News: Orlando Hernandez, Back in the Boot
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 9, 2008 4:39 pm

Orlando Hernandez is back in a medical boot, this time with a strained tendon, and will be sidelined for two weeks – at which point he’ll be re-evaluated.

Hernandez returned to New York from St. Lucie yesterday for an MRI.

i hope he makes it back…i do…because he can be an effective pitcher…the thing is, i am no longer holding my breath…and, i’m starting to feel like the Mets should approach their pitching staff as though el duque, as well as Pedro Martinez, will not return…which is not to say they will not…and i hope the eventually do…i just think it’s safer to operate under the former…for security purposes…plus, this way, they can save money on medical tape

    wow
umm…well, not like i really counted on him
I read that Pelfrey got his car towed lookin at an apartment in Long Island City…I guess he can sign a lease now

    • mikey_FF says:

Ha … true. He should share an apt. with Freddy Garcia.

    • circelli17 says:

Meanwhile Kyle Lohse is sitting there with 12 innings of shutout baseball at the bargain baseball price of $4 mill this year. How good would he look in our rotation right about now?

  2. cmf7 says:

of course. what else did us met fans expect….

  3. MacD81 says:

Why not? Seriously, I am going to be rooting hard for Pelf tonight. The Mets need this guy to emerge this season in a big way.

  4. sheaheykid says:

El Duque injury updates are only interesing to med students

    • rM teM says:

Do I understand this right? Last season he
was bothered by a bunion. Bunions can be
taken care of with surgery, right? Could he have
hed off season surgery to repair this thing? And
if he could have, why didn’t he?

      • i mentioned this a few months ago. i was wondering too why he didn’t have surgery durng the off season. I just think he didn’t want to waste his time off….

      • krumbledkookie says:

They said it would have been a three year rehab from the surgery he needs. Why, I don’t know. My friend had a bunion removed and he was back on a mound in 6 weeks.

      • backinbusiness says:

and more importantly, why were we fans lied to and told he did?

  5. backinbusiness says:

Where can I get my Figgylicious jersey?
Hey, at least that guy talked about “crying in HD” he was so emotional about playing for the Mets.

  6. 7train says:

ITS OVER for El Duque, none of us expected him to pitch or be a significant part of this staff anyway.

    If you did, your clueless.

    Big Pelf gotta step up.

You hope Figueroa can be effective, but I’ll expect nothing from him.

  7. hbean says:

Maybe he should learn a new delivery from a wheel chair.

  8. Fregosi says:

    Bun yuns?

  9. can’t we trade him…i mean i guess no one wants him anyway since he’s injured, but is there another team out there that’s more desperate than we are who will take him????

  10. Nate W. says:

we might as save well save the Duque updates for when he isnt hurting something or trying to come back from hurting something.

I’d pretty much dismissed him from thought regarding the 2008 Mets at this point.

  11. wolverine194 says:

    You’re a warrior El Duque

  12. Wheelhouse22 says:

Cerrone – friendly suggestion, for the sanity of us fans.

NO more El Duque updates. The guy is finished. Toast. Finito. The End of the line.

He won’t be pitching ever again in a big league game. The guy is falling apart. We don’t need more udpates on his health. Time for Omar to eat the remaining contract, cut the loss…and move on.

It’s honestly rediculous now for us to pretend like hes part of thet team.

    • Slimting says:

I second this motion. Duque needs to resign himself to a retirement home.

It’s all about Big Pelf and Figgy.

  13. krumbledkookie says:

I appreciate how good El Duque has been, when healthy, for the Mets. I really do.

But can we please turn the page?

  14. Charlie says:

Okay, so, what are we looking at:

    Johan
    Maine
    Perez
    Pelfrey
    ?

    Figueroa?
    Sosa?

    GO BIG PELF!

    • wolverine194 says:

At this point, just sign Claudio Vargas. I mean really, what do the Mets have to lose at this point?

      • Wheelhouse22 says:

agreed. Actually, sign anyone in the world under 30, that can throw a ball 90 feet, and doesn’t know what DL stands for.

    • mrose says:

how bout we make a pact as a site..
Big Pelf gets a W tonight…we ALL buy a shirt..

    • backinbusiness says:

      AAA:
      Bostick, (1-0, 2 GS), 12 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 12 K, 2.25 ERA
      Armas (0-1, 2 GS), 10 IP, 14 H, 4 ER, 7 K, 3.60 ERA

      AA:
      Niese: (1-0, 2GS), 11 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 0.82 ERA

      • sincekindergarten says:

Personally, I’m high on Niese . . . but one of the guys in N’awlins will get the call-up.

        • sundaysection15 says:

yea i totally agree. i love niese but this is why they signed armas right? for when pedro and el duque went down. its early i dont think we should be panicking, lets see what armas can give us

      • Nate W. says:

Bostick has put together two nice performances, combining his ability to miss bats with a newfound ability to not miss the strikezone so much.

  15. stephenhawkingsoundmachine says:

In other news…Omar Minaya is keeping his fingers crossed that scientists can re-animate the corpse of Satchel Paige to give us some quality spot starts.

    • Wheelhouse22 says:

Post of the day right there.

Seriously, sometimes I wonder how Omar thinks. He must have been lounging behind his big desk some point today going “You know what…I think I may have signed way too many old players…this is a problem. Next year I’m going to look younger….that should definitely resolve all these injuries…hmm lets start off by signing Castillo and trading Gotay. We’re on our way!”

    • rM teM says:

ha ha ha. To quote Satchel..” How decomposed
would you be if you didn’t know how decomposed
      you were?”

  16. tfc3rid says:

This guy is a joke… Complete joke… Release him now…

With the injuries and all the bad karma, I think that this team is really and truly snake bit… I’ve never seen a baseball team have more things go wrong so quickly at one time…

    • Wheelhouse22 says:

The problem is, for a team to gain consistancy and unity you need to field (for the most part) the same team, and keep a steady rotation as well….so everyone knows their role.

This is a huge problem with the Mets. We’re always waiting for someone to return to the DL, and someone else to go onto the DL. It’s like a revolving door with all the age.

The Mets will be much better off once Omar realizes they need to be much younger, so he can keep the same guys in the lineup, and the same arms in the rotation and pen.

Right now…every day is a crapshoot, and I’m sure the team doesn’t appreciate that either.

  17. krumbledkookie says:

If Figueroa looks awful and over-matched in his start on Friday, there should be no more excuses. Get Claudio Vargas signed and suited up.

  18. Minayas_Mets says:

forget el duque – this injury will continue to linger and it doesn’t look to good for a 47 year old with a little league fastball

and whoever suggested Sosa take his place in the rotation up above needs to have there BUN YUNS checked , that guy is batting practice

    • Charlie says:

Have you looked at his starting splits from last year?

      GS:14
      W: 7
      L: 6
      IP: 80.1
      ERA: 4.59

The guy won half his starts! What more can you hope for in a fifth starter? In fact, any full-time starter that wins half his starts, wins 17 games.

Bun yuns (funniest seven letter arrangement I’ve seen today) are a flaring, but the numbers don’t lie.

  19. dave27 says:

I love the Pelfrey story. He’s driving around looking for apartments. Feliciano is in Puerto Rico. Next Delgado will be day-to-day as his son is about to take his first steps.

Does anyone on this team, besides Wright, have the ability to focus on baseball?

This team will play better than yesterday and they will win plenty of games. But they will never, as presently constructed, managed, and run, want it more than the team across the diamond. And as such they won’t go anywhere. Too many guys whose head’s are elsewhere all the time. They don’t play hard in get-away games. They don’t play hard at home. They look lethargic in day games following a night off. What does this tell everyone?

    • Wheelhouse22 says:

Tells me they are the 3rd best team in this division, but its going to take 4 months for alot of fans to realize that.

      • dave27 says:

I think they are the best team in the division, but that doesn’t matter if they can’t motivate to play like it on a regular basis.

I mean, raise your hand if you’ve been impressed with the Braves or Phillies the last 3 games?

  20. SevenTrain says:

In other news, Kotsay just became the Braves permanent fix at centerfield (from ESPN):

Braves prospect Schafer suspended 50 games for HGH use

Outfielder Jordan Schafer, a top prospect in the Atlanta Braves system, has received a 50-game suspension for use of human growth hormone in violation of the minor league drug prevention and treatment program, commissioner Bud Selig’s office announced Monday.

Schafer, 21, is playing for Mississippi in the Double-A Southern League. ESPN.com’s Keith Law recently ranked him as the 27th best prospect in the minors, and Baseball America rated him No. 25 on its list of the top 100 minor league prospects.

“We are extremely disappointed that Jordan has violated the Commissioner’s Performance Enhancing Drug Policy,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said in a prepared statement. “We are supportive of the program and will continue to educate all of our players. Earlier today Jordan asked to speak to his teammates to apologize for the mistakes he has made and for letting the organization and his team down. During his suspension, we will continue to support and counsel Jordan.”

Schafer, a third-round draft pick by Atlanta in 2005, had a breakthrough season a year ago. After hitting .240 for Class A Rome in 2006, he batted .312 in stints with Rome and Myrtle Beach of the “high” A Carolina League. He led the minor leagues with 176 hits and ranked third with 49 doubles.

Schafer is known as a superb defender, and there was some thought in the Atlanta organization that he might be ready to supplant Mark Kotsay as the Braves’ regular center fielder by the second half of this season.

His suspension for HGH use is effective immediately, according to the announcement from Major League Baseball.

Schafer’s father told ESPN.com’s Mike Fish that his son did not fail a drug test and did not purchase HGH from an online pharmacy or supplier.

“At this point he would love to comment, but under counsel’s advice he can’t,” David Schafer told ESPN.com. “He says he loves the Braves. He wants to play his entire career with the Braves. He loves the city and the fans of Atlanta. It hurts him that he can’t make a comment, but under advice he just can’t make a comment right now.”

Asked how Major League Baseball determined that Schafer used HGH, Mike Teevan, MLB’s manager of media relations, said, “We have non-analytic means of identifying players. He falls under that category.”

  21. Steve says:

Duque is DONE. Pelfrey should feel free to sign a long-term lease, if not buy a house.
How does he not get the bunion done in the offseason??? That is SO stupid.

On another topic, a team wins when it expects to win each and every day, and is genuinely mad at losing. This team is delighted to win, and disappointed to lose. Like a little league team. No fire.
No more of Willie’s “nice little” this and “nice little” that, “just finding a nice little rhythm” and BS like that. It’s not cutting it, and hasn’t for going on two years now.

This is the first time I’ve felt this way, but this Mets team needs a Wally Backman to take over and light fires.

  22. chew13 says:

@ this point can we just re-sign duque to the pen. duque for set-up man 08! soo sooo sick of heilman

  23. ihavegas says:

this hurts. eventhough they knew el duque would start the season on the DL, the team refused to sign kyle lohse for the #5 spot. the guy was on the market forever, and something like 1 yr at $6mill would have done it, for a guy who would eat innings and have a mid/high-4 ERA.

before the season, lots of people on this board said “id rather just go with the arms in the minors for the #5. who’s to say lohse is any better than them??” now we will be stuck with a full season of pelfreys, figueroas, vargas, etc, and their 4IP, 4BB, 6ER stat lines. pelfrey needs a full year in the minors – shame on the scouting/front office for continually failing to realize this

    • backinbusiness says:

see above — at least Niese is promising:

      AA: Niese: (1-0, 2GS), 11 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 0.82 ERA

      and Bostick looks OK too:

      AAA: Bostick, (1-0, 2 GS), 12 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 12 K, 2.25 ERA

      • dave27 says:

Adam Bostick. LOL. Unfortunately Vargas is hurt and unable to be pitching worse, as he would be.

        Not Omar’s finest moment.

        • dave27 says:

OK ignore me – I totally misread that line.

I still think Bostick stinks, but he’s apparently pitched well so far.

Egg on face, foot in mouth.

        • Mingo says:

Eggs and foot? You mean eggs and shoes I’ll bet. You must be a closet Braves fan.

        • Nate W. says:

Bostick got his walks way down in the fall league, and it seems to have carried over to this year. Its a nice sign from a guy who historically doesnt allow many hits and strikes out a fair share. He’s progressing, one can hope…

  24. Wheelhouse22 says:

The main issue I see with alot of the fan response is that they are all yelling for Willie to CHAAANGE things. Willie needs to light a fire, Willie needs to step up and yell, Willie needs to mix things up, Willie needs to show more intensity.

NEWSFLASH: Its not going to happen! This is who Willie Randolph is. A poor mans version of Torre who sits there like a corpse while his team tanks. The attitudes and mentality of this team will NOT change until that man leaves the building.

Should the players play hard despite Randolph? Of course…but its not goign to happen in Flushing. If Omar knows whats best, he cuts Willie before May….before the Mets are 10 games back.

  25. backinbusiness says:

OK Willie on the FAN right now.

  26. Charlie says:

Willie (Gas Bag) Randolph is on with M&MD…

“I don’t feel there is any carryover from last year,” he says. He also still has a bottle of Dom in his fridge.

  27. DaWrightStuff says:

Oy! It’s not like we didn’t see this coming.
I don’t know where or have enough time to get the “GO BIG PELF” tshirt, but I will print one out stick it on myself when I watch the game tonight.

    GO
    BIG
    PELF

  28. Charlie says:

Willie says he pulled Ollie because “he was dodging bullets all day.”

It’s funny. Willie says he pulled Ollie because he felt he would regret it if the next pitch resulted in runs. But, then, one must ask, why didn’t he fear regret when he was watching Show?

  29. Minayas_Mets says:

Im all for Wally Backman – Former Met and exactly the kind of fiery guy this team needs

Willie is Art Howe but worse cause hes a lifetime yankee

turn it around willie or take a hike and stop saying ” i have faith in my guys” and ” we get them tommorow”

this type of cavalier atitude is exaclty whats wrong with this team

    • metz1 says:

i agree 100 percent i think the players need a mgr that will light a fire under their butts!

  30. Charlie says:

Angel Pagan hitting in the two hole tonight.

    • dave27 says:

Good, shake things up a little bit. Maybe HE can get on base for Wright and Beltran.

      • cb32 says:

Good!! Pagan hustles his butt off as if he is still trying to make this team. It is honestly refreshing.

  31. zen says:

    reyes
    pagan
    wright
    beltran
    delgado
    easley
    church
    schneider
    pelfrey

  32. backinbusiness says:

did i just hear willie say jose was “bored” in spring training? someone please tell me i misheard.

  33. Constnza81V2.0 says:

Seriously.. You got Vargas, Tejada and Weaver all still available on the open market. I’d even take Boomer Wells for a few starts. If Pelfrey or Figuerora **it the bed this week, you HAVE to sign one of these guys. Heck, even if they both pitch CG shutouts, I would sign one of these guys.

  34. zen says:

willie: we don’t like the phillies at all

  35. Charlie says:

willie says they “are not dealing with” the collapse hangover possibility. that is precisely why they are suffering from it.

  36. Charlie says:

willie: we don’t like [the phillies] at all.

wow. no back it up, man!

  37. Charlie says:

Wilie: [Pelfrey] is going to be a big part of the rotation.

Well, there it is. No short leash here.

  38. wrighton05 says:

Trade proposal: Ambiorix Burgos for Brian Bannister

  39. cropseymonster says:

This season is gonna be a barrel of sardonic laughs (because I’m done crying over this team)

  40. Vargas will be signed by tomorrow…but we need Pelf to still step up tonight, if not …..we only have 3 good arms..and thats not gonna get us anywhere ,,especially when out big boppers are not producing anything but singles.

    • k-mets says:

Buster Olney believes that Mets will sign Vargas depending upon the performance of Pelfery.

      Go Big Pelf

  41. metz1 says:

I wouldnt panic yet but i 2 things to think about the bullpen and the mets hitting woes.

  42. metz1 says:

I think we need one more big hitter but where and how do the mets go about this?Get rid of the few prospects left?

  43. ccmetfan says:

unless u wanna buy a mets Bonds jersey

  44. Ryan Synagogue says:

Just sign Claudio Vargas. His ERA will drop in our park and with our defense behind him.

A team like this has needed a sinker-baller for a long time, such a good infield being completely wasted. Instead of trying to convert Pelfrey to a sinker pitcher, we need to just sign one to handle the back of our rotation

  45. metz1 says:

I also wonder how the mets would perform under a different mgr!

  46. metz1 says:

If there was one hitter available that you think could make a difference who would that be?

  47. metzelaar says:

Why did we sign Alou over Carlos Lee again?

  48. metz1 says:

    good question

  49. metz1 says:

i know omar thinks alou can still hit but the guy is way too old !ther must be an outfielder we could aquire that can hit!

  50. HeadlinerG60 says:

Sign Bonds for the year. He’ll be handy in a platoon with Moist Hands, during Inter-League and, God willing, the World Series – not to mention off the bench. Besides, whether it’s good or bad, he’ll bring a swagger and attitude to an otherwise flat team.

  51. metz1 says:

I wonder what the blue jays want for outfielder adam lind? young guy who scouts feel will hit 25-30 hrs a year.

  52. metz1 says:

When you think about it we really only have 1 good starting outfielder. And hes in centerfield.

  53. vitto79 says:

    Sign Vargas ASAP

Duque is pretty much done…….he breaks down all the time so whatever they get from him is a bonus

Pedro will return too but who knows as it’s likely the 6 weeks

So hope Santana, Maine , Perez hold the fort……..Vargas and Pelfrey…………

Still think they will be fine but crap

  54. metz1 says:

And not only that but i hope luis castillo isnt out for long!

  55. RPIazza31 says:

I just got through lesson 3 of my Dale Carnegie Course.

Lesson: Enthusiasm. No wait I meant Enthusiasm!!

    Now wait, better put….

    ENTHUSIASMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omar, save the season now and find Willie Randolph a Dale Carnegie course going on this week while they are still teaching about

    ENTHUSIASMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. dave27 says:

    The immortal Bean Stringfellow.

I hope MLB follows up with a “one Vargas” rule because I never want to see Jason on the mound for the Mets again.
