eMailbag: from a Phillies fan
By Matthew Cerrone - Apr 10, 2008 9:37 am

The following e-mail was sent to me late last night, clearly from a Phillies fan, which reads:

“So, the only way you can beat us is if Jimmy Rollins is out of the lineup and we make four errors.”

…what hurts here, is that i have no response…until the Mets win a few from the Phillies, i need to keep my trap shut…and i hate that…one at a time, though, buddy…and, yes, i’ll take them any way i can

Yeah, who cares how you get them, it goes down as a division W. And if it puts us in the postseason over them, then so be it.

Alot of Braves fans here at Virginia Tech, one said the other day “So are the Mets ever going to beat my Braves?”. Only playing 2 games, I didn’t have much to say, but he was a little slow as he thought they were still 3-3 (when they were 3-5), so I replied with: We don’t have to, you lose to everyone else.

Looking forward to Maine tonight, Eaton always pitches well against us.

Your at VT? I graduated from Radford. Hating VT of course :)

      • esilac says:

Yeah, I’m from LI, NY but came to VT. Graduating this May and will be heading up to NY to do some full-time work with my Computer Engineering degree. And to get back to Mets games of course.

        • therealsince86 says:

Unfortunately I grew up in that area and moved even further south to NC. Everyone here is either a Braves fan or a wanna be Yankee fan it seems. Before extrainnings and MLB.tv the only games I ever to watch were against the Braves and for most of my life they were dominated by them. It’s been nice the past 2 years to have something to say back.

    • choochoo808 says:

You can amke the same argument about the Phillies - they can only beat the Mets when their starting left fielder and #2 starter are on the shelf. To hear trash talk coming from fans of that team is just perplexing. They leap frog a collapsing Mets team by one game, get swept in the first round - and suddenly they’re the Yankees?

    • novanoto says:

next time anyone runs into a phillies fan gloating about last year, just point this out to them…they lost two more games than we did last year…they’ll get confused and wonder what the heck you’re talking about, and just repeat it to them.

…and then reinforce that philadelphia is nothing more than a glorified piss stop between NYC and DC, and this is coming from someone who went to undergrad in philthydelphia

  2. therealsince86 says:

That’s like the ones on here who say the only way the Phillies won the division is because of the Mets collapse. It’s like they are independent of each other. The Phillies had to play well down the stretch and the Mets had to fall apart down the stretch to make it happen.
Last night, the Phillies had to make errors and the Mets had to take advantage of them. They are related to each other.
As for the injury of Rollins, I am sure they would have much rather have had us have Alou in LF and a healthy Pedro on the mound with Sanchez coming in. You can never blame injuries because that is baseball.

  3. CharlieH says:

The answer to that, Matthew, is :

    “And your point is…?”

This ain’t college: a win is a win is a win. We’re not givin’ it back.

    • sincekindergarten says:

Exactly. A win is a win is a win. There’s no column in the standings for “The team you beat wasn’t full strength.”

      • CharlieH says:

        Style points not neccessary.

        There’s no RPI in baseball.

        Ummm….ummmm…

The Phillies put their pants on 1 leg at a time, too.

        Ummm…ummmmm…

      • ibleedorangeandblue says:

EXACTLY!! just like Vin Diesel says in “The Fast and the Furious”, “it’s not a matter of you winning by an inch or a mile. A win is a win” No matter how you slice it teams are bound to have bad games, and it’s not as if the winning team comes off the field bummed out say, “man, if they didn’t boot 4 balls we never would of won.”?? they put the bats to the balls last night and looked decent doing it. However, that many men left on base in an errorless game would not be acceptable

    • metzelaar says:

      Gertrude Stein?

  4. Xavier22 says:

A similar argument can be made for Philly wins. As Willie pointed out, most of the games the Phillies won the second half of last year were due more to errors by the Mets rather than superior baseball by the Phillies.

    • dykstraw says:

I distinctly recall that one of those wins was due to umpire error anyway.

And clearly the Phils won on Tuesday because of the Mets’ mistakes. Someone over there (Rollins? Shrek the manager?) admitted as much.

Sometimes it only takes one flukey game to turn the tide.

  5. mrose says:

i can remember a phillies/mets game in like september and the mets made like 3-4 errors and basically gave the game too…

so….his point being? this goes two ways

  6. Prismo says:

Oh Matt…why did you post his email, therefore justifying it?

I mean, seriously…there has to be at least one other out-of-this-world way that we can beat the Phillies.

  7. MrHat says:

Look no further than game 1….the Phils dont win that without a Delgado error…..

  8. dave27 says:

I’d say the same about the Phillies win Monday.

Anyway remind this clown that he roots for the worst franchise in baseball history - one that took 100 years to win their one World Series (which of course ranks them behind the Mets who are about 80 years their junior), one that has not won a post-season game in 15 years, one that has lost more games than any other franchise, and one whose fan base has become so accustomed to losing repeatedly that they have lost all persepctive and context around a ultimately meaningless 89-win division title.

    • nrmax88 says:

dave, outstanding post. I was getting at the same thing underneath, but you managed you articulate it much better then I, and it looks prettier when you read it in your words. But we both were getting at the same thing. The Phillie fans seem to think that other people are somehow impressed by their team or something. Because they won one division title they didnt deserve and proceeded to get plastered by the Rockies in 3 games.

      • dave27 says:

The Mets have made the postseason 7 times and faild to advance at least one round only once (1988). I guess I just can’t relate to what it must be like.

Since the Mets have been in existence the fightin’ Phils have failed to advance in 4 of their 7 postseason appearances - 76, 77, 78, and 07. Kind of their MO.

    • zen says:

exactly. it would be one thing if it was the braves fans talking, but the phillies fans…please. you had two good months against the mets after 2 and half years of getting smacked around by them

  9. nrmax88 says:

Dont forget, we also need the starter to walk 6 out of the first 12 batters. Or else we cant win.

The funny and momentarily annoying thing is that, these stupid phillie fans think they have some street credit for winning the division or something. It doesnt annoy me anymore, just amuses me when I mull it over. The phillies are the worst team ever. In any sport. In the history of the universe. Well, atleast on this planet. The BRaves win tons of disivion titles in a row, the Phillies folding and choking for the back end of some of those ATL titles. Now they win one division title, on the last day of the year, and proceed to get man-handled by a crappy colorado team that had no business being in the playoffs in the first place, cant even scrape a win out, and their fans think they are some big tough philly team that nobody wants to play. Just amusing. I dont think anybody is the least bit scared of Philly. I just dont.

  10. murphdo817 says:

Put it this way. The Phillies only won the division because the Mets had 7 runs put on them in the first inning of the last game. They took the field with no pressure on them for their final game.

When Maine almost tossed a no hitter the day before all they needed to do was win and be guaranteed at least a tie and they blew the game against the Nationals.

Then they get swept in the playoffs.

Their entire run for the division was improbable … they really had no pressure to win because they weren’t expected to win because no one expected the Mets to blow such a lead.

They have started the season horribly again.

No one talks about this but I think the point is valid. I think the Phillies play well when nothing much is expected or they have nothing to lose. Put them in a position where they are expected to win and they choke.

Last nights win was HUGE. I feel like I can breathe again.

  11. VCarver says:

Ahhh, I like it. Sour grapes from a Phillies fan.

Did he forget that in the first half of last year it was the Mets who beat up on the Phillies? Even when Rollins was in the lineup? I guess it’s convenient for Phillies fans to have amnesia, given their horrendous performance in last year’s playoffs.

  12. jamie says:

oh, sillies, will you ever learn?

  13. mikey_FF says:

Guys, guys, guys … lets win the series tonight. Then we’ll talk smack.

  14. bvaz says:

give the Phils credit for last year. yes, the Mets collapsed, but the Phils capitalized on it.
but it’s funny how all of a sudden, Phisl fans feel like they have this storied history. it’s like a mets fan saying, how come you guys can’t win a playoff series like we did in 2006?
the past is the past. Rollins is a hell of a player but let’s also face reality, last year was by far his best statistical year. if he backs it up again this year, good for him. but if we took delgado’s best year and Beltran’s best year and so on, we would have a better team than Philly.
it’s a new year and thus far, neither team is stellar as of yet. let’’s get some more games under our belts and then we can talk.

  15. mhochman says:

Did the Mets beat the phillies just because Jimmy Rollins wasn’t there?

    >magic 8ball shake, shake shake shake<

    “ALL SIGNS POINT TO NO”

There you have it folks. case closed…

  16. kapnasty says:

The Phillies wouldn’t have won most of their games against the Mets if it wasn’t for some uncharacteristic Mets play. Utley made the first error and set the tone for the rest of the team so hopefully this means the worm has turned. A Rollins injury and multiple errors; hopefully tonight the Mets will continue to get the bounces.

  17. ravi3 says:

Thats kind of why I wasn’t as satisfied with last nights win…it was good to get the W no doubt, but it seemed kind of empty considering the game was all but handed to us.

Plus, its like beating the Braves without Chipper playing…its just not as fun

  18. SK says:

Somewhere, a bad sports journalist is writing an article pointing out how last night’s game proves how valuable Jimmy Rollins is to the Phillies, and how much he deserved MVP last year, over a handful of statistically superior players because, you know, “his team won the division.”

  19. C-Ballz says:

Gotta hand it to the Phillies, they can really dish out some beatdowns. Of course they all learned from their leader, Brett Myers, who practiced on his wife.

Last night was a gift, but I dont wanna hear it from Phils fans, the Mets gave them about 5 gifts last year. Opening day was a gift, they didnt complain about that.

  20. haplo says:

So the Phillies loss (and Mets’ win) counts less because of who they have injured? Man, where can the Mets sign up for that type of deal? Given all our injuries, we’d be in first place with like 0.7 losses.

And I really, really, really hope that the Phillies’ players are as overconfident as their fans.
