By D.J. Short - Apr 5, 2008 3:22 pm

The Game :

Weather-permitting, the Mets (2-1) will take on Braves (1-3) this afternoon at Turner Field, starting at 3:55 pm.

The Lineup :

The Pitchers :

RHP John Maine makes his 2008 debut for the Mets. In 32 starts last season, Maine was 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA. In three starts vs. the Braves last year, he was 1-1 with a 3.93 ERA. Maine won his only career start at Turner Field last season (Aug. 31) yielding a single run on three hits over seven dominant innings, striking out eight. In seven spring starts, Maine was 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA.

RHP Tim Hudson (0-0, 2.57 ERA) takes the hill for the Braves. Hudson started Sunday night against the Nationals, allowing two runs on three hits over 7 IP while striking out three. He was 2-2 with a 3.33 ERA in four starts vs. the Mets last season.

The Notes :

David Wright carries a 20-game hitting streak into today’s game.

A number of Mets have had success against Hudson including Carlos Delgado, who is 16-for-50 (.320) with 6 HR and 12 RBI lifetime, while Carlos Beltran is 17-for-51 (.333) with 3 HR and 11 RBI.

Over the first four games of the season, Chipper Jones is 8-for-18 (.444) with a homer and six RBI.

How’s the weather in Atlanta? Are they gonna get this game started on time?

    • mattygreen says:

is the picture on anyone else’s mlb.tv account crapping out (again)?

    • plummetdown says:

maine is getting squeezed….the ump needs to go

    • drprpimp813 says:

The announcers keep on talking about last season, its getting pretty annoying.

“Im just yanking your chain,” said one of the announcers. I found that pretty “weird”

  2. irish_eagle says:

Weather.com doesn’t sound too bad for Atlanta this afternoon. Supposedly cloudy and 61 at the moment.

I wish I had faith that Delgado will get untracked and produce even close to what he did in 2006. I think that ship has sailed, however.

    • Hazmet says:

And I thought cloudy and 61 was the outlook and age of El Duque. Just kidding….Let’s start this game.

  3. cousinrk says:

Oh great, Mark Grace, probably one of the worst announcers in the game on Fox’s pre-game. Great call Fox.

  4. ccmetfan says:

Mets gotta win, phillies lost and nationals are losing

    • metsdude13 says:

Really? On the fourth game of the season? Are you seriously scoreboard watching?

  5. sincekindergarten says:

Cheer up! The Phillthies just blew a game they were leading into the bottom of the eighth! They scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, which might have made a winner of Adam Eaton, but the Reds put one across in the bottom of the eighth, then scored the game-winner against Chad Durbin, with one out in the bottom of the ninth . . .

  6. backinbusiness says:

If anyone wants 2 (fairly crappy) tickets to the April 12 home game (Figgy? Pelf? Santana?), I have 2 extras in UR7 Row Q that I can’t sell. Will forward the email tix to the first fan who wants them (free).

  7. Don Logan says:

Sounds like Buck & McCarver learned Spanish. They’ve never sounded so good!

  8. darkstar73 says:

ugh, that was a K on Teixeira right there at 1-2, but either way, Maine is throwing gas right now…

  9. sincekindergarten says:

    He’s hit 96 mph . . . twice. McCann just got under that one, else it’d be 4-0 . . .

  10. Steve.P says:

    O-F-F-E-N-S-E!!

  11. theperfectgame says:

Is there any way to get a boxscore on mlb.tv? It was there in spring training, but it’s no longer there. I mean, no big deal, but it’s be nice.

    • backinbusiness says:

yeah just go to “scoreboard” on mlb.com

    • skyking26 says:

Sounds like McCarver and Buck are in mid-season form.
      Braves/Cox bandwagon and downplaying/anti-Mets.
Gotta Love these guys –who drop-in, see/do 5 Met gms a
year and are authorities. Plus, nice to see Met pitchers not
      getting strike calls in atlanta.

  12. Slob says:

    Tim McCarver is a dope.

  13. The Glider says:

Woah, Delgado running from 1st to 3rd! That’s right Tim, Delgado is NOT a fast runner.

  14. The Glider says:

    Yes. Tie game.

  15. gomets6091 says:

wow, Delgado is lucky the ump was watching that ball go past Chipper, b/c that could have been runner interference…

…and they just got lucky again. But I’ll take it! 1-1

    • The Glider says:

I don’t think that would have been called. The throw was off the the left and came into Delgado’s path. He was fine.

      • gomets6091 says:

you’re probably right, but it just didnt look like Delgado made any effort to avoid barreling into Chipper. Not that I mind at all.

    • wolverine193 says:

That run made up for the non-strikeout on Tex

  16. Steve.P says:

Nice slide by Church, too. Get em suckas.

  17. mo_vaughns_tummy says:

anyone else think delgado is looking better now than last season?

    • theperfectgame says:

      Couldn’t look worse… so, yes.

    • The Glider says:

Yes, but it’s early. I would like to see him hit some ropes and not strike out repeatedly on high/inside pitches. Let’s see after 20 games.

  18. wolverine193 says:

If Delgado had bull-rushed Chipper into oblivion he would’ve had my heart forever

  19. KinersKornerman says:

Delgado was ni the basebath. If anything it was Chipper who interfered with him.

  20. mrose says:

this ump is killing me already
    WTF?

  21. mrmet it is says:

Looks like Smoltz is still going to pitch tomorrow meaning the Mets will miss their chance to pummel Glavine this weekend.

    God I hate him!

    • The Glider says:

1/3 inning. 7 runs. Simply the worst Mets game I ever watch. And I’ve been watching them since 1968.

      • skyking26 says:

Glavines last dat start was w/o question the worst big game start I’ve seen by ANY pitcher in almost 40yrs
following this gm. day to day.

    • irish_eagle says:

That’s what Howie said before the game. Smoltz vs Santana tomorrow. Apparently Smoltz doesn’t like pitching in Colorado, where the Braves play next.

      • wolverine193 says:

BS, do you honeslty think that Cox was going to let the Mets dodge Smoltz?

    • backinbusiness says:

BS. I’m sure they moved Glavine once they saw he’d be up against Santana.

  22. MetsUKfan says:

    Maine is over throwing.

He should use the stadium while he uses up his adrenaline.

    • The Glider says:

Yeah, he’s gotta settle down. He has great stuff today, but the location is off.

  23. mrmet it is says:

    Got Hiiiiiiiiim

  24. darkstar73 says:

big K there, Maine just needs to settle in these next few innings, he’ll be fine, he just seemed a little too pumped-up from the beginning.

  25. skyking26 says:

Unbelievable!-Rosenthal is the ” voice of reason”?
and WE”VE got question marks? But the Braves wont miss
    andruw jones’ defense/power, Renterias leadership,
smoltz is already hurt,Glavine is done AND still after 20yrs
they start the yr w/ no proven closer? But we have ???

  26. wolverine193 says:

I get the bad feeling Hudson is about to get into Cadillac mode.

  27. wolverine193 says:

I’m SOOOOOOO sick of people caring about what opponents think with Reyes’ mannerisms. For once I agree with Joe Buck. Hey McCarver, the Mets didn’t lose to the Marlins in the last game of the season because of their cockiness, they lost because Tom Glavine is an abortion.

    • theperfectgame says:

“So they’ll try harder because they don’t like your handshakes”

You’ve got to be kidding me…

    • gomets6091 says:

isn’t Joe Buck the guy who reacted to Randy Moss’ mooning celebration like he murdered little children on the field?

  28. mrose says:

    maine needs a quick inning

also, that may have been one of the best things Joe Buck ever said..which isn’t hard to do..

When McCarver was talking about the handshakes… Buck is like “so I get it, your saying if they don’t like your handshakes, they will try harder” and i’m pretty sure he was being sarcastic

  29. mrosey says:

they need to get rid of Tim McCarver for his own sake. He is so wrong factually (”that 13-0 loss in the second to last game of the season”) and he’s a mumbling wreck.

  30. MetsUKfan says:

uh oh just saw peterson on the phone to the bullpen.

    • theperfectgame says:

Well, Maine’s up around 50 pitches through 2 innings. They’re bound to be talking sooner than later…

  31. MikeinSS says:

I think the Braves switched Glavine and Smoltz because (a) they feel they have a little better chance against Santana with Smoltz on the mound; (b) Glavine’s stuff is much better suited for Coors Field; (c) they wanted to give Smoltz a “marquee” start at home in a big game for his first appearance, as opposed to in Colorado on a day when it’s supposed to snow; and (d) Smoltz gets what he wants on this team, and he wanted to start Sunday.

btw, I’m a Braves fan, but I come in peace. I agree the Fox guys are touting the Braves really big… which is unusual for us. Rightly or wrongly, the Braves seem to be the darlings of the tv sports networks this year.

    • gomets6091 says:

you don’t think it has anything at all to do with Glavine ducking the Mets? Considering the way he used to pitch against the Braves, I wonder if Cox is afraid Glavine will pitch equally poorly against the Mets.

      • MikeinSS says:

I really don’t think so. Did you see the grin on Smoltz’ face when Fox was asking him how it worked out? Smoltz is starting because Smoltz wants to start. I happen to agree with the decision, but who cares.

I don’t buy into Cox as the greatest mgr of all time, but one thing he does pretty well: he always expects his guys to succeed and assumes they will (sometimes that’s a weakness too). I don’t think it would cross his mind that Glavine would get pounded by the Mets (even though he might).

  32. MetsUKfan says:

i wonder if maine is on a pitch count?

  33. wolverine193 says:

Mets finally start the season and Maine loses his control, lovely….

    • theperfectgame says:

Well, he had the one bogus walk in the first, and then this one. He hasn’t gone Oliver Perez (the Mr. Hyde version) on us. I’m not worried about him over the long haul.

  34. mrose says:

    this is ridiculous
Maine may have gas today but he doesnt have IT

    • MetsUKfan says:

hitting 97 on the gun earlier.

too much. no movement. the ball is flattening and is very hittable. lucky the atmosphere looks damp. so its not carrying.

its beginning of the season so its probably expected.

    • irish_eagle says:

Howie says that the guns are very generous in Atlanta by about 4 MPH.

  35. mrose says:

it’d be wonderful to get a double play here

  36. darkstar73 says:

eh, he almost got out of it, not really a bad pitch, just good hitting

  37. The Glider says:

I think he’s got movement, it’s just up in the strike zone.

  38. theperfectgame says:

    Crud

  39. mrmet it is says:

maybe a week long layoff is too long for Maine

  40. wolverine193 says:

GOD, I hate thing f’ing Braves

  41. rockets212 says:

his off speed stuff if fine but his fastball is just way up, whenever he tries to get it down he bounces it and he just cant find that slot, good things the bullpen is completely rested

  42. ccmetfan says:

i actually like these braves more than the phillies

  43. theperfectgame says:

Other than Chipper’s first single and the ball Beltran had to go back on, Maine hasn’t been hit hard. I mean, he needs to throw fewer pitches, but all things considered he’s looked decent today. Not his best stuff, but not bad.

  44. theperfectgame says:

Nice play by Castillo. Now let’s give Maine a nice loooooong break, fellas. Wright, Beltran, Delgado.

  45. MetsUKfan says:

mets have to get into the braves pen. take more pitches. work the counts.

    Hudson is dominating.

  46. wolverine193 says:

    That’ll be a mute…

  47. theperfectgame says:

74 pitches through 3 for Maine. The bullpen’s gonna get some work in today.

  48. Charlie says:

maine”s out after next time thru the top of the order if he can’t get the ball done.

  49. mookie says:

Maine has to grow up fast. Every single time there is someone on base he gets nervous and throws the ball everywhere. I tolerated that junk the past two seasons, because young pitchers need a learning curb, but now he has to show up. He better grow some confidence soon because otherwise we are in big trouble. He has the stuff, it’s all mental now.

  50. CornellMetsFan says:

maine has great stuff but his problem is, and has been, putting away batters. thats the reason his pitch counts are so high and he rarely goes 7+.

  51. wolverine193 says:

Fox + Braves = Tedious John Smoltz interview

    • theperfectgame says:

Why are they even showing the game? Isn’t everyone just interested in what “Smoltzie” has to say? I don’t get it. Why aren’t they stopping the game so that everyone can learn from and laugh with good ol’ “Smoltzie”?

  52. wolverine193 says:

Hudson is cadillacing, Mets only hope is to stop the Braves from scoring and try to come back late in the game against their bullpen.

  53. theperfectgame says:

Good AB from Beltran. We need more of that. A bunch of pitches and a hard line drive. The runs will follow.

  54. wolverine193 says:

    Hey Smoltz, grow some hair

  55. darkstar73 says:

man, that’s a disheartening at bat, beltran fouls off a bunch of pitches, gets his pitch finally at 3-2, and hits it hard, but right to center.

    • backinbusiness says:

yeah, well the delgado chaser didn’t help. he has become so predictably depressing.

      • Wheelhouse19 says:

He is taking more pitches this year….but when he gets a good one, itts always a chopper or groundball.

Its like he has lot all his slugging power whatsoever. If that continues, Church will have to take over the 5 hole….much more power, and a much better swing.

    • MetsUKfan says:

i thought that was a great at bat by beltran even though he lined out.

hudson 70 pitches through 4. he won’t go 6 either if the mets can work him a bit more.

      • Wheelhouse19 says:

great at bats are nice when your team is up by 7 runs.

Great at bats don’t get you on base or rbi’s….which frankly at this point, is all that matters.

        • MetsUKfan says:

not if you accept you are not going to hit home runs of a ground ball pitcher on top of his game having already started once. plus its raining so the ball is not flying.

        • darkstar73 says:

wheelhouse, what are you talking about? good at bats are exactly what get you on base and get you rbi’s, its just sometimes players make outs, I know, its hard to accept, but this team will lose games.

  56. theperfectgame says:

Okay, Johnny, quick inning, 1-2-3. You don’t need to strike everyone out. You’ve got good stuff. Let ‘em try to hit it.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

i think this Brave lineup is the best in the NL. there are no easy outs like the Mets(Castillo,Delgado,Schneider, sometimes Reyes)

      • Wheelhouse19 says:

At some point, Willie is going to have to drop Delagdo once and for all. He may get singles, but he has no power at all. You can’t have that in the 5 spot.

        Hurry back Moises.

  57. Wheelhouse19 says:

Delgado 3-1 count, gets a pitch down the pipe and weakly grounds out to 2nd. How bout putting one over the fence Carlos? Our 8 hitter has more power.

3,4,5…….nothing doing. All well and good that you demolish the Marlins, but eventually some hits vs the Braves would be nice.
That means you Reyes and Wright. Lets try and get the ball out of the infield.

    • mrose says:

      yea..
not for nothin, but we are facing the best pitcher we have all year..
his pitch count isn’t perfect either…lets hope to get him outta there sooner than later

    • darkstar73 says:

yeah, what’s with this, the Mets offense is pathetic! booo!

      • MetsFanInVegas says:

They’re facing Tim Hudson, an ace, you can’t expect the Mets to bash every pitcher

  58. Charlie says:

    maine is a belly itcher…

  59. Charlie says:

maine throws 1,500 pitches in 6 inning effort…1,200 balls.

  60. Wheelhouse19 says:

I agree with Mookie. I love John Maine, and he looks like hes in total command when no ones on base.

As soon as runners are on….he turns into a 15 year old, loses all control, and falls apart. He NEVER bears down and gets out of a potentially big inning.

Time to grown up John. Also might want to figure out a way to get Larry out.

  61. Charlie says:

    tim just said, “good wood.”

  62. Charlie says:

bye, bye johnny. thanks for a horrible effort.

  63. Wheelhouse19 says:

Maine is gutless. Get him out o f there. Waiting for everyone telling me how great he pitched in spring training.

    DOESN’T MATTER!

This guy can’t get anyone out with men on base. Complete meltdown. God forbid we get one easy inning.

Atlanta is drilling the ball all over the field. Mets can’t put a ball in the outfield.

    • darkstar73 says:

wow, over reacting a bit? its one start, one start, and complete meltdown?

    • Koko says:

It’s not just when guys are on base. Logic would suggest that Maine is struggling keeping guys off of base to begin with, then it comes down to struggling even more when he does put a guy on base.

If he never put guys on base he’d be just fine. Too bad he can’t do that.

It’s his first start. Brad Penny gave up 4 runs too (yes there is a difference). I have a feeling Dodger fans aren’t jumping ship on him yet.

Maybe we should have gotten Dontrelle Willis.

    • gomets6091 says:

      that’s it! Season’s over….let’s all go home.

Calm down man. Maine had a bad outing, but he’ll be fine. I still expect him to have a great season. The Braves are good, it’s raining, and he just didn’t have it today.

    • theperfectgame says:

Oh come on. Aren’t you being a little dramatic? They don’t have an extra base hit today and several of their hits have been bloops or seeing-eye grounders. Maine hasn’t been as effective as we’re used to, but a complete meltdown? I don’t think so.

    • mrose says:

i’m not sure about you wheelhouse..cause honestly..i don’t remember ever seeing you on here until like 2 days ago
but some of you people are the most ridiculous fairweather fans ever
the guy is allowed to have a bad game…hopefully he only goes up from here but WOW
      were down 4-1…now 13-0
We have santana tomorrow and a day off Monday so if we blow through the bullpen, we’ll be ok and if we can get to the ATL bullpen, you never know!
Jesus, the guy goes 15-10 last year and gets no love

  64. oleosmirf says:

is it just me or is maine very predictable??

i mean every time he gets deep into a count or there are men in base its fastball away

  65. Don Logan says:

Maine staying true to form vs. above .500 teams. He’s picking up right where he left off last season. There’s a reason Willie had him as the #4 coming out of the gate.

    • darkstar73 says:

wow, some of you are amazing, its like a week ago everyone loves Maine, and now he has one bad start, and everyone jumps off the bandwagon, its like Maine’s season as a whole has been decided upon by this one start.

      • theperfectgame says:

Didn’t you know that unless you throw a complete game one-hitter or better you suck? Jeez, get with the program!

      • theperfectgame says:

I mean, did you even see Johan “Collosal Bust” Santana on Opening Day? He gave up TWO runs and even a WALK! Sigh, if only we still had Ruben Gotay and Brian Bannister…

    • MetsUKfan says:

its only his first start. just over hyped today. better that then being slow on the fast ball. i don’t think its a problem at all.

  66. ccmetfan says:

two on, no outs for mets

  67. mrmet it is says:

your out of your mind. its his first start after a week of rest….he will be fine. 15 game winner at a minimum.

you dont like Maine, go root for another team.

  68. gomets6091 says:

way to take one for the team Brady…..now come on Jose

  69. Koko says:

    Bases loaded Jose. . . .

  70. gomets6091 says:

    WTF THAT WAS BULLS*&T

  71. jsr530 says:

It’s one bad start – nothing to get your panties in a bunch. Some guys get throw off by a change in routine and he was supposed to pitch last night.

Let’s hope Jose can do something here.

    • Don Logan says:

yea and some guys can’t beat teams with winning records. He did have an ERA over 5.00 in the 2nd half last season and then to start today’s game this way does not make it easy for me to fluff it off as just 1 bad Maine start. I hope that’s the case but like I said before, he’s the #4 for a reason and the people on here that have annointed him the #2 already- he clearly has to earn it.

  72. darkstar73 says:

wow, f the umps, they better over turn this

  73. mrmet it is says:

worst call ive ever seen. are you kidding me???

    • jsr530 says:

      what happened?

      • gomets6091 says:

bases juiced, Reyes hit a low liner out to center, the ball clearly bounced but Kotsay trapped it. Ump signalled the ball was caught. Church, who was on 3rd, went back to the bag, but Pagan kept running. Braves threw the ball to 2nd to “double up” Pagan.

Randolph went out to argue, and now they’re overturning the call and bringing the Braves out onto the field. I don’t think the Umps realize Pagan passed Church.

    • darkstar73 says:

worst call ever, are you kidding me? they overturned it, but worst call i’ve seen in a while.

  74. oleosmirf says:

my question is why doesnt Willy use 1 guy like Sosa or Figueroa for a few innings instead of 4 different guys for 1 inning each

  75. ccmetfan says:

    bulls**t

  76. mo_vaughns_tummy says:

two horrible calls in two games? must be a joke

  77. mrose says:

WOW THEY HAVE TO OVERTURN THAT!!

  78. CornellMetsFan says:

get ejected, willie. show some heart and fire up your squad

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

Or just keep your cool and explain to them why they reverse the call. Or he could do what you want and not get his point across, but hey, he would have “fired up” his team.

Way to keep your cool Willie.

  79. mrmet it is says:

    reverse the call? wow

  80. dwrightisgod says:

wow you never see them do that

however that was the worst call i’ve ever seen

  81. theperfectgame says:

    YEAH!!

  82. jsr530 says:

    WHAT HAPPENED?!!!!

  83. theperfectgame says:

holy crap, i did NOT see that reversal coming

  84. Steve.P says:

*F* yeah. Now let the runner score from second.

  85. MetsUKfan says:

what the hell is cox arguing about. disgrace.

    • CornellMetsFan says:

valid point. when youre wrong, youre wrong. get off the field and be gracious you got what you got

  86. CornellMetsFan says:

instant replay should be introduced in baseball!

  87. Mookie 1986 says:

I would love to be able to watch just one game without having to yell at my television.

    JUST ONE!!!

  88. CornellMetsFan says:

id like to add, what the heck are the base runners doing!? if youre the 3rd base coach, you cant let that happen

    • gomets6091 says:

well, Alomar saw the ball bouce, so he was waving Pagan in; Church saw the ump signal a catch, so he went back. It’s excusable I think

  89. dwrightisgod says:

common sense should be introduced to umpires

    that or glasses

  90. mrmet it is says:

just strike out castillo so wright can hit a Grand Slam.

  91. cousinrk says:

They keep talking about Pagan passing Church but that’s only valid if the original call stands up. The umps changed the call so what happened after that doesn’t matter. Geez, what a mess

  92. JR. says:

Pagan would have passed church even if they got the call right in the first place????? are you kidding me….church was watching the ump and pagan was watching the play, church would have scored by the time pagan rounded third if the umps got the call right in the first place.

i cant take these announcers, im muting the game

  93. mrmet it is says:

Someone should have run into the Braves dugout and punched Glavine in the face during that distraction!

  94. Steve.P says:

Willie came out arms flailing and got the job done.

  95. theperfectgame says:

If it had been called a trap, Church would have scored with Pagan on his heels. So if they had gotten the call right initially, Pagan would NOT have passed Church.

That said, it was bad baserunning by both Pagan and Church. Church should have been tagging up and Pagan should not have passed him.

  96. mrmet it is says:

shut up bobby, Maine hasnt gotten that pitch all game

  97. theperfectgame says:

    haha Hudson’s bitching

  98. gomets6091 says:

Can we agree to a 2 month moratorium on complaining about Willie not getting “fired up” and arguing during games, now that he actually got a call reversed, which almost NEVER happens in baseball?

  99. theperfectgame says:

    a run scores, 4-3

  100. mrose says:

i wish Wright would have taken a pitch or two

    • Steve.P says:

Yeah, the didn’t exactly capitalize on the reversed call. I think if the bullpen holds up we got this game.

    • MetsUKfan says:

thats what i mean. beltran is doing that. he is relaxed. thats why he does so well in post season.

wright hasn’t been all through the game.

seems over anxious just like maine today.

  101. ccmetfan says:

    shouldve been 4-4

    • Charlie says:

why 4-4? it was 4-1 when reyes drove in one run to get to 4-2, the castillo drove in a run with a ground out, which made it 4-3. where does the 4th run come from?

      • gomets6091 says:

I think he’s assuming if the Mets had gotten 2 runs on that play, which was likely without the blown call, then they would have gotten 4 in the inning, but I don’t think there’s anyway Schneider makes it to 3rd, so he wouldn’t have scored on the groundout, so it would have been 4-3 no matter what.

  102. Mookie 1986 says:

Awful. We should be watching a 4-4 ball game here.

  103. Charlie says:

    juuuust a bit outside.

  104. mrmet it is says:

Joe Smith is DISGUSTING. If he can be good again this year, look out!

  105. metsdude13 says:

Joe Smith is a totally different pitcher. He’s a sidearmer now, not a submariner.

  106. mrmet it is says:

Either way, he should be devastating against right-handed hitters.

  107. Wheelhouse19 says:

would have liked a single by Wright there.

Reyes on 2nd….we’d be up 5-4.

Either way, these umps are so bad I’m sure it will come back to screw us either way.

    • Charlie says:

hey, they got the call right, so how bad could they be? when was the last time we got robbed (in ATL, no less), and got the call reversed in our favor.

  108. darkstar73 says:

beltran having good at bats, good thing to see, when he’s patient, he hits.

  109. CornellMetsFan says:

double play or strikeout from delgado right here

  110. jsr530 says:

Mets are going to win – their bullpen is crap.

  111. mrmet it is says:

why does beltran not steal 2nd now and everytime….come on delgado is going to ground out to 2nd base.

  112. Steve.P says:

    Hit and run.

  113. mrmet it is says:

    run Carlos run

  114. mrmet it is says:

GREAT NOW ITS STARTING TO RAIN. YOU KNOW THEY’LL CALL THIS GAME NOW THAT ITS OFFICIAL AND THE BRAVES HAVE THE LEAD.

    GOTTA TIE IT UP NOW!

    • MetsUKfan says:

if they do that this game will be forever known as the one that the umpires blew a very easy call.

don’t think they will allow that.

  115. ryankobayashi says:

You know, I really forgot how much I hated this team. I mean Bobby Cox complaining about balls and strikes, the f&$%ing Chop, the fans that only show up during the playoffs. Yes, I really hate the Braves!

    Go General Sherman!!!!

    • njmatt says:

They don’t even show up for the playoffs. They rarely sell out home playoff games in the nlds

    • Bravesfan says:

      Nice,

Bringing the civil war into baseball game. An Army burns cities leaves thousands of civilians homeless and you believe this is a good thing. There are lots of gov’ts around the world lookng for guys like you.

  116. ccmetfan says:

battle of the bullpens about to commence

  117. mrmet it is says:

    Exactly!

    Reasons to hate the Braves:

    Bobby Cox
    Chipper’s son Shea
    Brian Jordan
Andruw Jones and his fair smile
    JOHN ROCKER
    Tom Glavine
the list goes on and on

  118. Charlie says:

    pls k gotay…

  119. Charlie says:

    f**k

  120. gomets6091 says:

that update about Dontrelle and the Tigers made me feel a little better. I hope they lose 100 games

  121. Charlie says:

i hate gotay now…just realized he’s the enemy now.

  122. mookie says:

Hopefully, the braves pen is as poor as advertised. Reyes has to get on base and create some runs.

  123. darkstar73 says:

liking how Willie is using Show here

  124. Steve.P says:

Gotay- the new Mets killer (?)

    • MetsUKfan says:

yeah and he will call his daughter citi.

      pls. gotay is no chipper.

    • jimyager says:

SHOW BLOWS !!! Why does Willie put him in a one run game with a runner on? As soon as he came in my wife asked me the score and I said “It’s about to be 5-3″ and BOOM it was. This guy really sucks.

  125. gomets6091 says:

I hate McCarver…..its not a sac bunt if he can beat it out you jacktard

  126. theperfectgame says:

he’s not sacrificing… these guys are retarded

  127. theperfectgame says:

    should’ve sac bunted

    (jk)

  128. darkstar73 says:

ugh…that’s disheartening. Mets need to get at least a run in that inning

  129. theperfectgame says:

and that’s 4 runners left in scoring position for Wright…

  130. Mookie 1986 says:

Thus far a carbon copy of last season.

Reyes continues to hit em in the air, and the heart of the order is unable to string together hits on a regular basis with runners on the pads.

    • darkstar73 says:

so are you referring to the previoius 3 games as well, or are you saying that this one game is a carbon copy of last season? Either way, I definitely feel like this one game, this early in the season, has already defined this season. There’s really no reason to watch anymore, why even let the season play out? We already know enough to know the season is over.

      • Wheelhouse19 says:

He’s saying….its very similar to last year. THE MARLINS dont count….they are hardly a major league team.

These are the games Wright needs to step up and shine. He’s left way too many men on today.

The bottom of the order has gotten on all day, and the top and heart of the order haven’t done anything.

Castillo and Wright ground outs all day long. It’d be nice if someone could hit the ball to the outfield. Just once.

        • darkstar73 says:

its one game man, one game, the best players have 0-4’s you know, the greatest teams do lose.

  131. theperfectgame says:

Wow, 18 hits total today, all singles

  132. Wheelhouse19 says:

Love ya David but you havn’t hit the ball out of the infield all day…..and are leaving too many men on base.

Your supposed to come up big vs Atlanta….at least once out of 4 chances. Could be a 5-5 game with a single there.

  133. mrmet it is says:

Yeah your right…we should probably trade him now. maybe we can get jorge cantu or pedro feliz.

  134. wolverine193 says:

Death, Taxes, Braves beating the Mets

I don’t even let myself get bothered by it anymore.

  135. wolverine193 says:

McCarver has a new book? Can you say ghostwritten?

  136. backinbusiness says:

that shot of glavine “reading” mccarver’s book would make a nice target in the mets locker room.

  137. rM teM says:

The most incompitent umpiring I’ve ever seen, But what do I know, I’ve only been a baseball fan for 40 years.

  138. wolverine193 says:

Just walk this clown and get it over with Sosa

  139. mrmet it is says:

    why no feliciano?

  140. MudvilleNine says:

Thing is you never would have heard of Tim McCarver if it wasn’t for Steve Carlton. He did nothing but catch one of the greatest lefties in the game and now he thinks he’s mister know-it-all.

  141. dwrightisgod says:

    f u sosa

  142. gomets6091 says:

    well that’s that

    • MudvilleNine says:

Now you know why he’s not a starter. He has a slider and thats it. One pitch, and there’s no pitch that travels farther then a hanging slider.

  143. ocmetsfan says:

Can anyone help me understand why we paid castillo $20MM when we could have kept Gotay for nothing? Why are the Mets so bent on spending money for such little returns.

If we kept all of our young players we have Jacobs, gotay, Reyes, wright, gomez, milledge, bell ,bannister, kazmir, floures, mora, keppinger and I know ther are others. Thats not a bad group to build on.

    • wolverine193 says:

Because Omar doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. That’s the real answer, I’m sure people will chip in with others.

    • dwrightisgod says:

letting go of gotay made no sense. you can tell me all you want about how he has no options and hes not versatile. the fact is the kid was young and looks like he might be able to hit.

however i’d rather not have gomez and get the best pitcher in the game who happens to be under 30.

    • Nails says:

Yes … I really wish we could build on 36 year old Mora.

The team you mention above would win about 50 games.

      • ocmetsfan says:

My point is, that a core of good young players sych as those would cost the mets $10MM maybe. Thats leaves them with $110MM to buy another 40 games, I think thats reasonable.

    • Hazmet says:

One reason he also signed Castillo is he’s buds with Johan and he helped sell Santana behind the scenes on NY. For that alone he was worth it.

  144. Charlie says:

    okay, so, that sucked.

  145. AdrianoMG6 says:

lol way to keep Sosa in there Willie! ur in midseason form already!

  146. ntlrock1 says:

    Willie is a damn idiot.

Just gonna throw that out there

  147. Charlie says:

    i hate pedro

  148. Wheelhouse19 says:

Nothing ever changes. Not only do the Braves have to beat us as usual, they have to embaress us.

Hope everyones not only relying on Johan. John Maine was bad today the offense was not clutch. And the bullpen didn’t step up in a tight game situation.

This is shades of 07 in some respect….but the Mets just never ever seem to stand up vs the Braves.

    Better win handily tomorrow.

    • almar1965 says:

Are you serious? Do you have short term memory?

In 2006 the Mets emasculated the Braves both at Shea AND at Turner field, including late in the season. Last year, they split the season series including winning a series late in the year (Pelfrey anyone?)

Stop reacting as if these are the Braves vs. Mets circa late 90’s early 00’s.

The Mets have been able to handle the Braves pretty well, even at Turner. So they lose this game, big deal. It is the 4th game of the friggin’ season.

      GEEZ!

    • Hazmet says:

All we have to wait for is for Chipper to go down for 3 weeks like he does every year and that will be that. Add 2 Old Starters and Hampton already gone I just can’t get that worked up about Atlanta this early in the year regardless of how they’ve tortured us in the past. I’ll wait to see how there problems develop vs. ours (Pedro…..) and go from there. Again, it’s the 4th game of the year.

  149. AdrianoMG6 says:

The whole WORLD could see that Sosa didn’t have his command and needed to be pulled!! the whole world, except for Willie Randolph! next batter, boom GRAND SLAM!!
Willie is on the Yanks Payroll !!

  150. MetsUKfan says:

bad day all round. forget it.

tomorrows a new game. everyone was too anxious apart from beltran.

  151. icedrake523 says:

To Willie: Have someone throw intentionally at Kelly Johnson.

  152. AdrianoMG6 says:

Mets will be outa the race by the allstar break!! Minaya better wake the hell up or else i’m gona lose faith in him completely if Willie is not FIRED this year!

    • jose--jose-jose-jose says:

      Damn, our fans are moody.

      • almar1965 says:

Actually by the sounds of it, seems like our fans are idiots. Actually the term “fan” is being loosely thrown around.

Sorry, had to say it, couldn’t holdback any longer.

  153. We will win tomorrow..we are still ahead of ATL and Phi ….lol

  154. darkstar73 says:

i love when after one game, the 4th game of the season, Mets fans are already ready to describe the course of the entire season, and some are even willing to say its over.

    • bullpen sucks says:

Well if Willie and the bullpen keep it up the year is over.

      • darkstar73 says:

our bullpen, if you watched any of these games, has been pretty good, aside from one inning from Sosa. But please, if you want to declare the season over now, you need to ask yourself why you’re even a fan.

        • bullpen sucks says:

The bullpen will do exactly what it did last year and will not be able to hold a lead or keep us close.

        • AdrianoMG6 says:

lol u have no clue how to watch a game. Sosa should have been pulled! willie leaves guys in way to long and then they implode and the game is outa reach after! he’s done this numerous times last year and the year before and this year is no different. get a clue bro

        • darkstar73 says:

what? did I say that I thought Willie didn’t make a mistake? don’t tell me to get a clue when you don’t know even know what you’re talking about. Sosa shouldn’t have been in there to pitch to Kelly, but that doesn’t make the bullpen bad. I was saying that the bullpen hasn’t been bad. That’s not saying Willie made the right move. You get the clue…bro.

    • almar1965 says:

Because there are two possible reasons:

      1) It is the weekend and all of the 11 year olds have nothing better to do than to see their comments on a sports blog get noticed

      OR

      2) the mental ward got it’s computer privileges back

  155. Slippery Pete says:

Are some of you people serious?

This is the fourth game of the season. A loss here and the way the Mets played means nothing more than that the club will be 2-2.

    Everyone just relax.

    • Two-By-Four says:

Fans get emotional during games and post items they ordinarily would not. It’s one of the reasons I try not to post during games.

BTW what was Willie’s thought process in letting Sosa pitch to Johnson? Of course I assume that Willie has a thought process. :)

  156. backinbusiness says:

sometimes its harder to know whether I’m rooting more for the late inning comeback so that the mets win, or so that some of these bipolar posters will have to hang their heads.

  157. icedrake523 says:

I wish we had a power hitting left fielder who was healthy.

    • metzelaar says:

Yeah, I hate our left fielder driving in the most runs on the team without hitting a homer.

      Give it a rest, dude.

  158. dwrightisgod says:

    nice job angel

  159. mrmet it is says:

Are you serious…after today we can safely make the following assumptions…

John Maine will win 0 games this year and finish the season in the minors.
Jorge Sosa will be deported for lack of good relief work
David Wright will be forced to become a reality TV star as he has proven he can not hit in the clutch
Willie Randolph will be seen selling cocaine on 33rd st.

    • dwrightisgod says:

i could c willie talking people into doing coke

“just sniff some. it’ll get you into a nice little rhythm”

    • Two-By-Four says:

I suggest you bet the house on all of those and come back and tell us how it worked out. BTW Willie would sell the cocaine to an undercover cop named Chipper. :)

  160. bullpen sucks says:

Is it just me or does McCarver seem to have a grudge against the mets???

    • Charlie says:

i have always thought so after he was let go by the mets…

    • almar1965 says:

Actually the real question is whether anyone really cares about what McCarver says anymore?

Just ask Peter Griffin on Family Guy.

      • domosnacks5 says:

The real question is if anyone really cares about Family Guy?

        That show is awful

        • bullpen sucks says:

If you don’t like The Family Guy perhaps you are to uptight and should become a Yankees fan

  161. AdrianoMG6 says:

why aren’t my posts going through!! the site owner is now becoming a dictator! no willie badmouthing allowed here??

    • cgpublic says:

Perhaps you missed the memo from Matt. This site is actually an extension of SNY, which is owned by Sterling, i.e., the Wilpons.

  162. AdrianoMG6 says:

Mets fans who still make excuses for willie just have no clue how titles are won. they have no clue about the game and all the litle things that are needed in order to win.

  163. AdrianoMG6 says:

peace out phonies!! the real mets fans know that we won’t go anywhere until willie is gone.

  164. bullpen sucks says:

I told you the bullpen sucks

  165. Charlie says:

ok, i’m done. try again tomorrow.

  166. bullpen sucks says:

I’m going to put the NCAA game on now

  167. cgpublic says:

How bout dem Mets! Bring on Santana!

  168. grmetsfan says:

The rain out yesterday probably wasn’t very good for Maine, he was over throwing and didn’t have command of his pitches.

Also I don’t know if anyone else noticed this but Maine was throwing WAY too many fastballs, He has other good breaking stuff that he simply was not using enough. How do you expect to win a ball game by throwing 5 fastballs in a row!??

It reminded me of Pedro’s shortened start where he was throwing too many fastballs too and not enough breaking stuff. These guys need to mix it up, eventually other teams are going to catch on to it and Maine simply couldn’t get out of an inning with two outs.

I know Hudson is a ground ball pitcher but I mean c’mon now. These guys were not getting the ball out of the infield. Castillo grounded out every at bat, Wright grounds out 4 times. I know its early but how can you do that If you expect to win?

Lastly Willie left Sosa in there way too long, he’s always been prone to doing that. I see other managers that when their pitchers give up a run or two and there getting hit hard, the manager takes em out and cuts the bleeding. In a relief situation it’s obvious when the pitcher needs to be pulled and I find it astonishing that Willie couldn’t do that.

Hopefully Santana will go out there tomorrow and shut down the braves, I’ll be pretty disappointed heading to Shea on Tuesday knowing we just got swept in Atlanta.

  169. darkstar73 says:

man, sometimes I actually do wish it was ‘04, there wouldn’t be so many bandwagon fans from the ‘06 season with their Yankee fan like tendencies. The comments section at this site is getting harder and harder to stand, I can actually remember real conversations and discussions going on here, but those days are long gone.

    • darkstar73 says:

you know what really surprises me about some fans, is how they seemingly have no idea that baseball teams lose a lot of games.

      • Bobby Bones in SC says:

I just get quiet when everyone starts bashing everything.

I agree Maine was overthrowing and way too many fastballs. It wasn’t his day. It happens.

        What are the positives?
        Church continuess to impress
Pagan is really contributing well and coming through!
Beltran is starting to hit the ball HARD. His outs today were even hard hit balls.
Delgado is starting to look a little better
        Smith pitched well

McCarver gets on my nerves as well. It never ceases to amaze me that he keeps his job. I guess being Palmer’s catcher has given him a long term pass.

I’m looking forward to Santana sitting them down tomorrow!

      • Hazmet says:

Great threads all day Darkstar. Enough to make a great big Mets Banner. Stated everything I was thinking reading your input. Seriously, it’s the fourth game of the year, everybody needs to calm down. Just incredible. They’ve played 4 games with 2 having absolutely attrocious calls by the Umps (Beltrans HR in FLA, today’s fiasco) and they’ve kept fighting. I also love Willie was great early in the game for getting the call reversed and late in the game he was getting run out of town for not taking Sosa out. Yeah, he should have taken him out but really after that call early in the game and Show giving it back did anybody really think this was going to be our day. Atlanta + Fox = Cox; ‘Nough said. Shake it off and let’s get’em tomorrow.

      • KinersKornerman says:

darkstar, keep your good posts coming. Not all of us are bipolar goofs, and we appreciate the thought-provoking info from you and others on this site. .

    • dwrightisgod says:

yes very true. its one thing to get a little frustrated during a game but to think the season is over after one loss to the braves in april is just insanity.

      • MetsFanInVegas says:

I agree. I’m with you on hardly being able to withstand reading some of these comments

  170. Esko Da Greatt says:

biggest 2 out rally here guys

  171. ccmetfan says:

No need to worry. There’s still 158 games left. A good pitching performance will make this loss go away like when Ollie shut down the marlins
