Note: Will Citi Make Shea a Hitter’s Park
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 4, 2008 11:35 am

my friend, Mark from SNY, took the following photos from the on-deck circle at Shea Stadium looking out towards center field…

…as you can see, Citi Field, which is now 85 percent complete, creates a back wall for Shea, which had never been the case before…in essence, Shea Stadium is now closed in

In a report last summer for SI.com, Jon Heyman explained that there is a ‘theory going’ around’ that such a wall could change the wind patterns and allow balls to carry out to left-center in Shea.

in the past, as Mike Piazza will attest to, fly balls to left typically get knocked down by the strong wind blowing in and over the bullpen and picnic area…now, as you can see, there is essentially a wall out there to block the wind…sorry, mike…

…it will be very interesting to see how this impacts wind patterns, if at all, and whether it slightly changes the play of Shea Stadium, which we always consider a pitcher’s park…

Maybe castro’s ball would have went out for a grand slam in game 162 last year…

    • UpperDeckDweller says:

If anything i think that Citi-Arena created a bit of a change in wind patterns to right field last year. Balls that looked like they were hit hard and should be homers ended up dying out there and dropping, maybe sometimes the wind used to swirl and push balls out to right and now the wall is stopping that outgoing wind? I dont pretend to know anything about wind currents but there were times last year that i thought for sure we had crunked a homer and it ended up a long fly-out….who knows maybe im just jaded cause i hate this new 45,000 seat “stadium” we are building…

      • mackey_sassers_arm says:

Balls that were crushed that didn’t go out weren’t new in ‘07. Remember the last out of the 2000 WS? It’s been that way since the stadium was built.

    • Ametfan says:

You mean to tell me that no one from the Mets has gone to Shea and hit some balls to see how they are going to carry? I would be surprised if that were the case.

  2. beltransmole says:

In MLB ‘08 The Show they actually have Citi Field being built behind the LF wall. Can’t wait until opening day ‘09.

    • pkay23 says:

      thats awesome

    • K-Hern says:

and the cranes keep moving………. even during night games

    • atrain311 says:

Right on brother! I own the game and refuse to play at Shea in my Season Mode until the real Mets get there. I want it to me special on many levels. :)

      • atrain311 says:

        *be special

        not me special.

      • Charlie says:

hey, can someone tell me whether it’s worth buying 2K8 for xbox360? i’m debating.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

the only thing that stinks is they dont have citifield available in season mode in 09-beyond. i know madden used to do that when football teams were getting new stadiums which i think was cool. i just want to experience citifield somehow even if its just a virtual mock makeup of what it will be like.

    • theperfectgame says:

That’s pretty neat. It’s amazing how far they’ve come since “RBI Baseball”…

  3. dave27 says:

Hmm, I wonder, because it’s not enclosed…Citifield runs parallel with that alley and you wonder it it’ll create even more of a wind tunnel effect, with the wind channelled into a narrower area. It could be the opposite. Let’s hope so for Pat Burrell’s sake.

    Matt,

Can you post a link to those pics at a larger size?
I’m curious to see how the progress is coming along…

      baseballfever(dot)com…

The thread about stadiums. Theres a thread dedicated to the stadium with 2,000 replies, pics, opinions….etc…

best place to go on the net…trust me on this…

Great shot from the UD in Shea on the current page that will give you great idea. how it looks……

      • stellar says:

For those of you looking for the pics, it’s actually baseball-fever dot com. You need the dash.

The thread is in the “Ballparks, Stadiums & Green Diamonds” forum near the top, not in the Mets forum.

        • saltzy007 says:

Thanks for clearing up my typo in a curtious way…and not think your cool cause you noticed I forgot a ‘-’….

Where did this GeorgeThomas character come from anyway?

Nice job pointing out the error that someone already cleared up though….thats a very hard achievment….

          Yutz….

        • GeorgeThomas says:

C’mon Saltzberg, don’t you remember how you called me a YUTZ yesterday because I wouldn’t bow down and genuflect to the legacy of Piazza? I was just giving you a little jab back.

I must have been typing while stellar posted his reply or I wouldn’t have added mine.

As far as where I came from… don’t worry about it.

Also, forgive me for pointing this out, but you spelled “corteous” and “you’re” wrong. Was that polite enough for you?

      • GeorgeThomas says:

        Hey YUTZ,

        It’s baseball-fever(dot)com

once again, proof read before you submit.

        • stellar says:

is there an echo in here?

once again, read the only other response to him to make sure someone didnt already give the correct link

  5. Danny says:

    Your welcome, David.

  6. DerekBellsMustache says:

If Wright hits a HR like he did the other night it might land on the Citifield infield

  7. cruzer125 says:

To me, it slightly resembles Minute Maid Park in Houston now. Especially in CF with those windows. How awesome would it be if someone were to launch one into the windows. Would have to be a 500+ footer. But THAT would be the first home run IN citi field..

  8. saltzy007 says:

Well….that should certainly be a comfort to all of our right handed power hitters, like DWright…..aaaaannd….um, DWright…..and lets of course lets not forget DWright….

Well, at least Utley, Howard, Francour, and Tex are all lefties and Chipper and JRoll are better from the left side. Outside of Hanley Ramirez(and guys out of the division like Pujols) I’m hoping its not an advantage to the opposition…

I KNEW they should have built it in RF to account for the wind on ‘08 and our lack of RH power….damn you Omar. Way to think ahead….

    • Raditz says:

With Delgado in major decline I welcome this change. The likes of the Phillies (Howard and Utley) can probably get eh ball out regardless of the wind patterns.

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

I remember reading sometime ago that Shea has always been “kinder” though not necessarily “kind” to left-handed hitters. That’s part of the reason Cliff Floyd was able to over 30 HRs in 2005.

So not to be a nervous nellie, but if Shea now has its advantages for RH hitters, given the surplus of good lefties the NL East already has, you better hope Peterson starts working with his staff on their groundball inducing stuff.

      • gameball says:

Not to worry; we’ll still be sitting at sea-level, in coastal high humidity. I think Citi Field is meant to have the same forgiving power-alley dimensions as Shea. And the new stadium is actually turned more into the prevailing wind off the bay, which blows from left to right field at Shea.

Although I’m hoping the new field is more sheltered from the wind than the Shea field (and the stands, as well!)

True about the Shea bias: A right-handed Robin Ventura would never have hit 30 HRs playing at Shea.

    • squad says:

      Francoeur is RH.

    • anais says:

Carlos Beltran is a righty power hitter when he faces a lefty. And while Reyes and Castillo aren’t power hitters, they both hit better (and for more power) from the right side.

  9. dancran says:

i’m not too thrilled that the weather shows it’s supposed to rain all day/night in Atlanta. Hope it doesn’t get rained out

    • Raditz says:

I am going to the game tomorrow. I hope the rain will just be over tonight. So, that both games can be played. It doesn’t look good though.

    • cbusmetsfan says:

Does WTBS not cover Braves games anymore? I want to their site and they look to be going National with other teams like ESPN. I guess this explains why Darling is doing games with them on Sundays. I thought that was weird the first time I saw it, thinking Darling was calling Braves games on Sundays. Oh well, one less outlet to watch the Mets on for us out of towners.

    • helicopter ben johnson says:

weather forecast says scattered tstorms 50% chance of rain this evening. anybody down in the dirty dirty?

  10. Wheelhouse19 says:

Just like Minute Maid park, minus the ski mountain in center field, and the stripper pole, and the choo choo train.

Minute Maid park is like a young skiier, whose into porn’s worst twisted nightmare.

    • saltzy007 says:

I couldnt have any less of a clue as to A. The relavancy or B. The meaning of that analogy if you put a gun to my head…

      I mean…so…the stadium is like a young skiier…rrrright….

and shes into porrrn…..and thers a nightmere thrown in there somwhere…

Did I catch a 9er in there….were you calling from a walkie talkie?

      • Wheelhouse19 says:

Minute maid has a hill in center field = skiiers use hills, mountains, etc.

Pole in the outfield = stripper pole, porn, etc.

        Choo choo trian = kid

Mix those all up and you get one wacked out dream / nightmare what have you. Guess it could have been written better.

        • mackey_sassers_arm says:

wheelhouse, this has been a waste of everyone’s time… thanks for your contribution.

    • cbusmetsfan says:

I understand the first part but cannot seem to quite grasp part B. Is there anything to grasp or did you just throw some words together in your post to confuse us all?

      • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Not sure if it’s intentional… but it kind of captures Minute Maid Park, which is less ” authentically quirky” (see Petco, built aroung an actual former warehouse) than a collection of imported architectural/entertainment gimmicks jammed together. Visually– and practically, since that pole/hill combo is a literal ankle-breaker for center-fielders– it makes about as much sense as that last super-mixed metaphor.

  11. dykstraw says:

good thing santana maine and perez don’t produce too many fly balls…

  12. Wheelhouse19 says:

By the way I just checked the extended Atlanta forecast. Foggy with drizzle right now, and scattered thunderstorms tonight 50% chance of rain, but it could be on and off….not steady showers until overnight.

I think they’d have to try and squeeze this one in, because tomorrow looks like a wash.

Frigging rain. One week in, and we have to deal with rains outs and make up dates.

    • shea_guevara says:

That’s too bad, because the Braves’ bullpen is already been worked like crazy. I was hoping the Mets could take advantage of that, but if they get a rainout, Atlanta will get some much needed rest for their relievers.

  13. cbusmetsfan says:

…my friend, Mark from SNY, took the following photos from the on-deck circle at Shea Stadium looking out towards center field…

    Name Dropper!

  14. batsinthepelfrey says:

actually i was in the stadium a month ago and what you can’t tell from matt’s photo is that there is a big 100 foot gap between the visitors bullpen and the giant kepspan sign on the light stantion (where you can see flushing bay from rf side). look at the overhead photos on the mets website (March Gallery #1) and you can see the open space. heyman was right, there will be a wind tunnel coming in from LF that will have no where to escape (except for the small gap in RF above the mets bullpen in front of the rotunda). Actually think it will make the park more pitcher friendly to all fields but especially in left.

  15. Lets go Mets says:

I don’t think a guy that hits the ball like Piazza, Wright…will have any problem in any wind-air current.

  16. metsgirl says:

i flew just south of the stadiums coming back from PSL 2 weeks ago, and it’s crazy how close citi is to shea- i said right away it’s gonna totally change the wind patterns. i have no idea how, but it must

  17. marvelousmarv says:

Hey Matt, you get my email about Citi Field and whether its more of a band box or a pitcher’s park.

  18. marvelousmarv says:

Hey, Citi is basically a stone throws away from Shea. Does anyone know how Shea will be knocked down? Cause if they blast it coudln’t it have consequences for Citi being so close? Wouldn’t the foundation and structure be compromised?

  19. saltzy007 says:

    Google Richard Sandomir….Shea….NY Times…

if you cant find if its on Loge13(dot) com’s page, few posts down…

Best article to date about how both teams are planning on demolishing the stadiums..

FYI….its gonna be with sledge hammers and whatnot….and all the rubble will continously be moved into the middle of the field, until there is no stadium left….the article will clear it all up…

  20. 1DoggLJ says:

Has Piazza’s 2000 WS Game 5, 9th Inning blast to left center even landed yet? I dont get it.

The few games that Moises Alou is back should be interesting, with him launching shots right into that corridor . . .
