i want rollins in there. it wont be over until we beat the full strength phillies. last nights win wasnt the end. the phillies were missing their best player and beat themselves with an insane amount of walks and errors. yesterday doesnt make me feel any better about the mets v. phils

    • BIG17EASY says:

Agreed. Wanting Rollins to sit out tonight is the same as admitting the Mets can’t beat the Phillies when he plays.

    • Benny Blanco from da Bronx says:

Uhh, no… I’ll take any win, any way.

Did you care in 2006 when Chipper was on and off the field fo rthe Braves?

You think the phillies cared the mets missed Alou, Pedro, and Dirty Sanchez?

    • Ceetar says:

Nope. A win is a win, and that’s all the matters. This isn’t a fantasy match up where you want to pit players against players in a battle, it’s simply playing better with what you have. Screw Rollins.

although, I’d rather Rollins play, twist his ankle further bending out of the way of an inside pitch from Maine and be out until July.

  2. Mr.Spock says:

Thank you Anthony.velli!!!! Finally a realistic met fan… I have been arguing this point all day.

    • metsftw says:

the phillies beat us when we were injured and made a ton of errors. how is our win different again?

      • ill says:

I have to ask, when are you even not injured? This team has had a “major contributer” on the DL everyday for the last 2 seasons.

        • metzelaar says:

          What’s your point, exactly?

Between Pedro, Duaner, and Alou, yeah, we’ve had major contributors (no use for quotations, it’s a fact) on the DL consistently these past two seasons. But the Mets, and a majority of their fans, aren’t using that as an excuse, unlike the whining that was going on in Phillie when Utley broke his hand.

        • ill says:

I don’t know of any whining, the team went 15-13 while Utley was on the DL, and went on a 20-10 run once he came back. Him not being in the lineup hurt us, but the team functioned, but we didn’t play the Mets while he was out.

        • metzelaar says:

Again, what is your point? We’ve been losing key players to injury. Is there something you’re trying to get at, or are you just stating the obvious?

        • ill says:

just countering your response by setting it straight, what are you getting worked up about.

My main point was that it will never be a “sweeter victory” for either team if you look at it like that. Even if you guys are trying to fulfill what you fell short of doing last year, winning 1 series this season will not change anything. It will all come down to the final division results.

        • metzelaar says:

Not getting worked up. Just wondering if you’re talking for the sake of hearing your voice, or you actually have a point.

And nobody is “looking at it like that.” Except you, maybe, who cited Rollins absence in the game yesterday.

        • ill says:

anthony.velli mentions it in the first post, it wasn’t even brought up by me. I am pretty sure he is a Mets fan.

        • metzelaar says:

Actually he’s saying he wants Rollins in there so you can’t rely on the same sorry excuse you’ve been harping on so far.

        • ill says:

actually, that is exactly what he is saying.

        • metzelaar says:

Okay. He’s not using Rollins as an excuse for your team’s loss. He just doesn’t want you here whining about how he’s not in the game, like you’ve been doing so far.

  3. ill says:

So are you willing to wait for the Hamels-Santana matchup with full strength squads?

    • mrose says:

would i truly be full strength though?
I mean, hopefully Duaner is back…but Alou is still out

      • ill says:

I dunno, that depends on your training staff. If you want to look at it that way, when was the last time the Mets were at “full strength”.

I am not sure us Phillies fans will be able to wait until 2010 for it to be a fair game.

        • novanoto says:

hey “ill”, take the two more losses the phillies had than the mets from last year, and go back to philly. please. we dont need you here, no matter how you try and be a good “fan.”
          ps-jims beats pats and genos

        • ill says:

there are better places than Jim’s even, but thanks for letting me know that the tourist traps are junk. no one is bringing up last season so why are you guys stuck on it. New season, new goals.

we are lacking Mets fans at my forum (sports-boards.net), so I come here for a good argument.

    • kandiman says:

Hamels Blows, tell him to go whine about his contract some more

  4. helicopter ben johnson says:

I beg to differ – whatever helps us get win # 4….

    • sincekindergarten says:

I agree. The Phillthies weren’t exactly upset that they didn’t have the opportunity to beat Pedro from April to the end of August last year, were they? And that they didn’t have the opportunity to face Moises Alou last year for large chunks of the season?

As I said in another thread–A win is a win is a win. Let’s get all we can.

  5. dap260 says:

I say Jimmy should strap them up and take his beating with his teammates. These Mets have more talent than the Phils, and it’s about time we started acting like it.

  6. anthony.velli says:

i understand that you can’t use injuries as a disclaimer, and i normally wouldn’t, but this is a special case. last night’s victory was unfulfilling because rollins, the league mvp, wasn’t there and, partly because of his absence, the phils made four errors. combine this with the walks and the fact that the phillies out hit the mets and i’m unable to count last night as a full victory. rollins will be there throughout the season and those errors and walks probably will not. i wouldn’t be surprised if rollins played more games the rest of the year than alou, pedro, el duque, and dauner combined. rollins return is a given, the return of the injured mets are not.

    • ill says:

well put Ant. Rollins is the heart and soul of the Phillies and errors made at his position were main contributors as to why the Phillies lost last night. If Jimmy was in last night, that’s is a different game.

      • ill says:

sorry, I will proof next time.

        • metzelaar says:

Man up and stop making excuses. Hypocrite.

        • ill says:

last night’s game was just ugly for the phils, even you have to admit that. Kendrick was getting hit and did not have control, but I am just saying that Rollins makes those plays without a problem. It would have been a different game.

I never accused any of you of making excuses.

        • metzelaar says:

Actually, you did. Twice in this thread. Remember: “Phils fans can’t wait til 2010 for a fair game”? That presupposes that we think every game we’ve played so far is an unfair game due to our injuries.

Passively aggressively trying to get under people’s skin is weak, man. Either go for it all out or don’t bother.

        • ill says:

ythe 2010 crack was just saying that you guys always have a deep DL, not sure how you can argue against that. I am just saying that if we are going to wait for our DL’s to be completely empty, we might have a longer wait for yours to be clear. But that is the nature of baseball.

        • metzelaar says:

That’s not what you were saying, and you know it as well as I do. This is becoming sad.

      • Another Matt says:

Let’s just conveniently ignore the fact that Rollins is not a great defensive SS – his RZR last year was 40 points lower than Bruntlett’s at the position.

Maybe if Rollins played last night he’d have made even more errors contributing to an even bigger blowout.

        • ill says:

can’t be sure it wouldn’t have happened that way.

and if that makes you sleep better at night knowing the Mets beat the Phillies last night, good for you.

  7. jamie says:

nuts to that…I hope he plays every game, so when we beat them we can finally stop this ridiculous story line.

  8. DerekBellsMustache says:

maybe if he plays the injury will get worse and he will be out even longer

    • ill says:

      classy.

      • metzelaar says:

        Classier: trolling other teams’ blogs.

        • ill says:

I would put money on the fact that there are more mets fans posting over at beerleaguer.

if you wanna talk on neutral ground, come to Sports-boards.net. We have 1 Mets fan I pulled from over here, he likes it, but he needs backup big time.

        • metzelaar says:

So your justification is two wrongs make a right? Well there goes your credibility. Say bye.

  9. VCarver says:

Well, the win last night was totally 100% satisfying to me. Injuries are part of the game and are a poor excuse for any team to use for losing.

If Beltran or Wright (who are better players than Rollins) were out tonight, I would not use it as an excuse if the Mets lost.

Last year in the first half, the Mets beat up on the Phillies while Rolins was healthy, so it’s clear he’s not a vital missing ingredient.

    • ill says:

I’m not making excuses, and not saying the Phillies were sure to win that game with Rollins in there, but you can’t say it wouldn’t have been the same game (at least the errors would have been cut down). You can throw out RZR and other stats like that, but just watching you can see Brunett was not Rollins.

and the Phillies were 5-6 against the Mets in the first half of the season last year. Not really “dominating”

      • metzelaar says:

Yeah, it would have been a different game if we had Alou too. And it would have been a different game if we signed Carlos Lee all those years ago. And it would have been a different game if Pelfrey had thrown a few different pitches, or the Phils didn’t swing at a few pitches.

What’s done is done. Get over it. We won.

      • VCarver says:

It’s never the same game when a player is out. And that goes for the Mets too, who are missing Alou and Sanchez now. A good team will have an adequate backup for almost every position sitting on the bench. Apparently the Phillies don’t have one for SS and that’s your team’s problem and reflects poor planning by Gillick and your manager. Backups are part of the game too and good teams plan for them.

The point is you can never use injuries as an excuse as all teams suffer them. The good teams plan for them and can compensate.

It doesn’t matter if the Mets didn’t dominate the Phillies in the first half last year. They had an edge on them, even when Rollins was in the lineup. And they were 11-8 against the Phillies in 2006 when Rollins was also healthy. So he clearly is not some sort of super weapon for your team. Burrell has been more harmful against the Mets than Rollins.
