Buzz: Tejeda Still Available
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 8, 2008 8:32 am

According to the Star-Telegram, Rangers RHP Robinson Tejeda, who was designated for assignment before the season started, is still available in a trade, “although there’s been little interest in him.”

Last week in Newsday, David Lennon wrote that the Mets have interest in Tejeda.

However, the same at ESPN.com, Jayson Stark wrote that the team had no interest in Tejada, nor David Wells or Jeff Weaver for that matter.

59 career starts for the Phillies and Rangers, the 25–year-old Tejeda is 14–17 with a 4.91 ERA.

He ended his rookie year with a 3.57 ERA in 26 starts for the Phillies, but has seen his ERA rise every season since.

…i think tejada would be a good pick up for the Mets, to add to Triple-A New Orleans…i don’t typically advocate acquiring these sorts of players, mostly because there are so many, and it would dominate my thought and blog…so i avoid it…tejeda, though, like Claudio Vargas, is just boiling over with raw talent…he has good command of his fastball, which can reach the high 90s…it’s his secondary pitches he struggles with…to me, he has hard-throwing reliever written all over him

considering that the AAA rotation through the first five games was: Bostick, Armas, Rudy Lugo, Joselo Diaz, and Brian Stokes.. I’d certainly look to sign Tejeda to a minor league deal once he clears waivers. He’s had some sparking outings, but its mostly been bad. And there isnt much in his minor league numbers to suggest he’ll ever be good. But a AAA fill in while Pedro and Duque are out makes sense.

I agree. Definitely bring him in. I live in Philly and remember seeing him pitch when he first came up. He has good stuff and a good demeaner. He hasnt been that great since, but what pitcher does do well as a texas Ranger?!?!
Bring him in and let the JACKET work with him.
    It definitely makes sense.

I for one in interested in the overall approach the Mets will have for todays game. I hope they haven’t forgotten about what the Phillies did to them last year. Here’s to hoping that the offense doesn’t sleep walk through this game making old man Moyer seem like the reincarnation of Cy Young. Speaking of has been prospects that the Mets generally pick up….I cant wait till they sign Woody Williams.

  4. redplanet4 says:

Just Fire Willie NOW! Why must we start this season in a hole. We all waited the all of last season for this team to show some heart and it folded. Willie is suppose to be our leader. He is not. The players dont respect him and if they did they wouldnt be playing like they didnt care. Losing 2 to the Braves was yet another example of how Willie needs to set up but doesnt. He cant manage a bullpen cant write a line-up Omar has to make it Willie proof… What does Willie bring to this organization? NIP NICHLE NADA…Willie Must go Willie must go! If we lose 2 out of the 3 to the philles its time for a change!

    • gomets6091 says:

and this has what to do with Robinson Tejeda, exactly?

    • kandiman says:

      Overreact much?

    • gomets6091 says:

Just fire Omar now. Johan Santana is only 1-1 and lost to the BRAVES, meanwhile he let Tom Glavine go, and Glavine is undefeated with an 0.79 ERA and just dominated the Rockies at Coors Field….it’s not his fault the Braves bullpen blew both of his starts! (note: this is sarcasm)

Do you see how ridiculous overreacting looks? Does anyone actually believe Glavine will outpitch Santana over the course of the season? Although I will go on record as saying Glavine’s performance in his first 2 starts makes me hate him even more. Where was that effort in September? Traitor…

      • wnymetsfan says:

Glavine started last year and the year before like that as well. It was the 2nd half of the season when his 40 something arm started to kills us probably due to fatigue.

        • gomets6091 says:

I know…it just pisses me off. Don’t forget that he started his Mets career just like he ended it. I was hoping he’d do the same with the Braves.

  5. bvaz says:

of all the names mentioned, this one sparks my interest the most. although, I wouldn’t expect much. but if we could get him cheap and sign him to a minor league contract, it never hurts to stockpile arms in the minors. he’s still young enough to at least give him a shot at redemption in the minors.

    • wnymetsfan says:

      bvaz,

I agree. He is young, 25, with a live arm. The kind of guy you take a flyer on as a AAA pitcher and see what you can do with him. You correct a few things and you have the next Ollie.

  6. QueensKings says:

After what the Phillies did to the Mets at the end of last season, let’s hope that they come into this game with a bitter taste in their mouths and put up some runs. Although, I would not be surprised if they made old man Moyer seem like the reincarnation of Cy Young. Speaking of old has been pitchers that The Mets are great at signing…I’m voting for Woody Williams…if he’s still available.

  7. nyjfanjmk says:

It really seems like Omar has an infatuation with sticking within the organization for backup plans (cough cough Nelson Figueroa). What would be the harm of signing a guy like Tejada to a minor league deal just in case Pelfrey sucks, Pedro doesn’t bounce back, Duque doesn’t bounce back, etc. It never hurts to have insurance at pitcher.

    • bvaz says:

I’m in favor to getting him and put him in AAA, but to be fair, he is not a free agent. who knows what Texas will want for him.

  8. dykstraw says:

tejada is more of a jacket project to me, he has great stuff but i don’t know if he is an immediate solution.

vargas is more of a stopgap but i don’t think his stuff is all that good – in fact i think he is steve trachsel reincarnated.

but then again, steve trachsel probably would have won us the division last year.

  9. dykstraw says:

(by the way, how long can texas leave tejada in limbo like this? don’t they have to put him on waivers soon if he is out of options?)

    • Bench5urvivor says:

I think being designated for assignment means that the team has 10 days to trade, release, or send to the minors.

The thing is, I think, Tejeda is in the same boat as Gotay was and is out of options/ will have to be subjected to waivers before the Rangers can send him to the minors.

This leads me to believe that the Rangers would have the same intent as the Mets did with Gotay: 1) risk the player on waivers, hoping he passes and put him in the minors or 2) the player is picked-up on waivers… so be it.

If I’m right, Tejeda will either be in the Rangers minor league affiliate or on another major league roster by waiver claim… i.e. not the Mets, although I would like him in New Orleans.

    • Nate W. says:

He is likely out of options, but doesnt have the service time to make his one choice. If he clears waivers Texas can send him to thier own AAA team. If a team trades for him, he likely has to stay on the 25 man roster or be DFA by his new team. I doubt Texas will lose him for nothing.

Once he clears waivers he does become much more tradable though, as he can go to minors or majors.

  10. nrmax88 says:

Tejeda is interesting. He has good stuff, a la a Maine or PErez, and the Rangers are obviously down on him. Seems like Omar’s m.o. Cheap high upside pickup and see what the jacket could do with him. I am all for it. Go out and try to get Daniel Cabrera too while youre at it. I cant help but believe with his stuff he will put it all topgether at some point, even if only for a year or two.

  11. Church says:

If the jacket can fix Perez, why not let him work with this guy?

  12. Metlomaniac says:

I’m highly dubious that Texas will allow a young pitcher with good stuff to get away for nothing. It’s not like the Rangers are awash in pitching! He’s definitely worth a look, but not for a prospect of any real value. It is also important to note that he pitched in Texas, which would inflate his ERA a bit.

  13. viktor06 says:

We should totally pick him…at 25 years he has still room and time to improve, besides a guy with a 95+MPH fastball with command is always useful to have…

Btw, isnt he something like Pelfrey? Age, stuff, struggling…
