Note: Where is Jose Reyes?
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 8, 2008 11:20 am

In his Three Up section from his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman points out that 92 different players have stolen a base in the major leagues this season – none of whom are Jose Reyes, who has reached base just seven times in 24 plate appearances this season while hitting .238.

i keep telling myself to not worry about reyes…a) because i believe he will bounce back from last season’s poor finish, and b), to me, pitching is what’s most important, not offense…that said, i am a bit worried…

…i have been saying that the Mets offense is essentially a house of cards built upon reyes…i still believe that…if Luis Castillo is doing what he does best, being Slappy McSingleton, then they Mets can survive a slump from reyes…the thing is, castillo isn’t hitting either, which is why the pain and worry is a bit deeper…

…they’ll get it together…i know they will…i just hope it happens soon, because, as we have all been saying for a while now, the last thing this team needs is a slow start…and that includes a slow start from reyes, who has a lot to prove this season

By the way, Reyes did not reach base on Sunday against the Braves. It was the first time he did not reach base at least once against the Braves since September 6, 2005 – 37 consecutive games ago.

In the 2005 game, John Smoltz was also the starting pitcher.

What’s more, the Braves won the game 3-1 at Turner Field, just like Sunday.

thanks to John Strubel for the statistical research, which has me a bit concerned and i do not even know whythis stat is all just coincidental and meaningless, but it feels full-circlish to me – and that inherently makes me uncomfortable…

The team hasn’t even played a full week of baseball yet. Now is not the team to start freaking out.

  2. Danny says:

He’ll be fine. He’s too good. We were saying the exact same thing about Wright last year,

(By the way, go check out Rollins’ numbers at the same age. Reyes is better.)

    • Nightlife says:

Yeah, even last season Reyes had that enormous slump in the second half but I think he still ended up with a slightly better OBP than Rollins (a thing Rollins has always been mediocre at).

    • altru426 says:

haha yes! i pointed that out a Phillies blog after the Santana trade and they were dogging on Reyes and pissed them off, they wanted hear none of it

    • Charlie says:

we were saying the same thing about jose reyes last season, too. he wasn’t fine.

i have to side with matt on this. i’m concerned, even though i know it’s early.

  3. nyjfanjmk says:

When Reyes gets on base it’s a completely different game.

    • shamsky says:

Problem is he strikes out and pops up a bit too often for a leadoff hitter. Jose wants his triples and homeruns which is fine, as long as he gets on base enough to justify the big swings.

      • Thing is, it seems that many of his triples are not big swings. They’re level swings that shoot the ball through the gaps. He hasn’t been swinging like that for months. He’s taking big cuts, and getting under the ball, hitting silly pop-ups around the field. I hope he pulls it back together.

Does anyone know why the WFAN on itunes doesn’t have the games on them?..everything else on it is live, even mets extra, but when its time for the games, it goes to reruns of mike and the mad dog..it sucks

    • jpnym15 says:

and does anyone know of a live stream of the game online, besides the MLB crappy service?..and something for freeee

  5. Mister Koo says:

Just looked and Carlos Gomez has stolen 5 already. Wow.

  6. matlack says:

The team does not want it. The Mets will continue to get squeezed by umps as EZ Willie continues to refuse to get excited about anything. Reyes still has the same bug up his ass from last year…whatever that was. Delgado should be batting second, as he now is the slap hitter Castillo used to be..

Church and Schneider are bright spots.and Santana are bright spots, on the other hand.

This team is uninspired…broken…what do you do to change that?

    • darkstar73 says:

did you miss Willie arguing and getting a call reversed (which never happens, other then HRs) the other day? and we’re broken? broken? really? you’re really going to make that statement after 5 games? broken? 5 games…

    • gameball says:

      Stop whining.

    • MetsLv31 says:

There are so many insane thoughts in this post I’m not sure I can even properly respond.

“Church and Schneider are bright spots.and Santana are bright spots, on the other hand.”
What does that incoherent sentence even mean? What other hand?

Just do everyone a favor and never post again. Thank you.

      • MetsLv31 says:

“Church and Schneider are bright spots.and Santana are bright spots, on the other hand.”

I suppose technically it is two sentences, since there is a random period in the middle of it…

        • keith hernandezs moustache says:

lets trade reyes for cash considerations and a player to be named and then we can trade santana back to the twins for gomez…whos with me?

  7. darkstar73 says:

i heard someone screaming on WFAN, i think it was yesterday, about how Reyes is “only hitting .238! .238! can you believe it, just .238!!!” I mean, sure, he’s hasn’t played up to his potential this past few games, but still, 2 more hits during that period and he’s hitting .333. If he goes 3-4 today, he’ll be hitting .320 for the season. It’s one thing to get on a player for just not playing well, not looking good out there, that’s fine, but its when people bring up useless stats like batting average after only 5 games in the season that makes you scratch your head and basically just say, this person knows absolutely nothing about baseball, i’m not going to listen to them. People can make their point about Reyes, but just don’t use batting average after 21 at bats.

    • Charlie says:

      well, here’s the thing:

reyes hit .248 over his last 359 ABs and had an OBP of .308 over his last 396 PAs.

that’s half of last year. and, thus far this year (spring/first week) he’s looked as clueless at bat as he did last year, so to say he is a concern is fair.

we all understand stats to the point that you can’t make any judgements after 24 PAs, but you can make judgements based on how someone looks at the plate and how it looks eerily similar to what he looked like last year, when he (frankly) stunk.

      • darkstar73 says:

thank you for making my point, over again, much appreciated.

        • Charlie says:

i didn’t make your point, sorry. if you want to wear your rose-colored glasses and listen to bobby mcferrin, so be it. but, the least you could do is have respect for the point i was trying to make.

    • Nightlife says:

      Whoa, some sanity!

I pretty much abstain from all sports radio these days. Especially WFAN when the Mets are losing. It has made my conscious much clearer and me much saner.

  8. wynton says:

I expect panic from the fans, but not from people who should know better.

The team has played just five games, and they faced two pretty good pitchers in Atlanta. Can we wait until May before turning all negative?

  9. MacD81 says:

Maybe this season will go in reverse. A crappy start and a very strong finish? I dunno. I feel it in my gut that Reyes is too good to stay down too long.

  10. haplo says:

Last year the kid stole too many bases and got tired; now he’s not stealing enough? He was batting, what, .298 heading into Sunday? He has a bad game and all of a sudden 2005 Reyes is back.

Reyes can’t win with anybody in the media or with Mets fans, and neither can the Mets.

    • Danny says:

I’m glad to hear more voices of reason regarding Reyes than I anticipated He’s so talented, he’s homegrown, he’s still so young, and some people are turning on him so quickly.

It sucks. If he gets booed today at introductions, I will be embarrassed. Not surprised, sadly.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i feel bad for him bc his 06 season was SOOOO good that it made alot of peoples expectations for him super human. he’ll come around. unfortunately jamie moyer is pitching today and if your an anxious hitter thats pressing in the box he may be the worst person to face since he has 3 pitches, slow, slower and slowest.

      • gameball says:

I’d be pretty surprised if Reyes was booed today. I would think it’ll take at least three bad home games for that.

I don’t remember all this talk about Wright last April. I guess because the Mets were winning early last year while he was slumping.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

oh there was plenty of talk last year saying how wright “lost it” and how he would never be good again and how the HR derby ruined his swing. and that we should trade him.

        • keith hernandezs moustache says:

i recall that as well and now the same is being said about reyes… i say we trade him now while hes hitting well and fielding well… im thinking straight up for keppinger? and then we can trade reyes straight up for gotay? thoughts?

      • keith hernandezs moustache says:

yeah i agree… id be embarassed to be called a met fan if that happens. heck even if they boo anyone on the team today for that matter… anyone know the date? no seriously my calendar is stuck on april 8th and i could have sworn its sept 8th?

  11. metsfansberealistic says:

why does he seem so glum all the time?

mentally he still seems to be where he was at the end of last year, and that’s a major worry

I still would have traded him straight up for Santana and kept the prospects

something is wrong with this guy

    • gameball says:

Sure. Than Santana could play short on days he doesn’t pitch.

    • LUNT101 says:

“I still would have traded him straight up for Santana and kept the prospects”

Let’s all take this time to thank god that you’re nowhere near being a baseball executive.

      • shamsky says:

I’m not saying I agree, but time will tell if Metsfansberealistic is right or wrong on that one, not you.

      • Charlie says:

we all shall see what happens with reyes, but you all have to agree, something seems off with the guy (at the plate).

    • zen says:

reyes is glum b/c he played his butt off for years slamming his body into the dirty for triples and stolen bases then went into a month-long slump and his “fans” abandoned him and booed him. they complained he was having too much fun.

  12. jimyager says:

Look, Reyes does look bad at the plate, he is not waiting for his pitch and he is swinging at stuff on the ground and throwing his ass to the side when he swings. He does look relaxed or confident at the plate. Something is wrong with him, I think he needs to have fun and play for fun, dance around and enjoy it. like he did on 2006. All the handshakes and high-fives is what made the team exciting and fun and it showed in the way they played.WE NEED HIM BACK!! He needs to get on base and scare the pitcher into throwing bad pitches and dance up and down the third base line and induce a balk, thats what he does best.

  13. wynton says:

If we’re going to go crazy about how Reyes looked bad for two games, then we should do the same about Wright, who could not buy a hit with runners on during that period.

  14. Aviv Geffen says:

are you for real? its only 5 games. Chill out!!!

  15. ScottN says:

Forget Reyes, to me our glaring weakness is Delgado. A singles hitter with no speed in the middle of the lineup scares me. No reason to panic about Jose, he’s got great talent and will put together at least a solid season. But I see absolutely nothing that makes me think Delgado isn’t just going to continue on his downward arc. We simply don’t have enough run production in that 5-7 area right now.

I like Delgado, but I think he’s going to be a tremendous weight on this team this year. Frankly I am more worried about the offense over the pitching for this year.
