnsNative718 says:

Mike Hampton is as reliable as a crackhead who owes money…

  11. QnsNative718 says:

Pedro Martinez on the other hand is only as reliable as a crackhead though… I kid, I kid…

  12. Charlie says:

Thank you Mike Hampton, again, for sucking after you left us and, OF COURSE, for David Wright. We love you!

  13. zen says:

this is a guy who questioned piazza’a toughness after the clemens issue. hampton just wants to collect a paycheck.

  14. lawgotham says:

I don’t wish injuries on anybody…but it couldn’t happen to a better guy. Hey, how are the schools in Atlanta?
