In a post to Mets Today, Joe Janish cites a variety of picthers, such as Chan Ho Park to Dave Williams, as to why he is so panicked about the Mets fifth starter spot.
…i hear you, joe…my only request is that you go back and look at the fifth starter for other teams who have been successful…for instance, in 2006, when the Cardinals won the World Series, they got regular-season starts from Chris Narveson, Sydney Ponson and Jeff Weaver, who was 5–4 with a 5.18 ERA…
At Always Amazin, Matt Artus believes today is the day the Mets must wake up and answer the bell after having started this season with a 2–3 record.
…i don’t know about today, specifically, matt, but they would be wise not to lose this series against the Phillies…
Speaking of 2–3, Mets Walk-offs takes a look back at past 2–3 starts, specifically 1968, as well as 1986, when the Mets beat the Phillies in the sixth game of the season to get back to .500.
Lastly, for those who are new to the scene, MetsGrrl provides a Guide to Shea Stadium.

a quick look at the standings should give everyone reason to relax. Otherwise its looking like an Orioles v. Marlins WS…
I don’t know…
…I’m just not ready to hit the panic button yet. Even though because I live in Nashville and missed both Atlanta games (one due to blackout and the other, which was on Fox so even if i had the opportunity to watch it i might not have…mccarver and buck make me sick since the NLCS…because of other issues) from what I’ve seen so far, I prefer to focus on the positives:
Delgado, although without power, is hitting (I can’t believe I just typed that).
Pagan looks good.
Church is hitting LHP.
Johann is as advertised.
Beltran seems to have some urgency that i’ve never seen before.
Wright is the superstar we all knew he would be.
Sosa, other than that outing in Atlanta (again, which i only read about) looks pretty much the same as last year.
Oliver looks great…through one start…
And a few negatives, all of which were expected…
Reyes is young and still lets great pitchers (hudson, smoltz) use his aggressiveness against him…
I used to call Castillo “Father Time” but i think that moniker fits Petey as well…
Maine is not ready to shoulder the load of a true ace (although I still feel like we can pencil in 15-18 wins).
Oh well, I’m tired, I need to sleep before my shift starts again, but i’m setting my alarm to at least get the first inning of the home opener in before I gotta run.
We’ve got the guns, we just need to figure out how to use them.
Goodnight!
“We’ve got the guns, we just need to figure out how to use them.”
Very well said. I think this applies most specifically to the bullpen and fifth starter role.
Why is everyone freaking out? It’s a 2-3 start. We still have 157 games left. Just because we didn’t start 4-1 or 5-0, don’t go jumping off the bridge.
today we win 10-5
OK, Matt, I’ll answer the bell on this one.
Mets’ 2007 spot starters: 4 wins, 13 losses, 8.91 ERA
Cards’ 2006 spot starters: 9 wins, 8 losses, 5.24 ERA
(Weaver, Ponson, Narveson, B.Thompson.)
Cards won the NL Central by 1.5 games that year — ironically, it came down to the last weekend of the season as many remember.
I’ll try to find a better comparison for you ….
Hey guys, I remember a while back that Matt had put up on metsblog that the Phillies were planning a “take over Shea” day where they would TRY to fill up Shea with as many Phillie fans as possible. I was just wondering if todays game was supposed to be that day that they were planning on.
in 2005 shawn chacon and aaron small combined to go 17-3 for the yanks with an ERA around 3.
i don’t think we need 17-3, obviously, but we do need a lot better than 4-13 with a bullpen-destroying ERA of almost 9. in fact, the back end of the rotation was a problem in 2006 (we just overcame it) and it killed us more than anything else last year.b
matt, not sure making a comparison to the cardinals of 06 is really something that should calm us down. granted they were hot in the playoffs and won the WS but they also only won 83 games. im no psychic but ill bet anything i own that 83 games will not get you a playoff spot from the east this year.
I’ll say this every day, until they do something. But, the Mets needed to have too MANY starting pitchers going into the season. They needed young solid #3’s to be the #5, even if they had to overpay to get it.
You can’t rely on the Pelfrey’s, D. Williams and the El Duques of the world.
