by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets (2–4) lost to the Phillies (4–4) by the score of 5 to 2 in the final opening day at Shea Stadium this afternoon.

For a boxscore, check out the new-and-improved SNY.tv.

For a recap, read my live-blogging notes, here.

…by the way, as of now, there are 804 comments in this thread, which is unbelievable…i’ve never seen anything like that…i don’t know if i am impressed, or scared for Willie Randolph

…wowgood lord, man

4:21 pm

Jimmy Rollins is out with a sprained ankle.

4:17 pm

Carlos Beltran hit a one-out double, following by a pinch-hit walk from Brady Clarkbut, Ryan Church grounded out weakly to second base, against a lefty

Mets 2
Phillies 5
end of eighth

4:15 pm

…in the middle of the inning, Keith Hernandez let out a nice, loud yawn, which i think says it all

4:06 pm

Jimmy Rollins has been taken out of the game in favor of Eric Bruntlett, so i can only assume that something is up with rollins, who jogged home slowly in the previous inning

…forgive me if i’m not crying

4:03 pm

well, hat’s off to Shea Stadium, which just finished playing Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up, which finished first place in the team’s eighth0–inning sing-a-long content, due to heavy lobbying from Fark.com and Digg.com…this will not end up being the new song, though…for more, click here

4:00 pm

…i hate to say it, but this feels EXACTLY like a game from last September…in every way, shape and form…

…thankfully, it’s only April…

Mets 2
Phillies 5
middle of eighth

3:56 pm

Carlos Muniz is warming up in the bullpen.

Pedro Feliciano is still no place to be found…

…i can only assume there is something wrong with feliciano, who has not pitched since April 2…

…meanwhile, Chase Utley ripped a double on a meatball from Aaron Heilman, over the head of Ryan Church, to drive in Jimmy Rollins to put the Phillies up by three

3:50 pm

…in a one-run game, Aaron Heilman walks the eighth hitter to lead off the inning…unreal…So Taguchi advanced him to second…Jimmy Rollins then ripped a ground ball under the glove of Carlos Delgado to drive in the run…

delgado never had a chance, though not many first baseman would have…it was scorched…

…in the following at-bat, Brian Schneider allowed another pass ball, his second of the day – both of which he should have caught…sloppy play, letting yet another run to be in scoring position…

…this, as much as any thing, including any such managerial decision, is what loses games…mistakes…ugh…

3:44 pm

Damion Easley popped out to the warning track in right to end the inning…i thought it was gone…damn

Mets 2
Phillies 3
end of seventh

3:41 pm

well, shows what i know…endy swings, hits a ball directly at Jimmy Rollins, who cleared the bases with a double play

Jose Reyes then ripped a single up the middle…i bet they throw over to first at least seven times during Damion Easley’s at bat

3:40 pm

…for what it’s worth, i would not bunt Endy Chavez in this situation, with the tying run on first, no outs and a thin bench

3:33 pm

Jorge Sosa is in for Scott Schoeneweis to face Pat Burrell, while Endy Chavez is in for Angel Pagan

sosa got burrell to pop up, deep to left, but Jayson Werth hit a ball the other way, through the infield, with two strikes, to put the Phillies ahead…

…i hate that this is feeling like a game from last year, with all the usual suspects at play…

Mets 2
Phillies 3
middle of seventh

3:27 pm

Ryan Howard hit a potential double-play ball, as was scripted, nice job Scott Schoeneweis, but Carlos Delgado made a poor throw in to the back of Chase Utley, who stood tall for as long as he could while sliding in to second…the ball bounced off utley’s back, rolled in to the outfield, two runs scored and the game is tied

Jose Reyes is a bit at fault, as well, since he set up for the catch right in line with utley

…naturally, schoeneweis was booed while walking from the field…the thing is, while he allowed the two guys to get on, he did what he had to do by getting the ground ball…if any one should be booed, assuming you have to boo, you should boo delgado, not the pitcher

3:22 pm

Scott Schoeneweis let up a hit, then hit Chase Utley, who has been hit three times today, which is understable since his totally crowds the plate

…ground ball, scott…ground…ball…do it…come on

3:18 pm

yes, i’m concerned that Scott Schoenweiss is pitching this entire inning, including to righties…and, of course, he’s struggling, while Jorge Sosa warms up…ugh

…when do we issue missing person’s report for Pedro Feliciano

yes, i’m concerned that Scott Schoeneweis is pitching this entire inning, including to righties…and, of course, he’s struggling, while Jorge Sosa warms up…ugh

…when do we issue missing person’s report for Pedro Feliciano?…

3:10 pm

Joe Smith warmed up on the mound. However, the Phillies pinch hit for Jaime Moyer, and so the Mets pulled Smith for Scott Schoeneweis, before Smith could even throw a pitch.

3:07 pm

the Phillies played the shift on Ryan Church, who hit a grounder to short, which was fielded by the third baseman for an out…

Mets 2
Phillies 0
end of sixth

3:00 pm

Joe Smith entered in place of Perez, with the tying runs at the plate, to face the right-handed Pedro Feliz, and he walked Feliz.

However, he got Carlos Ruiz to ground out to end the inning.

…smith never hit schneider’s target the entire time, and threw an absolute spinning meatball to ruiz which he thankfully took for a strike…close call

Mets 2
Phillies 0
middle of sixth

2:57 pm

…Shea Stadium is using the organ, which played a bit of Crazy Train by Ozzy Obsourne…

…i love when rock and pop songs are covered on organ…

…i prefer silence, or organ..that’s it

2:55 pm

Oliver Perez looked great, getting the first two batters…then, in natural perez fashion, the wheels started to come off and came off quick…he had Pat Burrel down in the count, lost him, walked him, he then balked, walked another batter along with a pass ball to give first and third…and that was all, which i agree with…i love oliver, but when he goes off the tracks, he’s not coming back…

…as such, Joe Smith is in the game…

2:43 pm

David Wright hit two balls really, really hard against Jamie Moyer earlier in the game, but both were tracked down by Shane Victorinoso, in the fifth, he ripped a ball in to the right-field corner as far from shane as possible for his first hit of the day…unfortunately, the same can not be said for Carlos Beltran, who had a potential RBI double run down by, you guessed it, victorino, to end the inning…

Mets 2
Phillies 0
end of fifth

2:34 pm

…with one out and a runner on first, Oliver Perez walked the pitcher, who had been trying to bunt the runner over, bringing Jimmy Rollins to the plate who started with a 2–0 count, at which point Brian Schneider wisely walked out to the mound…

…he got it together, though, getting rollins on a fielder’s choice and Shane Victorino to pop out…

…nice…NICE rebound, ollie…and nice work, schneider as well…

Mets 2
Phillies 0
middle of fifth

2:31 pm

Luis Castillo has left the game with right knee soreness.

…how exactly does that differ from every other day of the week…

He came up a bit lame while running down a pop up in foul territory in the previous inning.

2:25 pm

Luis Castillo has been replaced by Damion Easley.

let the Ruben Gotay comments begin

2:23 pm

…bases loaded, Ryan Church up against a lefty, one out, and he hit a weak grounder to second, but it scored a run…good enough…unfortunately, they then walked Brian Schneider to bring up Oliver Perez with two outs, who first tried to bunt, while dropping his bat on home plate, and then eventually struck out…

Carlos Delgado hit a one-handed single to the opposite field…and it’s about time…go with it, losgo with it

…by the way, Angel Pagan uses the theme to Indiana Jones as his entrance music, which is music to my ears…Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie of all time…

…pagan legged out a ground ball deep in the hole at second, helped out by a double-clutch from Chase Utley

Mets 2
Phillies 0
end of fourth

2:13 pm

…in case you’re wondering, ‘Everybody clap your hands’ is back…

2:12 pm

…by the way, according to few a e-mails, MLB GameCast has referred to all of Jaime Moyer’s pitches, be it a fastball or not, as breaking ball…hilarious…

2:10 pm

Shave Victorino and Jayson Werth just knocked in to one another chasing down a fly ball hit in to the left-center gap.

…both players appear fine, and play has resumed with both still at their respective positions…

…it’s a funny replay, i’m sorry to say, because werth essentially tackles him…they run in to one another, werth wraps his arms around him and brings him down the ground as though he was trying to force a fumble…weird

2:02 pm

…again, Oliver Perez hit Chase Utley with a inside fastball…well, they say it hit him…if it did, it hit a loose thread on his jersey…nevertheless, record it as a second hit-by-pitch…i dig the game plan, which is clearly to pound him in

otherwise, opie is in command

Mets 1
Phillies 0
middle of fourth

1:50 pm

a nice 1–2–3 inning for Oliver Perez, who fell behind 3–0 to Jimmy Rollins, shook his head looking a bit dejected, but then got a strike and induced a ground ball out

Mets 1
Phillies 0
middle of third

1:45 pm

Carlos Delgado crushed a home run to left field off a 78–mph fastball*, which was received by a curtain call

Mets 1
Phillies 0
end of second

1:37 pm

…heads up play by Carlos Delgado, who scooped up a one-hopper, then tagged first base and then tagged the runner leading off, confused on whether he should run to second, for the unassisted double play…

Oliver Perez is in his groove…a nice little rhythm…

Mets 0
Phillies 0
middle of second

1:32 pm

here’s a thought, like they did in 2006, when wearing the 1986 uniforms, the Mets should wear a modern version of each style at some point this season, to honor each era

1:30 pm

i know Jaime Moyer is a decent pitcher, and i certainly respect his track record, but he is the furthest-looking thing i have ever seen to a professional athlete…he looks like he is in pain…

…of course, he allowed a walk to Luis Castillo, but that’s it…

David Wright hit a bomb to center, which clearly got knocked down by the wind, and was run down by Shave Victorino, putting to rest that this will become a hitter’s park this season

…*like SNY.tv’s Ted Berg just said to me, should moyer’s fastball really be called a fastball if it’s only 76 mph…

Mets 0
Phillies 0
end of first

1:22 pm

Oliver Perez looked a little pumped up, over-throwing a bit…

…on the plus side, thanks to Brian Schneider, he threw inside a lot…so much so, he hit Chase Utley with a slider…but, thankfully, got Ryan Howard to pop out, and Pat Burrell to strike out looking with a outside slider to strand two runners…

…interestingly, Ron Darling mentioned that the winds are swirling around the stadium more than he ever remembers, which is probably a result of Citi Field creating a wind tunnel

Mets 0
Phillies 0
middle of first

1:00 pm

Michael Almanti is singing the National Anthem.

this guy should put Official National Anthem Singer on his business card…i feel like it is all he does…every time i turn around, either he’s signing or Ronan Tynan is singing…

…i am actually convinced that tynan sleeps on a cot in Yankee Stadium, and is only allowed up for sunlight when they need him

12:55 pm

for what it’s worth, Willie Randolph got a strong ovation from the crowd, mixed with a few booshowever, Howard Johnson got the biggest cheer of any coach

Howie Rose said, “Welcome to New York, No. 57 Johan Santana,” which was followed by a long and loud cheer.

by the way, Scott Schoenweiss got booed…unreal

Naturally, David Wright got the biggest cheer of any positional player in the starting lineup.

12:50 pm

they are playing the theme to Superman while introducing the 2008 new York Mets…

12:46 pm

Howie Rose: No. 11, Jimmy Rollins.

Shea Stadium: BOOOOOOOOOOOO.

…i love itof the starting lineup, rollins clearly got the biggest boos, though Pat Burrell came fairly close

12:35 pm

The entire Shea family has taken the field, as a tribute to William A. Shea plays on the Diamondvision.

there appears to be only a few thousand fans in the stands

12:17 pm

According to Strawberry, his greatest moment at Shea Stadium was when his team won the NL East in 1986.

12:10 pm

Darryl Strawberry is in the house…he will occasionally work with SNY this season as a Mets analyst, which i am very happy about…he’ll be an on-air guest in a few minutes…

12:07 pm

Mets 3B David Wright, when asked by SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, about what he thinks of when he thinks of Opening Day:

“The fans, first and foremost. I mean, they come out in full force. 55,000 crazy, screaming New Yorkers.”

Wright, on whether he’ll miss Shea Stadium:

“I have a lot of memories on the field, probably even more in the clubhouse with the guys…But, I think, it makes the transition a little easier when you look nextdoor and you see what’s going up. But, I will be sad, there’s a lot of history in this park and a lot of memories for me personally.”

11:55 am

…i miss skipping school to watch Opening Day

11:50 am

…i’m impressed…the pockets of fans who are actually inside the stadium do not seem all that hostile towards Jimmy Rollins, who is on the field taking batting practice…some how, i doubt the same will happen when he steps to the plate to lead off the game…

…i hope he has ear plugs…

11:35 am

…the stadium is rocking with sporadic Lets Go Mets chants…

11:27 am

…in typical Shea fashion, i’m hearing that is is a nightmare driving in and finding parking…what a shock…had i been driving in from Connecticut, i bet i would still be on the bridge, getting ready to do a tour of Corona Park, before settling on a spot in the Tennis Center…oh well…by the way, it appears The Hill is no longer available, and, as reported in the off-season, the old Subway Station and Stairwell is no place to be found…it has been wiped from the earth…what a crime

Man, how did I forget this was an afternoon game?

Goodbye work productivity for the day.

HOFMets57 April 8, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Let’s Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jeff5361 April 8, 2008 at 11:34 am

That is where I always parked, on the other side of corona parked and walked it. It was usually frr but I bet today there are charging

MetsWrightNow April 8, 2008 at 11:39 am

What about under Northern Blvd? Can cars still park there?

swirlywand April 8, 2008 at 11:39 am

no seriously, I’m in tears…I so wish I were there! LET’S GO METS!!!!

zen April 8, 2008 at 11:40 am

Who would drive there with the new stadium up?

VCarver April 8, 2008 at 11:49 am

The same people who change their opinion of Willie Randolph after two games in Atlanta in April.

keith hernandezs moustache April 8, 2008 at 11:52 am

and the same people that think reyes has “lost” it

zen April 8, 2008 at 11:59 am

two best answers. ever.

murdertron3000 April 8, 2008 at 11:42 am

What’s the deal with the subway now, with the station and the stairwell gone?

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 12:03 pm

They built a new stairway out of the station… They whoe area there has been modified because of the rotunda and Citi Field Fan Walk area for next season.

CharlieH April 8, 2008 at 11:47 am

How are the tailgates, Matthew?

VCarver April 8, 2008 at 11:48 am

I’m getting weepy thinking about the last opening day there. No more subway station with the stairs either! It’s so sad.

I hope they memorialize Shea and Bill Shea at the new Citifield. With something permanent. It will be a shame if they don’t.

DjDeF April 8, 2008 at 12:09 pm

William Shea will forever be a part of the retired numbers with the ceremony today. The numbers and the Symbol or whatever it is for Shea will be moved to Citi.

DjDeF April 8, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Also I believe they are leaving Home Plate from Shea where it is and will build something around it so people can still go there which is kinda cool.

7-train April 8, 2008 at 1:07 pm

I’m sure the subway will still have stairs, bro. And smell like hot piss like all the other subway stations in the city.

Next year we’ll have a nice new stadium and build a whole bunch of new fond memories about our beautiful park where you don’t get vertigo walking down 5 miles of steeper than they should be ramps.

metfan630 April 8, 2008 at 11:56 am

LETS GO METS! LETS GO METS!!

(damn work for having meetings all afternoon)

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 12:03 pm

So sad I can’t get WFAN on the clockradio in my office,…

DjDeF April 8, 2008 at 12:10 pm

14.95 for the season on MLB.com for the game on the radio

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 12:16 pm

I have it but can’t use it at work. See my note below… Office IT told me to stop streaing because it was loadin their servers… Then sent out a nastygram to everyone that streaming is prohibited…

Montana Mets Fan April 8, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Thank God for internet radio. I still can’t believe that ESPN is not broadcasting this.

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 12:08 pm

Got in trouble with my office IT department when I listened to MLB Gameday Audio last Monday…

No more Gamecast even for me…

DjDeF April 8, 2008 at 12:11 pm

thats BS.

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 12:16 pm

You’re telling me…

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 12:50 pm

We don’t even have the option of ANY streaming broadcast of anything. I’m going to be watching the little red and green dots on “Gameday.”

Montana Mets Fan April 8, 2008 at 12:16 pm

That’s rough! I really do feel sorry for you. Some people just don’t understand!

PaulInNC April 8, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Just do like I do… leave the internet alone (scores) and just DVR the game and watch it at home. I know this can be tough for us diehards, but I’ve found that its an effective means to avoid getting blackballed by your IT department (which I am actually a part of in my company :))

jimyager April 8, 2008 at 12:09 pm

people that DONT live in the metro area have to drive, like me from Vermont. I also think that Wilie is not right for this team. He didnt get it done in 06 and failed in 07 and so far in 08 the teams has NOT proven anything at all. Willie neds to light a fire under these guys and get them going. He should shake tings up and move things around, do whatever it takes. If they dont do it this season I think he’s done and Im not confident that the games 7 loss in 06 and 07 collapse has not gotten into the teams brains.

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 12:16 pm

If this team is truggling by Memorial Day he might be gone…

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Jimyager,

Then, why not drive to an LIRR or subway station and take the train into Shea?

ksuth April 8, 2008 at 12:44 pm

i mean we are a whole 5 games into the season, we better change and shake things up now….hmm…..I’VE GOT IT!!!!

Johan gets moved to the Pen. Wagner gets released. Move Delgado to the old folks home, and have Nelson Figueroa be our ACE. That’ll teach Johan to lose a game! Oh, and Castillo should be benched for Easley.

Seriously, we’re 5 games into the season. CHILL OUT!

There are no MLB radio blackouts.

Just one big, childish, BOO to those of us stuck at work in PHILLY suffering the mlb.tv blackout. Yuck.

Let’s Go Mets!

Jersey Shore Mets April 8, 2008 at 12:51 pm

I feel you man. I tried connecting through a remote proxy server but my work computer wont allow it. Since it’s impossible to avoid the score, making DVRing impossible, I guess its time for MLB Radio and a pair of headphones.

backinbusiness April 8, 2008 at 12:58 pm

I’ve got WFAN via mlb.radio coming out of my speakers. Coworkers be damned.

Mookie 1986 April 8, 2008 at 12:56 pm

Heilman got some, and Show… well he got hammered. But you pay, so you have the right to boo whom ever you want.

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 1:12 pm

Ummm..are you new to New York?

ill April 8, 2008 at 1:14 pm

that can’t be right, only Philly fans do that. ESPN told me so.

You sure they are in Flushings?

likeitoughttabe29 April 8, 2008 at 1:02 pm

There is nothing better than a ride on the 7 Train when the mets are playing a big game. People are packed in usually chanting lets go mets. they might as well just make it a METS FAN ONLY train because anyone on it for another reason just gets annoyed and usually loses hearing.

markcore April 8, 2008 at 1:05 pm

It is hilarious to hear the crowd boo’ing the Phillies TRAINING STAFF! .. that’s just funy

QnsNative718 April 8, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Examples, every Braves game I have seen and a lot of the West coast games all come in widescreen on 1.2m feed and look fantastic for live streaming video, but every other teams games I see looks no better than the 800k feed (less clarity in the picture, no widescreen).

ScottN April 8, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Good sign for Delgado against a lefty, but his issue is with pitchers that can beat him with a fastball. 80mph fastballs is just the recipe for what ails him. Maybe it gets him on a roll, though.

gomets6091 April 8, 2008 at 1:57 pm

agreed. I’d take a .300 season with 20 homers if he also hits 35-40 doubles.

ScottN April 8, 2008 at 2:00 pm

My problem is with your 35-40 doubles. Again, that means he’s hitting the ball hard into gaps. I’m afraid he doesn’t have the batspeed anymore to do that. I don’t think we can affort Shawn Green-style production out of a key power spot.

ravi3 April 8, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Moyer hits it right back to Perez, who does a nice job fielding the ball and getting it to 1st – 1 out

Victorino jumps at the first pitch, and flies out to right.

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 2:29 pm

thats such a stupid statement, there are hitters parks outside of CBP, his road stats mean nothing unless you break it down by stadium. i dont have the time to do that but if you told me his HR/AB ratio is similar at petco, and shea, and rfk to everything else then ill believe hed be the same player.

zen April 8, 2008 at 2:40 pm

stupid is speaking before checking the facts. his hr per ab is higher at shea and petco than cbp

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 2:57 pm

no stupid is not being able to read. my first statement said he wasnt overrated and that i was curious how his stats would look if he didnt play 81 games in philly, i never made any kind of declaration that hed be worse out of philly just stated i was CURIOUS do you know what that word means. my second statement simply said that you cant just go by home and road you would have to break them all down due to the increasing amount of hitters parks popping up all over baseball. oh and actually the accurate way to determine this would be to take his hr/ab at a particular stadium vs total, not vs just his home park.

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 3:00 pm

again i dont have time to do this and maybe he comes out smelling like roses after the analysis i never said he wouldn just wondered what the exact numbers were. and for the record the “stupid comment” reference was to ill not to you zen, but you proved to be the bigger dbag of the two, so go f*** youself.

Lol Tom McCarthy: Lets see if the Phils can make Perez pay for walking Moyer. If your the Phils you have to make him pay.

I know he is announcing on a Phils netowrk but it is weird to hear him say that.

shamsky April 8, 2008 at 2:35 pm

WHEW!

CornellMetsFan April 8, 2008 at 2:35 pm

easley is a servicable 2nd basemen, but i wish we still had gotay

vitto79 April 8, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Oh for crying out loud……Castillo is going to do this all year long………and yea Gotay is gone so their is Easley and then what………….Jose Freaking Valentin looks good right now even

I think Easley is a real good player and better than Gotay overall but still it would be nice to have that option

I still think Pagan is worth keeping over Gotay when it comes down to it……..and that was the choice when Alou returns in a few

shamsky April 8, 2008 at 2:36 pm

Three runs + this inning!

keith hernandezs moustache April 8, 2008 at 2:36 pm

i am predicting a david wright homerun his next at bat

cbusmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Here’s one for you…What’s the difference between Luis Castillo and Anderson Hernandez? Give Up?

4 years and $ 22 million (I’ll assume Anderson makes 500K a year)

Seriously, what does Castillo do that Hernandez doesn’t? Stay healthy. Aside from that, he’s a slap hitting 2nd baseman. AHern is probably faster and fields better too. What a stupid signing by Omar.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Hit .300 with a .350 OBP?

Bobby Bones in SC April 8, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Agreed. Hernandez may get a chance again this year though. I sure hope he can bat .300!

cbusmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Castillo is also 33 and has chronic knee problems. He’ll be 37 and probably have 2 new knees at the end of this contract. If Omar signs him for 2 years, that’s fine. But 4? Is there no 2b depth in the farm system that he needs to sign Castillo for 4 years?

zen April 8, 2008 at 2:44 pm

how will the mets ever survive with castillo making $5.5m for the last two years of that deal? it’s pennies for them…4% of the payroll

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:44 pm

You do know we are the Mets right? If he sucks after 2 years then he can be a bench player or we can eat cash and trade him. So what? He was the best option and Omar made sure we could get him. That’s what a large market team can do. Do you remember what we paid for Jose Valentin?

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Thats not what most of you said during the winter.

reyesnwright April 8, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Castillo is a career .294 hitter with a .368 OBP and Hernanez is a career .138 hitter with a .157 OBP?
Do I win?

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Nope, I buzzed in first. :)

cbusmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 2:45 pm

That’s the past…we’re playing in the present here where is appears Castillo is no better than a slap hitter. I’d be happy if he prooves otherwise but this is not 2000, 2001, 2002, or 2003 all over again.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:47 pm

So all of a sudden a 32 year old guy is done and will not hit his career average?

reyesnwright April 8, 2008 at 2:49 pm

I’ll take his .301 average and .362 OBP from 2007 in a second. Oh, and he’s 32, not 33.

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 3:03 pm

because his kneesare 52 and his hip 72.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Yet he does not seem to miss many games, I guess he is tough too.
Again he will be fine for a least 2 years and then we can see where we are.

QnsNative718 April 8, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Um are people intentionally leaving out Marlon Anderson here?

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Does anyone know why during the Wright AB half the fans

getting a beat-down?

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 2:54 pm

One can only hope.

ravi3 April 8, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Reyes lines out to Howard – 1 out

Easley grounds out to Utley in his first AB – 2 out

Wright lines a double to LF – 2 out

Beltran hits the ball to center…Victorino hustles and makes a nice running grab – 3 out

Bobby Bones in SC April 8, 2008 at 2:45 pm

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:42 pm

He does not suck on defense.

gem779 April 8, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Victorino is a solid player and someone I would like on my team…

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:46 pm

I’ll do it…

gem779 April 8, 2008 at 2:42 pm

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Once again Omar, you are a genius for getting rid of Gotay. Who would’ve thought that Castillo’s knees might start bothering him?

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 2:46 pm

I thought it was willies fault!–how can you blame the
teflon don omar?

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:46 pm

You do realize that we have plenty of other 2nd base options?

shamsky April 8, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Remember one thing about Castillo, he’s buddies with Santana. Don’t think for one minute that Johan didn’t ask Omar what’s up with his good buddy from the Twins. I would bet that Omar got his arm twisted big time on Castillo’s contract.

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 2:46 pm

YEAH! O.K..

Jayperez April 8, 2008 at 2:48 pm

I hope not. But i do think its cause of the lack of depth we have at that position. We either have one or the other at 2b. Anderson got the defense and Gotay had the offense. Castillo i guess was a happy medium and thats why he signed him. The 4 years i think was the part he messed up with. But then again i dont think there is anyone in the farm thats coming up and can knock off castillo from his job.

zen April 8, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Less the complete meltdown. beauty! BB-balk-BB/WP.
THAT’s WHy you don’t throw crazy $$$ at this guy!!

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:55 pm

So you would not take 5 2/3 of shutout ball? Willie just did not let him have the melt down. With another base open there was still a good chance he got out of the inning with no runs.

Phillies Say The Darndest Things April 8, 2008 at 2:53 pm

we all hear all these good things about Schneider’s defense, but holy cow he drops a lot of balls. It seems like he simply drops 2 or 3 pitches an inning. what gives?

Phillies Say The Darndest Things April 8, 2008 at 2:56 pm

and he never frames pitches, he stabs at them all.

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 3:01 pm

backinbusiness April 8, 2008 at 2:53 pm

why does werth get to go to 3B on the walk?

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 2:53 pm

come on Willie, leave Ollie in there

ravi3 April 8, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Utley leads it off with a fly out to shallow center – 1 out

Howard pops out to center – 2 out

Burrell draws a full count walk

**side note – they’ve got the organ going today which is a nice touch…playing Crazy Train while the Jacket visits the mound

Perez balks by making a pick-off throw to first with Delgado off the bag…He then walks Werth on a wild pitch. Burrell to 3rd – 2 out

Willie comes out and pulls Ollie, who is also on the cusp of the 100 pitch plateau. Smith coming in.

nyjfanjmk April 8, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Great, here comes our “amazin” bullpen to hold this “huge” 2-0 lead, I’m confident…

pedro4545 April 8, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Questionable call by Willie taking Perez out already…I would have let him either finish up the inning or give up a run…Hopefully Joe Smith makes him look like a genious and shows why I will never be a manager.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 2:56 pm

I would have liked to see him finish the inning too, however we would be killing Willie if he left him in and Perez gave up a HR to Pedro Feliz.

Nightlife April 8, 2008 at 2:57 pm

I don’t know, stuff like this happened a lot last year to Perez where he was seemingly cruising then a bad defensive play (usually his own) and a walk, the next thing you know we would be down by 5 runs.

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 2:57 pm

No ?–you CAN”T let Perez pitch to Feliz!

Nightlife April 8, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Good move, Willie.

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 2:55 pm

I never feel comfortable with Joe Smith pitching and a runner on 3rd

gem779 April 8, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Willie seems to have a good amount of confidence in Joe Smith, which seems to be fine to me. I don’t know who else we would use anyways..

cbusmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Good…now this give us 3.1 innings to question Willie’s imept managerial ability. Let’s see how he falters…

cbusmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 2:57 pm

“inept” as in my spelling of the word inept was inept.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:00 pm

CornellMetsFan April 8, 2008 at 3:00 pm

alright, were out of that jam, but we cant have our starters only go 5-6 innings. when pedro comes back, you know youre not getting 7 out of him. that puts pressure on maine and ollie to go 7 innings and alleviate some of the pressure on our bullpen. the reason we imploded last year was because our bullpen was drained. willie cant be so eager to take the starters out.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:04 pm

You can with a RH hitter who hits HR or SO against a struggling Perez. Especially in the home opener. Besides the pen should be decently rested.

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Dude, stop the arguing for the sake of arguing-

murdertron3000 April 8, 2008 at 3:06 pm

I agree in principle, but this is Oliver Perez we are talking about. When the wheels come off, and they definitely seemed to be coming off, he tends to fly apart completely. I think he had to pull him out of there.

It’s games like this that make me wonder if the Mets would be better with a different manager. Willie is practically handing them this game.

dontstopbelieving April 8, 2008 at 3:22 pm

It’s utterly absurd that Feliciano is not in the game against the Phillies’ best lefty hitters. There is no excuse for this unless he is injured. And as a bonus, he can even pitch to righties, unlike SS. Close games can be won/lost by managerial decisions, and this is an awful one.

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Oh dear Lord. Why Suckyweis here? Where is Feliciano????

gomets6091 April 8, 2008 at 3:22 pm

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I don’t know but there is no way you can leave in the Show for Howard. You have got to go with Feliciano here, why else is he on the team?

In all fairness here, Schoenweis would have been out of the jam, as he got Howard to ground to Delgado. Carlos made a bbad throw, hitting Utley in the back, leading to 2 runs scoring.

The blame here has got to be on Delgado.

gomets6091 April 8, 2008 at 3:27 pm

That is the karma of the “Show”.

dontstopbelieving April 8, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Utley was definitely out of the baseline, but not enough such that the ump would call it.

nevets72 April 8, 2008 at 3:25 pm

you have to f’in kidding me!

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:26 pm

I can’t blame Willie for this however, again Show did what he was supposed to do. Get Howard out. Delgado just made a poor throw and Reyes was out of position.

rogasm April 8, 2008 at 3:27 pm

How does Willie not get this blame?

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:29 pm

For Delgado making a bad throw and Reyes being out of position? Would Pedro went out and got the double play on his own?

almar1965 April 8, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Actually one can make an argument that you can blame this on Willie. Blowenweis got himself in this situation to begin with and he should not have been there. Where was Feliciano? Is he even alive? I would rather take my chances with Feliciano vs. a righty than Blowenweis.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I would not have brought in Feliciano until Utley came up. Willie left Show in but he got the double play ball and we would have been out of the inning. So while I may have done something different I can’t fault him for a thowing error.

zen April 8, 2008 at 3:30 pm

i can’t believe willie didn’t turn the double play. he has to get the ball to reyes there

almar1965 April 8, 2008 at 3:26 pm

If they lose this series against a team that pretty much stuck the knife in as deep as it can get late last year, they may as well move to Citifield now because Shea will explode.

Nightlife April 8, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Because a series in the second week of the season is the most important series to ever be played.

almar1965 April 8, 2008 at 3:30 pm

We need Sanchez back effective in the worst way!

I know Delgado made the throwing error, but Schoeneweis loaded the bases. He SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

extrawhitemeat April 8, 2008 at 3:32 pm

The lesson here as always is that there is plenty of blame to go around to EVERYONE.. which is why it’s a Willie issue…

Toss in the same attitude brought by the same manager that sunk the ship last year.. and I dunno why anyone is surprised….

Sosa on to pitch, with Endy taking over in left

Burrell flies out to right – 2 out

Feliz pops out to shallow left – 3 out

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Again, I guess Willie should have brought in homerun Heilman instead of Sosa. What was he thinking? That major league pitchers should be able to do their job? What a joke.

what I don’t get is why does Schoenweis get to be the first lefty all the time, especially in the 7th inning when you might not need another lefty at this point? I get it if its the 5th but the 7th? It should be Feliciano. I just don’t get why Pedro hasn’t pitched in any important situations so far and Schoenweis has several times

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:38 pm

In all fairness, if Show had done his job then Feliciano would have been in there to face Utley and Howard the next inning.

sheaheykid April 8, 2008 at 3:46 pm

This is so depressing. I honestly don’t even know what else to say. I agree with the post above, we’re going to struggle for 80 wins this year. Randolph is such a poor manager its comical. Comical for the rest of the league, just painful for us, actually. How does Feliciano not pitch the 7th? How?

There are way too many bums in the bullpen.

MDMetfan April 8, 2008 at 3:48 pm

huge_mets_fan11 April 8, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I blame these struggles on the weather. That rain out killed us. We had good things going for us: 13-0 victory, Braves used 7 pitchers the night before, got Maine going. Then the rain out, Braves pitchers get rested, Maine gets an extra day of rest which he didn’t need and the team becomes flat.

Willie is terrible, he has been from day one. He’s never out managed anyone, is in way over his head as a manager in NY of a National League team.

Omar is on the hook too, i still can’t get over 4 years for Luis Castillo, who (huge surprise) got hurt and had to leave the game. He, Alou and Pedro are all card carrying members of the “past their prime” club.

What a joke. the sad thing about this team is that they’re only as good as their bullpen, which is terrible. but that’s what you get when the starting pitcher gets yanked in the 6th inning when he’s pitching a shut out— you’ll live and die with the pen.

skyking26 April 8, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Pedros understandable but Alou twice? Mota last yr?

Delgado is off to a decent start but c’mon how long is it gonna last? He’s a shadow of his old self. Pedro is already hurt. We technically don’t even have a 5th starter. Maine and Perez both won 15 games last year but you never know what you’re gonna get from them every start. And let’s face it, other than Wagner our bullpen is a joke. Then throw in the fact that both the Braves and Phillies have good teams, I just don’t see this team getting far into the postseason………………And oh yea, we have Willie Randolph as our manager.

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 3:50 pm

ok so the phillies just did what we were supposed to do last inning lead off guy on base, light hitting OF sub sacs him to 2nd, leadoff SS hits single to score him. i will never put manual in the same breath as willie its an insult to cholly.

Nightlife April 8, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Thats nice and all, but I don’t see what the big deal is about not sacrificing with Endy the last inning. A runner on first with no outs scores more times than a runner on second with 1 out, and that is a fact.

Ferraro41 April 8, 2008 at 3:50 pm

And oh by the way…Schoeneweis doesn’t have the market cornered on sucking. Heilman is right there with him. Good going Aaron. Way to keep the team in the game.

gomets6091 April 8, 2008 at 3:52 pm

that’s our future closer you’re talking about!

huge_mets_fan11 April 8, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I hope that when Utley and Howard come up Pedro comes, you have to use him here. But knowing Willie he will leave Heilman in.

Keep telling me Willie Randolph should be the manager of this “team.” Come on. Somebody tell me something witty.

Must be nice to have a guy on your team that comes through when it matters…Where is that Philly fan that is always on here? Can you tell me how that feels, please?

Jayperez April 8, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Its just tough to stay positive about this team. Its like if its not one thing its the other. Yea delgado actually looked good at the plate(from what i read) but missed a crucial play at the plate. Yea Ollie looked good for his outing, but the bullpen messed that up. Somethings got to give. I know its only one week but so far they just talk a big game….dont see any results…..KMON ITS THE LAST OPENER AT SHEA FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD SHOW SOME HEART!!!

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 3:58 pm

You hit the nail on the head.

Add in the SNY booth surmising that “Feliciano MUST be hurt” – implying that otherwise, Willie is just dumber than we all thought – which is saying something!

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Look, the problem is still the pen. I am not sure Willie can ever win when the pen can’t do their job.

CornellMetsFan April 8, 2008 at 3:51 pm

jesus f’ing christ. this team is unreal. this is the worst team to watch in any sport, not only in the US, but in the world. im sick of this same sh-t every single game. and watch, i promise you, i will bet my life, that we score runs now that the game is getting out of reach. homer heilman is trash, smith will go back to the minors, we have 4 starters who could pitch into the 7th inning if their mother’s life depended on it, a lame-duck AL manager trapped in the NL, two rivals who absolutely own us and can beat us in every way imaginable, a distraught fan base, and a ridiculous amount of pressure from last year still lingering. dont forget, when wagner gets his shot, he will blow some big saves. this team is trash. trash trash trash trash and more trash. id rather follow a team like the pirates who give me no expectations whatsoever, instead of breaking my heart every other day. can we beat the phils or braves? ever? to quote chris russo: JUST ONE TIME

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Methinks the Phillies are a better baseball team. We have a few young stars (one of whom has lost his mind, apparently) and a gaggle of broken down has beens. I was a cheerleader for the “it’s early” chorus, and it’s true, but guess what? This team continues to disappoint and deflate because . . . . (drumroll) they are not that good. Simple as that. It’s too early to call for Willie’s job, but I would be surprised if he makes it through May.

mad_mike April 8, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Heilman doing a bang up job in the 8th

piazzadabm April 8, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Let’s face facts. We’re never gonna win consistently with our bullpen…gear up for a LONG season.

Ferraro41 April 8, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Bullpen is one issue. The (im)potent offense is another. Two runs against a 45 year old guy who throws 37 MPH.

maure19 April 8, 2008 at 3:52 pm

this looks like its going to be a long year. i remember sometime around early august when the mets were playing mediocre and some of us were ripping the team there were some who called us “chicken littles”

there is NO way this team comes back in this game: they have no heart.

Luckily, we have Pelfrey tomorrow…that’ll stop the bleeding and save the bullpen.

NOT.

metsfan227 April 8, 2008 at 3:54 pm

You know, I am starting to believe Jimmy Rollins. I think the Phillies DO want it more.

The Mets are constantly playing like the don’t want to make a big deal out of any one game, there is always tomorrow, it’s a long season let’s not wear ourselves out at the beginning, etc.

It is really getting nauseating to watch this.

gomets6091 April 8, 2008 at 3:59 pm

I couldn’t agree more. I’m not giving up on the season, but they really need to have a gut check in that locker room.

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 4:07 pm

agreed. the braves and phils LOVE beating us, chipper named his freakin kid shea for crying out loud bc he owns us there. bobby cox intentionally sets up his rotation to give us smoltz every series. both teams fight like its a playoff game every time and we take the “we’ll get em tomorrow” approach. disgusting.

ScottN April 8, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Team takes on the personality of its manager, and the best way to distance themselves from last year was to have another guy leading the charge.

I hope they turn it around and win 10 in a row, or just turn this game around, which could still happen (Phils don’t exactly have a lights-out pen). But I think this team has all the talent to win, but they’re falling back into the same old traps as last year already–you can just see it.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, I want Bobby V back. Bobby V would have been defending Reyes’ dances as the kind of spunk and swagger a team needs rather than trying to cram him into some kind of stoic Yankee mold.

I really think this permeates throughout the team, and that’s the real change that needs to be made. But it’s too late, and I fear the Mets will be out of the race before they can make that change.

It just looks and feels SO clear to me. They’re pressing, and it’s just killing me.

JSC1968 April 8, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I hate Heilman, I hate the Jacket and the Wilpons needed to spend more money. Santana was not enough. We let Bradford go and Showy has shown nothing.

MDMetfan April 8, 2008 at 3:54 pm

smc April 8, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I think the Phillies are in our heads (probably the fans’ heads more so than the players.) We need a big comeback somewhere– today would be nice…

(Since Utley doubled as I wrote this, looks like today is looking unlikely. We need a blowout against these guys. How about getting 10 runs tomorrow in support of Big Pelf?)

gomets6091 April 8, 2008 at 4:06 pm

I disagree about the “probably the fans’ heads more so than the players” part. They are CLEARLY in the players heads too. Heck, even the new guys are getting into the act (Schneider 2 passed balls). The Mets just find new ways to lose to the Phillies. Of the soon to be 9 straight losses (or is it 10, I’ve lost track) to them, the Mets have gift wrapped at least 6 of them, if not more than that. It’s really pathetic. I don’t know what it’s gonna take.

And everyone who says we just need to fire Willie to bring in a new mentality: firing Bobby V. didn’t bring in a new mentality that let us finally beat the Braves, it brought us Art Howe. It wasn’t till 4 years after Bobby V. was gone that we finally started beating the Braves.

chew13 April 8, 2008 at 4:05 pm

No dude I disagree. It is a big game. Maybe not in the standings but this team beat our a$$ last year when it counted and are about about to win 9 straight against us. The we have the nerve to talk “ish” in spring training. Now you’re letting them spoil your last home opener @ shea. This was the game and series to make a statement that things are different. The truth is though, it’s not different. Our lineup is soft and our bullpen wayy overrated.

One thing I’m wondering. Was Feliciano ailing before the season started or did he get hurt sometime after that (his lone appearance was in the 13-0 win, which seems like years ago). If he was banged up, why not start him on the 15-day DL and give a spot to Rincon. I’m tired of Schoeneweis in any big spot, and letting the righties get pounded by lefty sluggers (Utley vs. Heilman, Kelly Johnson vs. Sosa). It’s costing the Mets games, and as we saw last year, every game counts.

it’s undeniably glaring, that the problems that caused “the collapse ” are still an issue today…..

and it has nothing to do with being early……

napes22 April 8, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Nope, it has to do with our weak bullpen and Willie’s inability to manage it.

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Odd, considering there was so much accountability for the collapse and the team dumped its erstwhile leader Randolph after the collapse in order to help turn the page.

Why do people constantly bash the team as a whole. They played well as a unit and should still be winning. Every aspect of this game was in our hands. Delgado’s error killed us, but what really killed us is Willlie’s inability to manage a bullpen. Swallow your pride and allow Peterson to choose the arms that protect our leads. WIllie’s clueless.

all the talk over spring training about how they were gonna come out with a chip on their shoulder this year and set the tone has been exposed as just that, talk.

whether this is because last year is still in their heads, or because they just aren’t as good of a team as either the phils or braves is tbd.

either way i am now firmly in the fire willie randolph camp. both for his blatant and horrendous inability to make any sort of decent in game managerial decisions, and for the way this team has played.

likeitoughttabe29 April 8, 2008 at 4:14 pm

What happened to Heilman’s claim that because of Citi Field the ball was now a carrying out of shea. balls have been dying all day.

MDMetfan April 8, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Thank God for the New York Football Giants. I can’t believe I actually looked forward to this all winter.

mets31488 April 8, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Brady Clark just had probably the best AB for the Mets today. That really says a lot about this team

zen April 8, 2008 at 4:14 pm

nice ab for willie there

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 4:16 pm

It’s old.

I agree that Willie doesn’t make the throws, etc., etc., but it’s a baseball truism that if a team has lost it’s way, psychologically, they shake things up by changing managers? Is it fair? No. Does it work? Usually not, but ask Jack McKeon.

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Sorry — there’s an extra question mark in there. Guess the Mets are rubbing off on me.

zen April 8, 2008 at 4:19 pm

it’s old to stop analyzing the game too along with the players. they’ve has a free ride. if delgado makes that play the mets win this game.

fire him. just make sure you hire someone who has at least been to a world series as a manager.

fire leyland too. tigers had a great team that missed the playoffs last year then started 0-7 this year. in fact, trade managers

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 4:40 pm

You can’t change players now. You can change managers. Again, unfair, but true. If anyone believes that this team has the talent to win, it’s clear that they need someone else to guide them.

Here’s another question: if the guy doesn’t strategize well and he doesn’t motivate his players, what does he bring to the team? Please, tell me.

If your answer is that the manager doesn’t really matter, or has a nonspecific, difficult to pin down effect on the team, well this isn’t charity. Why not roll the dice and change the manager? It’s low risk, at least.

zen April 8, 2008 at 4:49 pm

yes, but we can talk about the players’ performances to evalaute the game. even if willie isn’t a good manager it doesn’t have an impact on most games. maybe 3 or 4. not every game.

just bring in a manager that has done more than willie meaning he has been to or won the ws. i’m tired of reading the silliness.

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 4:59 pm

You CANNOT put a number on “manager effect,” but that does not mean that it doesn’t exist. These are human beings, having human experiences. Team psychology matters. They are trying to perform at their peak.

Yes, we can criticize players, but, believe it or not, for the Mets to right the ship, it’s far more practical to can Willie than it is to release Delgado.

No, it will be a fluke and we will bitch and moan about something. Again years of rooting for this team makes you a pessimist (spelling) and thats how it will always be.

metfaninla April 8, 2008 at 4:19 pm

a pitcher pitching well is what is supposed to happen more often than not when you’re a team that has designs on the world series.

so, no, nothing changes if the mets win 1 game.

chew13 April 8, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Dude have you seen Pelfrey. This guy is bordering more on bust lately than anything. He’s not going to pitch well. In every start he’s had he’s only pitched well like once.

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 4:22 pm

no bc that would be just dumb luck if one of the worst starting pitchers in the league for most of the year last year beats the best offense in the league. id be happy but it wouldnt change the overall feeling of this team.

ravi3 April 8, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Wright strikes out on a check swing – 1 out

Beltran hits a double down the 3rd base line – 1 out

Delgado grounds to 2nd. Beltran to 3rd – 2 out

Clark, with a nice AB, works out a walk. Beltran on 3rd – 2 out

Church grounds out to 2nd – 3 out

maure19 April 8, 2008 at 4:17 pm

big hit there church

i think we are getting swept

nyjfanjmk April 8, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Would it not have made more sense to have Billy pitch the 8th against the 3 4 and 5 instead of possibly now against the bottom of their lineup? Come on Willie you’re smarter than this.

nyjfanjmk April 8, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Nevermind it’s Muniz

napes22 April 8, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Jayperez April 8, 2008 at 4:20 pm

lmao GO PELF!!! where can i buy that shirt lol

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 4:19 pm

And that my friends (welll some of you) is why we are not winning. We can’t buy a hit with RISP. It plagued us all during the slump last year and has been a problem already this season. It’s not Willie, although the pen sucks its not them or the SP its the fact we can’t get the big hit.

huge_mets_fan11 April 8, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Totally agree, the last two (and maybe three) loses, the teams have added on to their lead in close games. Can we please do that just once?

atrain311 April 8, 2008 at 4:19 pm

I may be over reacting, but I feel as if this is a dark period for us. The ghosts won’t go away if we don’t beat the snot out of Philly. Especially if they beat us the exact way they did last year! I’m sorry, I’m at work mourning.

Bobby Bones in SC April 8, 2008 at 4:21 pm

There is a reason you are in mourning. This makes 10 straight losses to Philly!

Bobby Bones in SC April 8, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Mets pen 2 and 2/3 = 4 walks, 5 hits, 5 RUNS

Phils pen 2 innings = 1 walk, 3 hits, NO RUNS

Whose pen sucks?
Hmmm

napes22 April 8, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Did we have any righties left on the bench there? If we did, then they should have been batting. If not, then what can you do.

mets31488 April 8, 2008 at 4:20 pm

If Pelf can show a little confidence and command tomorrow, he should be fine.

MDMetfan April 8, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Now that’s funny!

Bobby Bones in SC April 8, 2008 at 4:23 pm

That is funny. I’m a supporter of Big Pelf, but command and confidence are not two words I would use to describe him.

mets31488 April 8, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Really? I thought so too. We might as well look to sign a Claudio Vargas or Robinson Tejada because we are not gonna get anything from Pelf or Duque this year.

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 4:25 pm

MDMetfan April 8, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Where is Wagner? Ok, I’ve been so patient with Willie the last two years…but if this game gets further out of reach. I’ll be ready to stop being such a Willie apologist which I have been.

I still cant get over the fact that we only managed 2 runs off of Moyer. Just sad.

njmatt April 8, 2008 at 4:24 pm

They hit a lot of balls hard of Moyer that just died or were hit right at guys. So it wasn’t like Moyer was toying with them and fooling them.

But you just had that feeling not scoring more runs would come back to haunt us.

ravi3 April 8, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Muniz on to pitch

Nightlife April 8, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Okay, since I’m more of a “stats guy”, I’m in the process of coming up with a way to quantify this “heart” I hear so much of in number form. Its very rudimentary at the momment. I’ll try for this inning.

David Wright check swing strike out: -4.0 hearts (normally -5 hearts, because only guys with no heart strike out looking, but its DWright so the equation factored that in).

Beltran double: +3 hears (normally a 2b would be more hearts but since its Beltran you have to subtract 2 hearts to make up for the fact that he actually has a robotic one. A Jimmy Rollins double counts as 25.0 hearts).

Delgado: -4..0 hearts (weird thing with this one, moving a runner over usually is a +1.0 heart, but since this was in a so called “clutch situation” where heart is crucial, I had to subtract 4.)

Clark: walk +2.0 hearts (walks usually don’t have much heart in them, clogging up the bases and all, but he is a gritty bench player, so I added that into the equation.)

Church: ground out -100 hearts (he failed at the situation that requires the most heart of all, in the clutch . The only situation where you could have less heart is striking out looking in the bottom of the 9th down by 3 with the bases loaded)

So that half inning we had a heart rating of -97. NO HEART AT ALL!

More kinks to be worked out.

napes22 April 8, 2008 at 4:25 pm

You should patent that and create a heart computer program. Could replace VORP some day.

Nightlife April 8, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I’m trying, but its hard. For instance, an Eckstein hit in a clutch situation nearly broke my computer (the number might take longer than pi to figure out.)

JoeDoggs April 8, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I love it you should send it to the Elias Spoprts Buruea

Omar should be running a bodega in east elmhurst.

Bobby Bones in SC April 8, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I laughed so hard on this one I almost lost it!

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 4:28 pm

And, Omar talked them out of doing what they wanted (ought?) to do after the collapse – fire Willie.

paumanok April 8, 2008 at 4:58 pm

No doubt he’d run that bodega into the ground, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that, you sir, are a racist bastard.

jpcw1999 April 8, 2008 at 4:24 pm

metchamp78 April 8, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Is it possible that home grown talent, like Milledge and Gomez, would show a little more fire and fight?

Or maybe this team should have embraced Lastings Milledge’e energy and excitement instead of trading it away. These guys are like old, comfortable rocking chairs.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 4:26 pm

So you did not want Santana?

Jayperez April 8, 2008 at 4:29 pm

MDMetfan April 8, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I am not a swagger guy usually, but I have to say that maybe this team needs a little more attitude and a few less quiet little mice. So worried about playing baseball the “right way” whatever the F that means ,and less about actually winning a game. Is this 8 losses i na row to the %^#$@& Phillies?

metchamp78 April 8, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I wanted Santana but if we’re going to lose then lets fight until the last strike not wilt. The fact that this has continued into 2008 shows me that this team is old and lacks energy. Period

4 BBs in 2 + innings by the relievers.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Ok, I think I am finally moving over to the dark side. Fire Willie so I don’t have to read every other comment about how bad he is. Then we can run a pole where only the williebashers get to vote to elect the new manager.
We would still be losing but at least the rest of us would get a break.
I guess not then they would just change their screen names and start insulting the new manager.

therealsince86 April 8, 2008 at 4:33 pm

All I can say is that if the Mets had heart then Chavez’s hit would have made a hole in Gordon and Reyes hit would have been a home run. It’s obvious that if they would play with heart and intensity and try harder they could get a hit every time.
Just think if a guy played with heart and intensity every time he could bat like .999. Not 1.000 though because sometimes his heart would get in the way and he would feel bad for the pitcher.

They can keep saying, “it’s just one game,” but I hate to break it to them, they are all one game. It is the accumulation of all of these *one games* that is the problem.

HeadlinerG60 April 8, 2008 at 4:43 pm

While Rollins looks focused and intense, Reyes looks emotionless and uninterested. I wholeheartedly think Willie is the reason for this team’s inability to overcome adversity. Look at the ending of ‘06 and ‘07………he needs to go home.

can_of_corn April 8, 2008 at 4:43 pm

How many fly balls were hit to the warning track in this game? I haven’t seen that much WTP since high school.

Let’s face it — unless Alou comes back and gives us 120 games, we’re going to struggle to finish above .500 — yeah, the bullpen had a rough day (no thanks to CD), but the guys with the bats should have hammered Moyer the way he was pitching.

Godofallwebers April 8, 2008 at 4:43 pm

2007 called, they want their team back….

almar1965 April 8, 2008 at 4:44 pm

From a perception point-of-view, given the background story (last year’s choke, etc.) as well as making a statement against the team that pretty much served the Mets up on a dirty platter last year, they needed to win this game. Especially after bending over for the Braves this weekend.

And they had this game pretty much in their back pockets.
But once again, the overrated bullpen blew the lead after Opie threw a great game, and once can argue that Willie made a questionable move. Blowing another well-pitched game AGAIN can be demoralizing. Especially against the Phillies who are off to a bad start themselves. That’s two games in a row the Mets starters have thrown gems, only for the rest of the team to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

This act is going to get tiring very fast among Mets fans.

The newspapers will have a field day tomorrow unless they pull this out.

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 4:45 pm

From this day forward I am not blaming Willie for anything. It’s ALL on Omar. He hired the manager, he put this team together, he made it old, he destroyed the bullpen, HE’S the guy to target. Willie is just a bad manager, but I don’t blame him for going to work everyday and collecting a paycheck. It’s time to put the blame firmly at the top. And let me reiterate, I’m not overreacting, this team has played like crap since May of last season.

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Y’know, I have always killed Willie and been an Omar booster – but there is some real validity to your argument.

Ferraro41 April 8, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Everyone is blaming Randolph, and I agree he is a dope. But Omar built this team. He’s the one who chose to ignore the offense in the offseason. He’s the one who chose to ignore the bullpen in the offseason. Everyone focuses on the collapse in September, but if you look at the Mets record by month last year, even without the collapse, they were a .500 team from mid-May through end of August. Actually, under .500. They lived off their hot start the entire season.

When you all watched the games against the Braves this weekend, aside from Santana, did anyone feel like we were the better team, top to bottom? I sure didn’t.

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Thank you, EXACTLY. With the payroll the Mets have, they’ve faced two teams in a row with more formidable rosters, that’s on the GM.

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Wright was asked who the team leader was, and he said Randolph. That speaks volumes. There’s no “there” there because Randolph thinks he’s still a veteran player. They take cues from him. He sets the tone, and he doesn’t like insubordination. Well, I don’t like this tone. It’s a busy signal, a car alarm, or maybe just a droning, buzzing hum that slowly peters out. New leader, please. Yes, I changed my mind.

almar1965 April 8, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I have no issues with pinning it on Omar when if gets to that point this season. I mean is it too far-fetched to think that Omar is a bit overrated? Not saying he is a bad GM, but maybe he is not as good as some people/fans make him out to be? We will find out this year if this is the case. But if Willie goes, then I think Omar is not far behind.

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 4:55 pm

To my mind you can’t fire Willie without Omar. It’s a packaged deal.

I wish I had your optimism, but I’m tired of waiting for the tide to turn with this team. Show me something Mets. Play a rival and kick their ass for once. After last season’s disgrace (not a strong enough word) the Mets have lost any benefit of the doubt.

almar1965 April 8, 2008 at 4:57 pm

I agree. I think the benefit of the doubt has vanished. The Mets are going to have to earn that back.

But yeah, they are playing as if this is 2007 still. No purpose, no game plan. Curious to see if Willie will play the calm, cool collected role this year or knowing his job can be on the line very quickly, if he will turn Mr. Hyde on the players.

coolio83 April 8, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I’m pretty much done, i guess this is what i get for the giants winning the super bowl, well…at least it will be a cheap summer this year

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Thank god for the Giants, I’ll be reminiscing about their incredible season while I’m dying a slow death with the Mets this summer.

thegloaming April 8, 2008 at 4:52 pm

FIRE WILLIE

LET THE HOJO ERA BEGIN.

FINIS.

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 4:55 pm

I love HoJo but they aren’t really tearing the cover off the baseball out there…

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 4:57 pm

No, let’s get someone who has NL manager experience, you know, like what the Mets should have done in the first place.

almar1965 April 8, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Nice way for the Mets to give the Phillies a lift for the rest of this series.

Pelfrey may have to pitch a complete game shutout and hit 3 HRs for them to win tomorrow.

uh yeah, okay.

metchamp78 April 8, 2008 at 4:54 pm

It is going to be a story all year long but evidence is mounting that the met players want willie fired more than any fan does.
if you take their performance from last year to this year, the players have spoken loud and clear.

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 4:55 pm

I totally agree… He lost that team..

HeadlinerG60 April 8, 2008 at 4:58 pm

THAT is something I agree with. Look at Reyes. He obviously doesn’t want to be out there.

molder April 8, 2008 at 4:55 pm

YES obviously there are still games to be played and YES we are clearly going to win games, but it IS like watching the mid-end of the Mets last year. Why did we keep anyone from our bullpen? It has always been our main problem and clearly will always be our main problem. Starters always throw great games and keep it close until Rick Peterson makes the call to the bullpen….

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 4:56 pm

I bet Manny Acta laughed at Schneider when he realized he got traded to the mets.. “have fun dealing with that dope”

metballnut April 8, 2008 at 4:56 pm

look, I am sorry, But WILLIOT strikes again.
How many times must we see the Show before he is DONE!
How about SOSA?
How about NOT bunting.
This is the NL…you play for the tie at home Williot.
But he cannot manage.
And for all those who want to blame Delgado, the game was 2-2 after his error.
Why wasn’t Feliciano ready? What is up with Williots decision to have Endy (the best bunter on the team) swing away down a run.
WILLIOT IS A TOTAL LOSER AND SO ARE WE MET FANS THAT ARE STUCK WITH HIS SORRY BUTT

johnfromflushing April 8, 2008 at 4:58 pm

relax ! it’s early … only the sixth game……

besides the mets will grow younger as the months go by……..

metballnut April 8, 2008 at 4:58 pm

fire williot!
fire williot!
fire williot!
fire williot!
fire williot!
fire williot!
fire williot!

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Just go to John Schuerholtz with a suitcase full of money.

Ferraro41 April 8, 2008 at 5:02 pm

That’s the best idea I’ve heard yet.

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 5:20 pm

that actually is a brilliant idea but is so far from realistic.

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 4:59 pm

hahahahahahah bahahahahahaha

WILLIOT,,, THATS PERFECT…

ITS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE MADE T SHIRTS ABOUT THIS

pametfan311 April 8, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Losing to the SILLlES 9x in a ROW…It’s getting old, boring and downright disgracefull—-2-4 on April 8th is NOTHING compared to last September, but PLEASE…give us SOMETHING to hang our hat on for cryin’ out loud !!!!!!!

metsfansberealistic April 8, 2008 at 5:00 pm

does this team have any guts?

we keep being lame against the Braves, choking, old, injured

Heilman wants out of the pen

Collazo is a million times better than Streroid Shoeinface

Does anyone have a clue? Does anybody care?

The Ghost of Shea Past April 8, 2008 at 5:03 pm

This team has taken on the personality of its manager- a gutless coward.

stone11375 April 8, 2008 at 5:04 pm

willie doesn’t deserve a talented team like this. we could win 100 games if we had players who actually cared. willie is just so uninspiring. jose used to be happy. look at him. hes at work now! Send willie back to the yanks, please, for the love of Mr Met. get an NL manager!

so uninspiring….

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 5:06 pm

That’s the problem, they’re not that talented. Which is Omar’s fault.

Ferraro41 April 8, 2008 at 5:16 pm

They aren’t. Their rotation, when healthy, is the strength of the team. The lineup, which was pretty flaccid last season, is no better than it was on the last day of the 2007 season. Either is the bullpen. We added Santana, nicely done. Too bad there were a lot more problems than adding an ace.

The problem is, Santana was the answer to stopping the slide in September. He isn’t the answer to why this team played less than .500 ball from mid-May through end of the season, even without the collapse. Bullpen and lack of offense are those reasons, and neither were addressed.

The Ghost of Shea Past April 8, 2008 at 5:05 pm

Schuerholtz/Carter in ‘08!

zen April 8, 2008 at 5:06 pm

can a manager take a curtain call?

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Zen, you and I are often going at each other. But, I must say, that was brilliant.

stone11375 April 8, 2008 at 5:06 pm

i want isiah!!!

stone11375 April 8, 2008 at 5:08 pm

at least the knicks bunt

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 5:07 pm

we all sit here and express our displeasure with Willie,, maybe the organization doesn’t know that we feel like this.. Maybe its time for CHANTS AND POSTERS… Something has to be done about this.

gipper913 April 8, 2008 at 5:12 pm

You’ll never get posters into Shea that criticize Willie – and if you do, they’ll take them away fast.

However, I’d expect a wide smattering of “Fire Willie” chants by Thursday if we are on cusp of being swept.

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Yeah, that’s worked GREAT for the Knicks

JohanMartinez April 8, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Im with everyone here ..we look lost ..not playing like a cohesive unit…Schow must go!! Sosa scares me everytime he throws a pitch now….Im not happy about our loss comong tomorrow…yes I said it ..we already lost tomorrow….I say just let the season take its course …..there is nothing any of us can do….but as far as hoping to win the division or wild card I sill believe it can happen..I say trade Pagan or Church now for a starter ..like Lowry or Cain……let Fmart play til Alou comes back ..cant be any worse since Reyes ,Wright, and Beltran arent producing…w/out them we will lose anyway.

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Willie doesn’t play young players because their attitudes might bother the other team.

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 5:15 pm

not only that but he will get you traded as well. thanks will

johnfromflushing April 8, 2008 at 5:08 pm

as bad as willie is ….. i’m sorry … this offense sucks……..

deloid April 8, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Bag it guys.

Trade all the “stars” for young prospects and let’s see if determination and eagerness can make something of the season or next.

Don’t write a note saying”it’s early…be patient”

It’s about attitude dude!

InsaneMetsFan April 8, 2008 at 5:12 pm

Now you talkin! Trade Delgado and Wagner for prospects!!!

MetsFanInVegas April 8, 2008 at 5:09 pm

What if the Mets come back and win the next two and take the series? Then what are you guys gonna say about today’s game? Nothing. 6 games is still too early. Some first and 2nd place teams: O’s, White Sox, Marlins, Royals, Rangers, Cardinals. Some last place and 4th place teams: Red Sox, Tigers, Mariners, Mets, Rockies. Do you think it’s gonna stay like that the rest of the season? I don’t think so. Give it more than 6 games.

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 5:11 pm

yea you know what they probably will win the next two games.. but it doesn’t change a darn thing.. Willie is the problem…

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Yes, yes I do think it’ll be the same, because the going back to last season (even back in ‘06 against the Cards), the Mets have shown virtually no ability to step up when they need to.

pametfan311 April 8, 2008 at 5:13 pm

i agree it’s early, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that losing to the SILLIES SUCKS and listening to them on Comcast Philly Gloating and giving the Mets no chance this year drives me CRAZY !!!!!

MetsFanInVegas April 8, 2008 at 5:18 pm

It sucks and it’s definitely frusterating. Nobody has to be running away with the divison after six games though.

JSC1968 April 8, 2008 at 5:11 pm

You guys kill me, not freaking once !!!!! do you put this on Ownership and the pitching coach.

Omar, brought you Pagan, Schneider, Church, Santana and got Santana for 3 guys who may never make it in the bigs and Gomez.

Did Vargas, Burgos and Showy work out. No! But, you can’t win them all, and why does he go after these 2nd tier guys, because ownership can’t pull the trigger on more than 1 big signing at a time. Also, they were too cheap to spend big money on draft picks, which is why the Yanks have Joba & Hughes.

The Yanks aren’t afraid to spend big & lose.

Omar can only work within the confines of his budget. So, he has to spend little and hope to get alot. When it bombs, it bombs. When it works out, it’s really good.

wolverine193 April 8, 2008 at 5:12 pm

You must have missed my posts, I put ALL the blame on Omar

VCarver April 8, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Wow, Show was one of the biggest if not the biggest contracts given to a middle reliever the previous winter. If he was a 2nd tier guy, why pay him like a first tier guy? That’s not the owners fault.

Ownership just gave out the richest contract in ML history for a starter, gave out the richest contract in ML history for a closer a few years back, and gave out the richest contract for a centerfielder when they signed Beltran.

And yet the Wilpons are cheap.

Also, this idea that the Mets don’t have a great farm system because of being cheap is baloney. No one who claims that can ever back it up with anything other than Beato, an 18th round pick.

Omar has the biggest budget in the NL. If his competitors can be more competitive with smaller budgets, then he’s the problem.

Some of you are pathetic. You just can’t bear to put any of the blame on Omar when he deserves most of it.

kingkongkoo April 8, 2008 at 5:11 pm

I can’t handle it anymore… Willie is an absolute abomination. I know the offense is terrible and the bullpen is a joke, but it all comes back to Willie. I don’t care if this team wins the world series this year, I can’t stand watching Willie lose every god damn close game we’re in for another year.

Danny1986 April 8, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Assesment after 1 week of 2008 Mets Baseball:

These guys just don’t have the horses.

toomanyuniforms April 8, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Very true. The players aren’t that good.

Dr. Toomany’s prescription:

Give manager until May, unless team goes on huge losing streak. Fire if under .500. Harsh, but necessary given unique circumstances of last year’s team.

Call up Andy Hernandez and bench Reyes for a game if he swings at a first pitch.

Cut Schoeneweis. I don’t care that it was Delgado’s fault. The guy can’t get righties out. Eat the salary, send the message.

Of course, none of this is anything close to a guaranteed fix. Impact will be minimal, at best, and could backfire. But, if we get to May and are still stumbling along like we have since last June, we have to do something for its own sake.

longtimesufferingmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 5:13 pm

you know who had attitude, lastings and they traded him for dreck

tfc3rid April 8, 2008 at 5:19 pm

The Mets are REALLY going to regret dealing Milledge…

I regretted not having him and Gotay today…

InsaneMetsFan April 8, 2008 at 5:14 pm

1969 & 1986 called, they’re embarrassed.

longtimesufferingmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 5:15 pm

give it a month, church is hitting .260 and making out after out against lefties and lastings is scorching the ball.. and gotay does a great job off the bench for the braves

the mets hate young ball players–they’d rather have old creaky veterans. willie can’t coach young ballplayer. this team is stale, tired and boring

fortleemets April 8, 2008 at 5:16 pm

What’s the Mets’ record since last year when Castillo was put in the #2 hole?

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 5:19 pm

I’ve noticed that to… Once Castillo came to this team it has all been downhill…

kingkongkoo April 8, 2008 at 5:18 pm

No one cares. Why should I cheer for a team that doesn’t care if it wins or loses. Last year and the beginning of this season has been the least fun I’ve had rooting for the Mets in my life. And that’s saying something considering Art Howe and the majority of the 90s.

FIRE WILLIE NOW

Jaded1983 April 8, 2008 at 5:18 pm

this is just SO darn frustrating!!!!!

ugh im dreading the calls from my philly friends tonight

m00kie April 8, 2008 at 5:19 pm

it’s the bullpen not willie, which means it’s omar. That said, lose the whole bunch of them as far as I’m concerned. And that comes from the biggest sunshiner omar/willie guy around here. I’m just sick of it at this point..for whatever reason the ball’s not bouncing our way and the vibe needs to change.

longtimesufferingmetsfan April 8, 2008 at 5:19 pm

i can’t stand castillo. i didn’t like the trade for him and i hated resigning him, especially for four years. now we are stuck with that bunt for a basehit on bad knees player

i said it many times last year and i’m saying it again, you can’t just fire willie, it’s gotta be omar and willie together. they are awful
next year in citi fields we need a professional GM and professional manager

djm212210 April 8, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Speaking of blown bullpen saves, does anyone remember Billy Wagner giving up a three run HR to Barry Bonds two years ago in San Fransisco. Look Bonds may be a distraction but its not like that club house it distraction free right now. Bonds can produce. He can play 1 out of every 3, 2 out of every 3, ya kno.

Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Bonds
Delgado
Church
Scheider
Pitcher

or against a lefty

Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Delgado
Pagan
Church
Scneider
Pticher

Look I know Alou is coming back but if you give Bonds a contract based off of incentives I do not not see a huge problem with signing him.

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 5:22 pm

this team is a circus,, so why the hell not,, who cares what happens until Willie is gone

Hit The Weights Zeile April 8, 2008 at 5:27 pm

not sure thats the answer. but 2 more weeks of this and ill be right there with you. i just think willie lost this team, the message (if there even is one) isnt getting through.

kingkongkoo April 8, 2008 at 5:21 pm

It is Willie… no one has a great bullpen, its Willie’s fault he doesn’t know how to manage it.

Peter April 8, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Willie = social promotion

Just because he was a coach for all those years he deserved to be a manager?

Can we blame Torre on principle for being a bad teacher as well?

Or . . . did he just teach him what he didn’t know???

kingkongkoo April 8, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Anyone who thinks its too early to get angry must forget losing the division by one game last year because of all the fking games like this that we lost during the season thanks to willie/bullpen/no heart offense.

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Joe Torre succeeded because his players loved playing for him,,, he was an average tactical manager but his players came to play ever day for him..

and Willie tries to be like Torre,, the only problem with that is that NO ONE LIKES WILLIE AND THEY DON’T RESPECT HIM

thrilledge 4 prez April 8, 2008 at 5:25 pm

“Omar can only work within the confines of his budget.”
- they have the third highest payroll in the game, idiot.

“So, he has to spend little and hope to get alot.”
- like keeping milledge and saving payroll for guys like perez and texiera in the offseason.

acraane April 8, 2008 at 5:26 pm

I’ve been a big willie supporter and have thought much of the criticism was unfair. But just 6 games in…I’m beginning to have second thoughts. His romantic notions of ole school baseball are getting annoying. He has a whole year of substandard bullpen use to learn from ['07]. One of the takeaways was that Shoeneweis plays well away and to lefties. So what does Willie do? He brings in Shoeneweis in a spot where he has proven not to succeed.

“Testing your guys” and “seeing what they got” are great for the movies. And Delgado’s error does not absolve Shoeneweis from his poor outing.

And for pete’s sakes…can someone knock Utley off the plate?!?! Willie needs to toughen these guys up.

kingkongkoo April 8, 2008 at 5:26 pm

Can anyone think of a team in the last decade more overrated than this piece of crap we have to watch for the next 156 games?

SadWilly April 8, 2008 at 5:28 pm

I seriously bet other teams organizations laugh at the Mets for have Willie as there manager.

Can’t we just fire this guy…. its not like any other team will hire him.. so we can just hire him back when we need a KILLJOY as a manager
