postGame: Phillies 5 Mets 2
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 8, 2008 11:31 am

The Mets (2–4) lost to the Phillies (4–4) by the score of 5 to 2 in the final opening day at Shea Stadium this afternoon.

For a boxscore, check out the new-and-improved SNY.tv.

For a recap, read my live-blogging notes, here.

…by the way, as of now, there are 804 comments in this thread, which is unbelievable…i’ve never seen anything like that…i don’t know if i am impressed, or scared for Willie Randolph

…wowgood lord, man

4:21 pm

Jimmy Rollins is out with a sprained ankle.

4:17 pm

Carlos Beltran hit a one-out double, following by a pinch-hit walk from Brady Clarkbut, Ryan Church grounded out weakly to second base, against a lefty

Mets 2
Phillies 5
end of eighth

4:15 pm

…in the middle of the inning, Keith Hernandez let out a nice, loud yawn, which i think says it all

4:06 pm

Jimmy Rollins has been taken out of the game in favor of Eric Bruntlett, so i can only assume that something is up with rollins, who jogged home slowly in the previous inning

…forgive me if i’m not crying

4:03 pm

well, hat’s off to Shea Stadium, which just finished playing Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up, which finished first place in the team’s eighth0–inning sing-a-long content, due to heavy lobbying from Fark.com and Digg.com…this will not end up being the new song, though…for more, click here

4:00 pm

…i hate to say it, but this feels EXACTLY like a game from last September…in every way, shape and form…

…thankfully, it’s only April…

Mets 2
Phillies 5
middle of eighth

3:56 pm

Carlos Muniz is warming up in the bullpen.

Pedro Feliciano is still no place to be found…

…i can only assume there is something wrong with feliciano, who has not pitched since April 2…

…meanwhile, Chase Utley ripped a double on a meatball from Aaron Heilman, over the head of Ryan Church, to drive in Jimmy Rollins to put the Phillies up by three

3:50 pm

…in a one-run game, Aaron Heilman walks the eighth hitter to lead off the inning…unreal…So Taguchi advanced him to second…Jimmy Rollins then ripped a ground ball under the glove of Carlos Delgado to drive in the run…

delgado never had a chance, though not many first baseman would have…it was scorched…

…in the following at-bat, Brian Schneider allowed another pass ball, his second of the day – both of which he should have caught…sloppy play, letting yet another run to be in scoring position…

…this, as much as any thing, including any such managerial decision, is what loses games…mistakes…ugh…

3:44 pm

Damion Easley popped out to the warning track in right to end the inning…i thought it was gone…damn

Mets 2
Phillies 3
end of seventh

3:41 pm

well, shows what i know…endy swings, hits a ball directly at Jimmy Rollins, who cleared the bases with a double play

Jose Reyes then ripped a single up the middle…i bet they throw over to first at least seven times during Damion Easley’s at bat

3:40 pm

…for what it’s worth, i would not bunt Endy Chavez in this situation, with the tying run on first, no outs and a thin bench

3:33 pm

Jorge Sosa is in for Scott Schoeneweis to face Pat Burrell, while Endy Chavez is in for Angel Pagan

sosa got burrell to pop up, deep to left, but Jayson Werth hit a ball the other way, through the infield, with two strikes, to put the Phillies ahead…

…i hate that this is feeling like a game from last year, with all the usual suspects at play…

Mets 2
Phillies 3
middle of seventh

3:27 pm

Ryan Howard hit a potential double-play ball, as was scripted, nice job Scott Schoeneweis, but Carlos Delgado made a poor throw in to the back of Chase Utley, who stood tall for as long as he could while sliding in to second…the ball bounced off utley’s back, rolled in to the outfield, two runs scored and the game is tied

Jose Reyes is a bit at fault, as well, since he set up for the catch right in line with utley

…naturally, schoeneweis was booed while walking from the field…the thing is, while he allowed the two guys to get on, he did what he had to do by getting the ground ball…if any one should be booed, assuming you have to boo, you should boo delgado, not the pitcher

3:22 pm

Scott Schoeneweis let up a hit, then hit Chase Utley, who has been hit three times today, which is understable since his totally crowds the plate

…ground ball, scott…ground…ball…do it…come on

3:18 pm

yes, i’m concerned that Scott Schoenweiss is pitching this entire inning, including to righties…and, of course, he’s struggling, while Jorge Sosa warms up…ugh

…when do we issue missing person’s report for Pedro Feliciano

yes, i’m concerned that Scott Schoeneweis is pitching this entire inning, including to righties…and, of course, he’s struggling, while Jorge Sosa warms up…ugh

…when do we issue missing person’s report for Pedro Feliciano?…

3:10 pm

Joe Smith warmed up on the mound. However, the Phillies pinch hit for Jaime Moyer, and so the Mets pulled Smith for Scott Schoeneweis, before Smith could even throw a pitch.

3:07 pm

the Phillies played the shift on Ryan Church, who hit a grounder to short, which was fielded by the third baseman for an out…

Mets 2
Phillies 0
end of sixth

3:00 pm

Joe Smith entered in place of Perez, with the tying runs at the plate, to face the right-handed Pedro Feliz, and he walked Feliz.

However, he got Carlos Ruiz to ground out to end the inning.

…smith never hit schneider’s target the entire time, and threw an absolute spinning meatball to ruiz which he thankfully took for a strike…close call

Mets 2
Phillies 0
middle of sixth

2:57 pm

…Shea Stadium is using the organ, which played a bit of Crazy Train by Ozzy Obsourne…

…i love when rock and pop songs are covered on organ…

…i prefer silence, or organ..that’s it

2:55 pm

Oliver Perez looked great, getting the first two batters…then, in natural perez fashion, the wheels started to come off and came off quick…he had Pat Burrel down in the count, lost him, walked him, he then balked, walked another batter along with a pass ball to give first and third…and that was all, which i agree with…i love oliver, but when he goes off the tracks, he’s not coming back…

…as such, Joe Smith is in the game…

2:43 pm

David Wright hit two balls really, really hard against Jamie Moyer earlier in the game, but both were tracked down by Shane Victorinoso, in the fifth, he ripped a ball in to the right-field corner as far from shane as possible for his first hit of the day…unfortunately, the same can not be said for Carlos Beltran, who had a potential RBI double run down by, you guessed it, victorino, to end the inning…

Mets 2
Phillies 0
end of fifth

2:34 pm

…with one out and a runner on first, Oliver Perez walked the pitcher, who had been trying to bunt the runner over, bringing Jimmy Rollins to the plate who started with a 2–0 count, at which point Brian Schneider wisely walked out to the mound…

…he got it together, though, getting rollins on a fielder’s choice and Shane Victorino to pop out…

…nice…NICE rebound, ollie…and nice work, schneider as well…

Mets 2
Phillies 0
middle of fifth

2:31 pm

Luis Castillo has left the game with right knee soreness.

…how exactly does that differ from every other day of the week…

He came up a bit lame while running down a pop up in foul territory in the previous inning.

2:25 pm

Luis Castillo has been replaced by Damion Easley.

let the Ruben Gotay comments begin

2:23 pm

…bases loaded, Ryan Church up against a lefty, one out, and he hit a weak grounder to second, but it scored a run…good enough…unfortunately, they then walked Brian Schneider to bring up Oliver Perez with two outs, who first tried to bunt, while dropping his bat on home plate, and then eventually struck out…

Carlos Delgado hit a one-handed single to the opposite field…and it’s about time…go with it, losgo with it

…by the way, Angel Pagan uses the theme to Indiana Jones as his entrance music, which is music to my ears…Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie of all time…

…pagan legged out a ground ball deep in the hole at second, helped out by a double-clutch from Chase Utley

Mets 2
Phillies 0
end of fourth

2:13 pm

…in case you’re wondering, ‘Everybody clap your hands’ is back…

2:12 pm

…by the way, according to few a e-mails, MLB GameCast has referred to all of Jaime Moyer’s pitches, be it a fastball or not, as breaking ball…hilarious…

2:10 pm

Shave Victorino and Jayson Werth just knocked in to one another chasing down a fly ball hit in to the left-center gap.

…both players appear fine, and play has resumed with both still at their respective positions…

…it’s a funny replay, i’m sorry to say, because werth essentially tackles him…they run in to one another, werth wraps his arms around him and brings him down the ground as though he was trying to force a fumble…weird

2:02 pm

…again, Oliver Perez hit Chase Utley with a inside fastball…well, they say it hit him…if it did, it hit a loose thread on his jersey…nevertheless, record it as a second hit-by-pitch…i dig the game plan, which is clearly to pound him in

otherwise, opie is in command

Mets 1

1:50 pm

a nice 1–2–3 inning for Oliver Perez, who fell behind 3–0 to Jimmy Rollins, shook his head looking a bit dejected, but then got a strike and induced a ground ball out

Mets 1
Phillies 0
middle of third

1:45 pm

Carlos Delgado crushed a home run to left field off a 78–mph fastball*, which was received by a curtain call

Mets 1
Phillies 0
end of second

1:37 pm

…heads up play by Carlos Delgado, who scooped up a one-hopper, then tagged first base and then tagged the runner leading off, confused on whether he should run to second, for the unassisted double play…

Oliver Perez is in his groove…a nice little rhythm…

Mets 0
Phillies 0
middle of second

1:32 pm

here’s a thought, like they did in 2006, when wearing the 1986 uniforms, the Mets should wear a modern version of each style at some point this season, to honor each era

1:30 pm

i know Jaime Moyer is a decent pitcher, and i certainly respect his track record, but he is the furthest-looking thing i have ever seen to a professional athlete…he looks like he is in pain…

…of course, he allowed a walk to Luis Castillo, but that’s it…

David Wright hit a bomb to center, which clearly got knocked down by the wind, and was run down by Shave Victorino, putting to rest that this will become a hitter’s park this season

…*like SNY.tv’s Ted Berg just said to me, should moyer’s fastball really be called a fastball if it’s only 76 mph…

Mets 0
Phillies 0
end of first

1:22 pm

Oliver Perez looked a little pumped up, over-throwing a bit…

…on the plus side, thanks to Brian Schneider, he threw inside a lot…so much so, he hit Chase Utley with a slider…but, thankfully, got Ryan Howard to pop out, and Pat Burrell to strike out looking with a outside slider to strand two runners…

…interestingly, Ron Darling mentioned that the winds are swirling around the stadium more than he ever remembers, which is probably a result of Citi Field creating a wind tunnel

Mets 0
Phillies 0
middle of first

1:00 pm

Michael Almanti is singing the National Anthem.

this guy should put Official National Anthem Singer on his business card…i feel like it is all he does…every time i turn around, either he’s signing or Ronan Tynan is singing…

…i am actually convinced that tynan sleeps on a cot in Yankee Stadium, and is only allowed up for sunlight when they need him

12:55 pm

for what it’s worth, Willie Randolph got a strong ovation from the crowd, mixed with a few booshowever, Howard Johnson got the biggest cheer of any coach

Howie Rose said, “Welcome to New York, No. 57 Johan Santana,” which was followed by a long and loud cheer.

by the way, Scott Schoenweiss got booed…unreal

Naturally, David Wright got the biggest cheer of any positional player in the starting lineup.

12:50 pm

they are playing the theme to Superman while introducing the 2008 new York Mets…

12:46 pm

Howie Rose: No. 11, Jimmy Rollins.

Shea Stadium: BOOOOOOOOOOOO.

…i love itof the starting lineup, rollins clearly got the biggest boos, though Pat Burrell came fairly close

12:35 pm

The entire Shea family has taken the field, as a tribute to William A. Shea plays on the Diamondvision.

there appears to be only a few thousand fans in the stands

12:17 pm

According to Strawberry, his greatest moment at Shea Stadium was when his team won the NL East in 1986.

12:10 pm

Darryl Strawberry is in the house…he will occasionally work with SNY this season as a Mets analyst, which i am very happy about…he’ll be an on-air guest in a few minutes…

12:07 pm

Mets 3B David Wright, when asked by SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, about what he thinks of when he thinks of Opening Day:

“The fans, first and foremost. I mean, they come out in full force. 55,000 crazy, screaming New Yorkers.”

Wright, on whether he’ll miss Shea Stadium:

“I have a lot of memories on the field, probably even more in the clubhouse with the guys…But, I think, it makes the transition a little easier when you look nextdoor and you see what’s going up. But, I will be sad, there’s a lot of history in this park and a lot of memories for me personally.”

11:55 am

…i miss skipping school to watch Opening Day

11:50 am

…i’m impressed…the pockets of fans who are actually inside the stadium do not seem all that hostile towards Jimmy Rollins, who is on the field taking batting practice…some how, i doubt the same will happen when he steps to the plate to lead off the game…

…i hope he has ear plugs…

11:35 am

…the stadium is rocking with sporadic Lets Go Mets chants…

11:27 am

…in typical Shea fashion, i’m hearing that is is a nightmare driving in and finding parking…what a shock…had i been driving in from Connecticut, i bet i would still be on the bridge, getting ready to do a tour of Corona Park, before settling on a spot in the Tennis Center…oh well…by the way, it appears The Hill is no longer available, and, as reported in the off-season, the old Subway Station and Stairwell is no place to be found…it has been wiped from the earth…what a crime

Man, how did I forget this was an afternoon game?

Goodbye work productivity for the day.

      Let’s Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. jeff5361 says:

That is where I always parked, on the other side of corona parked and walked it. It was usually frr but I bet today there are charging

  3. swirlywand says:

no seriously, I’m in tears…I so wish I were there! LET’S GO METS!!!!

  4. zen says:

Who would drive there with the new stadium up?

  5. murdertron3000 says:

What’s the deal with the subway now, with the station and the stairwell gone?

    • tfc3rid says:

They built a new stairway out of the station… They whoe area there has been modified because of the rotunda and Citi Field Fan Walk area for next season.

  6. CharlieH says:

    How are the tailgates, Matthew?

  7. VCarver says:

I’m getting weepy thinking about the last opening day there. No more subway station with the stairs either! It’s so sad.

I hope they memorialize Shea and Bill Shea at the new Citifield. With something permanent. It will be a shame if they don’t.

    • DjDeF says:

William Shea will forever be a part of the retired numbers with the ceremony today. The numbers and the Symbol or whatever it is for Shea will be moved to Citi.

      • DjDeF says:

Also I believe they are leaving Home Plate from Shea where it is and will build something around it so people can still go there which is kinda cool.

    • 7-train says:

I’m sure the subway will still have stairs, bro. And smell like hot piss like all the other subway stations in the city.

Next year we’ll have a nice new stadium and build a whole bunch of new fond memories about our beautiful park where you don’t get vertigo walking down 5 miles of steeper than they should be ramps.

  8. metfan630 says:

LETS GO METS! LETS GO METS!!

(damn work for having meetings all afternoon)

  9. tfc3rid says:

So sad I can’t get WFAN on the clockradio in my office,…

    • DjDeF says:

14.95 for the season on MLB.com for the game on the radio

      • tfc3rid says:

I have it but can’t use it at work. See my note below… Office IT told me to stop streaing because it was loadin their servers… Then sent out a nastygram to everyone that streaming is prohibited…

  10. Montana Mets Fan says:

Thank God for internet radio. I still can’t believe that ESPN is not broadcasting this.

    • tfc3rid says:

Got in trouble with my office IT department when I listened to MLB Gameday Audio last Monday…

No more Gamecast even for me…

      • DjDeF says:

        thats BS.

        • tfc3rid says:

          You’re telling me…

        • toomanyuniforms says:

We don’t even have the option of ANY streaming broadcast of anything. I’m going to be watching the little red and green dots on “Gameday.”

      • Montana Mets Fan says:

That’s rough! I really do feel sorry for you. Some people just don’t understand!

      • PaulInNC says:

Just do like I do… leave the internet alone (scores) and just DVR the game and watch it at home. I know this can be tough for us diehards, but I’ve found that its an effective means to avoid getting blackballed by your IT department (which I am actually a part of in my company :))

  11. jimyager says:

people that DONT live in the metro area have to drive, like me from Vermont. I also think that Wilie is not right for this team. He didnt get it done in 06 and failed in 07 and so far in 08 the teams has NOT proven anything at all. Willie neds to light a fire under these guys and get them going. He should shake tings up and move things around, do whatever it takes. If they dont do it this season I think he’s done and Im not confident that the games 7 loss in 06 and 07 collapse has not gotten into the teams brains.

    • tfc3rid says:

If this team is truggling by Memorial Day he might be gone…

    • gipper913 says:

      Jimyager,

Then, why not drive to an LIRR or subway station and take the train into Shea?

    • ksuth says:

i mean we are a whole 5 games into the season, we better change and shake things up now….hmm…..I’VE GOT IT!!!!

Johan gets moved to the Pen. Wagner gets released. Move Delgado to the old folks home, and have Nelson Figueroa be our ACE. That’ll teach Johan to lose a game! Oh, and Castillo should be benched for Easley.

Seriously, we’re 5 games into the season. CHILL OUT!

  12. DerangedHermit says:

    Daaaaaaaaaaarryl. Daaaaaaaaarryl.

  13. DaveyS says:

Are there blackouts with mlb radio?

  14. backinbusiness says:

Just one big, childish, BOO to those of us stuck at work in PHILLY suffering the mlb.tv blackout. Yuck.

    Let’s Go Mets!

    • Jersey Shore Mets says:

I feel you man. I tried connecting through a remote proxy server but my work computer wont allow it. Since it’s impossible to avoid the score, making DVRing impossible, I guess its time for MLB Radio and a pair of headphones.

      • backinbusiness says:

I’ve got WFAN via mlb.radio coming out of my speakers. Coworkers be damned.

  15. ksuth says:

    …12:37…

charlie manuel just piced his nose.

  16. gipper913 says:

Would it kill MLB.tv or Extra Innings to show the pregame festivities??????????!!!!

  17. gipper913 says:

  18. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i miss those days too matt. i remember one year my friends skipped school when we were in HS to go to the game and somehow a pic of them ended up in the newspaper (i think newsday). a teacher cut it out and had it on the blackboard the next day. it was hilarious.

  19. Mookie 1986 says:

    I love it!

they’re booing trainers and equipment managers. Gotta love New Yorkers!

  20. Mookie 1986 says:

Well, they did boo some of our boys, which on the final Opening Day at Shea, is silly.

Heilman got some, and Show… well he got hammered. But you pay, so you have the right to boo whom ever you want.

  21. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

the superman theme song and the mets, jerry seinfelds head must have exploded.

  22. MudvilleNine says:

I love it. Shoe follows Santana’s loud cheers, with loud boos. He just points to the crowd, turns to Johan, and pretty much tells him I told you so. LOL

    • keith hernandezs moustache says:

id generally agree with you but i think the fact that can and prob will go home tonight and bathe in 100 dollar bills will ease is his pain

  23. I recently moved to Philly , but I just got the MLB direct package….Matt thanks 4 keepin me posted on all the goings on b4 the game..I love this site…LETS GO METS!!

  24. viktor06 says:

Seriously…they shouldn’t boo home players on opening day…tomorrow or after he blows it, but not now

  25. likeitoughttabe29 says:

There is nothing better than a ride on the 7 Train when the mets are playing a big game. People are packed in usually chanting lets go mets. they might as well just make it a METS FAN ONLY train because anyone on it for another reason just gets annoyed and usually loses hearing.

  26. markcore says:

It is hilarious to hear the crowd boo’ing the Phillies TRAINING STAFF! .. that’s just funy

  27. QnsNative718 says:

Gotta love it! BTW who’s doing the play by play here? Poor schmucks like me are in prison aka work…

  30. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

please OP just dont groove a fastball first pitch rollins is definitely going to look to start off this game with a bang and quiet the crowd.

  31. ill says:

whats the O/U on how many BBs Perez issues today?

I am setting it at 5.

  32. backinbusiness says:

Just FYI. I just checked CBS sportsline play-by-play and it is a good 30 seconds ahead of the mlb.radio broadcast. so just be mindful of this when posting any immediate “WOO!” or “GRR!”

  33. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

mlb gamecast is showing OPs fastball at 86-88. is this accurate?

    • raylyman78 says:

I swear when they announced the Phillies bullpen coach, he was making a choke gesture. Did anyone else see this?

      • keith hernandezs moustache says:

no but i can only assume if he did it then he was indicating to the fans that hes into sadomasochism and is wondering if anyone else in the stands is too?

      • metchamp78 says:

I saw him. He was caressing his neck so fans by the left field line could see.

    • metsmobile says:

its saying 87-89 on the SNY gun

take that for what its worth though

    • thenextgreat1 says:

sny just showed OP at 87

  34. gomets6091 says:

is it weird that Im WAY more afraid of Pat Burrell than Ryan “MVP” Howard?

  35. wolverine193 says:

Great start. Way to set the tone. LET’S GO METS!

Very nice Ollie. A couple of great pitch calls by Schnieder there too.

With Pelfrey pitching tomorrow it would really be nice to take this one

  39. QnsNative718 says:

Hey hey what is this??? a little play by play would be nice!!!

  40. ill says:

Perez getting hit early. Second time through the line up is gonna be rough.

  41. Nightlife says:

Man, why does the quality of the MLB.tv feeds vary so much on different broadcasts. Examples, every Braves game I have seen and a lot of the West coast games all come in widescreen on 1.2m feed and look fantastic for live streaming video, but every other teams games I see looks no better than the 800k feed (less clarity in the picture, no widescreen).

  42. Mayor Bloomberg looked like he borrowed that orange sweater from Mr. Rogers.

  43. ravi3 says:

Werth leads off with a single thru the right side of the infield

Feliz hits a curveball right to Delgado, playing on the line, who tags the bag and then Werth – 2 outs

Ruiz flies out to center – 3 outs

  44. ravi3 says:

Delgado leads off with a HR to right!

  45. appleinahat says:

    great idea about the uniforms

    • QnsNative718 says:

      What about the uniforms?

    • DjDeF says:

Agreed about wearing all the uniforms in Mets history over the course of the season.
It would definitely be cool and would give the Mets some merchandise to sell

  46. zen says:

i guess delgado didn’t play with his kid this year

  47. huge_mets_fan11 says:

    Del-got it!

  48. nevets72 says:

    CDOG! goes yard!

  49. ravi3 says:

Delgado leads off the 2nd with a solo shot to RF, off the bottom of the scoreboard. Mets 1 – Phils 0

Pagan hits a liner to center, caught by Victorino….both his and David’s drives seemed to carry a bit. 1 out

Church gets on after getting hit

Schneider grounds into a 4-4-3 DP

  50. QnsNative718 says:

Thats great, but please no CDOG…

  51. Joe Bacci says:

    Delgado is raking!

  52. nyjfanjmk says:

Delgado CRUSHED that, way to put any boos to rest for today at least.

  53. ScottN says:

Good sign for Delgado against a lefty, but his issue is with pitchers that can beat him with a fastball. 80mph fastballs is just the recipe for what ails him. Maybe it gets him on a roll, though.

    • QnsNative718 says:

Good point, but nontheless this is def. a confidence booster..

    • zen says:

he hit both smoltz and hudson in atl

      • ScottN says:

        Not with power.

        • zen says:

fair enough, but it’s a few games in. i’m fine with him becoming a doubles hitter if it means he makes more contact and drives in runs

        • gomets6091 says:

agreed. I’d take a .300 season with 20 homers if he also hits 35-40 doubles.

        • ScottN says:

My problem is with your 35-40 doubles. Again, that means he’s hitting the ball hard into gaps. I’m afraid he doesn’t have the batspeed anymore to do that. I don’t think we can affort Shawn Green-style production out of a key power spot.

  54. ravi3 says:

Moyer hits it right back to Perez, who does a nice job fielding the ball and getting it to 1st – 1 out

Opie goes 3-0 to Rollins, before Jimmy grounds out to Wright

Victorino jumps at the first pitch, and flies out to right.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

      Thanks ravi3.

I’m stuck at work today and cannot use MLB Extra Innings (my most favored treasure) . Your play by play is helping the day go by!

      LET’s GO METS.

      • ravi3 says:

yea i scheduled today as a day off once the schedule became official…was trying to get tix up to last night (unfortunately, I wasn’t paying $390 for tix, even though they were field level behind the plate)

  55. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

I’m waiting for a witty Saltzy (sp?) comment…

  56. keith hernandezs moustache says:

so much for my prediction of moyer pitching a perfect game and hitting a homerun… a la “the scout”

  57. ravi3 says:

Perez leads off with a grounder to 2nd base – 1 out

Reyes grounds out to third…he showed bunt a few times in the AB, and if he can be good at it, it will be a great weapon for him – 2 out

Castillo grounds to Howard – 3 out

  58. ill says:

    nice play by Howard.

  59. Its pretty frustrating watching Moyer pitch. It looks like i could hit this guy and its fascinating watching him get Major League hitters out. How does he do it? The guys in my wiffleball league throw harder

  60. CornellMetsFan says:

    lets get off delgados back

  61. therealsince86 says:

Reyes and Castillo have to start hitting sometime, right? Can they at least find a way to get on base some how? Poor David Wright.

  62. ill says:

Utley has been hit twice in this game. I call shenanigans!

  63. metties1 says:

watching MLB Gamecast on the computer. You gotta love from Moyer:

    79mph Changeup
    79mph Fastball

  64. therealsince86 says:

Hey Ill, think that Howard will lead your team in SO including the pitchers?

    • ill says:

he might, I really wish he would learn to bring them down. Is he leading MLB with K’s so far?

I can almost be positive he won’t get another MVP.

  65. gomets6091 says:

by the way: Ryan Howard, most overrated player in baseball? 11 Ks in 25 ABs. He could challenge Nolan Ryan’s 383 K’s in a year record!

    • zen says:

you’re wrong, the guys a big time player but he DOES
      K way too much!

    • rogasm says:

Either way, that’s the pride of Lafayette High School!

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

overrated may be a stretch. the guy can hit it out of yosemite but i am curious to see what he’d be like playing at a place like petco park or even shea stadium.

        • keith hernandezs moustache says:

        • ill says:

look at his splits from the last 3 yrs.
          64 HRs away from CBP
          63 HRs @ CBP

The stadium doesn’t matter, the ball still goes.

        • rogasm says:

I would rather him than Delgado…

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

thats such a stupid statement, there are hitters parks outside of CBP, his road stats mean nothing unless you break it down by stadium. i dont have the time to do that but if you told me his HR/AB ratio is similar at petco, and shea, and rfk to everything else then ill believe hed be the same player.

        • zen says:

stupid is speaking before checking the facts. his hr per ab is higher at shea and petco than cbp

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

no stupid is not being able to read. my first statement said he wasnt overrated and that i was curious how his stats would look if he didnt play 81 games in philly, i never made any kind of declaration that hed be worse out of philly just stated i was CURIOUS do you know what that word means. my second statement simply said that you cant just go by home and road you would have to break them all down due to the increasing amount of hitters parks popping up all over baseball. oh and actually the accurate way to determine this would be to take his hr/ab at a particular stadium vs total, not vs just his home park.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

again i dont have time to do this and maybe he comes out smelling like roses after the analysis i never said he wouldn just wondered what the exact numbers were. and for the record the “stupid comment” reference was to ill not to you zen, but you proved to be the bigger dbag of the two, so go f*** youself.

        • zen says:

those are your requirements. you don’t make the rules. i disagree with your point.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

“im curious to know” is not a point. I didnt try to make a point i asked a question, a question that you, the all knowing zen, think you have the answer to BUT DONT. and when i simply make it clear that I understand how to truely use stats to analyze something (just dont have the time to do it) you say you dont agree and i dont make the rules, so who does? you?.

        • zen says:

          g-d?

  66. ravi3 says:

Utley gets hit again to lead off the inning…Both of the HBP’s were kinda flukey…Chase wears the baggy jersey, and both pitches barely grazed the fabric.

Gary reminiscing about the days when a game cost a $1.30….meanwhile the only tickets I could find for todays game were about $400….inflation is a B.

Howard strikes out swinging on a nasty slider low and away – 1 out

Burell flies out to RF – 2 out

Werth grounds to short, Reyes gets the out at 2nd – 3 out

  67. ravi3 says:

Looking at the lineups going into the game, Reyes and Castillo are the only guys batting below .315 … they’ve gotta start sometime, right?

  68. likeitoughttabe29 says:

Ok, does anyone else have a problem with the new FAN guy? (his name is slipping my mind right now)

Hes good and has a good voice, but i feel he says things like he is trying to introduce the team to us, or like it was a national broadcast and hes trying to familiarize the team to the audience.”

he says things like ” David Wright at the plate, who just may be the central point of this met offense” ill come up with more examples but he just seems to not fit in.

  69. skyking26 says:

Phillies broadcast just beating the piss outta the Mets,
“nothing was sweeter then the Mets collapse”
“Reyes rubs teammates the wrong way when things not

  73. therealsince86 says:

    Delgado, He’s done.

    • keith hernandezs moustache says:

i agree… maybe its not too late to trade the rest of our prospects for a backup for him

  80. nevets72 says:

Can someone describe Pagan’s infield single?

  81. NYCESQ says:

  82. skyking26 says:

    weak AB by Church!

  83. CornellMetsFan says:

    ill take the run

  84. ravi3 says:

Wright leads off the inning with fly to deep right center, caught by Victorino, who collides pretty hard with Werth, but keeps the ball. – 1 out

Gary reminding the Beltran haters that Carlos came back 6 days after colliding with Cameron, with broken bones in his face…

    Beltran draws a walk – 1 out

Gov. Patterson meanwhile is displaying his impressive Mets knowledge to Kevin Burkhardt, includin quoting the Murph…”We’ve got a real Pier 6 brawl here”

Delgado continues to go the otherway, shooting a single over thru the left side of the infield…Beltran to 2nd – 1 out

Pagan shoots a ball to Utley, who fields it by the outfield grass…Utley stumbles fielding the ball, and Pagan just barely beats it out to load the bases….Beltran to 3rd, Delgado to 2nd – 1 out

Big test for Church vs. the lefty Moyer…mixed results, as Church hits a slow roller to Utley, but drives in the run. Pagan to 2nd, Delgado to 3rd – 2 outs. Mets 2 – Phils 0

    • ravi3 says:

walk to Schneider to load the bases. Delgado on 3rd, Pagan on 2nd, Schneider on 1st, with Perez coming up – 2 outs

  85. gomets6091 says:

  89. ravi3 says:

With 2 outs and the bases juiced Perez strikes out swinging on the pitch in the dirt

  90. metties1 says:

That’s about as weak as being stuck in the office on Opening Day!

  91. QnsNative718 says:

    eh its a pitcher.. whatyagonnado..

  92. nevets72 says:

Frustrating to get only one run with bases juiced and one out, but the line-up did turn-over again.

It is time for Reyes-Castillo to light a fire!

  93. ravi3 says:

Easley in for Castillo…..No word on whats wrong.

  94. metsfansince1992 says:

Even though I hate the results, I still love the fact that the pitcher has to hit for himself.

  95. skyking26 says:

Here we go! Castillo out ALREADY! But no I was wrong for hammering Don Omar all winter. Boy, that Wilpon $ must

  105. metsfansince1992 says:

Did Schneider paid a vist to Perez? From Gameday he seems to have lost his groove.

  106. backinbusiness says:

“Right knee soreness” per Howie Rose. Wonderful.

  107. Hellbelly says:

I’ve been watching Mets game on MLB extra innings up here in Boston, but was keeping eye on Red Sox opening game ceremony.

Guess who threw out first pitch?

    Billy Buckner!

To be honest it was actually very moving…..serious long, loud ovation…..Buckner walking in from center-field wiping away tears.

  108. ravi3 says:

Feliz grounds to Reyes, who nearly booted it, makes a high throw to Delgado, who is barely able to stay on the bag – 1 out

Ruiz grounds a single thru the right side – 1 out. Ruiz on 1st

Ugh…Moyer tried to bunt over Ruiz, but instead Ollie walks him – 1 out. Ruiz to 2nd.

Rollins grounds to Wright, but beats out the DP – 2 out. Ruiz to 3rd.

**Castillo out of the game with “right knee soreness”

Victorino flies out to Reyes on the outfield grass – 3 out

  109. jcervone7 says:

I don’t know what Schneider said to Perez, but well done.

  110. therealsince86 says:

    Perez for Cy Young???

  111. nyjfanjmk says:

That was huge getting out of that inning

  112. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Lol Tom McCarthy: Lets see if the Phils can make Perez pay for walking Moyer. If your the Phils you have to make him pay.

I know he is announcing on a Phils netowrk but it is weird to hear him say that.

  113. CornellMetsFan says:

easley is a servicable 2nd basemen, but i wish we still had gotay

  114. vitto79 says:

Oh for crying out loud……Castillo is going to do this all year long………and yea Gotay is gone so their is Easley and then what………….Jose Freaking Valentin looks good right now even

I think Easley is a real good player and better than Gotay overall but still it would be nice to have that option

I still think Pagan is worth keeping over Gotay when it comes down to it……..and that was the choice when Alou returns in a few

  115. shamsky says:

    Three runs + this inning!

  116. keith hernandezs moustache says:

i am predicting a david wright homerun his next at bat

  117. cbusmetsfan says:

Here’s one for you…What’s the difference between Luis Castillo and Anderson Hernandez? Give Up?

    4 years and $ 22 million (I’ll assume Anderson makes 500K a year)

Seriously, what does Castillo do that Hernandez doesn’t? Stay healthy. Aside from that, he’s a slap hitting 2nd baseman. AHern is probably faster and fields better too. What a stupid signing by Omar.

    • therealsince86 says:

      Hit .300 with a .350 OBP?

      • Bobby Bones in SC says:

Agreed. Hernandez may get a chance again this year though. I sure hope he can bat .300!

      • cbusmetsfan says:

Castillo is also 33 and has chronic knee problems. He’ll be 37 and probably have 2 new knees at the end of this contract. If Omar signs him for 2 years, that’s fine. But 4? Is there no 2b depth in the farm system that he needs to sign Castillo for 4 years?

        • zen says:

how will the mets ever survive with castillo making $5.5m for the last two years of that deal? it’s pennies for them…4% of the payroll

        • therealsince86 says:

You do know we are the Mets right? If he sucks after 2 years then he can be a bench player or we can eat cash and trade him. So what? He was the best option and Omar made sure we could get him. That’s what a large market team can do. Do you remember what we paid for Jose Valentin?

    • skyking26 says:

Thats not what most of you said during the winter.

    • reyesnwright says:

Castillo is a career .294 hitter with a .368 OBP and Hernanez is a career .138 hitter with a .157 OBP?
      Do I win?

      • therealsince86 says:

Nope, I buzzed in first. :)

      • cbusmetsfan says:

That’s the past…we’re playing in the present here where is appears Castillo is no better than a slap hitter. I’d be happy if he prooves otherwise but this is not 2000, 2001, 2002, or 2003 all over again.

        • therealsince86 says:

So all of a sudden a 32 year old guy is done and will not hit his career average?

        • reyesnwright says:

          I’ll take his .301 average and .362 OBP from 2007 in a second. Oh, and he’s 32, not 33.

        • skyking26 says:

because his kneesare 52 and his hip 72.

        • therealsince86 says:

Yet he does not seem to miss many games, I guess he is tough too.
Again he will be fine for a least 2 years and then we can see where we are.

  118. QnsNative718 says:

Um are people intentionally leaving out Marlon Anderson here?

  119. ravi3 says:

Reyes lines out to Howard – 1 out

Easley grounds out to Utley in his first AB – 2 out

Wright lines a double to LF – 2 out

Beltran hits the ball to center…Victorino hustles and makes a nice running grab – 3 out

  120. wolverine193 says:

Can somebody please remind Shane Victorino that he sucks

  121. QnsNative718 says:

    I’ll do it…

  122. gem779 says:

lol, all this castillo hate. Just wait till he starts hitting and this should all die down. Reyes and Castillo are as good a 1-2 as there is. It is…………………….April

  123. wolverine193 says:

Once again Omar, you are a genius for getting rid of Gotay. Who would’ve thought that Castillo’s knees might start bothering him?

  124. shamsky says:

Remember one thing about Castillo, he’s buddies with Santana. Don’t think for one minute that Johan didn’t ask Omar what’s up with his good buddy from the Twins. I would bet that Omar got his arm twisted big time on Castillo’s contract.

    • skyking26 says:

      YEAH! O.K..

    • Jayperez says:

I hope not. But i do think its cause of the lack of depth we have at that position. We either have one or the other at 2b. Anderson got the defense and Gotay had the offense. Castillo i guess was a happy medium and thats why he signed him. The 4 years i think was the part he messed up with. But then again i dont think there is anyone in the farm thats coming up and can knock off castillo from his job.

  125. zen says:

mets should have locked up ollie to a deal before the season: $$$$

    • wolverine193 says:

Boras would never let that happen

    • Jayperez says:

I hope they do. I would hate to see this guy go to FA and we have to compete against just about everybody to keep him. But remember we are dealing with boras sooo who knows with him

    • skyking26 says:

was never gonna happen , not with his agent.
Plus really you couldnt ’cause we dont know if what he did last yr is what he is.

    • keith hernandezs moustache says:

they should have locked me up before the season too…now theyve done it and im going to sign with the phillies and show off my nasty 2 seam changeup… just wait

    • cruzer125 says:

actually with it being a contract year for ollie, we may get the best out of him this year…it always seems that some guys start to decline as soon as they get the big bucks..look at kevin brown and barry zito

      • skyking26 says:

should. players always seem to get healthy/focused
in the walk year but THIS GUY hasn’t proven enough
        to warrant 6/7 yrs-90/100MIl

  126. skyking26 says:

Phils prob w/losing Rowland is that Victorinos gonna have
to make tose catches all yr b/t burrell and jenkins/werth.

  127. wolverine193 says:

If Castillo is out an extended period of time I’d like to try Church in that two spot

  128. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Anyone know what Ollie’s pitch count is?

I can’t watch the game from work and you guys are my life line.

  129. zen says:

nice to see reyes coming in to focus ollie!

  130. twassel says:

    92 and counting

  131. skyking26 says:

This is a knock-off version of an EL Sid performance

    • skyking26 says:

Less the complete meltdown. beauty! BB-balk-BB/WP.
THAT’s WHy you don’t throw crazy $$$ at this guy!!

      • therealsince86 says:

So you would not take 5 2/3 of shutout ball? Willie just did not let him have the melt down. With another base open there was still a good chance he got out of the inning with no runs.

  132. we all hear all these good things about Schneider’s defense, but holy cow he drops a lot of balls. It seems like he simply drops 2 or 3 pitches an inning. what gives?

  133. backinbusiness says:

why does werth get to go to 3B on the walk?

  134. wolverine193 says:

come on Willie, leave Ollie in there

  135. ravi3 says:

Utley leads it off with a fly out to shallow center – 1 out

Howard pops out to center – 2 out

Burrell draws a full count walk

**side note – they’ve got the organ going today which is a nice touch…playing Crazy Train while the Jacket visits the mound

Perez balks by making a pick-off throw to first with Delgado off the bag…He then walks Werth on a wild pitch. Burrell to 3rd – 2 out

Willie comes out and pulls Ollie, who is also on the cusp of the 100 pitch plateau. Smith coming in.

  136. nyjfanjmk says:

Great, here comes our “amazin” bullpen to hold this “huge” 2-0 lead, I’m confident…

  137. pedro4545 says:

Questionable call by Willie taking Perez out already…I would have let him either finish up the inning or give up a run…Hopefully Joe Smith makes him look like a genious and shows why I will never be a manager.

    • therealsince86 says:

I would have liked to see him finish the inning too, however we would be killing Willie if he left him in and Perez gave up a HR to Pedro Feliz.

    • Nightlife says:

I don’t know, stuff like this happened a lot last year to Perez where he was seemingly cruising then a bad defensive play (usually his own) and a walk, the next thing you know we would be down by 5 runs.

    • skyking26 says:

No ?–you CAN”T let Perez pitch to Feliz!

  138. Nightlife says:

    Good move, Willie.

  139. wolverine193 says:

I never feel comfortable with Joe Smith pitching and a runner on 3rd

  140. gem779 says:

Willie seems to have a good amount of confidence in Joe Smith, which seems to be fine to me. I don’t know who else we would use anyways..

  141. cbusmetsfan says:

Good…now this give us 3.1 innings to question Willie’s imept managerial ability. Let’s see how he falters…

    • cbusmetsfan says:

“inept” as in my spelling of the word inept was inept.

    • therealsince86 says:

And 3.1 innings to here guys like you complain over every move that does not work and ignore the ones that do.

  142. Jayperez says:

Did they get out of the inning. I cant watch the game and im pressing refresh like a mad man here lol.

  143. wolverine193 says:

Smith looks like he just throws and hopes it goes over the plate

  144. pedro4545 says:

    Uh oh…Come on Joe

  145. ground out to short to end the inning. Willies a genius for now.

  146. ravi3 says:

Smith walks Feliz to load the bases – 2 out Burrell on 3rd, Werth to 2nd.

Ruiz grounds to short, Reyes gets the out at 2nd – 3 out

  147. pedro4545 says:

    Nicely done

  148. gem779 says:

ground ball to Reyes, out of the inning!!!

  149. skyking26 says:

maybe all the Willie bashing can be put on hold now!
    Atleast ’til the next inn.

  150. QnsNative718 says:

Whew! We’re out the inning untouched..

  151. CornellMetsFan says:

alright, were out of that jam, but we cant have our starters only go 5-6 innings. when pedro comes back, you know youre not getting 7 out of him. that puts pressure on maine and ollie to go 7 innings and alleviate some of the pressure on our bullpen. the reason we imploded last year was because our bullpen was drained. willie cant be so eager to take the starters out.

    • therealsince86 says:

You can with a RH hitter who hits HR or SO against a struggling Perez. Especially in the home opener. Besides the pen should be decently rested.

      • skyking26 says:

Dude, stop the arguing for the sake of arguing-
Ollie’s freakin wheels were falling off!
Smith got us out of the inning AND perez’ control
was bad all day! you’d be the 1st one posting
“Fire Willie” if Perez fell behind and served on up to
Feliz–I like him but he aint Koufax!

        • therealsince86 says:

I assume you are talking to the guy ahead of me because as many would know I am a netural/borderline supporter of Willie.

    • cbusmetsfan says:

      And Willie was the manager…

      • therealsince86 says:

Thanks I was not sure if he was or not. You really pay attention don’t you?

    • murdertron3000 says:

I agree in principle, but this is Oliver Perez we are talking about. When the wheels come off, and they definitely seemed to be coming off, he tends to fly apart completely. I think he had to pull him out of there.

  152. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Now the question is does he live Smith in for another inning or not?

  153. twassel says:

    Yes. Try here:
    mlbDOTmlbDOTcom/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2008_04_08_phimlb_nynmlb_1

  154. pedro4545 says:

I wouldnt push my luck with Smith next inning….Lets go Sosa, Heilman, Wagner now.

  155. ravi3 says:

Delgado grounds out into the shift, Utley to Howard. Carlos retired for the first time today – 1 out

Pagan flies out to Victorino, who is doing his best impression of a hoover.

Church grounds out to short – 3 out

  156. wolverine193 says:

Take Smith out, let him leave with some confidence.

  157. ravi3 says:

Dobbs announced as a PH, Willie brings in Schoenweis…Phils counter by sending up Taguchi…

    • therealsince86 says:

Willie makes them waste a PH. Not too bad for somone as dumb as Willie right? :)

      • gem779 says:

        sheesh, shut up….

        • therealsince86 says:

So now I can’t make fun of the idiots that are always on Willie? Just laughing at what they would normally say.

        • gem779 says:

ok, ok. I just hate all the Willie hate. Our fans are just insane sometimes

        • therealsince86 says:

I agree, I am hoping to drive them off by always making fun of them. I know it won’t work but it makes me feel better.

  158. metsfansince1992 says:

    Where is Feliciano?

  159. metsfansince1992 says:

Yeah, but he hasn’t pitch in ages…

  160. skyking26 says:

WOwww deep breath!!-SS gets an out.

  161. pedro4545 says:

    I hate Jimmy Rollins..

  162. metsfansince1992 says:

Now is a good time to bring Feli. Or is too early?

  163. gem779 says:

    Feliciano time…i wish

  164. GiggityGoo says:

I hate Victorino … Get a Major League helmet you F’n tool

  165. Bobby Bones in SC says:

I got a sneakiy feeling Willie is either going to look like a genius or a goat.

  166. metchamp78 says:

the sny website just morphed from blue to silver in less than 2 minutes

  167. InsaneMetsFan says:

Why Schoenweis in the 7th, why not Feliciano????

  168. Bobby Bones in SC says:

    Make the move Willie!!!!

  169. therealsince86 says:

Now is time to bring in Pedro.

  170. nevets72 says:

I do not want Utley vs. Blowinweis.

  171. ravi3 says:

Taguchi works a full count, but grounds out to Easley – 1 out

Rollins lines a single to left – 1 out

Victorino lines the 3-2 pitch up the middle – 1 out

    **Where is Feliciano?!

Schoenweis hits Utley to load the bases…3rd HBP for Utley

  172. gem779 says:

    seriously, it’s time…..Feliciano…come on!

  173. Chances of Ryan Howard hitting a grand slam – 97.3% with 2.7% margin for error.

  174. pedro4545 says:

Utley HBP AGAIN?!? WTF IS GOING ON

  175. skyking26 says:

I’m a huge willie supporter but w/t/f is he doin?
    rollins,vic switch-utley,howard-lefty wheres pedro F.?
imean i know don omar made SS a multi-millionaire
and we got pedro off the scrap-heap but c’mon.
bases loaded now and the illie tv guys wanna know why
    Met fans boo him??????????????/

  176. gem779 says:

this place is gonna explode if the Show screws up

  177. nevets72 says:

    can you say 4-2?

  178. Church says:

    Hes gonna walk him.

  179. dgregs3 says:

It’s games like this that make me wonder if the Mets would be better with a different manager. Willie is practically handing them this game.

  180. dontstopbelieving says:

It’s utterly absurd that Feliciano is not in the game against the Phillies’ best lefty hitters. There is no excuse for this unless he is injured. And as a bonus, he can even pitch to righties, unlike SS. Close games can be won/lost by managerial decisions, and this is an awful one.

  181. gipper913 says:

Oh dear Lord. Why Suckyweis here? Where is Feliciano????

  182. gomets6091 says:

    a) Schoenweiss still sucks
    b) isn’t there a rule that a player has to make an attempt to get out of the way of the ball? Utley blatantly stepped into that pitch

  183. therealsince86 says:

I don’t know but there is no way you can leave in the Show for Howard. You have got to go with Feliciano here, why else is he on the team?
When I said too early I meant that we needed to save him for Utley and Howard well that came this inning and he should be in now.

  184. Holy God, the Mets totally forget how to play baseball against the Braves and Phillies. Things happen against these two teams that ive never seen happen before.

  185. pedro4545 says:

    Wow…..just wow

  186. GiggityGoo says:

God Schoenweiss sucks!!!!!!!!!!! Why Pedro? Why not Schoenweiss?

  187. ravi3 says:

Would have been a DP ball, but Delgado nails Utley in the back while throwing to 2nd. Tie game.

  188. zigner says:

    2008 looks like 2007!

  189. almar1965 says:

If they blow this Willie better hide.

  190. foul bunt strikeout says:

    thanks stinken-weis

    you (singing)

    SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  191. gem779 says:

the crowd is letting Show hear it

    • skyking26 says:

Before everyone calls for willies head, omar MUST share
some of this ! Schoenweiss 3yrs ? whos never had ONE
      good year–c’mon!!

  192. almar1965 says:

UGH! I understand they need to hit the Phillies players, but enough is enough already.

Anyone else saw this coming a mile away? I did…

  193. therealsince86 says:

Show got the pitch we wanted and Delgado gambled too much. Just take the easy out and give up one run.

  194. gem779 says:

    thanks Willie……….

  195. yeeaa says:

    Scott Schoenweiss Karma

  196. ravi3 says:

In all fairness here, Schoenweis would have been out of the jam, as he got Howard to ground to Delgado. Carlos made a bbad throw, hitting Utley in the back, leading to 2 runs scoring.

The blame here has got to be on Delgado.

    • gomets6091 says:

agreed, but Show still is the guy who loaded the bases.

      • gipper913 says:

Ravi…Suckywies still put the team into that jam and the fact remains when the inning began, the Mets had a 2 run lead and Suckyweis came in to start inning……when inning ended, Mets were losing.

That is the karma of the “Show”.

  197. gomets6091 says:

ugh….it wouldn’t be a Mets-Phillies game without the Mets finding new and exciting ways to blow a lead. Jeez….welcome back to September 2007

  198. dontstopbelieving says:

Utley was definitely out of the baseline, but not enough such that the ump would call it.

  199. QnsNative718 says:

    Unbelievable.

  200. Nightlife says:

    Man, Delgado.

  201. cbkolb says:

    frigging awesome…here we go again

  202. nevets72 says:

you have to f’in kidding me!

  203. therealsince86 says:

I can’t blame Willie for this however, again Show did what he was supposed to do. Get Howard out. Delgado just made a poor throw and Reyes was out of position.

    • rogasm says:

How does Willie not get this blame?

      • therealsince86 says:

For Delgado making a bad throw and Reyes being out of position? Would Pedro went out and got the double play on his own?

    • almar1965 says:

Actually one can make an argument that you can blame this on Willie. Blowenweis got himself in this situation to begin with and he should not have been there. Where was Feliciano? Is he even alive? I would rather take my chances with Feliciano vs. a righty than Blowenweis.

      • therealsince86 says:

I would not have brought in Feliciano until Utley came up. Willie left Show in but he got the double play ball and we would have been out of the inning. So while I may have done something different I can’t fault him for a thowing error.

    • zen says:

i can’t believe willie didn’t turn the double play. he has to get the ball to reyes there

  204. almar1965 says:

If they lose this series against a team that pretty much stuck the knife in as deep as it can get late last year, they may as well move to Citifield now because Shea will explode.

    • Nightlife says:

Because a series in the second week of the season is the most important series to ever be played.

  205. QnsNative718 says:

    No seriously, Unbelievable!

  206. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

its deja vou all over again

  207. skillsets says:

Mets baseball!!! Who’s feeling the excitement???

  208. nevets72 says:

What bothers me the most about this, I fully expect them to blow the GD game. That sucks. ARRRGGGGHHHHH!

    • almar1965 says:

I know the feeling. I had a sense this game was going to leave their grasp due to the bullpen which has shown itself to be overrated so far.

We need Sanchez back effective in the worst way!

  209. Jim says:

I know Delgado made the throwing error, but Schoeneweis loaded the bases. He SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • extrawhitemeat says:

The lesson here as always is that there is plenty of blame to go around to EVERYONE.. which is why it’s a Willie issue…

      • therealsince86 says:

Hey EWM it’s funny but you seem to have shown up exactly when we started losing. Same as last season. Are you the devil?

        • extrawhitemeat says:

I’ve been here thereal… I didn’t comment too much on spring training cause frankly I have no tolerance for all the crap stories that make their way around…

But to see this bull pen still stink after we did nothing to upgrade it.. is not a suprise..

Toss in the same attitude brought by the same manager that sunk the ship last year.. and I dunno why anyone is surprised….

        • therealsince86 says:

You forgot to throw in some of the same fans that have no clue but make great armchairs.

        • extrawhitemeat says:

I thought the point of a blog was to get to be a bit of an arm chair?

  210. wilson1 says:

Two runs against Jamie Moyer. This is like a sick joke.

  211. shamsky says:

If the other team can’t beat us, we’ll beat ourselves. This team just can’t play 9 solid innings.

  212. almar1965 says:

    Seriously…where is Feliciano???????

Did he step on Willie’s shoes, breath on his 77-78 WS ring? WHAT?????

  213. mets31488 says:

    I hate our freakin bullpen

  214. mets31488 says:

    Sosa, Smith, Schoeneweis…………..all garbage

  215. Steve.P says:

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

  216. CornellMetsFan says:

Willie Randolph and the Heart Breakers!

  217. gomets6091 says:

    ARGHHHHHHH

I hate the Phillies so much.

  218. Church says:

    Painful to watch.

  219. huge_mets_fan11 says:

The saddest part is I have no confidence in our offense right now

  220. nyjfanjmk says:

This is like a sickening replay

  221. nevets72 says:

    Blehhhhhhhh!

I just puked all over my desk.

  222. ravi3 says:

Sosa on to pitch, with Endy taking over in left

Burrell flies out to right – 2 out

Werth goes the other way with the slider. Utley scores. Howard to 2nd – 2 out Phils 3 – Mets 2

Feliz pops out to shallow left – 3 out

  223. therealsince86 says:

Again, I guess Willie should have brought in homerun Heilman instead of Sosa. What was he thinking? That major league pitchers should be able to do their job? What a joke.

    • skyking26 says:

thats what willies thinking given the fact that like mota
last yr who he kept pitchin over & over.like schoenweiss
these are omars guys. but again whats w/feliciano?

  224. cbkolb says:

Seriously though…are the Phillies the most resilient team in baseball? Or, are the Mets that bad?

    • extrawhitemeat says:

We’re that bad…outside of Johan this team fixed not a THING this off season…

      Wise is on the DL
      Registar off the roster
Sanchez still can’t pitch two days in a row

Whose suprised the bull pen still sucks???

The offense is worse which is why we waste a 7 innings of one run from Johan

      Same moron manager

How is anyone reallly surprised this is happening????

      • rogasm says:

No….and it really hirts to say that too. I have absolutely NO confidence in this team…just like Sept. 07

  225. shamsky says:

SOSA – sucks, Schoenweiess – sucks, Heilman – Sucks, Wise -Sucks..

Gee you think that hurts us?

  226. wilson1 says:

I will be shocked if this team wins more than 80-85 games this year. They are just not very good.

  227. mets31488 says:

and 2 runs off Moyer?!?!?! The Nats wrecked Moyer and we only managed 2 runs off him?!?!?! This offense better pick up and win this game because this team is already looking like 2007 The Sequel

    • extrawhitemeat says:

hey at least schinder calls a great game.. and pagan is a great story…we don’t need actual players….

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

        haha, nice

      • skyking26 says:

Yeah and Alous got and extra 10mil,castillos got 20,
schoenweiss is set for life as is mota, valentin picked
up a few xtra hundred Gs,Is julio franco still cashing
NYMet checks etc, etc, etc and so it goes for the teflon
Don,Omar the Great. What a friggin’ joke!!!

  228. rogasm says:

Unreal…At one point do we start to question Omar’s ability to put together a bullpen along with Willie’s ability to manage it?

  229. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

so whats the bullpens exuse now? they tired from all the days off and rain delays? oh i know, they just suck.

  230. so when does omar say enough is enough????

  231. gipper913 says:

Willie Randolph – leadership, intelligence, strategy.

  232. plummetdown says:

suckyweise….same old story all over again

  233. plummetdown says:

willie = i trust my guys. suckweise for the win…

  234. cousinrk says:

what I don’t get is why does Schoenweis get to be the first lefty all the time, especially in the 7th inning when you might not need another lefty at this point? I get it if its the 5th but the 7th? It should be Feliciano. I just don’t get why Pedro hasn’t pitched in any important situations so far and Schoenweis has several times

    • therealsince86 says:

In all fairness, if Show had done his job then Feliciano would have been in there to face Utley and Howard the next inning.

  235. RPsJacket says:

I’m real interested in how they respond. We had the picthing matchup, only 2 against Moyer is pretty sad. The Phils are too good to completely shut down.

Its early, but at some point you have to beat these guys. Gut check time.

  236. dannyM says:

    Firre Willy (clap, clap, clapclapclap)

And now the awful phillies bullpen will look like the next coming of christ…

  237. metsfan81 says:

has feliciano pitched yet this season?!?!?!?!

  238. cbkolb says:

Whats worse? 2 runs or 4 hits off of Moyer?

  239. gomets6091 says:

alright, come on offense. If there’s one consolation here, it’s that the Phillies might be the only bullpen in baseball worse than ours. I’m praying for a Tom Gordon sighting today.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

youre right they are, except when they face us then theyre the late 90s yankees bullpen.

  240. isiah thomas can couch this team better

  241. SadWilly says:

is Feliciano injured???? where has he been

  242. smc says:

OK, a big rally here (like putting up 5 runs) takes these guys out of our heads. Let’s show some life!

  243. foul bunt strikeout says:

I hope Schowenweis gets struck by lightning!

    Our bullpen is a JOKE

Thanks for ruining everyone’s day bullpen!

  244. zen says:

base hit up the middle for willie

  245. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Throwing a 3 hit shutout after 6 and now look at this mess. I don’t know who to blame, Willie or the pen. I just don’t understand the use of the pen though, especially in an important a head to head series with Phillthies!

  246. metsfan227 says:

I am the last panic about early games person but this is getting ridiculous.

At what point is this offense going to start kicking in? If we can’t score some runs off of a 45 year old Moyer than what happens when we face some really good pitcher?

  247. Lets go Mets says:

The mets bullpen already gave up there share of runs, right now the mets will return the favor on the Phillies horrific pen.
The mets will win this game!!!

  248. gem779 says:

    BSNI…another hit…wtf

  249. MDMetfan says:

I said it in a thread yesterday. Something is missing from this team Can’t get it done in a key moment against a hated rival in your home opener. Just horrible pitching and lousy defense. I know it’s early but …..this looks awfully familiar.

  250. zen says:

willie hits into a double play

    • SadWilly says:

dude its kinda funny but it still doesn’t take away the fact that Willie is without a doubt the worst manager in the NL.. He flat out has no clue how to run a ball club

      • therealsince86 says:

What are your stats to back up that Willie is the worst manager in the NL? Do you even know all the managers?

    • WozzyBearRU says:

Can someone please explain to me why Randolph does not bunt Endy Chavez with no one out, Schneider on 1st, and the Mets down 1?

WTF is the matter with Randolph?

      • therealsince86 says:

I guess he figured that with Endy’s speed that most hits would not result in a dp.

  251. mets31488 says:

what a joke. WHERE’S THE BUNT!?!?!?!

  252. gem779 says:

man, wtf….let endy HIT..not BUNT…as good a bunter as he is

  253. wolverine193 says:

jesus christ, this team is a disgrace

  254. huge_mets_fan11 says:

There you HAVE to BUNT, stupid move by Willie

  255. Nightlife says:

    Tom Gordon warming up fellows.

  256. wolverine193 says:

    base hit, fcking surprise

  257. mets31488 says:

And if Endy bunts its a tie game. Willie is terrible

  258. zen says:

base hit willie. willie needs to steal second here

    • gomets6091 says:

are you calling everyone on the team willie for a reason? Is it supposed to be funny? I don’t get it…

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

ignore him he thinks hes so much more intelligent than everyone and refuses to realize that willie randolph is a complete moron. when your offense is struggling to score runs and you have a leadoff man on down 1 run with the top of your order coming up you do 1 thing and 1 thing only BUNT. willie doesnt think so then guys like endy chavez ground into double plays that kill any life you had in the inning.

      • therealsince86 says:

Obviously some posters on here think that Willie is responsible for everything that happens in the game.

  259. plummetdown says:

you gotta be worried about reyes…..

  260. wolverine193 says:

you could throw a high school bullpen agains the Mets right now..wouldn’t matter

  261. CornellMetsFan says:

that never ever happened 2 years ago. this team used up all its karma in 06. please, now, jose, do something… steal a base.

  262. gem779 says:

    steal Reyes..come on

  263. metsfansince1992 says:

Feliciano this year, one inning pitched. Even Figueroa, a late addition,, has pitch more….

  264. GiggityGoo says:

Why does God hate the Mets ?!? Anyone ????

    • gomets6091 says:

      that’s a homerun pre-Citi Field

      Mother F*&$@%

    • gomets6091 says:

oh, and God hates the Mets because Jose Reyes used to have handshake dances with everyone on the team. Obviously.

  265. zen says:

willie hits it to the wall…nope

  266. plummetdown says:

willie randolph= i trust my guys. i can taste the champagne now guys.

  267. ravi3 says:

Schneider leads off with a single

Chavez bunting on the 1st pitch, swings on the 2nd…gets it behind Durbin, but it bounces right to Rollins, who turns the DP – 2 out

Reyes lines a single up the middle – 2 out

Easley hits it to deep left, but the ball stays in the park, and is caught by Taguchi – 3 out

  268. Jim says:

    Hey Matt,
why don’t you put up a Willie confidence poll now?

  269. CornellMetsFan says:

HAHAHAHAH I HATE THIS FRICKING TEAM. PLEASE, KEEP DOING THIS TO US. of course, when teixeira hits a pop up, it carries out of the park. but when easley drives one, it falls just short. i just cant take this every day. have we gotten one single break this whole year!?

  270. sheahey81 says:

I hate the new announcer on WFAN. He sound like he is rubbing it in when the Mets dont play well.

  271. Jayperez says:

    wow just wow…..

  272. wolverine193 says:

This team is just BRUTAL to watch

  273. njmatt says:

Can the members of this team do what last year’s squad couldn’t do and grow a pair?

  274. cbkolb says:

It appears as if everyone, from the ball players to the fans, are pressing hard at this point…

  275. plummetdown says:

johan santana = damit i should have stayed with the twins…atlest i would have gotton more run support……

  276. dontstopbelieving says:

Heilman in to pitch. Another outstanding double switch by Willie, which enabled Endy Chavez to bat (and hit into a DP) last inning instead of Marlon Anderson, the better hitter.

Seriously, I have no idea where his head is.

  277. metsfan81 says:

that ball goes out if citi field isnt there blockin the wind blowing out lol

  278. CornellMetsFan says:

we need santana to start 55 games this year. with this teams luck, he will blow out his arm tomorrow

  279. wolverine193 says:

I’m not going to kill Willie, yes he’s a bad manager, but this team just sucks. And I’m not basing this on 6 games, I’m basing this on the fact that since last May they’ve been under .500.

  280. Jayperez says:

at least we got the middle of the order coming up….in the ninth……lets hope for a Miracle…that is if the bullpen can keep the game the way it is for another half inning….

  281. skyking26 says:

why don’t the editing facists who run this site put up an Omar
    confidence poll/rating?

  282. sheaheykid says:

This is so depressing. I honestly don’t even know what else to say. I agree with the post above, we’re going to struggle for 80 wins this year. Randolph is such a poor manager its comical. Comical for the rest of the league, just painful for us, actually. How does Feliciano not pitch the 7th? How?

  283. Stems says:

There are way too many bums in the bullpen.

Does anyone have any confidence in ANYONE in the pen???

I blame these struggles on the weather. That rain out killed us. We had good things going for us: 13-0 victory, Braves used 7 pitchers the night before, got Maine going. Then the rain out, Braves pitchers get rested, Maine gets an extra day of rest which he didn’t need and the team becomes flat.

    THATS HOW YOU BUNT!!!!

man, wtf….let endy HIT..not BUNT…as good a bunter as he is

    which is it?

  290. mattygreen says:

Willie is terrible, he has been from day one. He’s never out managed anyone, is in way over his head as a manager in NY of a National League team.

Omar is on the hook too, i still can’t get over 4 years for Luis Castillo, who (huge surprise) got hurt and had to leave the game. He, Alou and Pedro are all card carrying members of the “past their prime” club.

What a joke. the sad thing about this team is that they’re only as good as their bullpen, which is terrible. but that’s what you get when the starting pitcher gets yanked in the 6th inning when he’s pitching a shut out— you’ll live and die with the pen.

    • skyking26 says:

Pedros understandable but Alou twice? Mota last yr?
counting on Sanchez after 2 yrs, continued love affair
w/valentin? bringing back Easley and on and on.

  291. SadWilly says:

They have ZERO confidence in themselves. They haven’t left last season behind because they have a coward of a manager.

  292. ScottN says:

Funny, we’re just preconditioned to panic at this point as fans. I have to say I don’t like this legacy that the collapse have left upon us.

1 run game, folks, meat of the order due up in the 8th.

  293. plummetdown says:

delgado for gold glove. awesome man…good job

  294. mets31488 says:

How funny is it that I don’t like 80% of the guys on my favorite team

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

considering i only actually like david wright thats puts me at disliking 96% of my favorite team.

  295. metsfan81 says:

we f’n suck…looks like its goin to be a lonnnnnng year—-rollins strikes again

  296. ravi3 says:

Heilman walks Ruiz to lead off the inning.

Taguchi with a sac bunt. Ruiz to 2nd – 1 out

Rollins with a single just out of the reach of Delgado. Ruiz scores – 1 out. Phils 4 – Mets 2

  297. wolverine193 says:

Going back to work, this team isn’t worth my time

  298. Mister Koo says:

Prediction for the 9th: Mets load the bases with nobody out, Lidge throws a wild pitch, runner out at the plate trying to score. Walks the next batter. Wright hits a gap shot which Victorino makes an improbable diving catch on, and doubles off someone to end the game.

  299. WozzyBearRU says:

What do ya know? Charlie Manuel bunts after the lead off walk, and Rollins drives him in…..

    • RPsJacket says:

I’m embarrassed. how many walks today?

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

that basically proves that literally everyone in the stadium wouldve bunted with chavez there other than willie.

  300. gipper913 says:

The Phillies and the braves are the teams to beat.

    The Mets….just take beatings.

Let’s just fast forward to the end of May when Omar finally shakes things up and tries to save his own backside by axing Willie “Brains” Randolph.

  301. gomets6091 says:

did I ever mention that I despise Jimmy Rollins.

  302. mets31488 says:

I’m looking at this team and I just really don’t see how they have a chance at a World Series title. Bringing Castillo back was a mistake. Delgado is off to a decent start but c’mon how long is it gonna last? He’s a shadow of his old self. Pedro is already hurt. We technically don’t even have a 5th starter. Maine and Perez both won 15 games last year but you never know what you’re gonna get from them every start. And let’s face it, other than Wagner our bullpen is a joke. Then throw in the fact that both the Braves and Phillies have good teams, I just don’t see this team getting far into the postseason………………And oh yea, we have Willie Randolph as our manager.

  303. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

ok so the phillies just did what we were supposed to do last inning lead off guy on base, light hitting OF sub sacs him to 2nd, leadoff SS hits single to score him. i will never put manual in the same breath as willie its an insult to cholly.

    • Nightlife says:

Thats nice and all, but I don’t see what the big deal is about not sacrificing with Endy the last inning. A runner on first with no outs scores more times than a runner on second with 1 out, and that is a fact.

  304. Ferraro41 says:

And oh by the way…Schoeneweis doesn’t have the market cornered on sucking. Heilman is right there with him. Good going Aaron. Way to keep the team in the game.

  305. huge_mets_fan11 says:

I hope that when Utley and Howard come up Pedro comes, you have to use him here. But knowing Willie he will leave Heilman in.

  306. skillsets says:

Those who do not respect history are condemned to repeat it…

Keep telling me Willie Randolph should be the manager of this “team.” Come on. Somebody tell me something witty.

  307. rogasm says:

Must be nice to have a guy on your team that comes through when it matters…Where is that Philly fan that is always on here? Can you tell me how that feels, please?

  308. Jayperez says:

Its just tough to stay positive about this team. Its like if its not one thing its the other. Yea delgado actually looked good at the plate(from what i read) but missed a crucial play at the plate. Yea Ollie looked good for his outing, but the bullpen messed that up. Somethings got to give. I know its only one week but so far they just talk a big game….dont see any results…..KMON ITS THE LAST OPENER AT SHEA FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD SHOW SOME HEART!!!

    • therealsince86 says:

Let’s not start the heart crap again. I am sure they are all trying hard, maybe even too hard.

      • Jayperez says:

no because im not watching the game and i already know the stupid a** look on willies face and the players like “here we go again……….” someone thats watching the game correct me if im wrong.

        • gipper913 says:

You hit the nail on the head.

Add in the SNY booth surmising that “Feliciano MUST be hurt” – implying that otherwise, Willie is just dumber than we all thought – which is saying something!

  309. therealsince86 says:

Look, the problem is still the pen. I am not sure Willie can ever win when the pen can’t do their job.

  310. CornellMetsFan says:

jesus f’ing christ. this team is unreal. this is the worst team to watch in any sport, not only in the US, but in the world. im sick of this same sh-t every single game. and watch, i promise you, i will bet my life, that we score runs now that the game is getting out of reach. homer heilman is trash, smith will go back to the minors, we have 4 starters who could pitch into the 7th inning if their mother’s life depended on it, a lame-duck AL manager trapped in the NL, two rivals who absolutely own us and can beat us in every way imaginable, a distraught fan base, and a ridiculous amount of pressure from last year still lingering. dont forget, when wagner gets his shot, he will blow some big saves. this team is trash. trash trash trash trash and more trash. id rather follow a team like the pirates who give me no expectations whatsoever, instead of breaking my heart every other day. can we beat the phils or braves? ever? to quote chris russo: JUST ONE TIME

  311. ya gotta believe…right?

  312. nyjfanjmk says:

Don’t the Tigers need some relief pitching? Would they be interested in say…Scott Schowenweiss?

  313. toomanyuniforms says:

Methinks the Phillies are a better baseball team. We have a few young stars (one of whom has lost his mind, apparently) and a gaggle of broken down has beens. I was a cheerleader for the “it’s early” chorus, and it’s true, but guess what? This team continues to disappoint and deflate because . . . . (drumroll) they are not that good. Simple as that. It’s too early to call for Willie’s job, but I would be surprised if he makes it through May.

  314. mad_mike says:

Heilman doing a bang up job in the 8th

  315. piazzadabm says:

Let’s face facts. We’re never gonna win consistently with our bullpen…gear up for a LONG season.

    • Ferraro41 says:

Bullpen is one issue. The (im)potent offense is another. Two runs against a 45 year old guy who throws 37 MPH.

  316. maure19 says:

this looks like its going to be a long year. i remember sometime around early august when the mets were playing mediocre and some of us were ripping the team there were some who called us “chicken littles”

there is NO way this team comes back in this game: they have no heart.

    the willie watch begins

  317. dontstopbelieving says:

Utley up again. Where in hell is Pedro Feliciano?

  318. likeitoughttabe29 says:

Heilmannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. i hate stupid stats but that is 2 blown holds in a row. great job by him to make games all that tougher to win.

they should just hit utley again.

  319. maure19 says:

    where is pedro feliciano?

  320. gipper913 says:

Luckily, we have Pelfrey tomorrow…that’ll stop the bleeding and save the bullpen.

    NOT.

  321. metsfan227 says:

You know, I am starting to believe Jimmy Rollins. I think the Phillies DO want it more.

The Mets are constantly playing like the don’t want to make a big deal out of any one game, there is always tomorrow, it’s a long season let’s not wear ourselves out at the beginning, etc.

It is really getting nauseating to watch this.

    • gomets6091 says:

I couldn’t agree more. I’m not giving up on the season, but they really need to have a gut check in that locker room.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

agreed. the braves and phils LOVE beating us, chipper named his freakin kid shea for crying out loud bc he owns us there. bobby cox intentionally sets up his rotation to give us smoltz every series. both teams fight like its a playoff game every time and we take the “we’ll get em tomorrow” approach. disgusting.

    • ScottN says:

Team takes on the personality of its manager, and the best way to distance themselves from last year was to have another guy leading the charge.

I hope they turn it around and win 10 in a row, or just turn this game around, which could still happen (Phils don’t exactly have a lights-out pen). But I think this team has all the talent to win, but they’re falling back into the same old traps as last year already–you can just see it.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, I want Bobby V back. Bobby V would have been defending Reyes’ dances as the kind of spunk and swagger a team needs rather than trying to cram him into some kind of stoic Yankee mold.

I really think this permeates throughout the team, and that’s the real change that needs to be made. But it’s too late, and I fear the Mets will be out of the race before they can make that change.

It just looks and feels SO clear to me. They’re pressing, and it’s just killing me.

  322. JSC1968 says:

I hate Heilman, I hate the Jacket and the Wilpons needed to spend more money. Santana was not enough. We let Bradford go and Showy has shown nothing.

    I just hate this.

  323. MDMetfan says:

I really do hate Heilman. I don’t care about his overallnumbers…blah…blah blah. It just seems that when we really need him he always seems to come up small.

  324. metchamp78 says:

    Bottomline….

The Mets are a team of Pu**ies. The Phillies know it and the Mets know it.

    Advantage-Philly

Bobby Cox can out-manage Willie in close games

    Advantage-Braves

This is going to be a long season. Starting 0-3 against these teams is not good

  325. mets31488 says:

    Utley is gonna homer

  326. johnfromflushing says:

this bunch just dont have that big game mentality… they wilt under any pressure… bats , gloves, throws , pitching…. everything just goes into meltdown…

  327. mets31488 says:

    THIS TEAM SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

  328. plummetdown says:

    METS ARE IN TROUBLE…

IF YOU CANT SEE THAT. YOUR JUST LYING TO YOURSELF

  329. ravi3 says:

Passed ball by Schneider, Rollins to 2nd – 1 out

Meltdown by Heilman, who just walked Victorino. Rollins on 2nd – 1 out

Utley with a double that scores Rollins. Victorino to third – 1 out Phils 5 – Mets 2

  330. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

pat burrell with the bases loaded, gee i wonder how this is going to end

    • donnywahlberg says:

I kinda want burrell to hit one out right now. I swear. If this game got blown open, I’d feel better about it.

  331. smc says:

I think the Phillies are in our heads (probably the fans’ heads more so than the players.) We need a big comeback somewhere– today would be nice…

(Since Utley doubled as I wrote this, looks like today is looking unlikely. We need a blowout against these guys. How about getting 10 runs tomorrow in support of Big Pelf?)

    • gomets6091 says:

I disagree about the “probably the fans’ heads more so than the players” part. They are CLEARLY in the players heads too. Heck, even the new guys are getting into the act (Schneider 2 passed balls). The Mets just find new ways to lose to the Phillies. Of the soon to be 9 straight losses (or is it 10, I’ve lost track) to them, the Mets have gift wrapped at least 6 of them, if not more than that. It’s really pathetic. I don’t know what it’s gonna take.

And everyone who says we just need to fire Willie to bring in a new mentality: firing Bobby V. didn’t bring in a new mentality that let us finally beat the Braves, it brought us Art Howe. It wasn’t till 4 years after Bobby V. was gone that we finally started beating the Braves.

  332. piazzadabm says:

    Fire. Willie. Randolph. Now.

  333. gem779 says:

just bring in Muniz and see what he’s got…………

  334. huge_mets_fan11 says:

The one saving grace is that Rollins is injured and going into the clubhouse.

  335. plummetdown says:

mets never do well against braves…and now the phillies….

but there okay against everyone else…

just pray braves and phillies dont make the playoffs…

    • garycarter says:

Why…so the Mets have some company on the golf course this October?

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

why would you want the mets to play the braves or phillys in golf. phil mikelson would blush at the choke job we’d do on the back 9.

  336. Ferraro41 says:

Did Feliciano get deported? If not, his arm better be hanging on the floor, else I can’t wait to hear Willie’s excuse for why he didn’t use him. “gotta stick with my guys”.

  337. njmatt says:

So…I’m starting to think the bullpen wasn’t “just exhausted” last year as we were constantly told.

  338. Nightlife says:

Oh man, these posts are making me laugh pretty hard at the moment.

I almost want to root for the Phillies just for these hilarious reactions.

  339. tfc3rid says:

The Phillies have heart… This team is gutless…

I thought they were going to play pedal to the metal… I guess Willie doesn’t get it…

    • thrilledge 4 prez says:

this team lost its fire when they dumped milledge and loduca…… i pray we dont get into a brawl with the phils cuz it only give them another way to beat us down

  340. Bobby Bones in SC says:

Wow what a pen. 1 2/3 innings. 5 hits 4 walks and 5 runs. Pathetic!

Any of you who were gutting me like a fish for not supporting Hielman in the pen want to weigh in now? Okay, maybe that was a bit much. I’m just pissed!

  341. mets31488 says:

Pshhhh this bullpen wasn’t overworked and tired last year, they just suck. It’s really simple to see that.

    • chew13 says:

It is dude. I totally agree. How many times going back to the 2006 playoffs do we have to watch aaron heilman fail in a tough spot!? He’s not a good reliever. I don’t care what his numbers are. He just over powers the lesser teams.

    • JSC1968 says:

nah, i think they suck now. But, they got their confidence busted up real good nd now the NL East is in their heads.

  342. zen says:

if heilman throws enough pitches this should qualify as a start

  343. likeitoughttabe29 says:

Only 148 days until the Giants Kick off.

  344. This just in: The Mets are a bad, borderline mediocre ballclub with too many players who have the penchant to choke it up in big spots of big games. Get used to it. It won’t get better. I love the Mets more than anything, but good god am I sick of this old song and dance. Yes, I know, this is not a big game, it’s April. We’ll see.

    • chew13 says:

No dude I disagree. It is a big game. Maybe not in the standings but this team beat our a$$ last year when it counted and are about about to win 9 straight against us. The we have the nerve to talk “ish” in spring training. Now you’re letting them spoil your last home opener @ shea. This was the game and series to make a statement that things are different. The truth is though, it’s not different. Our lineup is soft and our bullpen wayy overrated.

    • Ferraro41 says:

Games in April count, too. One more win in Aprl, May and June last year, and we would have been in the playoffs, even with the collapse.

  345. Jayperez says:

are they out of this inning?

  346. plummetdown says:

the offense sucked last year…what did omar do?

    pretty much nothing…

the bullpen sucked last year…what did he do?

    pretty much nothing….

so basically we are in trouble…

  347. 3 run game 2 times up its not ovaaa

  348. SadWilly says:

hahaha ok guys,,, The jokes over,, I should of told you earlier but then it wouldn’t of been any fun…

Just wanted to let you know that this is actually HELL and Willie is the Anti Christ… Have a great season!!!

  349. JSC1968 says:

Let’s see how you guys make this Willie’s fault?

    MY GOD!!!! Heilman sucks!Q@!@!!!!!

Change his arm angle, do something!

    Pitching, Pitching, Pitching.

    Omar, get us some pitching!!!!

    • SadWilly says:

Its not Willie’s fault that the team looks Tired, depressed, has no confidence in themselves.. Its not Willie’s fault that he have the managerial abilities of pretzel vendor..

  350. ravi3 says:

kinda stopped paying attention for a minute, but Heilman gets Burrell and Werth to fly out.

  361. mad_mike says:

    12 strikes, 17 balls…nice job Heilman…NOT!

  362. ASod1975 says:

One thing I’m wondering. Was Feliciano ailing before the season started or did he get hurt sometime after that (his lone appearance was in the 13-0 win, which seems like years ago). If he was banged up, why not start him on the 15-day DL and give a spot to Rincon. I’m tired of Schoeneweis in any big spot, and letting the righties get pounded by lefty sluggers (Utley vs. Heilman, Kelly Johnson vs. Sosa). It’s costing the Mets games, and as we saw last year, every game counts.

  363. mets31488 says:

  366. maure19 says:

this team looks so down, its unbelievable

  367. Nightlife says:

Oh man, oh man I just heard Rick Astley playing when SNY came back.

Who cares if the Mets lose today, we all ended up winners in one way or another.

    • mets31488 says:

LOL The Mets embarassed themselves and then got Rick Rolled, this day couldn’t get any worse for them.

  368. Jayperez says:

lol. aww man welp we gotta patch together 3 runs in 2 innings. Lets see what this team is about.

  369. smc says:

    Ya gotta believe!

Didn’t some on this blog say they would rather start slow and roar back? Or are we too emotionally fragile to do it? One win against these guys will cure alot.

  370. likeitoughttabe29 says:

The mets bullpen should take the advice of Rick Astley.

Is it me or do the Mets look like they are stuck in september of last year. Where is heart or the passion in this team… I know its early in the season, but I can’t help but feel like I did when glavine was on the mound in the finale last year!

  377. likeitoughttabe29 says:

Here comes the ol’ mets slap to the face

  378. mets31488 says:

What a surprise, Delgado chokes in a big spot. Im having 07 flash backs

    • therealsince86 says:

Come on Delgado is responsible for 1 of our big 2 runs. Lay off him for his offense.

  379. johnfromflushing says:

it’s undeniably glaring, that the problems that caused “the collapse ” are still an issue today…..

and it has nothing to do with being early……

    • napes22 says:

Nope, it has to do with our weak bullpen and Willie’s inability to manage it.

    • gipper913 says:

Odd, considering there was so much accountability for the collapse and the team dumped its erstwhile leader Randolph after the collapse in order to help turn the page.

      What’s that? Oh, …really?

      Nevermind.

  380. maure19 says:

can we ever get a big hit?????????????????????????????????/

  381. nyjfanjmk says:

It’s ok, Brady Clark has the force on his side

  382. napes22 says:

Why do people constantly bash the team as a whole. They played well as a unit and should still be winning. Every aspect of this game was in our hands. Delgado’s error killed us, but what really killed us is Willlie’s inability to manage a bullpen. Swallow your pride and allow Peterson to choose the arms that protect our leads. WIllie’s clueless.

  383. likeitoughttabe29 says:

yes, it’s early in the season, but there’s a reason why this game reminds you of last september…because this team has played the exact same lifeless, uninspired, and scared baseball as they did then.

all the talk over spring training about how they were gonna come out with a chip on their shoulder this year and set the tone has been exposed as just that, talk.

whether this is because last year is still in their heads, or because they just aren’t as good of a team as either the phils or braves is tbd.

either way i am now firmly in the fire willie randolph camp. both for his blatant and horrendous inability to make any sort of decent in game managerial decisions, and for the way this team has played.

  391. likeitoughttabe29 says:

What happened to Heilman’s claim that because of Citi Field the ball was now a carrying out of shea. balls have been dying all day.

  392. MDMetfan says:

Thank God for the New York Football Giants. I can’t believe I actually looked forward to this all winter.

  393. mets31488 says:

Brady Clark just had probably the best AB for the Mets today. That really says a lot about this team

  394. zen says:

    nice ab for willie there

    • toomanyuniforms says:

      It’s old.

I agree that Willie doesn’t make the throws, etc., etc., but it’s a baseball truism that if a team has lost it’s way, psychologically, they shake things up by changing managers? Is it fair? No. Does it work? Usually not, but ask Jack McKeon.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Sorry — there’s an extra question mark in there. Guess the Mets are rubbing off on me.

      • zen says:

it’s old to stop analyzing the game too along with the players. they’ve has a free ride. if delgado makes that play the mets win this game.

fire him. just make sure you hire someone who has at least been to a world series as a manager.

fire leyland too. tigers had a great team that missed the playoffs last year then started 0-7 this year. in fact, trade managers

        • toomanyuniforms says:

You can’t change players now. You can change managers. Again, unfair, but true. If anyone believes that this team has the talent to win, it’s clear that they need someone else to guide them.

Here’s another question: if the guy doesn’t strategize well and he doesn’t motivate his players, what does he bring to the team? Please, tell me.

If your answer is that the manager doesn’t really matter, or has a nonspecific, difficult to pin down effect on the team, well this isn’t charity. Why not roll the dice and change the manager? It’s low risk, at least.

        • zen says:

yes, but we can talk about the players’ performances to evalaute the game. even if willie isn’t a good manager it doesn’t have an impact on most games. maybe 3 or 4. not every game.

just bring in a manager that has done more than willie meaning he has been to or won the ws. i’m tired of reading the silliness.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

You CANNOT put a number on “manager effect,” but that does not mean that it doesn’t exist. These are human beings, having human experiences. Team psychology matters. They are trying to perform at their peak.

Yes, we can criticize players, but, believe it or not, for the Mets to right the ship, it’s far more practical to can Willie than it is to release Delgado.

  395. RPsJacket says:

    one time, baby..

  396. mad_mike says:

Church has an good opportunity now AB

  397. mets31488 says:

And let the Milledge comments start

  398. RPsJacket says:

why doesn’t charlie put a righty in to face the lefty, willie would..

  399. keith hernandezs moustache says:

will everyone here apologize to themselves and every other sane met fan if pelfrey pitches well tomorrow and they win? not saying he def will… its an honest question

    • likeitoughttabe29 says:

No, it will be a fluke and we will bitch and moan about something. Again years of rooting for this team makes you a pessimist (spelling) and thats how it will always be.

    • metfaninla says:

a pitcher pitching well is what is supposed to happen more often than not when you’re a team that has designs on the world series.

so, no, nothing changes if the mets win 1 game.

    • chew13 says:

Dude have you seen Pelfrey. This guy is bordering more on bust lately than anything. He’s not going to pitch well. In every start he’s had he’s only pitched well like once.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

no bc that would be just dumb luck if one of the worst starting pitchers in the league for most of the year last year beats the best offense in the league. id be happy but it wouldnt change the overall feeling of this team.

  400. ravi3 says:

Wright strikes out on a check swing – 1 out

Beltran hits a double down the 3rd base line – 1 out

Delgado grounds to 2nd. Beltran to 3rd – 2 out

Clark, with a nice AB, works out a walk. Beltran on 3rd – 2 out

Church grounds out to 2nd – 3 out

  401. maure19 says:

    big hit there church

i think we are getting swept

  402. nyjfanjmk says:

Would it not have made more sense to have Billy pitch the 8th against the 3 4 and 5 instead of possibly now against the bottom of their lineup? Come on Willie you’re smarter than this.

  403. napes22 says:

Wait, did someone say Feliciano is hurt?

  404. Jayperez says:

game over……..this team is already defeated and im sure they have the looks on their face to match. I dont even need to see the game for that.

  405. mets swept? not if the “big pelf” has anything to say about it

  406. therealsince86 says:

And that my friends (welll some of you) is why we are not winning. We can’t buy a hit with RISP. It plagued us all during the slump last year and has been a problem already this season. It’s not Willie, although the pen sucks its not them or the SP its the fact we can’t get the big hit.

    • huge_mets_fan11 says:

Totally agree, the last two (and maybe three) loses, the teams have added on to their lead in close games. Can we please do that just once?

  407. atrain311 says:

I may be over reacting, but I feel as if this is a dark period for us. The ghosts won’t go away if we don’t beat the snot out of Philly. Especially if they beat us the exact way they did last year! I’m sorry, I’m at work mourning.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

There is a reason you are in mourning. This makes 10 straight losses to Philly!

  408. Bobby Bones in SC says:

    Mets pen 2 and 2/3 = 4 walks, 5 hits, 5 RUNS

Phils pen 2 innings = 1 walk, 3 hits, NO RUNS

    Whose pen sucks?
    Hmmm

  409. napes22 says:

Did we have any righties left on the bench there? If we did, then they should have been batting. If not, then what can you do.

  410. mets31488 says:

If Pelf can show a little confidence and command tomorrow, he should be fine.

    • MDMetfan says:

      Now that’s funny!

      • Bobby Bones in SC says:

That is funny. I’m a supporter of Big Pelf, but command and confidence are not two words I would use to describe him.

      • mets31488 says:

Really? I thought so too. We might as well look to sign a Claudio Vargas or Robinson Tejada because we are not gonna get anything from Pelf or Duque this year.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

and if i win the lottery tomorrow ill be rich. lets not hold our breath.

  411. MDMetfan says:

It’s nice that the Mets are committed to playing the same level of ball in their last year at Shea as they did in their first year at Shea. It closes the circle.

  412. njmatt says:

Where is Wagner? Ok, I’ve been so patient with Willie the last two years…but if this game gets further out of reach. I’ll be ready to stop being such a Willie apologist which I have been.

Seriously, it seems like this team is occupied by Wright, Santana, Endy, and a bunch of guys who need SERIOUS gut checks.

  413. thenextgreat1 says:

brian schneider way to have 2 past balls in a game.

    • MDMetfan says:

Isn’t he a great defensive upgrade? Just awesome….. No we have a catcher who can’t hit or catch…LoDuca must be laughing his ass off.

  414. gomets6091 says:

I can’t wait for this series to be over. At least I have tickets to Saturdays game against the Brewers, which hopefully will be a Santana start.

  415. mets31488 says:

I still cant get over the fact that we only managed 2 runs off of Moyer. Just sad.

    • njmatt says:

They hit a lot of balls hard of Moyer that just died or were hit right at guys. So it wasn’t like Moyer was toying with them and fooling them.

But you just had that feeling not scoring more runs would come back to haunt us.

  416. ravi3 says:

    Muniz on to pitch

Feliz grounds out to Wright – 1 out

Ruiz flies out to left – 2 out

Taguchi flies out to right – 3 out

Coulda used Muniz a few innings ago.

    • napes22 says:

Instead we brought no show out for his 4th inning in 6 games and sosa for his 5th inning in 6 games.

  417. njmatt says:

PS: Don’t get excited about Rollins

I feel like there is no chance he won’t play tomorrow night.

  418. maure19 says:

i can’t believe how quiet shea is right now

i wonder what matt’s post game comments are going to be after this horrible loss? he’s been towing the company line for the past year.

if willie says “we’ll get ‘em tomorrow”, i’ll puke

  419. gem779 says:

Lidge not ready to go consecutive days i guess

  420. Nightlife says:

Okay, since I’m more of a “stats guy”, I’m in the process of coming up with a way to quantify this “heart” I hear so much of in number form. Its very rudimentary at the momment. I’ll try for this inning.

David Wright check swing strike out: -4.0 hearts (normally -5 hearts, because only guys with no heart strike out looking, but its DWright so the equation factored that in).

Beltran double: +3 hears (normally a 2b would be more hearts but since its Beltran you have to subtract 2 hearts to make up for the fact that he actually has a robotic one. A Jimmy Rollins double counts as 25.0 hearts).

Delgado: -4..0 hearts (weird thing with this one, moving a runner over usually is a +1.0 heart, but since this was in a so called “clutch situation” where heart is crucial, I had to subtract 4.)

Clark: walk +2.0 hearts (walks usually don’t have much heart in them, clogging up the bases and all, but he is a gritty bench player, so I added that into the equation.)

Church: ground out -100 hearts (he failed at the situation that requires the most heart of all, in the clutch . The only situation where you could have less heart is striking out looking in the bottom of the 9th down by 3 with the bases loaded)

So that half inning we had a heart rating of -97. NO HEART AT ALL!

More kinks to be worked out.

    • napes22 says:

You should patent that and create a heart computer program. Could replace VORP some day.

      • Nightlife says:

I’m trying, but its hard. For instance, an Eckstein hit in a clutch situation nearly broke my computer (the number might take longer than pi to figure out.)

    • JoeDoggs says:

I love it you should send it to the Elias Spoprts Buruea

  421. skyking26 says:

One wonders what Daddy and Baby Boy Wilpon must be thinking right now?–Omar’s spent a quarter of a billion dollars
in salary in the last year plus and THIS is what they/we get??
Omar should be running a bodega in east elmhurst.

    • Bobby Bones in SC says:

I laughed so hard on this one I almost lost it!

    • gipper913 says:

And, Omar talked them out of doing what they wanted (ought?) to do after the collapse – fire Willie.

    • paumanok says:

No doubt he’d run that bodega into the ground, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that, you sir, are a racist bastard.

  422. jpcw1999 says:

Double digit drop in the “overall confidence meter” for me. This series has sweep written all over it. I hope Johan is O.K. with pitching complete games from here on out.

  423. METSJW says:

This season is over. Say goodnight.

  424. metchamp78 says:

Is it possible that home grown talent, like Milledge and Gomez, would show a little more fire and fight?

Or maybe this team should have embraced Lastings Milledge’e energy and excitement instead of trading it away. These guys are like old, comfortable rocking chairs.

    • therealsince86 says:

So you did not want Santana?

      • Jayperez says:

man its been tough to watch though. Santana has been everything we wanted but Gomez has been on a tear in Min and sorry to say milledge is doing alright

    • zen says:

no. milledge and gomez loved playing too much.

    • MDMetfan says:

I am not a swagger guy usually, but I have to say that maybe this team needs a little more attitude and a few less quiet little mice. So worried about playing baseball the “right way” whatever the F that means ,and less about actually winning a game. Is this 8 losses i na row to the %^#$@& Phillies?

      • metchamp78 says:

I wanted Santana but if we’re going to lose then lets fight until the last strike not wilt. The fact that this has continued into 2008 shows me that this team is old and lacks energy. Period

  425. marvelousmarv says:

4 BBs in 2 + innings by the relievers.

  426. therealsince86 says:

Ok, I think I am finally moving over to the dark side. Fire Willie so I don’t have to read every other comment about how bad he is. Then we can run a pole where only the williebashers get to vote to elect the new manager.
We would still be losing but at least the rest of us would get a break.
I guess not then they would just change their screen names and start insulting the new manager.

  427. mets31488 says:

Same Old 2007 Mets. No Heart, No Fight.

  428. huge_mets_fan11 says:

So now everyone thinks we will get swept, no confidence in Maine after one start?

I have confidence in Maine but he is going to have to throw a complete game shutout to win.

  431. maure19 says:

unbelievable, actually amazing how bad this team is…i don’t care that its 6 games in, its really 168 games in!!!!!!

  432. metfaninla says:

i have confidence in maine to pitch a much better game, leave the game either ahead or tied and then have the phils pull it out at the end.

  433. cyclone says:

    What an uninspired performance.

  434. thenextgreat1 says:

    reyes has just maxed out

  435. metsfan227 says:

    Isn’t Tom Gordon’s ERA something like 16.something?

I guess that is only when he pitches against good teams.

  436. jpcw1999 says:

If Maine can go the distance there’s a small chance of a win.

  437. ravi3 says:

Nice to see the fans at Shea still in it, with a Lets go Mets chant.

    Schneider k’s on 3 pitches.

Endy grounds out to the pitcher

    Reyes flies out to right.

    UGH

  438. napes22 says:

GG chumps. Our bullpen is disgusting.

  439. marvelousmarv says:

This was a statement game against the team that beat us last year. you can’t come up flat against them. Today, even in April, this was a must win. Even if they lost the next three series, this one is a MUST WIN!

  440. RPsJacket says:

9 straight losses to the phillies. is this insignificant?

    Willie Randolph is A COWARD

  444. MDMetfan says:

WOW that was incredibly bad. Phillies must be laughing at us.

  445. jpcw1999 says:

let’s vote on the confidence level now.

  446. therealsince86 says:

All I can say is that if the Mets had heart then Chavez’s hit would have made a hole in Gordon and Reyes hit would have been a home run. It’s obvious that if they would play with heart and intensity and try harder they could get a hit every time.
Just think if a guy played with heart and intensity every time he could bat like .999. Not 1.000 though because sometimes his heart would get in the way and he would feel bad for the pitcher.

  447. napes22 says:

I love how we have bases loaded with 1 out, and we manage a run on a dribbler to 2nd. We never come up big.

  448. zigner says:

willies comments sound just like sept 07!! deja vu

  449. MetsMaven says:

Mets have too many soft players who don’t give a crap about winning. And by soft, I mean Latin.

  450. keith hernandezs moustache says:

the suicide hotlines are going to be busy tonight

  451. metsfan227 says:

I have about zero confidence right now. They just don’t seem to want it. The bullpen sucks and once they give up the lead it’s like they just shut down and start thinking, “we’ll get them tomorrow,” instead of trying to come back and win today.

They can keep saying, “it’s just one game,” but I hate to break it to them, they are all one game. It is the accumulation of all of these *one games* that is the problem.

  452. zen says:

i’d trade willie and schoeneweis to the tigers for leyland.

then i’d trade the mets fans for the cardinals fans.

  453. HeadlinerG60 says:

While Rollins looks focused and intense, Reyes looks emotionless and uninterested. I wholeheartedly think Willie is the reason for this team’s inability to overcome adversity. Look at the ending of ‘06 and ‘07………he needs to go home.

  454. can_of_corn says:

How many fly balls were hit to the warning track in this game? I haven’t seen that much WTP since high school.

Let’s face it — unless Alou comes back and gives us 120 games, we’re going to struggle to finish above .500 — yeah, the bullpen had a rough day (no thanks to CD), but the guys with the bats should have hammered Moyer the way he was pitching.

  455. 2007 called, they want their team back….

  456. almar1965 says:

From a perception point-of-view, given the background story (last year’s choke, etc.) as well as making a statement against the team that pretty much served the Mets up on a dirty platter last year, they needed to win this game. Especially after bending over for the Braves this weekend.

And they had this game pretty much in their back pockets.
But once again, the overrated bullpen blew the lead after Opie threw a great game, and once can argue that Willie made a questionable move. Blowing another well-pitched game AGAIN can be demoralizing. Especially against the Phillies who are off to a bad start themselves. That’s two games in a row the Mets starters have thrown gems, only for the rest of the team to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

This act is going to get tiring very fast among Mets fans.

The newspapers will have a field day tomorrow unless they pull this out.

  457. wolverine193 says:

From this day forward I am not blaming Willie for anything. It’s ALL on Omar. He hired the manager, he put this team together, he made it old, he destroyed the bullpen, HE’S the guy to target. Willie is just a bad manager, but I don’t blame him for going to work everyday and collecting a paycheck. It’s time to put the blame firmly at the top. And let me reiterate, I’m not overreacting, this team has played like crap since May of last season.

  458. Ferraro41 says:

Everyone is blaming Randolph, and I agree he is a dope. But Omar built this team. He’s the one who chose to ignore the offense in the offseason. He’s the one who chose to ignore the bullpen in the offseason. Everyone focuses on the collapse in September, but if you look at the Mets record by month last year, even without the collapse, they were a .500 team from mid-May through end of August. Actually, under .500. They lived off their hot start the entire season.

When you all watched the games against the Braves this weekend, aside from Santana, did anyone feel like we were the better team, top to bottom? I sure didn’t.

    • wolverine193 says:

Thank you, EXACTLY. With the payroll the Mets have, they’ve faced two teams in a row with more formidable rosters, that’s on the GM.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Wright was asked who the team leader was, and he said Randolph. That speaks volumes. There’s no “there” there because Randolph thinks he’s still a veteran player. They take cues from him. He sets the tone, and he doesn’t like insubordination. Well, I don’t like this tone. It’s a busy signal, a car alarm, or maybe just a droning, buzzing hum that slowly peters out. New leader, please. Yes, I changed my mind.

    • almar1965 says:

I have no issues with pinning it on Omar when if gets to that point this season. I mean is it too far-fetched to think that Omar is a bit overrated? Not saying he is a bad GM, but maybe he is not as good as some people/fans make him out to be? We will find out this year if this is the case. But if Willie goes, then I think Omar is not far behind.

  459. mex84 says:

Um, Hi, Guys, It’s only the sixth game of the season. We will win again. I promise.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

And we will lose again, and more. Face it. We’re not that good.

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

MEX…MEX…MEX you silly fool. Mike Pelfrey is pitching tomorrow. It will be 6-0 Phillies by the 3rd. Then the Mets offense will kick in just enough to maybe even tie before the bullpen gives up 3, 4, 5 runs.

      Mets lose tomorrow 11-6.

  460. InsaneMetsFan says:

Pathetic MESS! 85 wins this season, tops.

I’m looking to SELL all my tickets for this season:

    April 15th
    May 27th
    June 13th
    Sept 9th.

Any takers? E-mail me at kevin00197800@yahoo.com

THE NEW YORK METS SUCK AND ARE HEARTLESS.

The season is over before it even started.

  461. markthemets says:

As angry as we are lets just wait and see there is plenty of baseball left and we cant expect the bullpen to be perfect. Things will turn around

    • Nightlife says:

No man, you see, your supposed to have a fire sale after the 6th game of the season.

      • Ferraro41 says:

No, but perhaps at least a mini-fire sale after Game 162? Wait…now I remember. It was all Lastings Milledge’s fault. He and that nasty rap music.

    • SadWilly says:

man you are still in denial,,, OPEN YOUR EYES DUDE,,,, THIS TEAM IS SOFT,, THE MANAGER IS WEAK AND I SICK AND TIRED OF CARING…

Last season obviously meant nothing to Willie and the Boys.

      • mex84 says:

Go root for another team or have patience. Its a long season, adjustments will be made.

    • wolverine193 says:

I wish I had your optimism, but I’m tired of waiting for the tide to turn with this team. Show me something Mets. Play a rival and kick their ass for once. After last season’s disgrace (not a strong enough word) the Mets have lost any benefit of the doubt.

      • almar1965 says:

I agree. I think the benefit of the doubt has vanished. The Mets are going to have to earn that back.

But yeah, they are playing as if this is 2007 still. No purpose, no game plan. Curious to see if Willie will play the calm, cool collected role this year or knowing his job can be on the line very quickly, if he will turn Mr. Hyde on the players.

  462. coolio83 says:

I’m pretty much done, i guess this is what i get for the giants winning the super bowl, well…at least it will be a cheap summer this year

    • wolverine193 says:

Thank god for the Giants, I’ll be reminiscing about their incredible season while I’m dying a slow death with the Mets this summer.

  463. thegloaming says:

    FIRE WILLIE

    LET THE HOJO ERA BEGIN.

    FINIS.

    • tfc3rid says:

I love HoJo but they aren’t really tearing the cover off the baseball out there…

    • wolverine193 says:

No, let’s get someone who has NL manager experience, you know, like what the Mets should have done in the first place.

  464. almar1965 says:

Nice way for the Mets to give the Phillies a lift for the rest of this series.

Pelfrey may have to pitch a complete game shutout and hit 3 HRs for them to win tomorrow.

    uh yeah, okay.

  465. metchamp78 says:

It is going to be a story all year long but evidence is mounting that the met players want willie fired more than any fan does.
if you take their performance from last year to this year, the players have spoken loud and clear.

  466. molder says:

YES obviously there are still games to be played and YES we are clearly going to win games, but it IS like watching the mid-end of the Mets last year. Why did we keep anyone from our bullpen? It has always been our main problem and clearly will always be our main problem. Starters always throw great games and keep it close until Rick Peterson makes the call to the bullpen….

  467. SadWilly says:

I bet Manny Acta laughed at Schneider when he realized he got traded to the mets.. “have fun dealing with that dope”

  468. metballnut says:

look, I am sorry, But WILLIOT strikes again.
How many times must we see the Show before he is DONE!
    How about SOSA?
    How about NOT bunting.
This is the NL…you play for the tie at home Williot.
    But he cannot manage.
And for all those who want to blame Delgado, the game was 2-2 after his error.
Why wasn’t Feliciano ready? What is up with Williots decision to have Endy (the best bunter on the team) swing away down a run.
WILLIOT IS A TOTAL LOSER AND SO ARE WE MET FANS THAT ARE STUCK WITH HIS SORRY BUTT

  469. johnfromflushing says:

    relax ! it’s early … only the sixth game……

besides the mets will grow younger as the months go by……..

  470. metballnut says:

    fire williot!
    fire williot!
    fire williot!
    fire williot!
    fire williot!
    fire williot!
    fire williot!

  471. wolverine193 says:

Just go to John Schuerholtz with a suitcase full of money.

  472. SadWilly says:

    hahahahahahah bahahahahahaha

    WILLIOT,,, THATS PERFECT…

ITS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE MADE T SHIRTS ABOUT THIS

  473. pametfan311 says:

Losing to the SILLlES 9x in a ROW…It’s getting old, boring and downright disgracefull—-2-4 on April 8th is NOTHING compared to last September, but PLEASE…give us SOMETHING to hang our hat on for cryin’ out loud !!!!!!!

  474. metsfansberealistic says:

does this team have any guts?

we keep being lame against the Braves, choking, old, injured

Heilman wants out of the pen

Collazo is a million times better than Streroid Shoeinface

Does anyone have a clue? Does anybody care?

  475. The Ghost of Shea Past says:

This team has taken on the personality of its manager- a gutless coward.

  476. stone11375 says:

willie doesn’t deserve a talented team like this. we could win 100 games if we had players who actually cared. willie is just so uninspiring. jose used to be happy. look at him. hes at work now! Send willie back to the yanks, please, for the love of Mr Met. get an NL manager!

    so uninspiring….

    • wolverine193 says:

That’s the problem, they’re not that talented. Which is Omar’s fault.

      • Ferraro41 says:

They aren’t. Their rotation, when healthy, is the strength of the team. The lineup, which was pretty flaccid last season, is no better than it was on the last day of the 2007 season. Either is the bullpen. We added Santana, nicely done. Too bad there were a lot more problems than adding an ace.

The problem is, Santana was the answer to stopping the slide in September. He isn’t the answer to why this team played less than .500 ball from mid-May through end of the season, even without the collapse. Bullpen and lack of offense are those reasons, and neither were addressed.

  477. The Ghost of Shea Past says:

    Schuerholtz/Carter in ‘08!

  478. stone11375 says:

    i want isiah!!!

  479. SadWilly says:

we all sit here and express our displeasure with Willie,, maybe the organization doesn’t know that we feel like this.. Maybe its time for CHANTS AND POSTERS… Something has to be done about this.

    • gipper913 says:

You’ll never get posters into Shea that criticize Willie – and if you do, they’ll take them away fast.

However, I’d expect a wide smattering of “Fire Willie” chants by Thursday if we are on cusp of being swept.

  480. Im with everyone here ..we look lost ..not playing like a cohesive unit…Schow must go!! Sosa scares me everytime he throws a pitch now….Im not happy about our loss comong tomorrow…yes I said it ..we already lost tomorrow….I say just let the season take its course …..there is nothing any of us can do….but as far as hoping to win the division or wild card I sill believe it can happen..I say trade Pagan or Church now for a starter ..like Lowry or Cain……let Fmart play til Alou comes back ..cant be any worse since Reyes ,Wright, and Beltran arent producing…w/out them we will lose anyway.

  481. johnfromflushing says:

as bad as willie is ….. i’m sorry … this offense sucks……..

  482. deloid says:

    Bag it guys.

Trade all the “stars” for young prospects and let’s see if determination and eagerness can make something of the season or next.

    Don’t write a note saying”it’s early…be patient”

    It’s about attitude dude!

  483. MetsFanInVegas says:

What if the Mets come back and win the next two and take the series? Then what are you guys gonna say about today’s game? Nothing. 6 games is still too early. Some first and 2nd place teams: O’s, White Sox, Marlins, Royals, Rangers, Cardinals. Some last place and 4th place teams: Red Sox, Tigers, Mariners, Mets, Rockies. Do you think it’s gonna stay like that the rest of the season? I don’t think so. Give it more than 6 games.

    • SadWilly says:

yea you know what they probably will win the next two games.. but it doesn’t change a darn thing.. Willie is the problem…

    • wolverine193 says:

Yes, yes I do think it’ll be the same, because the going back to last season (even back in ‘06 against the Cards), the Mets have shown virtually no ability to step up when they need to.

    • pametfan311 says:

i agree it’s early, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that losing to the SILLIES SUCKS and listening to them on Comcast Philly Gloating and giving the Mets no chance this year drives me CRAZY !!!!!

      • MetsFanInVegas says:

It sucks and it’s definitely frusterating. Nobody has to be running away with the divison after six games though.

  484. JSC1968 says:

You guys kill me, not freaking once !!!!! do you put this on Ownership and the pitching coach.

Omar, brought you Pagan, Schneider, Church, Santana and got Santana for 3 guys who may never make it in the bigs and Gomez.

Did Vargas, Burgos and Showy work out. No! But, you can’t win them all, and why does he go after these 2nd tier guys, because ownership can’t pull the trigger on more than 1 big signing at a time. Also, they were too cheap to spend big money on draft picks, which is why the Yanks have Joba & Hughes.

The Yanks aren’t afraid to spend big & lose.

Omar can only work within the confines of his budget. So, he has to spend little and hope to get alot. When it bombs, it bombs. When it works out, it’s really good.

    • wolverine193 says:

You must have missed my posts, I put ALL the blame on Omar

    • VCarver says:

Wow, Show was one of the biggest if not the biggest contracts given to a middle reliever the previous winter. If he was a 2nd tier guy, why pay him like a first tier guy? That’s not the owners fault.

Ownership just gave out the richest contract in ML history for a starter, gave out the richest contract in ML history for a closer a few years back, and gave out the richest contract for a centerfielder when they signed Beltran.

And yet the Wilpons are cheap.

Also, this idea that the Mets don’t have a great farm system because of being cheap is baloney. No one who claims that can ever back it up with anything other than Beato, an 18th round pick.

Omar has the biggest budget in the NL. If his competitors can be more competitive with smaller budgets, then he’s the problem.

Some of you are pathetic. You just can’t bear to put any of the blame on Omar when he deserves most of it.

  485. kingkongkoo says:

I can’t handle it anymore… Willie is an absolute abomination. I know the offense is terrible and the bullpen is a joke, but it all comes back to Willie. I don’t care if this team wins the world series this year, I can’t stand watching Willie lose every god damn close game we’re in for another year.

  486. Danny1986 says:

Assesment after 1 week of 2008 Mets Baseball:

These guys just don’t have the horses.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Very true. The players aren’t that good.

      Dr. Toomany’s prescription:

Give manager until May, unless team goes on huge losing streak. Fire if under .500. Harsh, but necessary given unique circumstances of last year’s team.

Call up Andy Hernandez and bench Reyes for a game if he swings at a first pitch.

Cut Schoeneweis. I don’t care that it was Delgado’s fault. The guy can’t get righties out. Eat the salary, send the message.

Of course, none of this is anything close to a guaranteed fix. Impact will be minimal, at best, and could backfire. But, if we get to May and are still stumbling along like we have since last June, we have to do something for its own sake.

  487. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

you know who had attitude, lastings and they traded him for dreck

    • tfc3rid says:

The Mets are REALLY going to regret dealing Milledge…

I regretted not having him and Gotay today…

  488. InsaneMetsFan says:

    1969 & 1986 called, they’re embarrassed.

  489. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

give it a month, church is hitting .260 and making out after out against lefties and lastings is scorching the ball.. and gotay does a great job off the bench for the braves

the mets hate young ball players–they’d rather have old creaky veterans. willie can’t coach young ballplayer. this team is stale, tired and boring

  490. fortleemets says:

What’s the Mets’ record since last year when Castillo was put in the #2 hole?

    • SadWilly says:

I’ve noticed that to… Once Castillo came to this team it has all been downhill…

  491. kingkongkoo says:

No one cares. Why should I cheer for a team that doesn’t care if it wins or loses. Last year and the beginning of this season has been the least fun I’ve had rooting for the Mets in my life. And that’s saying something considering Art Howe and the majority of the 90s.

    FIRE WILLIE NOW

  492. Jaded1983 says:

this is just SO darn frustrating!!!!!

ugh im dreading the calls from my philly friends tonight

  493. m00kie says:

it’s the bullpen not willie, which means it’s omar. That said, lose the whole bunch of them as far as I’m concerned. And that comes from the biggest sunshiner omar/willie guy around here. I’m just sick of it at this point..for whatever reason the ball’s not bouncing our way and the vibe needs to change.

  494. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

i can’t stand castillo. i didn’t like the trade for him and i hated resigning him, especially for four years. now we are stuck with that bunt for a basehit on bad knees player

i said it many times last year and i’m saying it again, you can’t just fire willie, it’s gotta be omar and willie together. they are awful
next year in citi fields we need a professional GM and professional manager

  495. djm212210 says:

Speaking of blown bullpen saves, does anyone remember Billy Wagner giving up a three run HR to Barry Bonds two years ago in San Fransisco. Look Bonds may be a distraction but its not like that club house it distraction free right now. Bonds can produce. He can play 1 out of every 3, 2 out of every 3, ya kno.

    Reyes
    Castillo
    Wright
    Beltran
    Bonds
    Delgado
    Church
    Scheider
    Pitcher

    or against a lefty

    Reyes
    Castillo
    Wright
    Beltran
    Delgado
    Pagan
    Church
    Scneider
    Pticher

Look I know Alou is coming back but if you give Bonds a contract based off of incentives I do not not see a huge problem with signing him.

    • SadWilly says:

this team is a circus,, so why the hell not,, who cares what happens until Willie is gone

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

not sure thats the answer. but 2 more weeks of this and ill be right there with you. i just think willie lost this team, the message (if there even is one) isnt getting through.

  496. kingkongkoo says:

It is Willie… no one has a great bullpen, its Willie’s fault he doesn’t know how to manage it.

  497. Peter says:

    Willie = social promotion

Just because he was a coach for all those years he deserved to be a manager?

Can we blame Torre on principle for being a bad teacher as well?

Or . . . did he just teach him what he didn’t know???

  498. kingkongkoo says:

Anyone who thinks its too early to get angry must forget losing the division by one game last year because of all the fking games like this that we lost during the season thanks to willie/bullpen/no heart offense.

  499. SadWilly says:

Joe Torre succeeded because his players loved playing for him,,, he was an average tactical manager but his players came to play ever day for him..

and Willie tries to be like Torre,, the only problem with that is that NO ONE LIKES WILLIE AND THEY DON’T RESPECT HIM

  500. thrilledge 4 prez says:

“Omar can only work within the confines of his budget.”
    - they have the third highest payroll in the game, idiot.

“So, he has to spend little and hope to get alot.”
    - like keeping milledge and saving payroll for guys like perez and texiera in the offseason.

  501. acraane says:

I’ve been a big willie supporter and have thought much of the criticism was unfair. But just 6 games in…I’m beginning to have second thoughts. His romantic notions of ole school baseball are getting annoying. He has a whole year of substandard bullpen use to learn from ['07]. One of the takeaways was that Shoeneweis plays well away and to lefties. So what does Willie do? He brings in Shoeneweis in a spot where he has proven not to succeed.

“Testing your guys” and “seeing what they got” are great for the movies. And Delgado’s error does not absolve Shoeneweis from his poor outing.

And for pete’s sakes…can someone knock Utley off the plate?!?! Willie needs to toughen these guys up.

  502. kingkongkoo says:

Can anyone think of a team in the last decade more overrated than this piece of crap we have to watch for the next 156 games?

  503. SadWilly says:

I seriously bet other teams organizations laugh at the Mets for have Willie as there manager.

Can’t we just fire this guy…. its not like any other team will hire him.. so we can just hire him back when we need a KILLJOY as a manager
