Buzz: Mets close to Vargas, Johnson DFA’d
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 9, 2008 6:17 pm

According to Ken Rosenthal at FOXSports.com, the Mets are close to signing free-agent RHP Claudio Vargas.

The New York Post writes that a deal could be done as soon as tomorrow, while citing the player’s agent.

Last season, Vargas went 11-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 29 games for the Brewers, who released him during spring training.

…now that el duque is in a boot, and sidelined for at least two more weeks, though likely more, and with Pedro Martinez out with a hamstring injury, signing vargas is a no brainer

The A’s have designated 1B-OF Dan Johnson for assignment, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The A’s have 10 days to either trade him or put him on waivers.

In 318 games, spanning four seasons for the A’s, while playing first base and right field, the left-handed hitting, 28–year-old Johnson is batting .249 with 42 HR and 157 RBI.

…if only johnson was a right-handed hitter…the thing is, johnson hits lefties and righties more or less the same…the problem is that, so far in his career, he has hit neither well and with any consistencybut he plays outfield and first, which is nice

Is Vargas looking for a minor league contract or major league contract, either way if he pitches for the Mets, when/if Pedro comes back, this would automatically bump Pelfrey from the rotation, wouldn’t it?

    • metzelaar says:

I wouldn’t say automatically. Basically we sign Vargas, let him and Pelfrey fill in the 4 and 5 spots for a month, and when Pedro gets, back send whoever did worse down to the minors.

Boy is it sad how ravaged our rotation is at this point in the season.

Rosenthal’s article says its a minor league deal.

.249 with 10 HRs out of the 1B position? I’d take that upgrade.

    Good job, Omar!

If Johnson were a righty, I’d say go for it. No need to make a trade, if we can claim off waivers without giving anything up, then do it.

I have seen Dan Johnson play quite a few games over the past few years. (I always end up with an Oakland player for Fantasy Baseball) He is not a bad player at all, works the count, plays good defense, and did show a lot of power. If he can be picked up for nothing, he would be great insurance for Delgado.

  5. Church says:

Maybe knowing he could actually lose a starting spot might spark something from Delgado, I don’t know if a contract years going to be enough.

  6. Nohitterthisyear says:

Bonilla is still on the payroll….Maybe he can pick up a bat.

  7. Nohitterthisyear says:

Technically his payments don’t start till 2011. By then he should be old enough.

  8. bigchart333 says:

the only problem with geting Dan Johnson is what happens when alou comes back? I doubt they’re sending down Pagan, u know endy, marlon, easley, and castro aren’t going anywhere? Clark will go down when alou comes back….he has no spot on this roster

  9. The Glider says:

Boy, not signing either Livan or Lohse now looks like a real dumb move.
